On "My Car Story" we're in the West Suburbs of Chicago on 10-19-21.
We're looking at a 1960 Pontiac Bonneville Convertible in Coronado Red Paint with the Factory 389 CI V8 engine.
The car's Owner is George Hansen. George’s had this car since 2010. George remembers seeing when a neighbor had one and always hoped he could get one, and in 2010 that happened.
    ENJOY!

Now that's a car that you don't see every day! The 1960 Pontiac Bonneville isn't a common car unlike the Chevrolet cars of that era. This is even more special being a convertible. The engine sounds healthy, and the interior is top notch. I love the classic cars of that era!

Production of the 1960 Pontiac Bonneville Convertible was 17,062 units. GM was successful in selling convertibles at that time. Air conditioning was becoming more common in Cadillacs and Lincolns at that time...but it was an expensive $430 option in a Pontiac. Bonnevilles in 1960 had genuine walnut inserts and available leather upholstery...both very deluxe features in a medium priced car. Aluminum hubs and drums were a $107 option. The 1960 Pontiac lineup was Catalina, Ventura (basically a deluxe trimmed Catalina only sold as a separate model in both 1960 and 1961...then available afterwards as a trim option but not as a separate model), Star Chief (leftover model name from the 1950s that persisted until 1966), and Bonneville. Big Pontiacs were popular in Canada but used the shorter Chevrolet chassis, smaller Chevrolet engines, and narrow track (but used the same fenders, trim, etc.). Before 1959, Pontiac had a reputation as a rather dull, if somewhat overstyled car. But the limited production 1957 Bonneville and the wide-track 1959 models changed that image. This example has Coronado Red paint.

Hi Lou, another beauty, bless this guy for having it... My father had a 59 Old Dynamic 88 wagon, those single brakes are fine for 1 or 2 stops and that's how they were then. NOW that brakes are so advanced you notice the difference but then it was 'normal' to take over 200 feet to stop from 60.
    AMAZING restoration BTW

Those beautiful illustrations in that brochure were done by Art Fitzpatrick and Van Kaufman, otherwise known as "Fitz and Van." They did Pontiac's advertising illustrations too, from 1959-1972, and they made the cars look even lower and wider and in beautiful settings too. A totally unique look in advertising. Thanks for featuring this 1960 Bonneville.

I think their advertising account with Pontiac ended with the 1971 models. Afterwards, they illustrated with Opel in Europe for a few more years. Before Pontiac they illustrated for Buick from 1954 to 1956.

¡Excelente video, y saludos cordiales!

George has a beautiful car. My Grandpa had a red like that one two door hardtop Bonneville. He had the seats covered in thick clear plastic uncomfortable and noisey seat covers as was the furniture in his living room haha. It was SUCH a beautiful car. He replaced it later with a silver/grey '67 or '68 Bonneville four door hardtop. It was a beauty and powerful but never seemed as cool to me as the '60. I remember a GTO ad in the magazines that said "LET GO OF THE GRAB BAR CHARLIE, YOU'R TEARIN' OUT THE DASH!" You mentioned in the video about "body rock". When you revved those Pontiac engines the torque rocked the entire car over to the right. My first car was a '64 GTO 4speed.

Beautiful car and George is very nice guy. I love that sort of "candy redhots" color. Perfect for it. 1960 was the last year of the true "yank-tank" cars, as they called them across the pond. Only Cadillac would continue the "dog-leg" A-pillar up until 1965 on their formal cars.

I had a 1960 Bonneville Convertible back in 1969 before i went in the Army, but someone stole my car. It was like a brownish color and the multi interior with the 389 High Performance then. I loved that car and use to wax the car every weekend back then.

Man that is a beautiful car, in a beautiful color.. the 389 four barrel was a pretty good Engine 333 horsepower, and 425 ft lb of torque.. in 1960 that was the big dog engine next to the tri-power which had 430 ft pounds of torque and 348 horsepower.. they didn't come out with the 421 until 1964. I had a 1967 Grand Prix with the 421 and tri-power, that car could really melt tires. Thanks a lot Lou that is just a beautiful example of 1960s automobile art.

Gorgeous car, Lou. I don't think I could get that thing in my garage, it's likely way too long!! Love the retractable soft-top. This era's convertibles were a true work of brilliant engineering. By comparison, I have a 2020 Mazda Miata Soft-Top. There's a clasp in the center of the roofline that you un-clasp and shove the entire top back and down in seconds. It's not as elegant as these older cars but efficient and quick. Of course the Miata is a midget by comparison and so much easier to design a system around that would do this. I love 50's/early 60's cars. If I only had room for one more... ;)

Cranberry red is a great GM color.
Pontiac was selling narrow tracks in Canada which were Pontiac bodies mounted on Chevrolet frames.
What's nice about those Pontiac V-8 blöcks is that all of them from the 326 to the 455 were externally identical. Which means, you could swap the weakling 389 connected to a hydramatic with a 455 connected to a Turbo Hydramatic 400 without anyone noticing a visual difference, while harvesting generous Brake-torque burn-outs

    • @richardrice8076

    • @bobbybishop368
