  • In this video I talk about the topic of paganism and magic in Anglo Saxon England, delving into the sources we have and what people may have been doing and the gods and goddesses they worshipped. I also show you clips of a trip I took to an open air museum called Jarrow Hall, which has Anglo Saxon houses and information on the monk Bede.

    The vocab you described reminds me of the German word “Hexenschuss” for pains in the lower back “Witch shot”.

    I had noticed you hadn’t posted after being so regular for quite a long time. And was worried about you. I was so glad to see that you had put up a new video. I’m sorry you were so sick. Glad you’re better and back.
    Fascinating isn’t it? And you can see how Christianity and paganism were all kind of wrapped up just my some of our Holidays we still celebrate. Christmas and Halloween, or Day of the Dead. (Día de Los muerdos). And to think every country in the world has a flood in its ancient history. Even to this day there’s blowing out the candles of your birthday cake for a wish to be granted. Or 4 leaf clover. Or rabbits foot. Even the Virgin Mary giving birth is quite magical. Jack Frost, house elves, ghosts or spirits. Those that are said to speak to the dead. Even angels seem almost faerie-like, with their wings and abilities to save and protect. Personally I believe there’s truth in all of it. Stories aren’t passed down for thousands of years without truth behind them. And it’s really sad that there isn’t a better written history available to us now. (Not saying that there never was, it was probably destroyed by the church at that time, to keep the people in line….or whatever they wanted.) And I grew up in a haunted house, and heard and saw many many things that would qualify as magical. Certainly Not scientific. Take care!

    Thank you for sharing your research and knowledge 🙏 I wonder if the Romans destroyed much of our written evidence of folk traditions. If you find yourself visiting the South Coast, I highly recommend a trip to Buster Ancient Farm, just outside Portsmouth and Weald & Downland Living Museum just outside Chichester 💫 Wishing you healing blessings 💫💜

    Fantastic. I love this. This is something that I believe will be very healing for some people more than you know. Because connecting to your roots is quite powerful. This was something that I always thought more people needed of, and I think Tolkien was right. As a kid I read two of his books. It always seems like stuff like this is soup for the soul in a way. It’s interesting to see some of the overlaps in things with folklore all over the world too.

    There is a hypothesis, based on place names, that some of the tribes that inhabited Britain before the Romans invaded spoke Germanic languages. I would be interested to see more research on the topic because the idea that everyone in Britain before the Roman invasion spoke a Celtic language is based on the assumption that they must have done so because the only languages that survived the Roman and Anglo-Saxon invasions that we know about are Celtic.
    Scotland is a whole other can of worms, I've even seen arguments that Pictish may not have been an Indo-European language, and other arguments that there were already Q-Celtic speakers in Scotland before the Scots king invited the Irish over.

    Toilken was definitely wrong about the english not having any stories. Maybe none that he liked, and maybe he didn't consider the briton or anglo pantheons english? It's a misconceptions that Anglo mythology is just norse mythology with different names. Also we have our own celtic stores. And medieval folklore, all kinds of creatures and famous stories like Robin hood and so on.

    • @Lunaleodrune
      @Lunaleodrune  7 месяцев назад

      I think he is referring to stories older than that, pre-medieval, pre-Robin Hood and King Arthur etc, and even separate from Celtic or Irish mythology. We don't really have written record of any English stories from pre-Anglo Saxon times. Thanks for watching!

    The idea that the English came into Britain in a large scale invasion following Romes collapse doesn't sit that well with me. It's an event that can't really be verified by archaeology.
    The Romans certainly brought Germans into Britain as Auxiliaries to act as protection against the Native Celts. But following Romes' exit from the island there is more evidence of co-operation and intermingling between the Celts and the Germanic peoples. This extends to the progenitors of kingdoms like Wessex and Mercia that seem very blurred with Celtic identity.
    I can't help thinking that possibly there was a strong connection between the Jutland peninsular and Northern Europe going right back to the days of Diggerland. Possibly there has almost always been a definite Anglian influence/presence in the east of the island of Britain.
    The Romans certainly said that the population of southern Brutain closest to Gaul was more Gaulish in culture. Maybe the same can be said for the Eastern part of Britain extending into the German Sea?

    • @Lunaleodrune
      @Lunaleodrune  7 месяцев назад

      I think I may have phrased this a little oddly. I didn't mean they invaded en masse right after the Romans left, but more that the Roman cultural influence mostly left the country and over time, Germanic people came and blended with the culture and added their influence. England is certainly a big mish-mash of all sorts of cultures.
