    Great video! I, too, feel the same as you. I have about a dozen cameras, but the Leica is my go-to camera; it's just a joy to use. I debated for several years on spending the money on it because I was quite satisfied with my Nikon F2's, but the Leica stayed on my mind. Finally, I said to myself, I'll never be completely satisfied until I get one and find out myself it's beauty. I have no regrets at all in getting it. I never leave home without it. Thanks for the great video, for it brought a smile to my face.
    BTW, mine is 59 years old and works like new.

    Hi Kenneth, you can try the Leica 50mm view finder SBOOI, it’s 1x ratio. you can put it on the cold shoe of your iiif, once you compose through it you can see everything as if you’re seeing without anything block both of your eyes, expect there is a silver frame just for composing!

    Best camera of all time. I've used a ton of cameras - other Leicas included (including some very, very fine modern Leicas). The M3 wins, hands down. Build quality is simply superlative. The shutter is quiet, the controls are seamless. This is a photographic and engineering masterpiece. I also use the 50 DR, and together, this combination have taken some of my best photographs. I recently had a scare where I thought I lost this camera. Thankful to say that it turned up again, and I was overjoyed. Far more than I've felt with most cameras I've owned. What is mind-boggling to me, is that the M3 isn't the most expensive film Leica you can buy. You can get them for a decent price. Yet, in my mind, it is the finest - by a long way. If you're wondering about getting one, don't wonder - just do it. It is truly impossible to regret it.

      I love that M3 with 50mm DR combo you memtioned. I also love a IIIf with a collapsible 50mm f3.5 because I can carry a Leica in the front pocket of my jeans. The two are a winning combination.

      Would love to get an old screw-mount Leica some day. They're so tiny - massively appealing, for sure. But for the sheer experience, M3 will be a tough one for me to beat, I think!

      Get a IIIf. Or any III. I've been carrying one with a 50mm f3.5 lens in my front jeans pocket and shot at a local antique market and it was so unobtrusive, such the conversation starter, and I didn't have to sling a camera over a shoulder. thefilmphotographer.com/panj/photos/kwfilm111068tif.jpg

    Hi Kenneth, How are you today? Just wanted to ask what is your take on the Summarit 50mm 1.5? Do you recommend it? Is it still a good lens? Worth it? How about the Voightlander 50mm 1.5 LTM older version, do you think its better? Thanks in advance! -Albert

    • @kennethwajda
      @kennethwajda  7 лет назад +1

      I don't know about the Voigtlander 50mm 1.5, but if it's newer than the Leica, it's probably more contrasty. The Summarit is soft wide open, and prone to flare, but I have two, one with fungus which is a nice soft lens, and one that clear that works fine. Just don't shoot into the sun with any of them.

    • @MANILAFILMCAMERACLUB
      @MANILAFILMCAMERACLUB 7 лет назад +1

      Hi Kenneth, Firstly, I would like to thank you for your quick reply. The question, So even if its soft and less contrasty, the Summarit is still a good buy? I am looking for a 50 like yours Summacron DR but it goes about $700-900 still. The Summarit goes about $500. The Voightlander is about the same as the Summarit. I like and preffer the look that the Summarit gets but I am afraid it might discourage me because of the result, not getting good images than good ones etc. First time Leica user here. lol. Whats your take? Thanks in advance for your advices and great knowledge. -Albert

    • @kennethwajda
      @kennethwajda  7 лет назад +1

      I wouldn't pay $500 for a fungus Summarit. I'd look around and find one at an estate sale or antique shop. They pop up, but you can't be in a hurry for it. Watch Craigslist. Negotiate.

    Hi Kenneth, great Chanel and very nice video. I have been lusting after one of these cameras for a couple of years and I have rounded it down to two cameras. The M3 and the M6 but I waver between the two. I usually shoot on my x100T which has a 35mm focal length so I am very familiar with it, that's said I like 50mm also. I like the fact that the M6 supports 35mm and 50mm and has a light meter but I also love everything I hear and read about the M3. If you could only buy one what would you buy? I figure you will say the M3 because you just stated it's your No#1. Do you have experience using the M6? What are your thoughts? Thank you. Kind regards, Michael Falkous

    • @kennethwajda
      @kennethwajda  7 лет назад +1

      I like the M6 too but the M3 feels extra special and if you want to use a 50mm, there's no better finder. If you are right-eyed, which I'm not, you can keep your left eye open and the scene will float into your viewfinder with almost identical magnification. The viewfinder is huge and gorgeous. If you start with the M3, you can always sell it and get the M6 if you find you're missing the wider lenses. Good luck.

  • @buzhichun

    What diopter are you using on your M3?
    I found a very well-priced kit with an M3 which I'm considering to buy (as my first first foray into Leicaland), but the gorgeous finder probably won't be as much fun if I have to move my head around all the time to see the full frame.

    While I own an M3, I don't use it as much as I use my normal go-to 35mm camera, which is a Leica M4. It is basically a M3 with some older issues (carried over from the Barnack style Leicas) replaced... such as an improved (mostly) film takeup mechanism, a real rewind know, articulated winding lever (yeah, I know some people don't like the plastic, but mine is 50 years old and looks like new), the funky Leica-specific flash sync ports are replaced by PC connections, and it is natively compatable with a 35mm lens. Otherwise, it's pretty much the same camera.

    I use an M2R with the 50mm Summicron DR, and I really can’t think of any other setup that I would want. For my personal needs, it remains unsurpassed in terms of function, tactility, and design.
    I also use a shoe mount 50mm viewfinder (SBOOI), a carryover from my Leica iiif. For quick candid shots, I find it more accessible than the internal viewfinder. The viewfinder is 1X magnification without any perceptible dampening, so it’s exceptionally clear.

      In the mid-1960s, the US military procured a number of revised M2s, which differed from the normal M2 in that it was fitted with the same rapid load three pronged winder found in the then upcoming M4. That is, you didn’t have to pull the spool out to reload. These ‘military’ M2s were designated KS15-4.
      However, the military canceled the contract, and between 1969 and 1970, Leica rebranded the leftover stock as M2-R, wth the “R” apparently standing for rapid. They sold roughly 2,000 of these limited cameras exclusively through a New York dealer.
      Many of the M2-Rs also came coupled with a late edition 50mm Summicron Dual Range lens, although the Summicron Mark III was already released. On Ebay and other sites, you’ll often see these late edition Summicrons referred to as “military”.
      Serial numbers for the M2-R range from1248201-1250200.
      The KS15-4 does not have any special markings, aside from it being equipped with the rapid load system. Reportedly, a subcategory of the KS15-4 is M2-S, but this should not be confused with the same designation used for normal M2s that included a self-timer.

    Hi Ken, Another great vid. I actually have the same camera and lens combo. Beautiful! Yhea.. that dual Range goggles? I have the goggles. Apparently they can only be used when doing close up on things? There is a stop block on lens for regular focus and then you have to pull lens over stop block then put on goggles for close ups. It's a little bit of a time consuming process, You can't leave the goggles on all the time I suppose? As far clarity, that lens is crazy sharp.

    Hi,
    Thinking of getting one but considering the cost and even worse still if the unit is a lemon, furthermore I have to get the lens to go with it which one to get and so it goes on. I am playing with Nikon film SLRs so much cheap and having so much fun with different models. And more importantly sell them later with too much losses or donate them away, quicker that way.
    I think you need to put out a follow up video on the ins and out of this model what are the differences between different models, single and double throw(I don't know) and what lenses to get, and so on.
    Cheers enjoy some of your videos.

      See if a good one for a good deal comes along, then go for it. If you're open to it, you may find it. The single stroke just advances in one stroke instead of two. They were worried that long strokes would tear the film, a fear that was unwarranted. Get a 50mm f2 of any vintage. Even get a IIIF with a 50mm for less. Take a look at those--they're pocketable!

    Like you Kenneth, my ocular dominance is of the left. I also wear glasses, so diopters are the way to go for me also. I used to rationalise left eye dominance as correct for a right hander given the brain usually makes reference to its bodily opposite. However, I understand that only a third of the globe is left dominant....which puts that theory to bed!

      By the way I found out some weird thing. When I was about to post my comment I had to go grab the closest camera. My 60D was at hand. I rarely shoot digital (I mainly use this camera for video work) but I grabbed it and it came straight to my left eye.
      Some weeks ago I was recording a gig and carrying my Pentax K1000 under my coat. I decided to let the tripod do its work and snap a shot of Mr. Ranaldo with my film camera. Surprise surprise...it came straight to my right eye.
      I paused for a moment and stopped recording the video to see which eye would be chosen. I went instantly to my left eye with the digital camera.
      Maybe it has to do with the size of the camera...I don´t know. Gotta fetch my grandpa´s old Exacta to see about that.
      I´m a lefty as well by the way.

    • @jeremoe1
      @jeremoe1 8 лет назад +1

      That's interesting. Like you said, the size of the camera may be the reason you select (unconsciously) one eye over the other. I think the main reason I use my right eye is because I can't close only the right eye. When I try to close only the right eye, both of them close. Weird, huh? But, in essence, it might be safe to say that my right eye is the dominant one.

    • @kennethwajda
      @kennethwajda  8 лет назад +1

      You can tell which eye is dominant by holding your arm out, put your thumb up, and place it on something in the distance. Close one eye, then the other. The dominant eye will keep it there in place on the object, and the other eye, it will jump over.

    If I had to have one camera it would be Rolleiflex with a 3.5 Xenotar lens.
    You know why.
    It's easier to get great results.
    Medium format is for serious photographers.
    Leicas are like Rolex watches. Only investors buy them. Ansel Adams used Medium and Large format.
    Even David Bailey uses a Mamiya 67.
    35mm are toys.
    I still use toys though.
    A £50 Zorki 4k with the awesome Jupiter 8 f2 50mm lens.
    A good toy for 10x8 inch prints.

      neil piper
      I think you miss the point.
      I use several formats from 110 up to 5x4 (I know - 10x8 is better). I use ancient folders, including 35mm, and Box Brownie cameras for the look they can give. They are also fun. I choose the camera for the situation and my requirements. Ever tried to lug a Mamiya RB around town? Certainly not the best choice for candid or street photography.
      Some use their Leicas and other 35mm cameras every day and get great results; they are justifiably happy with their cameras.
      For sheer quality and everyday ease of use, though, I would recommend the M3, though David Bailey was known to use an Olympus Trip.

    • @GindahouseC
      @GindahouseC 6 лет назад

      Lugging an RB67 around town is easier than everyone makes it out to be. I've walked around town for up to 4h with my RB in my hands (without strap) and never had any problems. You just have to adapt a bit to carrying it around. I even find it easier to carry than my Pentax 67 in a way (even with a 3D printed grip, the pentax is so awkward to hold). I wouldn't agree that 35mm cameras are toys, but definitely like medium format better. Mostly shoot medium format even though I had some cool 35mm cameras (canon ae1, a1 with 55mm f1.2 ASPH, f1 new, yashica fx3 with carl zeiss lenses etc). That was until I picked up an Xpan and fell in love with it. Will probably be picking up an M3 body next week and try to find some cheap lens for it for now (Still a student so have to save up for everything ;)). Can't wait to try it out!
