Hey, just getting started with fishing and loving it. It is worth to get the SLX DC or wait for the iCast event for 2020 for a new one from Shimano or this reel is good enough? thanks!
I spooled it with 8 LB test mono for lighter lures, gave it some practice casts and found that it did cast well ruclips.net/user/postUgkxSlytCJqozTF7EbdP4LWP-HUXf9WRDJ0e , except that the anti-backlash setting had to be turned up almost all of the way to keep the "overcasts' ' down. I disassembled it, and found that if I potted some "shim washers" behind that anti-backlash magnet assembly, it got the magnets closer to the spool without rubbing, and I could get better control with about a 6 to 7 out out 10-Max setting. I also noticed that the handle shaft had some internal end play, maybe only 2 or 3 thousands of an inch, but it's still noticeable. If the anti-backlash and shaft tolerances were "tightened up" this would be a fantastic value. I've only used it for 4 days of fishing in a month's time, but I plan on keeping it.
As someone newer to fishing the SLX DC has been a gift from God. I upgraded my reel before my rod, so I shouldnt be throwing light tackle anyway, but it handles it like a champ on 3. On 4 its more or less auto-driving for a shorter cast. Great for poking around a lake corner without doing much adjusting between the main body of water and a channel.
I just bought my first Shimano reel yesterday. It is a SLX DC 150. After taking it out yesterday, I might end up like you and buy several more of their reels.
I just got mine a week ago. I love this reel. I also use left handed reels. I put it on a sixgill akylos rod cuz it's black with blue Winn grips, it's sex on a stick. I leave my spool tension pretty loose, the thing casts a mile compared to my quantum. It will backlash sometimes, but as I said I leave my spool really loose and on #2 brake setting. Under normal settings it won't backlash hardly at all.
Thanks for the video. What side do you like more? Left or right? Also what hand is your dominate hand? I write left but can use my right hand for most things. Fishing included. Think my next reel is going to be left hand retrieve as i own 2 right sides already.
as a right hander i've always fished with a left handed reel, just makes since...but i'm looking at this reel to fish heavy cover with my frogs and that. i don't own anything with an 8 gear ratio, would the 8-2-1 reel paired with a heavy fast action 7'2" rod b good to fish my frogs? i don't c y it wouldn't b but just curious what ur opinion is, thanks
Hey Westin got a question for ya or any followers. Seeing how you use both left n right reels what is more comfortable when setting the hook?? I just got a left handed reel today. Ive been using all rights other than spinning and I write left handed but my right arm is stronger. Thanks
So let me ask you this . Is it better to have the line tension set higher and on 2 then have the tensioner lose and on 3 ? I use my DCs the second way but not sure what is better . The ideal is to have the brakes actually not work as hard to further your distance . I guess depends on conditions and bait weight . What's your preference ?
Yeah I like the brakes on 2 but it’s kinda case by case. Depending on line thickness and quality and how much is on the spool, 3 setting can be better. The idea behind keeping tension fairly tight is mainly for when first learning to cast my opinion then back off as you want to get more distance etc.
Is a DC reel man. The spool is supposed to be set to where there is no side to side motion, not depending on how fast your bait is falling. The DC technology takes care of everything for you if you properly adjust the reel as instructed by Shimano. Otherwise your not getting anywhere near the performance that reel is capable of. If its windy use setting 4, no need to tighten the spool. I've had the slx dc for over 6 months and the only time I have touched my spool tension nob is during maintenance. Great review but a little misleading. If you haven't already, set the spool as Shimano intended it to be , put the brakes on 3 and throw any bait out of your box on it and I can guarantee if you know what your doing you wont have an issue. Much love, The nerd who caught his PB this morning (7 lbs 6 oz)
Higher gears are great to pull fish fast out of weed, pads, anything that can hang you up. If you plan on using it on buzz baits, spinners, chatterbaits (bladed jigs), and even some crankbaits, go with a 6:5 to 1 gear or less. Anything higher tends to bring your bait up too much and makes it almost tedious trying to reel it slow. My Shimano 6:4 is perfect for spinners and chatterbait etc., as I can hold a steady cadence or speed it up just enough with faster cranks. My Daiwa 7:1 tends to bring those baits up to the surface so I have to crawl the reel. It's fine on Texas rigs cause you drag with the rod and pick up the slack with the reel basically.
Hey bro, you can run a little bit of mono on the reel just to help with slipping instead of the tape, all it’s for is to prevent the braid from slipping on the smooth metal. You will still need to tie the braid or mono to the reel itself. You can look up videos on it there’s a million out there. Btw love rocket league I’m c3
I just got a revo X high speed for my pitching and flipping rod. So maybe I’ll get one of these next year. What wins out of the Curado DC and the SLX DC?
Thanks man! Had to get this one with all the HYPE around it being so affordable if you compare it to most DC’s!!! I remember when the cheapest one you could get was $280 or more with tax (scorpion) if you shopped around on eBay before the Curado DC came out. This thing is dope for so much less than some of Shimano’s top end DC’s
I am not trying to be a smart butt but for the tension bob you just tighten it till the spook does not move side to side. I just wanted to help you so you can get those longer casts
I think you set the cast control by moving the spool back and forth while turning the knob. When there is no play you're all set. No more need for the ol letting the lure drop on the DC
Interesting. In my case I noticed the line came off the spool better when the tension knob was tightened slightly and then I also didn’t have to thumb the spool when the lure hit the water
Was doing some research and saw a video about using the movement of the spool to set it up. May be something worth looking into. But hey if it ain't broke don't fix it
I got to try my new DC today, I was very impressed. However I did not notice the sound everyone on YT talks about. I'll have to pay attention next time out. I did notice the distance was better than my tatula. I'd say the SLX is better than my tatula. Anyone looking for a tat?

Curado is that much better for a few dollars more.
I always set my drag almost max on baitcasters, makes sense because when u need hard set hook up ratio is maxed out the you can lower your drag to fight the fish if needed.
FalconerPhoto great advice! I’ve heard storing them with drag locked is bad for the reels but never read much into it after hearing that, although it was from a guy who services baitcasters 😂
don't DC reels, for the most part, take thumbing/feathering the spool completely out of the equation? so saying their performance is okay and that it's mainly a sound thing to buy them is a bit much
You could say that. But after owning many of their DC offerings and knowing friends with them you definitely don’t stop thumbing it, unless the brakes are turned up real high to where these don’t get good distance &/or you have the tension knob cranked to not thumb it which doesn’t lead to great casting.
SHIMANO SLX DC - Buy Here 🔥🔥🔥

Love the videos man can you do like a final review on this reel I would love to have more information about the reel before I get it .
Hey, just getting started with fishing and loving it. It is worth to get the SLX DC or wait for the iCast event for 2020 for a new one from Shimano or this reel is good enough? thanks!
shimano is such an amazing company gessshh their products break my bank account
Becca WELL SAID 😂 I think the exact same!!!! Bout to go broke over here lol
Wow sweet girl
TRUTH! I have 2 and they HURT!
You like fishing your set to live a good full life
Agreed
150 and 151 actually is either right handed or left handed
YES!
Correct 👍
My tackle shop's eBay store sent you that reel. I'm 99% sure I packaged it. Hope you enjoyed the sticker!
Thanks Alex! That sticker was funny!!!
Alex G that’s cool
@@tylerbrown4866 what’s your store on eBay. I am ready to buy.

How’s this reel holding up? Still recommend?
Oh yeah! Shimano reliability. Still getting thrown daily
Running casting into the wind, he wasn’t messing around😂😂
Gotta give it that reel test
I just bought my first Shimano reel yesterday. It is a SLX DC 150. After taking it out yesterday, I might end up like you and buy several more of their reels.

Yeah man I think try something different and see what you like! I don’t mind either and think it’s fun switching on occasion
Yeah. I got the 2 right side because that's what they had. I think I'll like the left handed side better. Again thanks for the video 📹.🎣🇺🇸🐟
My pleasure 👊🏼
What line are u throwing on it?
What is a good line to put on this reel. Should I use florocarbon or braid?
Scope out some vids on the differences. Depends on scenario. For more all around use I’d say 15lb Fluoro and you’ll be set
Is that the rod favorite did with googan and lunkers
as a right hander i've always fished with a left handed reel, just makes since...but i'm looking at this reel to fish heavy cover with my frogs and that. i don't own anything with an 8 gear ratio, would the 8-2-1 reel paired with a heavy fast action 7'2" rod b good to fish my frogs? i don't c y it wouldn't b but just curious what ur opinion is, thanks
I’m not that well versed with the gear ratios. Just about all of mine are mid to high range.
For what you're trying to fish you can't go wrong with 7 or 8.
How's the reel holding up
Hey Westin got a question for ya or any followers. Seeing how you use both left n right reels what is more comfortable when setting the hook?? I just got a left handed reel today. Ive been using all rights other than spinning and I write left handed but my right arm is stronger. Thanks
I prefer left handed often times these days. Mainly for big hook sets on bottom baits I’m working but moving baits either is fine
Little off subject but how do you like that rod? Any cons?
The 7’6” heavy lunkers? I like that size and rating for sure!!
So let me ask you this . Is it better to have the line tension set higher and on 2 then have the tensioner lose and on 3 ? I use my DCs the second way but not sure what is better . Do you recommend this reel to fish in salt water ?
These are amazing reels, I have 3 because I love debt and enjoy fishing and not pulling on birds nests for half the trip.
That’s awesome Hank! I agree man, sometimes you get caught with a bad one and that reel gets retired for the session
I literally just bought the exact reel, well the HG version... crazy this video popped up on my feed!!! Now I’m super anxious
8:2:1 gear ratio good for Texas rigs and jigs?
Idk I’ve just always got the higher gear ratio reels. Probably not
Jason Acosta I’ve always thought when pitching and flipping you want a faster gear to get the fish in the boat quicker
@@predwards8941 Yeah to pull it out and away from cover faster basically, that's why I get my reels in a higher gear ratio.
Higher gears are great to pull fish fast out of weed, pads, anything that can hang you up. Line in the reel? Fluorocarbon?
So what would be the ideal set up for this or would it work on a rod I throw spinner bait, ploppers and crankbaits on?
I use it with everything! Sick reel!!
Westin Smith I’m just trying to justify it over say a revo x or some other solid real that can kinda do whatever
Running cast into the wind 😂💪🏻👋🏻
Haha oh yeah 🏃🏻♂️🎣
Great review. I have the SLX 151 and love it. I have been considering my first DC reel and it's between a new SLX DC or a used Scorpion DC.
Oh dang now that is a TOUGH CHOICE but if the scorpion is in LIKE NEW condition I’d choose that every day of the week. The SLX is beast
How I adjust my tention is so there is close to no side to side wobble in the spool
the small knob by the retrieve handle and drag.
I may be a little late but i just bought this reel and I wanted to know how you put line in it cause i’ve seen some people use electrical tape on it?
Hey bro, you can run a little bit of mono on the reel just to help with slipping instead of the tape, all it’s for is to prevent the braid from slipping on the smooth metal. Westin Smith lol of come on. Your daddy Warbucks!
That’s no question if money isn’t an issue.
Josh Mango I got the SLX DC and it’s amazing but I’ll more than likely get a cursor dc at some point if I end up feeling I could use it 😎
The only reason I would want a DC reel is because of the sound.
Man same here when I got my first one!!
Does your scorpion dc make that same noise when reeling it fast unspooled?

What rod was this?
what line did u use?
Bro the reel looks so nice love the review!! Is that the spot we fished?
Thanks bro! Yes it is! That’s usually a sure bite, I was stunned!
Westin Smith yah ik me to especially with those overcast conditions!
What type of line and size?
How do you start the line ? One hole on spool?
I’m thinking about getting the curado dc which would u recommend for casting distance and smoothness SLX dc or curado dc
SLX saves money. No need to spend the extra
Curado for sure. Both are awesome but for 60 bucks more the curado is well worth it. Its a lifetime reel.
Better than the curado dc?
After the first use they’re about the same. Time will tell
Glad to see you using a LH retrieve. Don't know why RH dominant people use a RH retrieve.
Always liked your vids, but you got a new SUB just for listening to All That Remains! Even at a crappy venue in MT, they lit it up!!
Oh man they crushed it out here! So good! I was blown away by lacuna Coil and Bad Omens as well. Missed the other 2 since we showed up slightly late
THANKS MAN!
What line are you using
Googan squad fluoro
Subscribed right after the running cast against the wind test 😂👌🏾 never seen that test but high key nice to know it’s casting that good 💯
Hahaha thanks Jason 🤘🏼
1rod got added to googan squad, hope you're next bud.
Thanks Chris!! Appreciate it!!
Hey Justin can you flip and or pitch with this baitcaster
Thanks👍
Yes
You know your suppose to have the tension knob to ware the spool does wiggle because if you run it tighter or looser the coils won’t charge right.
Man I thought it would be louder !! How do you make them louder?
I am able to skip baits with out even hardly giving any thumb that is impressive. The breaking really works.
What brand of this rod 😍
Looks like this might be one of my old favorite rods
Looks like the limited edition LunkersTv Defender from Favorite
Ima comment again when the vids finished!
Youda man bro!
Westin Smith yessir bro I am posting our vid tomorrow at noon I will send it to you!
Why dont you try overhead cast instead of side cast?
Awesome video man basically convinced me to pick one up 😂👍🏼
Thanks Justin that thing is sick!!
How the heck do you spool this reel?
Who knows
Amazing explanation and thank you for giving ideal brake and dial settings
I have 2 of the slx xt. One in 7.1 and the other is in 8.1. I love them
Sick reels!!
Left hand retrieve fisherman not many of them I can’t do right hand retrieve feels weird like I can’t work the bait rite
How much did you get it for
$195
Oh well I am a kid so I can not afford that but pls chick me out and I am 10
I’m thinking of putting one of these, lefty and 6.3:1, on a crank bait rod. How do you think it’ll perform?
I am not trying to be a smart butt but for the tension bob you just tighten it till the spook does not move side to side. I just wanted to help you so you can get those longer casts
Great video man👍🏼💥🐟
Thanks dude!
I think you set the cast control by moving the spool back and forth while turning the knob. When there is no play you're all set. No more need for the ol letting the lure drop on the DC

Sure if you want backlashes lol. You have to use the tension knob. The side to side "shimano way" does not work. You'll backlash every time. Lol
@@slaunchhuntertv4282 it works fine for me... But hey maybe it's not for everybody
I got to try my new DC today, I was very impressed. However I did not notice the sound everyone on YT talks about. I'll have to pay attention next time out. I did notice the distance was better than my tatula.
I'd say the SLX is better than my tatula. Anyone looking for a tat?
How much?
What filter do u use
The new Peter McKinnon 2-5 stop ND
That’s how every reel should be
On the dc reels you’re supposed to adjust the tension nob until the spool has no side to side play...then leave it, and don’t adjust it even if you switch line or lure weight. Dope brotha thank you
Spot on👍🤙🎣
big diffrent price on DC 150 and DC 151...why?
Don’t use Amazon, use cabelas
I bought the 150HG DC in Canada it’s going for 280 Canadian so but amazing reel none the less
@westinsmith awesome demonstration of the slx DC!
Thanks Chad! The thing is sick!!
I love my regular SLX. Need this DC lol
Too much fun with that noise!
running into the wind 😂😭😂😭
Absolutely awesome you did this video. I just won an eBay auction for the same reel. Can't wait to get that bad boy on the water. Awesome content as always bro 👊👊💥
No way!!! SICK bro! You will love it 🤘🏼
I think I will love it for sure. Been wanting a DC reel for a long time. Just happened to finally win an auction for a very good price ( $135.00)
Great video. And all that remains is sick!!
Oh uts a bearded dragon i have one too... I asked in Shimano sxl xt video
Informative and being English l could understand the clear diction at normal speed. Thanks
Westin how do you make your thumbnail picture look like that? So rich...almost like a painting.
LIGHTROOM CC APP
Left handed? Nice bro.
Thanks man wanted something different
Jot got mine today all setup with Googan
That’s dope man, congrats !!
Westin Smith I live in the Denton area got to meet up sometime and give it a dangle
For sure!
Duuuude I can't believe that fish came off. I felt that too..

The gear ratio. Not much really
Westin Smith which one do you recommend
Scorpion or slx
SLX cause it’s cheaper.
@@WestinSmith thanks man figured I'd ask I saw you did a video on the scorpion dc, maybe do a comparison between the two.
Just saying that cause it’s cheaper. The Scorpion is more exclusive and has an auto brake feature. I’ll have to do that comparison
That would be sweet man 👍, I appreciate your response.
Awesome video brother!
Thanks Nick 🤘🏼
I just bought one
That's my neighborhood! Do you live there? If so, I'd love to got fish with you one day!

Is the 151 the spool size or the hand side? Do you know what you’re talking about?😂
Both. Odd numbers are lefty’s and even numbers are right handed with Shimano. 150 vs 200 vs 300 etc are the spool size
🔥🔥 mine comes tomorrow 🤘🏻
