It goes without saying but I meant to verbalise it clearly anyway - I'm speaking primarily about British folk magic in this video because that is all I feel qualified to speak on as that's where I live. Folk magic is for the FOLK and local to your area and your heritage, so go explore and dig into your local traditions and history :) There are no barriers to entry and you need nothing, so go experiment and enjoy the process.

"The ancestors were very intelligent" Yes! This is 100% true. I love studying indigenous peoples of all cultures. They lived in harmony with the land truly lived/live in a way that is/was harmonious with nature....The culture of the celts is beautiful, even their alphabet, the ogham, honoured trees and the land.....I feel when you go to a new place Europe, Africa, Asia, Antartica whatever, you should do a ritual to honour the ancestors and spirits of the land, ask their permission to walk there and make a small offering. Love your content! You may also be interested in a podcast called The Emerald, which touches on some of the topics you mentioned

I absolutely agree with you on all points(except for the podcast with which I'm unfamiliar!)
I've actually settled on a practice that only works with the very local folklore & genus loci- the spirits of place where you are. For me that means things that I can walk to in under an hour. I collect my healing & protection stones at the river 5 minutes away - no expensive crystals here!😊They truly have energy & work that they want to do to help you! Plants, flowers, & trees that I grow or forage are native to the area. I visit the graveyard a few streets over for other needs..The only exceptions that I make are salt, because those from this area would've imported it also, & tobacco. My children's father was Cherokee & taught me Tobacco medicine. Since it's a part of our family, witches of long ago would've done the same. My children's heritage also factors into what animals I work with. I've moved twice since I realized I was a witch, and it definitely is a lot to learn, but gives such a deep appreciation and understanding of an area and Spirits there. I''ve also found that the magick of place is strong & willing to work with me as long as I honor them with gratitude and offerings. For me, this type of practice helps me to feel connected not only to the land, but also to the ancestors.
I'm sorry about that lengthy comment! I know you didn't ask, but I thought perhaps it would be of interest because of your comment...or not!😂😂😂

I have connections to Ireland, Scotland, England, the Netherlands, Denmark and Cornwall. So it has been very interesting learning about that as well as the why my ancestors left the uk and Europe to come to NZ. Thank you for adding to my book list lol ❤

Not a witch, but very interested in the folk aspects. You don't come off as rambling, but rather you are clearly knowledgeable and well-spoken. I love that you approach the why. Just FYI, it's a little hard to read the white gothic lettering when it's backed by your skin and hair. Nevertheless, a lovely video. I'd love to hear more about specifically Irish and Scottish practices and lore. Thanks so much!

Thank you, Luna, for the uplifting and organic video about this beautiful topic. ❤️
My mom and her oldest sister are no longer with us, but years ago before the internet they manually traced their lineage back to Scotland, Ireland, and France. My father's lineage went back to England, but I'm not sure the local area. My mom's Scottish roots go back to Clan Hay, which has a specific geographic origin and provides a place to start!
Many of my New World ancestors lived in Vermont like I do. My family has no links to the Salem Witch Trials, although that historical period shows that local folk witchcraft carried over here from the Olde World and must have been present throughout New England. There's a lot to dig for!
Lastly, I have a fraction of Abenaki Native American blood as well. Native American cultures practiced magic regularly, and it would be fascinating to learn the Abenaki customs--if they were well preserved....

❤ This my first time visiting your channel. I appreciate your work.
I'd like add to your comment on how the writers discovering folk magic would "vilify or discredit the validity of the practices" by proposing that these historical writers were likely spreading the information (subversively) of the craft while also appealing to the "powers that be".
Think of it as a medieval era version of Schindler's List, wherein Schindler was in a perfect position to save the lives of as many Jews as he could while still seeming to condemn them to horrible fates in concentration camps. These writers understood the importance of recording the practices that were being obliterated, much like Schindler did his prisoners, but also had to consider how best to do so. If they had blatantly said, "This magic stuff is cool! It really works. And here's how to do it...", their heads would end up on the chopping block along with the witches and cunning folk being persecuted.
Though it's sad that those tried as a practitioners had to meet horrific tortures and ends, it is the written records of these traditions (usually passed on orally, and inevitably would have drastically changed over generations) that remain unaltered for us to research now. For me, THAT'S the fascinating part! Like Anne Frank's diary told of the terrors the Jewish people faced in WW2, we too are made aware of the atrocities of the witch trials. But like Schindler's list of Jews saved, whose traditions and histories could be passed on to other generations, so to did these recordings of witchcraft make it to us.
I would also suggest to look into Fez Inkwright's books on plants in history. They cover cultures worldwide, their uses, and the spirits attributed to the plants❤

Lovely video! I think you and i must be related some way and since im 53 don't EVEN be telling me im old enough to be your grandmother! I like to be quiet most of.the time, too, and i live in my head. You are way more advanced than i am, im just coming to these understandings in the last few years. So good job! And you are doing really well with your videos.
My family came from Scotland on both sides, one side in the early 1800's i believe, the other side before 1901.when.my grandfather was born in Pennsylvania. I may plan to go to Scotland in the non rainy season some year (live in desert now and more than two overcast days together i get very sad 😅). But it seems like there is a lot of lovely witch history there and folks are brought up with the ideas. The puritanical belief system is still going strong over here whether Christian or not and it is still quite frowned upon to be too 'out there' with beliefs and practices. Getting more acceptable, but I certainly don't share it with anyone but ine or two people.
You've done a beautiful job with decorating your new home.

Thank you so much for this, it was just what I needed. I’ve been interested in witchcraft and my ancestry for years but I had no idea how to go about it apart from charging crystals and watching how other people do things, but it never felt personal. I’ve recently started a mini book of shadows kind of thing, where I write down poems, spells, chants, etc. I’m really into anglo-Saxon paganism right now. This has given me some resources and idea of what to do, so thank you so much! Did you see the super blue moon last night??

I just found you! I have that exact book sitting on my dining room table, waiting for me to start reading it. My roots go back to Scotland, Ireland, England, Normandy, Denmark and Schleswig-Holstein in the far north of what is now Germany. A part of my family-the Peaches-came across from England to the US in 1629-landing in Marblehead Mass and remaining there through the 1800s. That means they were very close to the American witch trials, which were taking place in the late 1600s in Salem, the next town over. They Peaches were a super-ornery lot, and much more likely to be doing the torturing rather than being tortured for witchcraft themselves. I know a lot about my ancestry, because I had an aunt who did genealogy professionally. But even with my knowledge of my past relatives, I still know very little about what they practiced when it came to spirituality. Probably I know more about my Irish ancestors, who were from the West of Ireland where some non-Christian practices seem to have survived. But even those supposed pagan Irish practices might just be the romantic inventions of Lady Gregory and Yeats at the beginning of the 20th Century. They were attempting to create or revive an Irish Identity, stirring the passions of the Irish to rise up against British oppression. Europeans who have rejected the faith forced on us centuries ago have so little to go on. Not that the church is all bad. I, too, had a good experience with church, at least as a child I did. But the Roman occupiers-and then the Holy Roman Empire-robbed us of our true Spiritual heritage. We need to get “it” back-whatever “It” is.

This is a great video! Checked out your videos as I am a British practitioner, Thank you! I moved away from organised religion three years ago after having classed myself as a born again Christian for a long time. The one point I agree on is the combination of Christianity and witchcraft feeling strange to me as I am dealing with religious trauma and struggle to see why it was the case. What I have read though is in some areas (don't know if this applies the The UK) the syncretic nature of religion and witchcraft sometimes came about out of safety. That a practitioner could cast spells under the guise of appearing like a prayer and the involvement of religious passages kept thier work concealed. Again not 100% sure but it would make semse that individuals needed to appear to be following the croud for thier own safety. Love your content and look forward to watching more, from a UK pagan!

Thank you for the video, I thought you explained it all very well. I’m actually an English Druid (I’m fascinated with a lot of the shared history between Witchcraft and Druidry but that’s a whole subject in itself).
This video came at an interesting time for me as I’ve been doing a lot of soul searching recently and your video has actually confirmed a lot of my own recent thoughts. Even though, like in Witchcraft, Druidry is traditionally rooted in Celtic tradition, being English I’m very interested in Anglo-Saxon mythology which is even more scarce and the folklore if anything seems to be even more localised.
Hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend. (Btw I actually really liked the sound of the wind in the background and actually thought it added something to the feel of the video, especially a video about a nature based religion. The connection to nature is strong in this one). You have yourself a new subscriber

It's probably just going to be Texas Folk magic. I want to use Scottish/Nordic but I'm in Texas. Also, I am about to read Emma Wilby's book about Isobel Gowdie and I am hoping it convinces me that this wasn't all just nonsense spat out during torture. I struggle to feel connected. Genealogically, my maternal family is Scottish/English and we have been able to go fairly far back. My paternal side has been more difficult due to stowing away aboard a ship to escape being conscripted in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870. So finding out more than his being from Prussia, it's been difficult to go further back. Wow, very long-winded. Sorry. I live in the US. While I have great interest and respect for the First Nations, I worry about appropriation of a culture that I have no ancestral ties to. Even learning about local folklore becomes problematic in that most of the literature was not written by the First Nations, but instead from Europeans in very biased ways. It is confusing and further amplifies my feelings of disconnection. I honestly am not sure how to.

This verse has caused the mutilation, torture, and murder of good women, men, & CHILDREN, many of whom were not even remotely connected to witchery! They were just herbalists, midwives, elders, the disabled & mentally ill!, but they were hunted like prey by little men with fear filled personal agendas- just like you & the ultra conservatives that you serve.

Can you really 'just do what you wan't' ? For example, if your making bread you use a recipe, you cannot just say I don't like yeast so I will use sawdust instead. Controversial? So what. Stand on the shoulders of giants, that's why we have ancestors, to build on their foundations. Or, you do you m8 and start from scratch, hope your not reinventing the wheel though.

    • @kjmav10135
      @kjmav10135 9 месяцев назад +1

The difference is, we don’t have any recipe. What the old ways were before the Christians occupied our lands have been lost to time. We only have the tiniest clues about the old ways. So, we experiment until we come up with our own recipe. If you use sawdust and find that it doesn’t make the bread rise, you’ve experimented, and you will turn to some other ingredient next. Those of us with origins in Europe have had the spiritual recipe book stolen from us. Our relation to our ancestors severed. Of course we have to reinvent our spiritual “recipes.”

@@kjmav10135 What a great attitude you have, experimentation is what we humans do very well and yes it is needed in a way, but I do think we have more spiritual crumbs than you currently see. Its in your very bones and if it feels right there then you know your getting somewhere. We think and feel and wish in the same way as our most ancient ancestors, as it should be.

Yeah you can 'just do what you want' magical practices are supposed to be personal, with your own personal correspondences. Red is usually seen as something that brings love, but to others it might symbolize war and hatred. Your own personal beliefs matter in magic just as much if not more than the old ways

Thank you for your video. I found your message to be very honest and enlightening. I think you get your message across in a very soft and engaging way. I have recently been awakened and can't get enough of this topic. I have denied this part of my life due to cultural beliefs that I have known for so long to be wrong. I have crossed over my very own Rubicon and know it is right. You are very appreciated. Keep you magick coming.
