  • What's it like to buy a Porsche online? How about shipping a car cross country? What did Porsche do when my car had a near double blowout from dry-rotted tires? Is the Boxster practical? What's it like do daily drive? And how is it on back roads?

    Dude, you're the Mr. Rogers of Porsche reviewers. Very soothing for what you're talking about - a haul ass legendary sports car. Thank you for not having crazy, thumping music in the background. "If I have to be by myself during COVID, then I'm gonna be by myself in a Boxster." Yeah!

    Wow, what an awesome video, a great breakdown of your 981 journey. My 981 Cayman S journey is quite similar to yours, with shipping in the opposite direction - purchased the car from a dealer in the Midwest and had it shipped to Florida. I purchased back in 2016 and could not bring myself to complete the transaction sight unseen, so I flew to the dealer to close the deal. Had I not purchased the car in the dead of winter, I would have driven the car home, but instead used a shipping company the dealer recommended. I too opted for enclosed shipping and they were great to work with.
    I was glad to hear Porsche stood by your tire replacement - tires are a critical aspect of the CPO process. I personally never had anything break in my 981, so the CPO warranty went unused, but I was absolutely glad to have the protection just in case. Truth be told, in my 5 years of ownership, my Cayman has only required routine maintenance, no repairs. I lusted after the Cayman beginning in the 987 generation, and as such built up a pretty lofty set of expectations for the car. I can tell you with 100% honesty that the car has exceeded all of my expectations, it is simple a wonderful car that I, like you, adore driving.

      Glad to hear other drivers having great experiences too. The Cayman would be a flagship sports car from any other manufacturer. It gets overlooked at Porsche but it also gets a lot of great benefits that come from 911 engineering. Exceeding my expectations too!

      What surprised me about the base 981 is that it is great for the track. Since track driving is about smoothness and momentum, it's quite easy for a well-driven base 981 to pass a Boxster S or much faster cars. They do great and still sound great out there too

    what a great video. i have a 2013 base, but with many options. I bought it used( manual) but it’s in showroom condition. The engineering of the car is just a marvel. I had a 911, but i like this more because of the trunks; it stores a tremendous about stuff, including my golf clubs. of course it’s a blast to drive and i would have looked for an S, but way i drive, just not worth the premium price...i have shipped several cars and you definitely did the right thing...one of my cars was seriously damaged, so when i moved from philly to NC, i drove it......mine is a weekender only and never sees rain.....Btw, my car looks very similar to yours and when i’m coming out a store, i always say to myself what a work of art the car is......you made the best choice for the money.....

Overall I ready do not care about raw HP. The way the car handles brings the rush for me. When entering a hwy on ramp that curves with a posted 25mph sign. Then I take it at 65mph and the car is still pulling and wants more. I have named her Joy for the emotional joy and true happiness she brings me.

    Well done...I have as much fun in my 2014 981 S as I've ever had in a sports car. I've owned many. The PASM, Sport plus and PDK surprised me, I had manuals before and thought the PDK might not excite, was I wrong. The gent I bought the car from assured me I wouldn't be disappointed and he was correct. This is an awesome machine. I'm in Canadian midwest so just waiting for Spring. Jump in, crank up the tunes loaded in the Jukebox and listen and enjoy, that includes the engine. I drive my car as much as possible but not as a daily driver. I walk a lot. Hey I'm an old man and this Porsche keeps me going.

    Doug, great video and you are such a friendly guy - I am in very much in the same boat - and this video is exactly how I feel about my 981 - perfect video. If you had gone for a car with PASM you would be scraping your car on your drive even more, as it drops the car by 1 cm - actually the reason it wasnt on my list of must haves and was a negative as just something i wouldnt get any real use out of and something else to go wrong - in the uk we have speed bumps - and Id rather live without the stress of worrying I will scrape the car - love your video - I got mine 6 months ago - I park in the remote more spaced out areas of parking lots, I cant help but look back at it - its a work of art - beautiful - with the top down - I think it looks way better than the 911. Sport Chrono - I only use when the roads clear and you want to have fun, or if I want to over take. If you are in a queue of cars and cant overtake - or cruising through town - you dont want your car beating at 5000 rpm when you are idling around as you look and sound like a complete idiot - and its fraying of the nerves having the car in a state like that. But when you have that clear road and want to really let the car go - sooo much fun. You only live once - not regretted mine for a second. The back roads - a dream - everything you say is spot on. I actually have always hated driving - but since getting one I go out for a drive just for fun - spirited driving is amazing - the car handles so well - it actually makes you feel good - alive - and just cruising is bliss. I go out for sunset drives with my daughter - its just wonderful. PSE - is great but at least something you can retrofit - and you are - which is why its not a must have on a purchase - although a must have in the end.
    My car had to be black, but love yours in agate - and hood colour - your car just looks amazing. Hope you got your PSE fitted.

    Hi from Australia.
    Really Enjoyed the video and especially some of that dry humour.
    Made me laugh a lot.
    I was hunting like you in Australia in 2015 but the choices were limited on East Coast given my specs. (Had to be manual, sports exhaust, mag wheels and agate grey... hard to find).
    I finally found one online but it was in Perth. (I’m in Sydney) = same as flying from LA To NY. Which I did. (6hr flight). Landed. Bought the car after driving and then flew home within 2 hrs. I was nervous like you getting it home. The dealer said drive it ...what???
    through the dessert.???
    What a Moron!!!
    I shipped it via train and happy I did as like you it arrived perfectly.
    I agree with everything you said about the engaging and responsive driving experience.
    Before I bought the Boxster I test drove the market....
    including more expensive cars.
    Audi R8...
    Aston Martin Vantage....
    BMW M3.
    Mercedes AMG C63
    plus older ferraris. Etc
    There was one clear winner and hence I bought.
    Please get the exhaust. .... there is nothing better hearing that sound when in 2nd gear and u rev from 2000 to 5000 rpm just before u click into 3rd.
    Thanks again for the video.

    Great review Doug. I sold my 2006 987 last year and bought a 2013 981 Boxster S from a dealership in VA. I live in upstate NY. Pictures of car looked good. 22k miles on a FL car. Even had a Video walk through done. Looked great. I had it shipped to me and received it in May 2019. Being a Dark blue metallic car the front bumper was pitted so I touched it up with paint. Bottom lip had a scrap. Headlight lenses were damaged from FL sun. I had a scrap guard installed which covers all the scraps. Had expel protection installed on full front half of car including mirrors and door edges and handle wells. Couldn’t drive the car without it fearing more chips to the front bumper. Porsche needs to address this weakness. Rims have some scrapes. Love the car but hate the dark color. My 2006 was silver, which hides a lot of issues. This was my first and last online purchase without first doing an onsite visual inspection. Thanks for sharing your experience.

    This is funny that I just now came across your video, but it mirrors my experience very closely. I think I have your sister car as well. The one I fell for was a Cayman S in Agate Grey, with a luxor beige interior, no pasm, no sports suspension or exhaust, and it has sport chrono. The dealer I found mine at was Porsche North Houston, which is actually a sister dealer to my local dealer in St. Louis. Instead of shipping my car though, we came to a deal over the phone, over text, and with lots of face-timing while the car was up on a lift, and I basically got to see every inch of it before I drove down in my trade-in to pick it up myself. I kinda used it as an excuse to take it on an early road trip. I absolutely love the car. I haven't really been dailying it, but I have put about 5000 miles on it since April this year. Porsche St Louis also told me about the PCA chapter in our area, and I joined and brought it to the track twice so far. It's amazing that the dealer is so welcoming to the idea of bringing these cars to the track that they both sponsor the events and do pre-track tech inspections for free. This thing is amazing on track, and they events they put on are highly organized and a lot of fun, I recommend it. I can't really say just how nimble and sharp this thing feels either, seeing as I got out of a station wagon to get into it, but it's a hell of a lot more responsive than that wagon. Anyway, just left a comment cause I saw so many parallels in our experience and i thought it was a funny coincidence. Happy miles brother, keep enjoying it!

    • @autofocuscarsvids719
      @autofocuscarsvids719  2 года назад

      Yes, there is a manual mode. In sport the car drives just a bit more aggressively than in normal mode. In sport plus, most of the time it chooses the lowest gear it can. When you switch it into manual mode, you can still have sport or sport plus on but you are in control of the gears. The car does, however, downshift if you're coming to a stop and forget you are in manual mode.

    • @autofocuscarsvids719
      @autofocuscarsvids719  2 года назад

      @@jonathanl2748 I use manual mode weekly, not quite daily. I always use it when on back roads. I don't use manual mode until the car is warmed up (the oil temp). Just after start, I use the paddles to shift even when it is in automatic to keep the revs low when the oil is cold but when I'm accelerating briskly. It warms very quickly in even placid highway driving. There are some 2013 and 2014 models that have the paddles. It's called something like the sport design steering wheel. I also sometimes use the gear stick to manually shift in manual mode. In daily driving thought automatic is best... because if you brake hard, the car drops several gears in case you need power to get out of a situation and if you are in manual mode, you'd have to pull the paddle 3 times quickly while braking hard to get the same quick response. On track, the PDK sport plus mode would be smarter than me because I'd be aiming at apexes or braking hard and would occasionally forget to drop enough gears.

But if you are new to sports cars and high performance driving (like I am) and you intend to use it on the track a lot, the base model is a very good car. Both of my instructors at a track weekend of high performance driver education were in base Caymans (one with headers and an exhaust) and they had plenty of car to blow away me and my novice abilities. The S has more power and bigger brakes but the base could carry plenty of speed to offset that advantage on a track. On the street, the extra power of the S makes the car more fun, I think.
