On "My Car Story" we're in the Suburbs of Minneapolis MN on 6-2-22.
We're looking at a 1958 Edsel Pacer Convertible in Yellow Paint. The car comes with the factory 361 CI engine, and a push button automatic transmission.
The car's Owner is Fred Aherns. Fred’s had this car since 2014. Fred shares he used to be the local President of the Edsel Club where he shares he’s owned over 30+ Edsels. He shares this car was a California car, and it is so clean, that he had to keep this one.
ENJOY!

Just great looking car
The Edsel wasn't a very popular car, and that's what makes these cars unique. The Pacer is the top trim package, and this car has a cool color scheme. It's engine sounds healthy, and it looks like it's in pristine condition. Love these cars from the past!
Hi Michael, Thank you for viewing, sharing your knowledge, and glad to read you "Love these cars from the past!" :-) Lou
One of my oldest uncles had a 1958 Edsel. My cousins told me they were afraid to go on the highway with him because he usually drove over 100 mph! I asked him about the Edsel, and he said he did not care how it looked. It was a great car and very reliable. I remember that car because he brought it to our house for a wedding or something. Since I was born in 1957, that shows you that he probably did have that car for many years! Another thing I remember is that he had a lot of miles on all his cars because they lived in the Twin Cities area. Thanks for showing!
Hi Jed, Happy to read this car brings back memories of your Uncles car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
Thanks to Fred for allowing us to see his beautiful Edsel!! Have always been intrigued by the Edsel since my childhood (the 60's) Always wonderful to see an auto enthusiast who has preserved these great pieces of automotive history!😉
Hi George S, Happy also Fred enjoying sharing his car with us. Glad to share this car with you, Lou
I've developed an appreciation for the edsel as I've gotten older. This one is about as good as it gets
Hi FUBAR Model Yard, Cars have an amazing way of looking better with age, Lou
I read the book “Disaster in Dearborn” which was the story of the Edsel. According to the author the Edsel was actually not a failure in the marketplace, but the rug had been pulled out from under it by Robert MacNamara. At the initial press introduction he announced that the car was being discontinued. How could it possibly succeed when the company that produced it wouldn’t stand behind it.

I read that book also. They actually sold pretty well. The real disaster was guys who bought Edsel dealerships.
McNamara also didn’t like the two seat Thunderbird ( I own a black one). He was a bit happier when they added a back seat. Not by much, but he was happier.
Some people’s kids….

He went on to advise President Kennedy, on military matters. If that had happened earlier, we would have gotten a 1961 and up Edsel
Beautiful Edsel! The one thing that I don't think was mentioned was that the Citation was actually the "top of line" 1958 Edsel, not the Pacer. Also, I respect collectors personal touches, after all it's their car, but this model would benefit so much more with wide whites and original hubcaps. You can easily get modern type tires with the original look for a better ride.
Hi joseph, Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-) Here is a video of the Citation for you to enjoy, Lou ruclips.net/video/IEwimTILyZs/видео.html
@@loucostabile And the Corsair was 2nd from the top. But I think the wheels look great in black and the rims are also very striking.
I agree restored collector cars should be kept original.
Great car. I could imagine how great it would be for crusing around backroads and small town America. Love the color combination, looks great 👍

Very nice Edsel - I think they are under appreciated in some ways.
This colour combination and details like the rims are very cool.
Thanks for bringing this to us Lou!
Hi Jeff, Happy to read you enjoy this "Very nice" car :-) Glad this car looks "very cool". My pleasure sharing with you. You're welcome, Lou
The 58 Edsel is one of my favorites. My dad had a 58 Pacer four door when I was a kid. Fantastic restoration. I wonder where he had the padded dash restored. Not many places do those.
Hi JWelchon, Happy to read this is a favorite of yours :-) Glad to read this brings back memories of your Dads car. Lou
Magnificent restoration!
High praise for this restoration :-)
❤️ oh boy, my favorite toy as a model, wenn I was a kid 💘
NICE !
Love the color combo
Happy to read "Love the color combo" Bob :-)
REAL NICE CAR LOU REALLY ENJOY YOUR VIDEOS
Hi Han, Happy to read you enjoy this car :-) My pleasure sharing with you. Appreciate the kind words on the video, Lou
Wow its a car that i havent even knew it existed im sure everyone would look at it at a carshow to figure out what the heck this daum 50s beauty is
What would a car like this worth 🤔
Hi Ahmet 42 Selim, Happy to share this car with you :-) I'm not sure what value this car would have if sold, Lou
The owner is correct @8:24 the Pacer was the top trim level for the "smaller" Edsel's sharing its body shell with the Fairlane. The longer wheelbase Edsel like the TOTL 1958 Citation, shared it's body with the Montclair. Besides the strange name, and controversial styling, they competed with Mercury's pricing, thereby becoming redundant. For '59 all Edsel's shared Ford chassis
Hi charles1964, Thank you for viewing and sharing your knowledge. Lou
Now thats one long rear bumper
Agreed.
Very nice😀
Hi Michael, Happy to read this one is "Very nice" :-) Lou
Tele touch in steering wheel wait till he has a short ... I have worked on 2 Tele touch set ups this is why I'm bald .....lmao 🤣
:-)
Love the car, just I'm just not feeling the wheels. Go with the hub caps
Hi Vincent, Happy to read you "Love the car" :-) I like the hub caps too. Lou
Man oh man the Cragars really complement the color scheme on this beauty. Thanks Lou, this one's a knockout!
Hi Bruce H., Happy to read you enjoy the rims on this ride :-) You're welcome, Lou
Edsel's were likely good cars but it doesn't take much to figure out why it was a sales failure. With Ford, Mercury and Lincoln, the Ford Motor Company had just too many models. I bet a loaded Edsel wasn't too much cheaper than an entry level Lincoln and with the Lincoln being nicer looking and vastly more prestigious the Edsel was doomed. It seems only GM could pull off so many models/brands......great video Lou, thanks.
Hi Mike, Thanks for viewing and sharing. Glad to read "great video" :-) You're welcome, Lou
It was the Citation that was the top of the line in Edsels loads more trim and longer wheelbase. I have a 59 Edsel Corsair here in England UK
Hi Matt, Citation...like this one. ruclips.net/video/IEwimTILyZs/видео.html Happy to read you have an Edsel too. Thanks for sharing. Lou
Would look so much better without the Continental kit!!😊
Hi Jay, Thank you for viewing and sharing what you like, Lou
The Edsel was overhyped and didn't live up to the hype not a bad quality car but a marketing mistake it's different for the time it's was to be the 4th offering from Ford almost like with GM with Olds and Buick but a great car to take to a show since not many are seen it's gets attention today think it's great to see in in that condition
Hi Larry, Thank you for sharing, Lou
Quem foram os"gênios que desenharam e desenvolveram o Edsel?
O automóvel teve uma merecida vida curta.

@@loucostabile Thanks for you,Lou.
Ford👍
Thank you for viewing and sharing.
From what I recall..being born in 52'..the Edsel wasn't popular..that being said..now I can appreciate the beauty and styling of the car..what a gem this one is..I'd take it in a red hot minute! Thnx Lou!
Hi David, Happy to read you enjoy this "gem" :-) You're welcome, Lou
They were a little bit ahead of their time on styling. In the 70's the three piece grill was used on many Ford and Mercury models. The push button transmission selector was never a popular item and putting it 8n the stear wheel hub just made it worse. To the best of my knowledge only Chrysler was persistent in pushing the buttons, but eventually they discontinued them too. Now the levers are getting replaced by a dial, but that is because of the computerization of automobiles an linkages are being replaced with digital electronics.
That dashboard was ridiculous I can't even imagine how intricate the detail was to restore that. Good job Lou.
HI Bill, Thank you for viewing and sharing what you notice. Lou
@@loucostabile The dash is a work of art.
Either that dashboard wasn't assembled on Mondays and Fridays or the assembly line worker putting them together had to show a steady hand and pass a breathelizer test, directly after having punched in before work
What an unusual car Lou!! That dashboard has many instruments & dials in styles i've never seen before.
Hi Tiger, Happy to share this car with you :-) Lou
WOW, even the manuel book is mint - a beauty a little like a batman pimp car from ancient days ... so many fun gadgets .. such awesome auto engineering from 1958 -- it makes you wonder who were these geniuses ? our of this World stuff .. love this car Lou -- fun stuff -- great video
Hi Noel, High praise for the car, Engineers, and the video :-) My pleasure sharing with you. Lou
Nicest Edsel I've seen. Perfect color combo and love the chrome wheels. My Mom and Dad had both the 58 Pacer convertible and the Bermuda wagon. Thanks Lou!
High praise Sego fla :-) Glad to read this brings back memories of your Mom & Dads car. You're welcome.
Amazing how just a set of chrome Torque Thrust or Cragar SS wheels make any classic car look great
Hi Cousin Strawberry, Happy to read you enjoy the rims on this car :-) Lou
I had a set of Torque Thrust II's on my '62 T-Bird. They really set off the silver blue metallic paint. Too bad I sold it six years ago. This is the nicest Edsel I've ever seen. Great job, Lou!
A beauty, and sharp looking dash too _ You have got to love the paint colors on these '50s cars. . . :>/
Hi Dr Candor, Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-) Lou
What a great car. Thanks Lou for bringing it to us.
Hi Jimmy, Happy to read you enjoy this "great car" :-) You're welcome, Lou
Pretty nice restoration. I don’t think I’d want to own one. I don’t know what they were thinking when they did the front face on this one!, but the side and back view is nice. Thx again Lou!
Hi David, Happy to read you appreciate the restoration of this car, and it's okay this one is not for you. Hope you see many more cars on this RUclips Channel you'll enjoy :-) Lou
I'm sure that Edsel proboscis had a lot to do with it failing.
It may be just me but for the first time today I see a vague resemblance of the Edsel front end to the 59-60 Bonneville - Catalina front end design. I must be hallucinating. LOL. Thanks for the vlog.
Hi John, Thanks for viewing and sharing what you see. You're welcome for the vlog, Lou
The owner has the Beautiful Original Wheel covers hiding in the trunk, and is riding around with those HORRIBLE aftermarket rims! ugh 😑
Hi bk14nyc, He did share the hub caps seem to fall off, however I like the hub caps too, Lou
I never was an edsel fan but this 1958 is beautiful. good video Lou.
Hi Leroy, Cars have an amazing way of looking better with age, Lou

Hi acts2210, Happy to read you enjoy this "Great car and restoration" :-) Lou
Great looking Edsel ! Great colors too ! Thanks for posting Lou. !
Hi Rudy, Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-) You're welcome, Lou
¡Excelente video, y saludos cordiales!
Hi Jaime, Appreciate you sharing your knowledge of this car :-) You're welcome, Lou
Great job Lou beautiful Edsel! I never met a drop top I didn't like
Thank you Robert. Many drop tops on this Channel for you to enjoy :-) Lou
Pacer and Ranger are model names for Valiants in Australia.
Hi Barrycuda, Thank you for sharing your knowledge, Lou
A flop in its time and a wonderful icon today
Well said.
No, I think it is a beautiful restoration of a flop! Many years later, flops have their own beauty. Like an ugly woman who ages gracefully.
Tip top shape & clearly fit for a President. It rides as good as it looks. Thanks, Lou!
Hi TheGunfighter45acp, Happy to share this good looking ride with you :-) You're welcome, Lou
👍🔥😎🔥👍
:-)
Love this Edsel this car was Henry Ford the 2nds biggest flop in auto history but now seeing this car is a breath of fresh air very odd and iconic vehicle
Hi Danile, Happy to read "Love this Edsel" :-) Lou

High praise :-)
Thank you for the share, Fred and Lou.
You're welcome Chris :-)
A rare beauty 😍😍😍😍😍 Thanks Lou!
Hi motorTranz, Happy to read you appreciate the rarity of this car :-) You're welcome, Lou
I remember Jack Paar saying the grill on this looked like an Oldsmobile sucking a lemon!
Hi Brock, Thank you for sharing what you remember, Lou
That’s great!!
Thank you for Sharing 👍😁🙏
Hi Derek, You're welcome. Thank you for viewing, Lou
Gorgeous Edsel! Wow!
HI Todd, Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-) Lou
Beautiful Edsel with Con't kit. Love these cars... all years. I noticed the Aqua blue Edsel sitting in the bushes!! And also noticed the 1960 Edsel hidden near the back by the trailer! This is a very clean car, even the engine bay! I never knew where the door locks were located. WOW, that was great to see. The view while driving was fantastic. A very elegant looking hood.
Hi Brian, Happy to read "Love these cars" :-) Interesting you're noticing all the Edsels. Stay tuned as I'll have something coming up you're going to enjoy, Lou
it caught my eye great color combo great ride P.S.take the sundeck off the back and save a set of tires lol '''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''
Hi Scrappy Junk, Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
Those Continental spare options were great for transporting 2 more kids, when the vehicle itself was full.
Those Cragar wheels look great, on that car.
Fred should lubricate that door hinge, before it pre-maturely wears out. That squeaking is about as annoying as the proverbial scratching the chalkboard routine.
If I'm not mistaken, the shorter-wheelbased Edsels were mounted on Ford frames and the longer versions were mounted on Mercury ones. The ones mounted on Mercury frames could get ordered with the brand new M.E.L. bigger block 430. The one-year-only Marauder engine option had higher compression and Tri-Power, giving it 400 horsepower.
Fred's missing tooth betrays him as being one of those who has bought his first Edsel for the purpose of getting into fistfights, at traffic lights, with anyone making fun of his car
Hi Al Dente, Thank you for sharing your knowledge and what you notice. Lou
Edsels are not the ugly cars they were made out to be. Yes, the horse collar grille is unusual looking, but such a design was very uncommon then. Several car models have a similar style grille these days.

Edsel didn't sell well. Most people thought they were ugly. The Car was supposed to be a step up from the Mercury. I have actually only seen one in person in my life time. It was parked next to my dad's 1960 Falcon in the church parking lot one Sunday. I had never seen one and I asked my dad what it was. He told me it was an Edsel and a few minutes later he said, "That is one ugly car." After that I only have seen them in pictures or on TV. As rare as they are, now they must make good collector cars. To be honest about them they should be good cars mechanically they are basically Mercury's in body, and Ford's in chassis and power train.
Hi Daniel, Happy to read this car brings back memories of the Edsel you saw :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
Really surrised that they never raced in NASCAR. Saw a couple at the local drag strip back in 57 or 58 with standard shift. Thrink the grill shape really turned peo[le off., Great 50's color combo!
Hi 2098elk, Thank you for sharing, Lou
I don't think I seen any except magazines. Truly interesting. Always been a fan of 60-70s but appreciating the 50S more .
Hi Tim C, Happy to read this one is "Truly interesting" :-) Lou
The President of the Edsel club is saying the Pacer was top of the line!! The Corsair and Citation were above the Pacer. The Ranger was the entry level

Even with mag wheels on it, it's still not a pretty car. What was Ford thinking when they came out with this butt ugly car?
Hi Hairy Larry, Clearly this one is not for you :-( Hope you see many more cars on this RUclips Channel you'll enjoy :-) Lou
What a treat
Happy to read you enjoy this "treat" :-)
All 50s cars would benefit from mags and bigger tires
Very cool 😎

Greetings Alejandro, Happy to share this "AMAZING" car with you :-) You're welcome, Lou
The original hubcaps would have looked better.
I like the original equipment too.
I just said the same thing!!!! And this guy is the Edsel President??? Oh Lord.
chingon car mr lou
Glad you enjoy the looks of this car mr chon.
好漂亮的车👍👍谢谢
:-)
Get rid of those hideous rims!
Nothing hideous on this car.
Hi Morgan, I usually like rims or hub caps from the factory, Lou
Those Rims are HIDEOUS 😢
These cars were gorgeous. So unique! The problem was the media. Hot Nod, Car Crap, Popular Hot Dog magazines, pretty much wrote off Ford. Even to this day. I walk into a grocery store, grab all the Shittylet magazines and put them in the ladies hygiene aisle. Thanks Lou for tracking these old Ford’s down. 😀👍
Hi Cobra Charmer, Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-) Lou
Isn't this butter nut yellow?
Might be.
Hi there I have just seen this video and I am lucky enough to be the next owner of this beautiful Car if the previous owner would contact me that would be great best regards to all Colin
