Questuons - If 12volts battery is 3S, (4.2 x 3 cells = 12.6) , then 36volts battery should be multiplied by 3 which is 9 cells 37.8volts right? then why is it 10s? Why is extra line added to it? Another question is - Is it true that you should keep all the balance leads same length? They say if you trim them big or small, the cells will receive uneven amps and get charged unbalanced.
When a 18650 is empty, it's 3v. If you did a 9S battery, empty your battery would get down to 27v which is too low for 36v equipment. The median voltage of a 18650 is 3.6v and battery sizes are calculated using the median voltage. 10s x 3.6v is 36v battery. Regarding the balance leads. While it is technically true that different length leads will have different resistance and therefore balance, most BMS are not that accurate and use such low balance currents that it won't matter. I cut my balance leads often.
When you aren't sure about the quality of the 18650 you can use testers that cycle the battery and check capacity. If you dont have a tester charge them full and let them sit for a week. If the voltage stays the same the battery is fine and not self discharging. If the voltage drops, don't use it, it's self discharging and damaged inside.
Can the battery be charged directly with the xt60 connection you have on there Thanks for the informative vid, i am about to build my first one of these
What do you mean exactly? A battery is rated for it's voltage and max amps. It should not exceed 8 Amps. You can get bigger batteries with higher amps.
@@stevenc22 noticed that in your video, i am trying with a 3s 650mah 100c lipo but it still burns through the strip. Might have bought a low quality strip, i guess
@@christopherbandola6629 yes you can do it. You would just wire them in parallel. But honestly just buying 1 higher amp BMS is cheaper than 2 low amp BMS.

Great video, thank for showing the process! What sort of charging board/BMS do you use for such a battery pack?
I usually use Daly BMS. Good brand, fair price
How do you charge the battery, I see the discharge cables connected. However, how do you charge it. Ie, where are the charge wires?

@@stevenc22 , oo good explaination. I didn't think about it before. Thank you 😊
Do you do a breakdown of where you get all these parts.
Link to the spot welder in the description. BMS i always use Daly BMS. Cells you can buy from Jag35 or Battery Clearance warehouse.
How do you go about testing the cells? Is it enough to balance charge them before installing the bms or is more involved testing needed?

U can put heatsink on this spot welder , or active fan.
Maybe. Have to be careful not to short out traces with hyer sink. I just used it on 20% power and it made it pretty fine
I was about to take apart someone electric scooter for a 36vbattery, now Ill just make one.
Could the same configuration work with 6 batteries or does it have to be connected differently? Trying to get more mah. So would it be called 6p 10s?
Of course. You can add as many parrellel cells as you want just as long as you keep it 10s for 36v. 5p10s or 6p10s or 7p10s ....
What's the amp hours

What do you use to power the BMS? Would a 42v 1.5A Dc output work for 10S BMS?
You don't power the BMS. The BMS stands for battery management system and it connects to the battery and is self-powered from the battery
What current do you put into the BMS to charge the batterys its connected to.@@stevenc22
I want to make the same 36v battery but 50 cls. Can you please tell me which kind of BMS I need to buy. Thanks
You need a 10s bms with the amp rating of the device you are going to power. 30amp/ 50amp ect. Just search for a Daly 10s 30amp BMS

I recommend Daly brand BMS.
Ok thanks, also what are the chances of a BMS failing?

What's your opinion on cell level fusing do you think it's necessary?
I do cell level fuse on my large power wall build. On an ebike, the rough handling of the battery will likely damage the fuses.
