Thats quite an unusual M3, If it came from the factory like that it would have been a custom order as it has some M4 or later parts on it and makes me wonder if it has the Leica fast loading system fitted. Another RUclips who works in a camera repair store found an M2 modified at the factory in exactly the same way. I wonder if they where originally a pair? maybe custom made by Leica for your friend or the original owner if he hasn't owned them from new.

Two things need to happen, IMHO:
1. We need a good scanner that costs US$500 that produces rich files without exaggerating graininess
2. Film needs to be cheaper

B and h puts film on sale all the time, may not be Tri x but it’s fine.
Scanning is poor . The grain becomes pixelated and it never looks right imo
Buy a Leica M Monochrom CCD its as simple as it gets then scans for you ;)
Friend was press photographer. Put 35mm lens on for bumpy groups and crowds especially when close to subject and deeper range of focus (crop for subject) and no need to frame shot carefully with viewfinder. He had Leica for bomb proof build quality not arty composed images
Scan flat on your glass with ANR glass on top. 35mm comes out looking fine, hit some unsharp mask in photoshop and it looks perfectly usable. If it's a shot I REALLY love, I put it on the enlarger.
Thank you for this. I too quit film in 2003. As a professional photographer my clients wanted digital images. I did not like the quality of printing back in that day now the quality of printing is excellent. I just recently pulled out five of my best film cameras in 35 mm SLR I have one old Balda Bessa 1B, from 1957 which is a rangefinder. Still works. So now I'm back shooting and developing my own black and white film for fun. My client still want digital but when I shoot for me I shoot film only. I think more and shoot less and my film pictures turn out much better because of that. Hope to see more of your film posts.

Nice video. I didn’t read all comments so not sure if anyone else mentioned this, but your friend’s M3 appears to have a self-timer lever and a film advance lever from a Leica M4. I’ve never seen that before. Interesting! Steve/New York.

I just recently bought an M3 double stroke. I haven't heard used it yet but will soon. I also have an M10 that I have been using. I used to develop and print my images- I had a bessler 23 enlarger to do my prints-I love black and white! Glad you like the M3!

A thing I appreciate when using a film camera is the fact that you do not "Fight" the camera as we often do with digital: you take your time, evaluate the scene, chose your setting based one experience and fire the shutter. if things get wrong, it's your own fault, but you cant' blame the camera automatism trying to jeopardize your work.
Setting are simple: you chose a film roll, set your aperture or your shutterspeed, then you try figuring out the proper exposure, and that's all. You often have a needle or some led guiding you, but it forces you to take time and understand what you are framing. Too often we just shot and pray, knowing if things are ugly we can take other 10-15 pictures in a few seconds, even bracketing them if we like, with instant preview and Lightroom adjustments. Exposing to the right is an example: you don't try to get things right, but a way to boost results later.
We have become lazy and complacent.

The M3 is one of the best tool ever made ... defying the time and out of fashion... not perfect but built like a Swiss watch ..my best friend under my jacket since 25 years... I will never by a digital M to expensive for what it is !
I shoot an old M2, works for me. The real magic of Leica is in their lenses, of which I have several. I also use my Leica lenses on my Fuji mirrorless bodies.

I personally was pleasantly surprised the first time I put the M3 to my eye with a 50mm lens. It is very satisfying composing and focusing 50mm with the M3.
You had some magnificent shots. Film is on a comeback and the M3 is a perfect choice for your decision to shoot with old school technology which in my opinion is a purist way of expressing art.

Hi Sulanto,
I also have an M3 and bought a 35 mm to add to my 50 and 90. This is a very good trilogy of focal lengths. The 50 mm frame lines have a fair bit of space around them which is nice to anticipate what's is entering your frame. But it also allows for a very close approximation for the 35 if you are able to push your eye right up to the eyepiece and scan to the very edge of the viewfinder frame. Not great for quick shooting but on slower study I can get almost perfect framing for 35. It may not be possible to do this for you wear glasses. Glad you enjoyed the blast from the past and I'd be interested in more such content.
Thanks for those tips. On problem I had was definitely, that I could not see those 50mm lines with glasses, so about half of the picture area was not visible. But, if you can push your eye very close to the viewfinder, I guess a 35mm is not that bad.

I started photography two years ago with a lumix gx80.. after 1,5 year of the start of my photography hobby a friend gave me as present a film photo camera ( canon AE-1). I realised that I didn't know anything about photography ( I still don't know) even if my photos was attractive. All the novice just take a camera and start shooting with the help of auto mode and we have good result but on manual everything is a mess. I didn't know what is the exposure, iso, shutter speed, and with the ability that we can delete some photos we shoot everything with no reason.
But using film is not like just shooting, you need to think a lot about what is nice, what setting should i use even if the film is proper for that photo.
Now I start to understand the wonderful word of photography, you don't shoot what you see, you shoot what is going to like you after the development of the film or the editing of your photo.

I returned to film completely and I am highly interested in more content like this. I have some film cameras, also an M2 with 5cm Summicron. I mostly shoot ILFORD Delta 400 and the results are awesome.

I shoot film and digital about 50/50. One of the notable things is how much more compact 35mm cameras are than their full frame equivalent, especially lenses, almost M43 sized. Definitely do more film related content, Matti.

Noticed that too! M4 owners would go the other route by swapping the m3 lever to the M4/M4-2/M4-P
Could that be the issue with the “off” shutter speeds too? Early M3’s used to have dials with 25/50/100 times and not 30/60/125 like the one in the video. - Also the rewind knob shown is from a later S/N M3 as early ones have one “hole” slightly off-center instead of the later “two-holed” ones…
It seems it was kind of a Franken-M3….
Last fall I got the film photography Itch and started looking for a camera. I found a couple options that family and friends had but they had not been used in so long they needed a CLA. When I inquired about the price and also the cost of film and processing it was very discouraging and I just kept shooting with digital. I do really love the look and tonality that film has, and not having to sit in front of a computer and edit every image would be very welcome. I love the process of creating images but dislike post processing. Maybe one day soon I will bite the bullet and try shooting some film once again. Looking back at old childhood photos they look so beautiful. Film really does have a unique and very pleasing look. Thank you for the video and inspiration, I hope you enjoy your time shooting film again.
Thanks! Try shooting jpeg and don't do any post processing. However, it's a good idea to keep your photos archived, so you can find a specific photo later. Good thing with film today is, that it's optional. You can get nice film cameras for about $/€ 150 and if you shoot a couple of rolls a month, it's not that expensive.
More film, yes please. Actually , I liked your film photos more than some of your other work. I have quite a few film cameras as I started shooting age 6 in 1957 and I rarely get rid of cameras. I have a problem with Leica rangefinders despite owning a IIIg and a M3; I hate them. My professional photographer father always loved Leica and I always loved Rolleiflex. The crunch came when I started work and could buy my own quality camera. So under his eye I was marched to the professional shop and my money was exchanged for a Leica. I was as miserable as sin like a storm cloud all evening and the next morning the offending camera was returned. I went out on my own and returned with a gorgeous Rolleiflex SL35 with two Zeiss primes. I loved it. Well eventually the Rolleiflex was traded for a gorgeous black Nikon FM2n and we always argued over which was better; Nikon or Leica. Well Dad died of course and I inherited his IIIg and M3. I did try to like the M3, I even ran half a roll of llford HP5+ 400 (my favourite film) before giving up in disgust and throwing the film in the bin. I will give the Leicas to my nephew next time I see him as dad said pass them on. So now I always put film in my FM2n, never my little Rollei 35s; the Nikon is my perfect film camera. I do have a Fuji GW690III with a negative the size of an Instax Wide for contact printing in my retirement but, havent used it yet so, all is to play for. More film topics would be well received - have fun ;-)
Thanks! You are the second person to say my film photos look better than my digital😀I have owned the M6 and didn't like back then, but now I like to shoot on any M. I have also owned the FM2 and really liked it, one of the nicest film cameras I have used. I have already decided I'll do one or two film topics each month.

Hmm, this is a "FrankenLeica" - the film advance lever is actually a modern, M6 style lever, not the old full-metal one the M3 came with. And the 35 mm lens could be used to get more leeway when shooting (whatever error you make, the subject will be in the frame ;-)). The Fomapan 400 is a nice stock, but not actually ISO 400, more somewhat around EI 320; while I find the grain a bit coarse, the tonal response is actually quite nice - I've used it with medium format and liked it (I normally use color negative film, though). I'm quite happy to use m43 for digital and film for larger formats (mainly 6x9 at the moment, but the one or other old Leica is in the mix, too).
And yes, you could do the one or other film related post. As long as you have fun doing so (this is crucial ;-)), I'd like it!
Thanks! I noticed the film advance lever too. Who knows where this camera has been or what it has seen during its 65 years. Because of the exposure problems I can't say too much about the Fomapan 400 yet, other than it looks like ok film for that price.
@@mattisulanto Having a "slow" shutter might actually have helped with the lower sensitivity of this film stock. Definitely worth the money, as long as one is willing to accept the downsides (like less sensitivity, and a bit shoddy coating quality, but the latter can be redeemed in Photoshop ;-)).
Also the self timer lever is different to the normal M3 as well. You have an unique camera :)
the shot which contains the reflection on the river and a dog aside to it is simply peaceful and joyful 💯

Very interesting and thank you for your video. I also have just received/purchased a Leica M3, (a 1965 model with a 35mm summicron f2.8 with goggles). Now, I'm looking to get a 50mm summicron and will start shooting film again after about a 20 year hiatus. In the past I had the M6, M4-2 and M4. I've got a developing tank and some Fomapan 100 and can't wait to get back home to Italy and start shooting. All the best to you !

Halo Matti! Great video :) and great to see you had a bit of fun again with film. Since you are a "film veteran" you will probably already know this but if you roll your own, say Ilford HP5+, it will be much much cheaper. Especially if you do your own development! Thanks for the tip. I know that, but if you count the initial cost of the bulk film loader, film canisters etc. you have to shoot a few rolls before you'll start to see the savings. In my case it would take maybe some years, because I don't shoot that much film any more.
Hi Matti, the same happened to me: I bought an M2 and I shoot it together with other cameras, analogic and digital. All my digital cameras are set up like they were pre-digital, more or less. Film I do develop myself, using stand development (less agitation + longer times allow to do something else, in the meanwhile).
And then I buy cheaper but decent film, like Foma 100 and 200, FP4+, Rollei Superpan, Adox etc...

Long ago (about 1979) I traded my Leica 3g system for a Canon F1 system. I just needed SLR versatility for my professional shooting. I’ve always missed that camera. But I did keep my coat pocket camera that I carried all over the world while in the USAF. It was my Kodak IIIc. I still have that camera. I last had it CLA’d about 10 years ago. You’re inspiring me to get it out. My current go to digitals are a couple of Canons (if I must) and my Lumix and OM cameras. Over time, the Lumix cameras are seeing more and more use.

The 35mm lens issued for the M3 has an extra binocular device built on, often referred to as 'goggles'. This brought the full 35mm lens angle of view into the 50mm viewfinder.
Why not get the camera serviced?
I have 2 each of the M2 and M3 bodies. They are wonderful to use, for the reason you described.

Very interesting you mention the problem of a sticky shutter. I have a Leica M3 I've owned since the early 1970's and the shutter no longer works. I have 4 lenses including the wide angle with the viewfinder attachment and it was a great camera to use during its day. I used a bulk film a winder in a changing bag to roll film from a 400 ft. roll down to a 35mm canister. The review is great and for me it brings back a lot of memories. Thank you.
Thanks for sharing. You can have your Leica serviced, but it's not cheap and may not be worth it, if you are not going to use it.
Hi . You should periodically run the M3’s (or all film Ms) slow shutter speeds if you do not plan to do photography for extended periods of time.

Some really nice shots! Fomapan definitely has a more classic look, in particular the 100 ISO, with lots of grain. I personally love shooting Foma 200 and pushing it to 800, gives some fantastic contrast and smooth but noticeable grain, a bit of a lo-fi aesthetic. HP5 is one I'm really eager to try. Keep the vids coming :)

Yay! You tried film again! I shoot both (too many vintage film cameras + Lumix G85 (often with adapted vintage lenses)) -- and love the similarities and differences. Now that it is getting warmer, I am finding it hot & sweaty to carry three cameras (2 film and my G85) on me when I go out shooting. Yes -- film prices definitely are not what they used to be!!! I have found Foma a good "bargain" film for 35mm and 120. Your pictures -- despite a quirky shutter -- were awesome! Love the midtones and the touch of contrast at the very brightest and darkest ends of the spectrum. Thank you for sharing -- and I would definitely be interested to see more of your film adventures *AND* your continued Lumix coverage!

@@mattisulanto -- Great! Don't need to compare film vs. digital -- they are just, different, and we can enjoy both. Even with my G85 (being 16MP) I know that I can get a crystal clear photo in good lighting conditions when I need to, whereas with film I do need to think about the ISO/grain, how contrasty the film is or is not, the color rendition of the film (Fuji vs. Kodak!), and of course how well the camera and lens are working! Which is why I tend to always bring my G85 along when I am "shooting film." (plus I can share my digital photos faster) But that doesn't make it less fun, just different. I have no Leicas though!!! :-) And yes -- the older the equipment the more finicky it can be, but it still is amazing to get out and take pictures with a camera 40, 50, 60 or more years old! Even older than me!!!! Thanks!!!
This inspired me to get out my Leica M4 and load it with Kodak Tri-Ex. Expensive here in Los Angeles as well...

Fomapan has been described as having a more old school tri-x look, it's pretty awesome, and even better considering how much cheaper it is.

That is what Leica and film photography are all about. Concentration on photography and not operating an imaging computer. Thanks for sharing your experience. I also use fomapan 200 creative in my MF and 4x5 cameras for exactly the same reasons you mentioned, the price of film particularly Kodak has gone through the roof . It is a very decent emulsion but let down by poor quality control during the coating stage. I just had to write a whole roll off for some strange dark scratches all over emulsion. Perhaps paying 25% more for Ilford HP5+ would be worth it.

I have an m3 and also a 35 mm voightlander. I found if you press your eye right up to the viewfinder the full frame outside the 50 mm frame lines is actually very close to the 35 view. My framing is very accurate doing this. As you have glasses you probably can’t do this though.

Digital cameras maybe one day will surpass film cameras in quality, but they will never surpass analog cameras in joy of its photography process. Thank you for your video. Own and started now b/w photography using my new/old Exakta’s and Leica’s.

As I write, June 16 2002, the price of Tri-X is around £11 in the UK. Fomapan is a good film, but it scans quite grainy for some reason, I have tried different scanning methods and the grain is still very obvious, but not in a good, pushed Tri-X style. Ilford in the UK make excellent film, and their “Kentmere” film range is worth looking at in 100 and 400, and you can find some film packaged as Ilford Pan 100 and Ilford Pan 400 which is great value if they sell it in your country. All Ilford films scan well.
Very similar price also in the UK. So far I like the Fomapan 400, but I also want to revisit the HP5 and try some of the new films, like the Kentmere. Thanks for your comments! I will only reply to this one😀
I also had a long break between film and than digital. I’m now shooting mostly film for the slowing down aspect, i find digital to be higher pressured mentally.
Film is great for slowing down.
I own or have owned many cameras - digital Lumix, Sony a7riii, Canon, film Leica M and screw mount, Nikon, Hasselblad, Rollei, 4x5 and 8x10 view cameras. The camera I always return too and enjoy most is the M3. Film is always more fun but mostly its the camera ergonomics and the satisfaction in using it. Yes, keep the film reviews coming please. And buy a serviced M3!

I also decided to shoot some film recently after about 20 years. I found a beautiful Minolta CLE and shot a few rolls before the pandemic. One thing I noticed was the beautiful transition from very bright areas to pure white that the film captured. It’s smooth and soft, rather than slightly abrupt, as I’ve become used to with digital sensors. Were you struck by that as well? I shot on Ilford Delta 1600 and Fuji Portra 400, I believe. I was just generally happy to see how beautifully film renders and after seeing my first photos it all came back to me, like I had been shooting film continuously all the time.
Scott Fineshriber the Minolta CLE is, imho, the camera that Leica should have made the successor to the Leica CL. The CL sold so well that it scared the Leica directors, it was hurting sales of the M5 which was not well liked. The value of the CLE is going up and up as people realise just how perfect it is as a M mount compact camera.
I was infected by the virus by a M6. Before I photographed with Canon Fd, then with a Pentax D10, and still until today with Nikons. I never really stopped shooting film, as I didn’t really like and still don’t like the outcome of digital sensors. So I photograph digital as well as film and still prefer the analogue workflow from beginning to the prints from the darkroom. My favorite films are either ilford hp, the fomapan 400 or the Agfa 400. The prices in Germany are quite reasonable. The Leica and Hasselblad cameras got me, and after the M6 I started collecting analog cameras a few years ago, all of them are in use and working condition. Thanks to a friend who needed money and sold me his M6. My favorite Leica is the M4 and then the M2... always good light! Stay safe and sound. Greetings from Germany to Finland.

I have a question. If I wanted to shoot a 35mm lens on my Leica m3 and I don’t have the googles. Will I still be able to focus? I just won’t have frame lines correct? But I’ll still be able to see the split focusing part right? 😊

Your M3 seems to have borrowed the film advance and self-timer levers from an M4 ;-)

Thirty5mm Lens Photography the M4 has a plastic advance lever with a distinct angle. The M3/M2 have a curved metal advance lever.

If you like film development it is a lot of fun to shoot film. I still shoot BW on film.
If you like the not having to think about camera approach try fujifilm, the controls on the body and lens are amazing you can set the fundamentals without turning the camera on.
I have some history with Fujifilm, but I'm very happy with my Lumix. What I meant by that was, that it's very different to shoot film than digital. Any digital camera is extremely complicated compared to something like the M3. We just don't realize it, because we have gotten so used to our digital cameras, which also are superior in many ways.

Wow, I like your pictures a lot. Only a good friend would lend thier Leica M. I have only 50mm for my M3, but that 35 is a superb lens. I like Foma films very much, but prefer the 200. Wish I could afford Kodak film, but times are tough. I would like more film content.

Using film makes you think more. You are aware that each time you press the shutter that it’s going to be quite expensive , you have a limited number of shots on the roll so bracketing the hell out of it is out of the question, so you think about exposure and composition
You might look into getting a Leica III series camera if you want a rangefinder and don't want to spend the money on a M3. You can get a working IIIf for a fraction of the cost and there are some good M39 lenses that would be fine for type of B&W street photography you were doing.

I am also an old sea lion that started in photography when digital cameras didn't exist. I do not feel nostalgic for those times but I would like to try a couple of rolls in two cameras in particular, Minolta CLE and Contax G2 with their corresponding set of lenses.
Thanks! I had both the G1 and G2 long time ago. The lenses were amazing, but I didn't like the bodies. Too many automatic features, but they looked really good. Who knows, maybe today I'd feel differently, if I had a chance to try them again.

I like the automatic functions and I use them a lot, most of my photos are taken with the camera in "P" mode. I think that the automation in the cameras is like the electronics in the cars, you have to learn how it works to relax and let yourself go.
@@alvaro5162 I like automatic functions too, but on those Contaxes the implementations were not the best. Also, on modern digital cameras the automatic functions works so smoothly.

Wow. This camera looks like my Lumix GX880 but with view-finder. And pictures looks very similar to GX880. It was good idea to create whole video back and white. And it's nice to hear that film is from my country. :) By the way will you do more photography challenges? (I love to learn new things and compare it with professionals and others amateurs)

Nice video. This M3 is kind of "special". It has all features of the 1955 M3, but the film advance lever is the one of the M4. The M3 had the solid metal lever without the plastic grip.

Yes, I noticed that, too. Also the self timer lever and rewind release lever are M4.
I would suggest to use some lighter fluid plus graphite. Inject it with a syringe into the speed mechanism of the. camera. It will solve the sticky problem. I learned that more tha 30 years ago from an expert Leica user.. I did it several times on old Leicas and it worked very well. Yes, please do more film videos.

Thanks. I used just a normal development, continuous agitation for the first minute and then 10 seconds after every minute.

I probably would, if I used this kind of camera a lot.
I'd like to see some videos adapting Leica rangefinder on MFT cameras and maybe some comparison with equivalent Pana-Leica lenses with equivalent focal length. That would be really nice.
