Here in Wales Samhain is Noson Calan Gaeaf which basically means the eve of the first day of Winter. November 1st was considered New Years Day. So from Wales I would like to wish everyone Noson Calan Gaeaf Hapus/Happy Halloween!

November 1st wasn't considered the Celtic New Years Day.

      No it isn't.
This idea was put forward by philologist Sir John Rhys (1840 - 1915) based not on early records but on contemporary Welsh and Irish folklore which he felt was associated with new beginnings - so he was projecting modern customs back into the past to arrive at his Celtic New Year. He also observed customs at Halloween on the Isle of Man that were more normally found at New Year which he felt reinforced his theory. However these customs were also still practiced on the island at New Year, leading to the obvious conclusion that they had migrated to October 31st as a way of fundraising and merrymaking.
There are no early medieval records to confirm Rhys's theory one way or the other - but it is a theory based on flimsy evidence and not a proven fact.

Luna...this was so charming and so very well done!! Samhain/All Hallow's
Eve has always been so magickal for me, and remains so, even at age 71.
My Husband and I shall be lighting candles, doing Tarot, making Colcannon,
and raising a wee drammie to our ancestors. It is so important to keep
the Old Ways, the Old Religion alive. Thank you for this.

Love these history sort of video about how traditions came to be. I do find it a bit odd as I live in Australia so while everything online is about Halloween it's the wrong time of the year for that here. There's very few pagan calendars made for the southern hemisphere, we (most people and shops) still celebrate the same things at the same time, and I feel that's kinda wrong like they are not authentic in a way. I don't like how commercialised everything is now.

I often thought it must be odd celebrating the european agricultural/light festivals in the southern hemisphere. Even bringing in greenery and lights for Yule must seem odd when you are in the middle of Summer. Pagan traditions are about observing the natural world in your area so it must be really frustrating for you. Wishing you a Happy Beltane or in Welsh Calan Haf Hapus!

Fascinating look at history. I think the resurgence of these holidays is, especially in the U.S., due to commercialization. Perhaps, though, there can be found a positive result in that it has brought about new interest in learning about their history. ❤

In breton language the months of November and December are still today refered as Du and Kerzu which means "black" and "very black".
When it comes to traditions i find similarities between the irish samhain and what my grandparents used to do here. They didn't call it samhain but in a way they celebrated it.

Luna, it was lovely spending time with you in this informative video. You have such a charming accent too, (I'm in America). I just adore all things mystical, and you brought up so many interesting points. Thanks for the soul cakes! I've celebrated Samhain with walks in the fallen leaves by day, appreciating the changing of the season, burning candles at night, building fires in the woodstove and baking acorn squash stuffed with rice.

The turnips I could find in the US were small, so I carved a rutabaga, (similar to a turnip). Took a long time to gut it, but it was very cute in the end.

Brilliant, I love learning from RUclips videos, I thought for ages that Halloween was 'halo' - 'ween' so raising saints - saints originally meaning 'those that are allowed in heaven' (You don't have to be ordained a saint by the pope or monarch - interestingly heaven was originally a norsk term). Thanks for the info, have a great 'dark period'.
