Program Notes: Five Serious Pieces was written for pianist Joel Hastings (in the same manner as The Piano’s 12 Sides). The work was originally conceived to be a much larger work, perhaps entitled The Piano’s 18 Sides or something akin to that. Just as with The Piano’s 12 Sides I had consulted closely with Joel during the writing of these pieces, sending edited snippets back and forth, directly from my piano to his. Then, unexpectedly, Joel suffered a heart attack that took his life at the age of 46.
As he was the performing force for these works I decided to stop writing the set with these first five pieces. As a suite they present five very different character pieces for piano, at times introspective, charming, humorous, and brutal. The common thread among them points to a trait in Joel’s artistry I came to lean on as a composer. Namely, these pieces require an uncommon level of technical fluency and the utmost devotion from the artist who chooses to construct them. They are presented here for just that brand of pianist - one whose hands are both familiar with the great works of our instrument’s history and relish climbing mountains of musical expression.

The first piece is definitely the same as his saxophone sonata at the beginning

This is an amazing work, but I need help. I understand that no 3 at 8:04 is inspired by Debussy (Claude), Philipp (solfeggietto by CPE Bach), and Brahms (the slow movement from Brahms' 3rd piano sonata), but what piece by Debussy is he alluding to? Also, could Emanuel be referring to Chabrier? Does Saint refer to Saint-Saens? Does anyone know the specific works that he drew influence from for this particular piece?

It could be the first piece from the Children's Corner suite:
