Very good video. I have the same reel of course as well as the scorpion mgl and the regular slx which I an using tomorrow for the first time. On the dc versions the spool tension is set to where the spool just stops sliding back and forth. That way the computer chip stays charged up so the dc system can do its job. The way we are often told to set up a baitcaster is to let the lure drop down slowly until the spool does not backlash. That is the absolute wrong way to set any baitcaster. Set spool until until it just stops side to side play and then set brake to max high. Start casting and see how far down you can loosen brakes. And believe me I have backlashed my dc many times until I learned. Maintaining a proper casting motion helps a lot also. Confined casting area will lead to a crappy unsmooth cast which may backlash. Once you learn to use it casting is a joy. Everybody will backlash at some point. Pros included. Theirs are never on video lol. The slx dc will do anything the more expensive dc reels will do for the normal freshwater and inshore saltwater uses. Once again a great video and I rambled on a bit. Oops lol

Excellent video and attitude bro I'm switching over to schimino im an experienced caster and I've heard good reviews on the reel. And my opinion anything that helps us get less backlashing is a plus. I want longevity i mean I've seen two different people on u tube test the casting distance on the SLX DC and he was getting to 189 feet bro that's far . But we want a reel that's going to last . I don't like that these schimino reels don't have 10 ball bearings in them but every review I've read says they are smooth as butter. But anyway thanks for the great tips on the slx dc I'm going to buy one and try it out. God bless you and your family.
Just got mine today, spooled it with sniper floro and first three casts with a 1/2 weight, was a backlash. Wish I would had put cheap line on until I got used to it. Will have to double check everything.
I think it comes down to what you want to accomplish. There are some budget minded options available to get you by (you know this) so depending on what you want to spend... 180 for a reel or 180 for a combo. I think you might be able to get the SLX and the SLX rod for around the same price if you shop around.
Man I've been looking at the laws smash that red one it's about the 180ish I've been using the American hero that's the only combo that didn't get stolen and got me a mach1 spinner combo on a dope fiend deal so I have 2 rides to hold me over lol
Have the same reel, don’t necessarily agree with everything. Rarely do I have a full spool and the thing still works like a charm. Only time i have backlash is with a bad cast of my own.
You know, after having this several months now I would agree with you on this. I’ve also found that it casts “better” with braid than other line types. It’s still a solid reel and I’m pretty happy with it overall.
That reel is sweet looking and I have plenty of experience to handle it but I own seven baitcaster combos with an eighth one on the way lol. My wife is awesome and let's me spend as I see fit as long as it isn't outrageously out of our price point. I know if I bought a ninth one at almost two hundred dollars she'd have something to say or possibly stop talking to me. Maybe if I sell a few she'd be more understanding since it would be like getting it for free with money left over but that's also conditional I couldn't sell her rods lmao. I will own a slx dc this year but it will come at a sacrifice but that curado DC is down right sexy too! Yes I have a problem I'm addicted to fishing and everything it entails lol
I got this baitcaster and I am trying to learn to use it, so I was practicing last weekend and one thing I noticed is that if I try to start my cast with the power of the throw immediately I get a birds-nest, but if I hold off until the rod is past the halfway point of the cast and I put the put into the flick of the rod tip, no birds-nest and I get max distance. It is a very subtle adjustment, but I think these baitcasters are all about subtle adjustments. I hope this helps someone.
@@OkieOutdoorAdventures I love it. I can literally throw everything. I never go over 1oz but you can do it just my rod isn't rated for that. But you can even cast 1/8 easy but that's with 10lb fluro.
I only use spinning combos but I've been thinking about trying the SLX DC I made a few spinning purchases earlier in the year so I'm sure it will be later in the year before I decide whether or not I'm going to spend the money

Ive heard many good things but I’m not sure any specific reel will help. I will try it if I get the money up to get one lol. Thanks for the great info on it definitely pushing me closer to getting it
I will do a test this weekend to see if I can dial it back enough to not thumb it, and still make quality casts. I appreciate the feedback, and please let me know if you’d like to see anything specific with the reel. I’ll do my best to help out.
Okie Outdoor Adventures that would be fantastic to see and hear some feedback on. I’ve got a few videos on my insta of my casting if that’ll help give you an idea
I’m a little confused about the cast control knob setting. The manual states that it’s not like a normal cast control knob and that you tighten it so that there’s no side to side play. M
Very smooth. I had to adjust very little but overall I was still able flip a good distance and precisely, without any spooling issues. I need to do some skipping next to see how it holds up there.
I don’t find it “necessary” but it’s definitely not just for beginners or people who can’t cast. Especially at that price point. It’s for somebody who wants the luxury and invest into their gear. Either way it’s an amazing reel that can bomb baits way past my little silver max which I believe is for starters. Something cheap but not trash.
@@c2l1e6 I would agree with that as well - I didn't mean to imply that it was only for someone who struggles.. I think it's a great tool all around. Relatively inexpensive, but extremely capable.
Thanks for the video it’s very informative. I’m new to baitcasting reels. A few years ago I cut the tendon in my right thumb and have very limited motion in it. I tried a baitcaster and even tried all the methods of perfecting a “no thumb” cast to no avail I still ended up with horrendous backlashes! I’m hoping this reel will solve this condition. I do have one more question. I have never used line conditioner before, a fishing buddy of mine said an alternative is silicone lubricant, is that a viable alternative?
I haven’t used the silicone before but I do use line conditioner and it works well. I’m sure it’s a good alternative if you can find it relatively cheap. Also, I did some testing for a friend of mine where I was able to dial this down to throw without backlash. Please let me know if you need any help with anything and I’ll do what I can to assist
Try your left hand.I’m a right handed and i just start bass fishing last year (September) but trou practise i can cast a baitcaster lefthand smoothly.gud luck
Really depends on what you’re fishing. I have a different setup for cranks than I do for Texas rigging. 7’2 heavy fast, 7’ medium heavy. I mean you can get away with a 6’10-7’6” just depends.
This is gonna be my first bait, casting reel, but all this is confusing me, good video I just never used one before and I’m confused with the tension does versus the brakes.
The tension knob adjust the side to side play in the spool. Tie on a bait and watch how quickly it drops. Adjusting the tension can slow that but you don’t want it too tight or you sacrifice distance. Rely on the brakes to do their job. They are responsible for spool speed.
Finally a common sense video with SLX DC. There are some guys on youtube, that literally blowed up intentionally the reel (also the curado DC), just to make Scorpion/Metanium look better. Is a good reel indeed, actually I am going to move entirely to casting, from spinning. I really enjoy casting reels, never going back to spinning (only probably for UL, small perch, mountain rivers/lakes for trouts, but that would be it).
@@OkieOutdoorAdventures I know riiiiight? They literally set the reel BAD, entirely BAD and wrong, on purpose to show how bad the reel performs. It's true, the iDC4 system on curado/slx is not the same as DC5 from Scorpion, but maaaaaaaan is far from being bad.
Really good video man! I had a question though. I had recently bought the CURADO DC and today was my first time using it, and I spooled it with 30LB braid, and I was throwing it on the number 2 breaking system. I set the tension knob to where there is no side to side movement, as stated in the user manual. But when I switched the breaking system to number 1 and I backlashed pretty bad every time I tried to cast on that setting. Does anybody know if I have to loosen the tension knob when throwing on the number 1 setting? Edit: There was no wind at all when I was trying to cast on the number 1 setting.
The short answer is, it depends. The manual says to set it so there is little play, but I’ve found that I do have to make VERY minor adjustments depending on the weight of my lure/bait and the wind. The guys who live and die by the manual will tell you to set it and forget it, but I’ve had great success doing what I do. I’d encourage you to find what works best for you. I’m certainly not an expert but it works.
I’m considering getting one of the DC, SLX or Curado, but I have question, which ratio to choose? How does it goes if I bring for saltwater. Which rod and what braid size to choose. I’m thinking getting a short rod, with max 5.5feet long, travel 4 pieces rod. Any good recommendations?
As far as ratio, it kind of depends. Sounds like you’re looking for something that can do a bit of everything 6,3.1/7,2:1. I don’t have any experience fishing with it around or in salt water so I’ll defer to others who may have that experience. The shortest rod I have is 6’10 and it handles the reel with ease. Shop around I’d say.. sorry I can’t be more help in that regard
May be a stupid question but if I have like a little less or half spool what if I want to keep the line what happens then do I save it for another rod or something?
Not a stupid question at all. You have a couple options. You can trash it and re-spool new line which it what I normally do. You could tie into it, but having the knot is a weak spot, or you can save it and use it for leader line. Generally I just re-spool though and trash the extra.
dang if i gotta do all that ajusting ill stick with my picifun torrent i never have to adjust the knob i got it set where theres just a tiny bit side to side thats it ... only the brake and most time i run it on about 5 or 6 with no problems
I use standard line conditioner. Specifically I have Kevin Vandams line and lure. You spray it on your spool and let it set. Line will naturally condition to the shape of your spool anyway but this stuff helps.
@@sagewillis. after. It doesn’t take much either. Hit me up on IG if you have it @okie_outdoor_adventures and I can help ya out. You can comment here but it’s easier there
Thanks Okie good stuff. Have you skipped yet using the DC. Can you share your settings with that if you have? Been looking at the slx dc myself so I do appreciate your time.
I have not, but I will. The wind was STUPID insane this weekend so I didn’t get a chance. My buddy Steve skips with it, so I can pick his brain and share feedback with you.
Honestly, no. I’m sure others will have opinions but I can cast as far and as effectively with my Tatula’s. At this phase in my fishing journey I’m convinced most guys buy these just for the sound and the name 🤷🏼♂️
Primarily I use it with my plastics/t-rig setup. I did have the reel on my 7’3” mag heavy frog rod but I wanted to go with a higher ratio there. You can pitch, flip, cast for distance etc.. and this rod is very responsive. With the slower gear ratio I can work my baits a little slower than with the 8.2
hey I’ve been looking at this reel for around 3 weeks, I used a ugly stick bait caster before but it was very cheap and would birds nest on basic cast, the tension nob was broken and I am looking for a new reel. I have enough to buy this reel and I have around 100 CA bucks left over do you have any recommendations on some rods?
The spool tension knob on a DC reel shouldn't be used like a traditional tension knob. The spool with no tension will move side to side. Only tension the spool to the point where it no longer moves along axial axis. Then yes of course use your brake accordingly or user preference. That's how you get the best out of your DC reel.
@@OkieOutdoorAdventures I have the spool tension knob set so there's very little side to side wiggle like the manual says to do, currently have a square bill crank tied on, and it takes approximately 1 to 2 seconds to hit the ground, and the spool stops spinning when it hits the ground without any input from me, on setting 2, i have zero backlash issues what so ever. I'm not even thumbing the spool on setting 2 at all, no problems, on setting one, even if i thumb the spool, i still backlash a little bit. I guess i should just leave it be on setting 2. And be happy with my 30 ish yards casting distance. To be fair to the real though, i have 30lb braid on since its all basspro had in stock
I still can’t imagine that should matter much. It’s pretty weird. I was throwing 50lb braid for some frogging and I didn’t have much issue. That would aggravate me though, you really expect to sling your baits without issue so I can imagine that would aggravate me.
@@OkieOutdoorAdventures Any suggestions as to what i may be doing wrong? I just bought the real yesterday, so I'm definitely a noob at DC reels, and baitcasters in general
If you aren’t back lashing on #2 I’d set it there and dial back the spool tension just a bit until you find the sweet spot between longer casts and where you start getting too much spool speed.
Just saw your comment, my apologies. I want to help but I need some more info - what brand and size line are you using? Are you spooling enough line (90% of spool)? What setting are you using (1-4)? Can you also tell me what type of lure you’re throwing where you’re losing distance?
Try setting 3, and adjust your tension knob. Go tight to start, it won’t cast long but you can adjust back from there. I know what the manual says, but try and set it tight and then make micro adjustments to loosen.
Unfortunately for them to work properly they don’t cast far. If you utilize all the backlash features it does not cast very far. But if you set it up like other bait casters they do cast well but then you’re paying a premium for features you don’t need because your still fine tuning and feeling with your thumb while making cast to prevent line flare or backlash. They also cast a heck of a lot farther when they’re not filled 95% full. 🙂
Ok so maybe there's some lemons out their. Because I might have one of them. I follow directions, set the tension so there's no spool play, set dial to #2 with braided line, and I get a birds nest every time. I tried it on all the dial settings and still get a birds nest even on #4. The only way I don't is if a crank the tension knob to the point where the lure barely drops. But then the cast sucks. Its like whats the point of a DC. I get better tuning with my black max.
I don’t mean to be sappy, but he’s treated me more like family than my own brothers. I’d do the same thing 100 times to have quality people in my life.
This may be more of a comment than a question, but it seems kind of odd that a mid to a little bit higher end reel would force you to have a full spool of line. I have two older Abu's and have never experienced backlash bc of the amount of line you have on them. I'm not even sure I understand why that would be an issue. Line is line. You learn how to cast with what you have to work with. If you're fishing and get a nest and have to cut your line, you shouldn't have to pull 80% of the line off and respool the whole reel. That sounds awful. Hope you have lots of extra line.
You know, I come from that same school of thought. The only thing I can think of is less line could impact the overall spool speed which maybe stresses the brake or something. I’m with you though, there is 100% no time I’ll cut off 80% of a spool, ever.
@@OkieOutdoorAdventures Yeh. The other odd thing, you'd think a "computer/micro chip" would be smart enough to adjust to less line haha. Especially if it can adjust to everything else.
Max braking, skipping mode, etc… as noted in the video is the heaviest setting so I encouraged inexperienced people to start there 🤷🏼♂️ most guys just getting started aren’t going to be skipping, which is also why I labeled this “beginner tips”. Thanks for the comment.
Says two is for braid and mono, four is skipping mode (most braking). Did you by chance overspool, and how much did you adjust your tension knob. I haven’t thrown mono on it very much, but I’d like to help get you squared away.
I have the Scorpion, SLX, and Antares all in DC. Sorry to say that you're wrong. They are all comparable. The technology works the same on all DC reels. These tips DO apply to the rest of the Shimano DC line.

On both my curado dc and slx dc I use 3/4 line on my spool and it’s perfect

Glad it helped!
Awesome vid brotha I just got one today, this helped a lot.
Thanks 🙏🏼 hope you love the reel. Go get ya a monster!

just bought one last night. great video
Very informative video, thanks from Australia
Thank you 🙏🏼
Really want one of those reels bc I really want the dc love your vids share the love ❤❤❤❤
Don't we all?? 😁👊🔥
Facts 😂😂😂
I know I'm a little late at watching this video. Lots of info. I want an SLX DC but just can't pull the trigger. Maybe later this year👍🏻
I’d argue now, for you to save and get the Curado. Just my feelings.
Good video explaining the reel rather than just saying yup it’s sweet buy it 👍🏻
Thanks - I feel like I may have been all over the place. I start with an idea in mind and squirrel a bit 😂
I want this reel soooo badly!!

Thank you, and thank you for watching!
Had one I got for about 125.00 was fine with it, just sold to upgrade to Scorpion DC
How are you liking the Scorpion?
@@OkieOutdoorAdventures I love it. I can literally throw everything. I never go over 1oz but you can do it just my rod isn't rated for that. But you can even cast 1/8 easy but that's with 10lb fluro.
I only use spinning combos but I've been thinking about trying the SLX DC I made a few spinning purchases earlier in the year so I'm sure it will be later in the year before I decide whether or not I'm going to spend the money
Fishing is a crazy hobby. I think it’s important to note that I don’t think you need this to be successful. Heck I’ve caught nice bass on old Shakespeare combos.
I was a spinning guy as well. Until this. Don't be intimidated. Try this,it'll change your mind.

Missed this message a couple days ago. I’ll check you out 🙏🏼
Like with me I would love to try one because of my disability. I have almost zero use of my hands so I don’t have any thumb control on these baitcasters.
Yep, I’ll check it out and see what I can do to help.
Okie Outdoor Adventures don’t spend a lot of time on it it’s really no big deal. I do appreciate the help. Thanks boss!

@@OkieOutdoorAdventures no problem my friend 👊🏻
I’m a little confused about the cast control knob setting. The manual states that it’s not like a normal cast control knob and that you tighten it so that there’s no side to side play. M
Great video, thanks
Glad you liked it!
i heard that jdm version of slx dc(70) are more refine and smooth cuz more bearing, i wish i got my hand on that
That would be nice for sure
How is it for flipping and pitchin?
Very smooth. I had to adjust very little but overall I was still able flip a good distance and precisely, without any spooling issues. I need to do some skipping next to see how it holds up there.
Okies Unite!!!
👊🏼👊🏼
Love the slx but the curado dc is where it's at
Still trying to figure out if the dc is really necessary...haha....nice review
Necessary, not in my opinion. For someone who has a hard time with casting, absolutely. Thanks, I should have said that 😂😂
I don’t find it “necessary” but it’s definitely not just for beginners or people who can’t cast.
What’s the general opinion on which rod to use?
I saw some of those videos too and was not very happy with them.
Especially at the price point. I’m very happy with mine and will likely end up owning more of them.
I don’t have much experience with the Curado but I’ll pin this for you in hopes someone might be able to help you out!
@@OkieOutdoorAdventures Thank you!
Question is do you set it like a conventional baitcaster for each lure weight?
Okie Outdoor Adventures smart ok thank ya 🙂
dang if i gotta do all that ajusting ill stick with my picifun torrent i never have to adjust the knob i got it set where theres just a tiny bit side to side thats it ... only the brake and most time i run it on about 5 or 6 with no problems
I probably made it sound more complicated than it is, but I’d encourage you to go with what you’re comfortable with.
I just bought this reel and I’m planning to use 10 pound fluoro is this fine to use I don’t know if it’s to light line or if it’s fine
It will be fine. I throw 10-12 for crank baits all the time.
I have this reel can use this in a ultralight rod?
I don’t have any experience using it with that application, but I really don’t see why not.
How do you get conditioned line???
I use standard line conditioner. Specifically I have Kevin Vandams line and lure. You spray it on your spool and let it set. Line will naturally condition to the shape of your spool anyway but this stuff helps.
@@OkieOutdoorAdventures sorry to bombard you with questions but do I put the line conditioner on before the line or after the line is on

@@OkieOutdoorAdventures thanks man! Be safe out there, and chat soon.
You too!
Is the casting distance really that sufficient compared to conventional reels.
Honestly, no. I’m sure others will have opinions but I can cast as far and as effectively with my Tatula’s. At this phase in my fishing journey I’m convinced most guys buy these just for the sound and the name 🤷🏼♂️
What rod model do you have paired up on the reel
Apologies for the delayed response.. It's on a Favorite Phantom 7'5" MHF
Okie Outdoor Adventures and what do you use that for?
Primarily I use it with my plastics/t-rig setup. I did have the reel on my 7’3” mag heavy frog rod but I wanted to go with a higher ratio there. You can pitch, flip, cast for distance etc.. and this rod is very responsive. With the slower gear ratio I can work my baits a little slower than with the 8.2
Have you used the scorpion dc?
I have not, but it’s on my list.
hey I’ve been looking at this reel for around 3 weeks, I used a ugly stick bait caster before but it was very cheap and would birds nest on basic cast, the tension nob was broken and I am looking for a new reel. I have enough to buy this reel and I have around 100 CA bucks left over do you have any recommendations on some rods?
I generally fish for bass, pike and lakers so I would say 3-20 pounds at max range of fish I fish for
There are a couple options available, but I’m not sure what you have for selection in Canada. Let me do some digging
Been working fine for the last three years, but thanks for the feedback
U make good vids 🖒
Thanks 🙏🏼
Do you know if the Slx dc makes the “noise” when there is braid
Yep. It’s a beautiful thing
Okie Outdoor Adventures what model do you use of the dc
Right now I have the SLX in 7:2.1
So if you're a beginner using braid do you still use setting 4 or the braid setting?
I’d use the braid setting. It’s an easy reel to work with. Just make normal casts before you start bombing so you’re comfo
Comfortable
I’m trying to find a user manual for my SLT DC 151hg. I’ve looked on the shimano site with no luck
Let me see if I can find a link
Hey okieoutdoors what rod do you ya e paired up with this
Right now it’s on a Dobyns 7’3” heavy. I’ve been using it for frogging but I think I want to move it back to my plastics setup
Okie Outdoor Adventures nice do you use that setup for flipping too
I do, though I’m making some changes this week. It flips and pitches very well. I’m just swapping some setups to take advantage of the gear I have.
How many feet can you cast a 3/4 jig with trailer
No clue
With braid, my slx dc backlashes every single time on setting 1 even with zero wind and calm conditions.
How’s your spool tension? Does it cast well on setting 2?
Mine is spooled with floro but i cant seem to get great casting distance please help 😭
Just saw your comment, my apologies. I want to help but I need some more info - what brand and size line are you using? Are you spooling enough line (90% of spool)? What setting are you using (1-4)? Can you also tell me what type of lure you’re throwing where you’re losing distance?
Are you getting backlashes or just not good distance?
Okie Outdoor Adventures not good distance so then i went to a heavier bait got distance but alot of backlash
Try setting 3, and adjust your tension knob. Go tight to start, it won’t cast long but you can adjust back from there. I know what the manual says, but try and set it tight and then make micro adjustments to loosen.
Okie Outdoor Adventures i fixed the issue i just respooled it with some 2O lb power pro nd now it cast like a champ thanx for replying tight lines 😊🤙
Ill be honest, after using a DC reel, i wouldn't even consider going back. The benefits far outweigh the price range.
I’m thinking about pulling the trigger on the Curado next. I’d love a metanium but my wife might kill me.
@@OkieOutdoorAdventures it’s worth it, get it
Unfortunately for them to work properly they don’t cast far.
Man I’m sorry to hear that. Truly I am. Have you contacted them? Could be a defect like you said.
i got the slx dc reel whit braid at 1 and my spool is really loose and i never backlash 🤔🤐

Just need it to do my taxes and I’ll be happy.
There’s no way you need tips to use this reel😭😭
I wouldn’t think so, but here we are! I’m ready to order me another one, or maybe go for the Curado
Setting 4 is also for skipping pal
Max braking, skipping mode, etc… as noted in the video is the heaviest setting so I encouraged inexperienced people to start there 🤷🏼♂️ most guys just getting started aren’t going to be skipping, which is also why I labeled this “beginner tips”. Thanks for the comment.
Never adjust your tension knob. You tighten it until your spool has no side-to-side movement. That's it. That's what I've read and heard forever.
Well I’ve been doing it my way since I started fishing and it works. Do whatever works for you 🤷🏼♂️
@@OkieOutdoorAdventures interesting.
It’s not something I’m always messing with but I’ll adjust for wind or sometimes the weight of the bait I’m throwing.
Damn so I have to fucking reline
after a couple snags that’s so fucked
So, I will say that I’ve had less issues with this than what is suggested in the manual. I woundnt sweat it unless your spool got stupid low.

I Thought that brake level 4 was for monofilament, if I try to use two my spool will blow up on every cast.
Says two is for braid and mono, four is skipping mode (most braking). Did you by chance overspool, and how much did you adjust your tension knob. I haven’t thrown mono on it very much, but I’d like to help get you squared away.
