Facebook marketplaces replete with examples of people who decided to take my car body and make it into something that it wasn't designed to do and that they can't control. The car person who knows what they're about and knows how to drive will always win in the end.

Car culture is a classic example of "How DARE you enjoy something different from the way I think it should be enjoyed!" Especially post-COVID for whatever reason, discourse in the car community has been increasingly ugly. Go on any post showcasing a car build and the comments will be 90% people who hate it and need you to know that they hate it and anyone who likes it by extension. Ask about any slightly unconventional mod for a car, and you'll get bombarded by angry messages from people saying you're ruining the car and therefore an idiot/monster. And that attitude inevitably spawns people saying "screw it, I'm gonna modify the car in a way that will make you mad on purpose just to make you mad," which is funny for 5 seconds until you realize fighting toxicity with toxicity only creates more toxicity...
I've been in the classic car world for several years and the attitude towards modding is so weird... if it's a hot rod/dragster/muscle car build, you can radically change the look of the car, cut fenders, do all kinds of stuff and people are generally cool with it. But put a widebody kit on it and suddenly you're a heretic and everyone hates you and screams "Y U RUIN CLASSIC!?" Or people get into stupid arguments about what kinds of classics you're allowed to like (four-door classic car owners know the pain).
And then there's the whole Muscle VS. Tuner wars, "I'd rather push an (x) than drive a (y)," and the worst of them all - the electric VS. gas debacle... I don't even like EVs but I feel sorry for all the EV guys who have to deal with the constant stream of hate and harassment from every keyboard warrior with a Mopar and opinions. I've seen EV owners get called slurs and other nasty names just for owning an EV, and even people saying they hope that person's EV bursts into flames with them in it, or leaves them stranded in the middle of nowhere, or bankrupts them with repair costs. NOBODY deserves that, NONE of that is okay, no matter how much you dislike someone's car.
And heaven help you if you're one of the poor souls who's trying to think rationally and take a reasonable stance of giving EVs a chance while still liking gas cars, as the hardcore gas people and hardcore EV people both now see you as the enemy. At least the EV people are just smug and annoying about their cars at worst, the way some internal combustion loyalists treat the EV crowd makes me ashamed to be an engine enthusiast sometimes, like... are we the bad guys? I don't want to be associated with them...
Competition, ego, attention seeking at all costs, trying to tear others down out of jealousy or to grab more attention for yourself... Why can't we all just see that at the end of the day we all like driving wheeled machines that go zoom and take us places? And that each of these machines has something different to offer, which is worth giving a chance? And that everyone's preference will be different, which is okay because there are many different wheeled zoomy machines and their diversity keeps the world vibrant? And most of all, that in these coming years more than ever, we can't keep dividing ourselves like this - we need unity in protecting all aspects of this hobby we collectively love. At the end of the day, these trivial differences are unimportant, they're just cars, and there are more important things in life than cars - but if you love cars, then you need to learn to love your fellow car enthusiasts so that the car community can stay strong instead of imploding under the weight of internal tension. A community divided against itself cannot stand.

Hey man First of all I want to say thank you for your time and feedback. This write up is amazing.
I do agree with you on the post Covid Hate and I think it stems from poor habits developed during covid when it pertains to the internet.
What do you drive currently? What type of classic cars are you into? It’s like people on the internet if you dont fit the typical image they will condemn you. For instance the iconic RWB Porsche 911 its undeniable and no one can say anything because its art and quite literally every build is just the same.
I see EVs in a much different light than most people we need them to validate our gas powered machines. It highlights virtually everything we know and love about cars and what we dont. EVs can be appreciated and respected but they dont have to be liked people hate change and I get that but change is good and some ways.
The ego struggle is something ive been trying to grasp but it has not been easy I think with the $500 billion dollar evaluation cars have become a business and one of the largest sectors to be honest.
It is what it is man I hope that people can all just appreciate that we all share a love for cars and it looks different from person to person and we respect it.

    • @Thinginator
      @Thinginator 7 месяцев назад +7

@@rayyankhan8726 Yeah it used to be most of the EV hate was out of fear that they were going to replace ICE entirely (which is still a big part of it, with half the haters calling them "government mandated battery cars"), but it's disgusting how that hate has been turned towards the owners themselves for "supporting" it, or acting like EVs are a huge scam/conspiracy and mocking the owners for "falling for it." Like, dude. For some people, EVs make MORE sense than gas cars, and I'm not gonna fault anyone for making an objective decision in that regard. A lot of people buy the car that works for them, that's all there is to it. Heck, even I've been eyeing the new Aptera EVs with solar panels and spaceship-like aerodynamics since 41 miles of solar-charged range per day would be perfect for me, and I like the design. But even if I were to just buy a dirt cheap used Nissan Leaf of something, I'd get swamped with mocking comments asking me if I had to trade my balls for it or whatever. The EV hate is insane.

@@TheOBDMafia I own two classic cars, a 1990 Miata (it's wild that 90s cars are classics now) and a 1966 Ford Thunderbird hardtop coupe. The '66 used to be my semi-daily driver until it got rear-ended last year, and I bought the Miata with the payout after insurance declared my T-bird a total loss. I did keep the Thunderbird though, as it's really not that bad - still tracks straight and drives properly, just has messed up bodywork in the back, which an experienced shop should be able to straighten out. Dumb insurance only cares about what parts are replaceable... but I digress. The Miata was another long-time attainable dream car, and I'm happy to say it's everything I hoped it would be. It's hilariously the polar opposite of my T-bird, but I love the differences between the two cars. They're both unique and fun in their own ways. Now I just have to save up for eventual Thunderbird repairs so I can get a rebuilt title and drive it again.

I never really understood people who can't learn to appreciate variety. They talk bad about cars that may have worse performance but fail to realize why maybe the car has better features in a different area. Maybe the guy wants it as a daily driver so he doesn't slap on so many expensive parts. It's just not something toxic people take into consideration. In my eyes, there's no such thing as a bad car as long as you drive it only on the weekend and you find it fun.

    • @TheOBDMafia
      @TheOBDMafia  7 месяцев назад +2

Variety is what helps us grow and helps the car community grow who would want to live in a world where we all drove teslas or hellcats or mustangs? Car are so so expensive and sometimes the price and the opportunity to buy that car is the only choice… there are so many variables. Just drive and enjoy the drive and built that connection and share it in a positive way. It really boils down to respect and some people lack that ability.

Yeah, that’s pretty infuriating I mean yes they’re both Subarus, but they’re not even the same car. Different transmissions, and different engines entirely. I respect people more when they’re very helpful in the community and they share their experiences and their lessons learned.

I think some people do have good intentions - I dumped $13,000 into my 07 wrx…. Only for 3rd gear to grenade after 6.5 years.
While it WAS fun while it lasted - if I could do it over again I would have gone Sti…..
So yeah there are jerks out there but there are people that actually understand the longterm value of the bigger investment of the Sti up front….
If I remember correctly - my 07 was $23,500 new in 07… the sti was $33,000 at that time…. $10,000 more for a better transmission brakes and differential….
      So I suppose it “depends”

He/she can spend countless hours learning and building his own car, but it’s all attributed to clout chasing? It’s just not fair, especially when it’s based off nothing concrete. I feel like a true enthusiast understands the car is a machine that should be driven, and if you’re destroying functionality to get a reaction from “haters” then it’s hard to see them as an actual car lover and not a clout chaser.

it's been toxic since day 1, any type of car stuff that developed even early in the 60s has always been toxic, but everyone knows that you do what you like and people judge respectfully, now comes the internet, where you don't see the car only at a meet, but you can hide behind a screen and say the most devious shit without any repercussion whatsoever. Like irl you'd be saying "hmm i don't like the wheels but it's cool" but on social media after seeing the 500th useless undriveable 1000hp 200k build you see a normal car some teenager still in school owns with maybe even cool mods, but you'll be so desensitized by it that you'll just comment "it's just an xxxxxx it's slow 🤡🤡". Like i can't make this shit up, no one lately in the online community seems to actually drive a car, nothing matters as much as any type of handling mods but you don't see anyone talking about anything like that, the only thing that matters is making 1000hp to go do pulls on the freeway entry (not on the freeway because they'll get too fast and the car for some reason doesn't handle as good). I can go on and on on this shit honestly, the community is changing and it's going to only get worse, but imo it will save itself when it'll go out of trend on tiktok and stuff like that, give it 5 to 10 years and we'll see who actually sticks lol

You've gotta build the car for you and you only.
Cars that are (or were) an icon, a class leader, are always targeted because they are seen as a high bar or standard to try to beat. Any icon captured in a point of time will be eventually dethroned as the rest of the market evolves over time. We can try to "build" cars to keep up in order to address how they may fall short of new competition, but unless you and your car and evolve radically with market evolution, you will lose over time. Then the haters come big time saying their ride is better than yours... but remember if you build it for yourself than it doesn't matter as long as you're enjoying it. Stay true to what you want - live that out!

    • @TheOBDMafia
      @TheOBDMafia  8 месяцев назад +2

100% many of these 90s icon jdm legends dont come with more than 250-300 hp and since they have aged that number has lowered. The reality is evolution is fast and things that were cool are not as cool. Years ago 500hp was god mode. But now if your car doesnt make 800-1000hp its considered slow. I think thats a diluted way of viewing cars we are not building spaceships to the moon.
Just build what you love and drive what you love and if people don’t like it send them the Bill🤙🏾

There’s a huge shift in attitudes at different car meets from what I’ve found. I used to host car shows some years ago and it was mostly classics. From my experience the older gens in the car scene are very down to earth and everyone can appreciate each other’s cars easily. I’m in college now and am finally getting to drive more but I’m not excited about going to meets as much. I think the toxic people in my generation just haven’t been around a wide range of cars long enough to truly appreciate everything. Amidst a pretty terrible time for the US and a loneliness epidemic this unreasonable level of hate is the last thing the car community needs. Or maybe it’s a result of those things.

I agree our generation is miss guided when it comes to cars and i do blame social media people say whatever and get aways with it and the perception of cars changed too. Modifying cars became mainstream back in 2008-2012. I want people to know this channel stand for the love a cars and the passion for engineering and having fun. Props to this video. I drive a 2009 Forester 5MT. There's a small SH community out there where I live and couldn't be more happier seeing another friendly face on the road. Who cares if other cars are faster? Many classics from the 80's, 90's are by no means fast by modern standards, yet it's these cars that will turn heads x10 more than a Tesla (No hate to Tesla ofc! Lol)People will see how much you care about your car just by how you take care of it and maintain it's longevity on the road! I've slowly grown immune towards what other people may think or say. When you say ego comes into play, I fully agree. Everything is expensive and we're too blessed and grateful to be given opportunities to drive these petrol vehicles. Who knows how long it may take until governments start limiting certain transportation methods? There are many factors as to why you choose to lean toward a certain manufacturer, ex., Subaru has always supported the ethos of community, adventure and fun performance off-road, and have never felt mean-spiritedness whenever in a car meet. There may be other manufacturers that may wield similar or better cars and idealogies fit for this job, but then you take into account costs, prices, availabilty, etc. Who gives af what other people say? They've never stepped a foot in your shoes, and have never experienced what you have. Good looks on your WRX!🔥🔥 Beautiful build on red paint btw.

So, I spent the morning helping my friend work on his engine swap. I realized that this might be the last time I help someone with their project as well. They tell me about what "so and so" built, and about "The stock bottom end record" that someone took a picture of.
-- "Built not bought" is stupid. You buy a car, then buy stuff from numerous vendors and bolt it all together. You didn't build a thing. That's called "Bought and assembled". It's not a bad thing, but don't try to be tough about it. The diesel side of things has been really bad about that, and it's negatively impacting our right to repair.
-- I didn't understand my love for cars until I got older and spent time in engineering industry. When we get our first car, it's so liberating. As we mature and develop our driving skills, we start to feel a lot of shortcomings on our cars that slow us down. That's where we start modding. I've been in engineering for 12 years now. It's my belief that most of us who actually like cars are people who deep down could have served in sciences but lived in a place that didn't enable it. When I was in high school, car culture was super frowned on because a lot of people in the area got killed in DWI crashes. In school, if you asked a car related question that applied the math lesson, they'd put you down and say "it's dangerous, you don't know that". I believe that many of us fall in this category.

I love cars, I have since before I could speak. Now I literally design toy cars. I've had an Abarth 500 for years that I absolutely love. Yes, it's just a tarted-up FIAT with 60% more horsepower and a straight pipe and a body kit. It's not "fast fast." I've never cared that it's impractical, weird, and slower than a lot of other sports cars. But other car people REALLY care about that. Speed and noise are not the only reasons to love cars. I'd drive a Model A coupe if I had the money for one. I like what you said about cars being like fashion styles - I love vintage and oddball cars, and despite the fact that I can name probably hundreds of vintage cars on sight, so many people in the car enthusiast community still look down on that as "less than" driving a Dodge Demon. I've learned that vintage car enthusiasts tend to be a lot more welcoming than sports car enthusiasts, so I tend to only really engage with them. And even that's rare. I think a lot of it is toxic masculinity and fragile egos, "my car has to be the fastest and loudest." I'm perfectly happy with my baby blue subcompact that's slowish and loud and weird, because it's also a joy to drive and makes me smile even just from walking past it.

Anything "too new" and even gatekept project cars or rat rods for not being good enough. And what we ended up with is a car culture that treats car brands and styles, LIKE sports teams. I also loved the volvo community I was a part of.

I really like and resonate with this video. I'm an older (45y/o dude) that is final at a point in his life to enjoy this wonderful passion and hobby. As a "new-to-me" owner of an 04STi who has spend WAY too much on my car, I can frankly say that today's car culture (Subaru specifically) is diminishing in quality and culture. It IS toxic especially when its mostly a marketing fest that is amplified by companies that simply want to make the most money off of us, through influencers, social media, etc.
I love my car and I love learning, modding; everything there is to know about it. I just wish I could meet like-minded, non-judgmental people that also have a passion and are genuinely curious and interested in what you've done to your car and what other plans you have cooking for it.
Unfortunately, I am too late and they "Hey-Day" of car culture died in the 90s...I don't know what we have today but its not a healthy nor a safe space to enjoy.

The Subaru community that I used to adore has changed massively and I agree diminishing in quality met some great people but Ive been some of the worst you can say that about all communities… at least that is what I m included to believe. All these companies are exploitative especially in our community..tons of money up for grabs.
Meeting like minded people ive met are not deeply imbedded in the car community although they are some of the biggest car nuts it ironic but it makes me believe the “Culture”… is for the people whom are posing as enthusiast rather than truly being interested in the machines. Car culture truly did die in the 90s and early 2000s too bad I was too young to enjoy it.
I hope you stick around. I started this channels to connect with people especially like yourself.

Its inserting a level of classism I find distasteful. Cars were always expensive, but with inflation and wages today car are entirely way to get to A to B. Pushing people to get cars that will put them in debt is not a good look. Nor is going into debt for a car period. Even getting a clunker grocery getter will just keep taking away from your wallet. Simply put its a rich mans hobby any one saying other wise is delusional or up to their eyeballs in debt.

I've loved cars since I was a child and dreamed of owning a WRX so last year, I finally bought one. The stars aligned and I took a chance- but I very quickly became a statistic. I brought the car home after a visceral first drive and parked it, going to bed that night feeling unstoppable and giddy. I couldn't sleep I was so amped. The next day I go to start it up, and smoke begins POURING from underneath the car. My heart broke. So many emotions ran through me. Guilt, regret, anger, hopelessness. I thought I seriously fucked up- and to make matters worse, just days before buying it I read a post about shitty Subaru owners and how important the vetting process was for buying a used WRX. I felt incredibly intimidated, especially considering the only maintenance I've ever done myself was fluid and oil changes, maybe a headlight here and there. It felt like the kid inside me died that day and a realization was born: shit was about to get real.
Fast forward to today, I've had the WRX for 9 months and have learned more than I ever thought I was capable of. Even the bad can turn out good.

Barley any shops near me will even consider aftermarket parts and if they do I'm paying 2-3x what the part cost for installation and the attention to detail isn't there. I agree, but I think it’s the mix of categories. For instance I clown on Subaru’s because they make such little power relative to money spent.
If they want power, I try to point them in a beneficial direction. If they don’t that’s fine, I just don’t respect slow cars because I get my joy out them (primarily) through performance.
So when I can’t share that kind of joy with them, it becomes really hard to relate.

    • @TheOBDMafia
      @TheOBDMafia  8 месяцев назад +3

Yeah the mix categories and types of cars is what makes the community great. Yeah to make power on Subaru’s is a ton of money of money because one its a 4cly and an unconventional one to say the least. Put it this way you need a virtually a whole new system and engine with forge internals just to make respectable power.
I think its unrealistic and to expect super high hp out of a subaru….unless you have deep pockets.
The word slow…. Is relative because its hard to beat a Miata in a togue in a mountains… just like is hard to beat a Demon or hellcat in a straight line. Some people like hp and tq some people like lightwieght and handling it really just boils down to what you want.
The joy we both can share is for the road we both love machines that bring us joy.
Id encourage driving a bunch of different cars and see how the otherside lives.

Some of the best parts of cars is the people BEHIND the wheel, because for most car lovers they’re car isn’t just a tool but also a canvas of sorts. But it’s so hard to ask for certain pointers and ask for advice on something because most of the car guys online are the toxic ones and they seem to just attract more toxicity and then people like me leave because they don’t want to go through that

It took a while, but I finally found a shop that I trust. The manager is a former rally driver who raced the ARA national championships for 15 years, and collects/restores rare Subarus. All the mechanics are highly vetted trained, typically straight out of a Subaru dealership. They pay a lot better than the dealership and it's a better environment, so for mechanics it's a win. They're super transparent, take tons of pictures for documentation and will work with you on any issue. I've even been on test drives with the mechanic who works on my car while trying to chase down an Intermittent issue. It does mean the labor is pretty expensive, but they don't gouge you on parts (I've compared invoice prices with online and it typically matches up).

I relate to the Auto Shop part because I don’t really trust a lot of them and don’t have a good relationship with any auto shops. I’m always scared someone is lying to me so I’ve been researching like there’s no tomorrow. Would anyone have any advice for someone like me who lacks knowledge to be able to service your car yourself? I can do small things like plugs, oil filter, etc. However I have that “uneasy feeling” because I have my new precious car for the first time ever and want to be able to make sure I’m keeping it reliable. People say I should purchase an air oil separator and it sounds like it’s a great buy for this car.

90% of the car community is just ego boasting and clout chasing. I’ve been literally called a POS so many times JUST because I drive a Miata. I’ve spent so much time and money on my car to prepare it for the track and I’ve completely lost interest in cars and gave up my dream to take my little car to the track. It seems nearly impossible to find any humble people in the community. I’ve tried different friend groups at meets and what not and all anyone enjoys is to walk around the meet and talk about how dumb everyone else’s cars are. Seems like the car society thrives on negativity. I’ve recently gotten into RC aviation about 3 years ago and it’s exactly what the car community should be. There’s all kinds of different pilots who fly different planes, fighter jets, civilian planes, airliners, etc. you name it. Just like how everyone drives and loves different types of cars. Yet everyone gets along and respects each others tastes. It’s one of the most welcoming communities I’ve ever seen. Thats why i stoped going to car meets... because i have a mooded Kia Soul and for some people thats "rice", "lame", etc... most people here in Portugal , its all about pose with Mercedes, Bmw's, Audi's, loaded diesel Seat's, old Hondas, etc... and plenty of them think because they have hid's or leds, a fart exhaust or roll more coal them a steam engine they're cool... and when i arrive with painted rims, blue and green lights interior, some decals, its all "rice", etc... since its outside the "norm"...
So yeah being a car entusiast is hard... since theres no respect today for diferent projects and its not all about being fast, but having a car mooded to you're liking also.
Another thing that ruins cars meets, its the toxic and exhibitionist mentality thinking the meets are displays of power and turning the street into race tracks, either for showing drifts or drags...
The good old days where people would simply stop the cars, apreciate them and simply coexist and talk to each other about they're project and mods...

@@TheOBDMafia thanks for the kind words.
In Europe Kia Soul's are rare since they're an oddball square car thats not a comercial one, other them that we have almost no other like that.
But being europe its all about the germans car thing unfortunally, not even the jdm's "survive" since they cant compete due to the lack of diesel sports versions or even any kind of interesthing cars, cause petrol is way, way expensive... 2 euros per liter... Mine its a 1.6 diesel reprogramed with 170hp, not a lot, but in europe most modern diesel cars are about 90 to 120hp.
Car meets in europe this days are to pretentious... people even show up with luxury and sporty rental cars just to make pose...
And due to the environmental measures, its almost impossible to have an older classic car since parts are scarse to find.
Covid bought out the idea that its the "end of the world", so go YOLO and do all kinds of stuff without thinking of the consequences and unfortunally that mentality got stuck around.

    • @TheOBDMafia
      @TheOBDMafia  7 месяцев назад +1

Yeah classic car are where its at for true driving feeling it fortunate here in the USA we have the ability to own them with less regulations but the parts are extremely hard as you mentioned.
Is Europe protecting diesels? Over here in the USA diesels are almost deregulated in states they have no emission for them where I live.
Yeah that YOLO mindset is stupid and not a good excuse Sounds like they are racking up the debt hoping to die before paying it off. Its always better to own the car outright than to pose with the banks car.

@@TheOBDMafia depends country to country within the EU.
For example on Portugal almost everything is forbidden, but its mostly a generic grey law, like "any modifications of the vehicle outside factory standards is ilegal...
Many people have they're cars with led's, reprogramed, etc... but as long they dont bother no one, the autoritys dont care much.
But we do have specific laws, like HID (xenon) aftermarket is ilegal if not using proper headlights, auto leveling beams and headlight washers...
Tyres/Rims cant be off the car body profile, they use a ruler to check it...
You cant tint the front windows and the back ones only to a certain degree and have to be branded material with specific homologations that are mandatory to be on the car registry in the "other notes" section, where is usually tyre measures.
Also all vehicles have a mandatory check up yearly to certify that its road worthy...
They check everything... lights, brakes, suspension, gases... even the horn and seats... you can get an yellow tag, warning, just from having a teared seat...
Thats why you rarely see a beaten car on the road in europe.
Yeah, people will use rentals, specially luxury and sports car to appear on car meets, theres companys that loan Ferraris just for a couple of hours.
Theres still classic cars, but its very hard to maintain due to fuel costs, lacks of parts and in certain capitals of europe traffic of old cars, to a certain year down, are forbidden due to ambient regulations in city centers.
Europe is all about the diesels... cause more fuel economy, lower fuel price and more torque.
The topography is wild here, narrow roads, hill'y areas and lots of curves.
Here the average engines for a diesel are 1600 to 2000cc with an average of 120hp, while the gasoline engines are between the 1000 and 1400 cc with the same hp.
While a diesel would to 6 liter per 100km, the gasoline, even with small turbo engine, does 8...9 liters and have have an higher fuel price.
But they arent unregulated... they have 3 anti pollution systems, the EGR, a valve that takes exhaust gases back to the intake for further burning... a diesel particle filter on the exhaust that once filled burns (regenerates) the bad particles and Adblue, a mix of piss and some chemichals, that is sprayed to help trap more dirt on the filter.
Yeah, but unfortunally people do a LOT of that here... they even buy a Mercedes or a BMW entry level cars that use other brands engines just to be cheaper (Mercedes A class with Renault diesel engine, and Bmw 1 Series with Peugeot diesel engine)... but hey... its a "premium" car... them use the money to buy alternative brands with fully loaded specs cars for same or below that price they payed.
Heres an example of a car meet, on a place where i used to go.
Also its not a portuguese channel, it was a brazilian youtuber visiting the car meet scene.

Love the video, I can tell by the way you speak you have a lot of experience in regard to cars. In regards to the car community, I think the people you will meet in real life do NOT even come close to the online community. People online are impulse, quick-thought commenters, who sometimes hide behind anonymity, and for some it definitely feels good to hate. But from my experience the kinds of meets you go to in real life will sort of determine the types of characters to show up. For instance think of takeovers; dangerous, ignorant drivers are the norm. I have been to numerous car events (obviously there will always be exceptions) where people just keep it cool, love the builds and enjoy others work and effort and just talk about cars in general peacefully, with enjoyment. If you are kept openminded you can enjoy any and all cars regardless of who made it and what was done to it. I don't stick to 1 brand, because i love CARS, the engineering, and the design. I love all eras, all styles of builds. And even for things I dislike, I know there's a place for them. for instance, I'm not particularly fond of the fast and furious styled body kits, but I can appreciate the early 2000's completed look, the effort it takes to even find old body kit parts, for instance. (although I cant lie I kind of don't get full on back to the future flying car camber lol it just destroys the car.) Also, I just bought a slow ass 2001 vw mk4 12v vr6 gti glx, and its my first car but super fun, and sounds amazing. I don't care that its barely got like 200hp lol, its a pos but its my pos.

Hey brother thank you for tuning and thank you for your time. I appreciate your comment and kindness. You are one of the reasons why I started this channel. We are a family and the OBD port is the crucial part of how we can communicate.
and read what our car is telling us. “ hence the OBD mafia”.
Very blessed to have you write this and it means so much. You took the words right out of my mind.
You bought an iconic car dont let any one tell you otherwise. GTis are one of the most underrated cars on the planet they are super analog and great to work on. The fact that you have the VR6 which is one of the best sounding engines its not quite a POS. Take care of that thing! If you boost it one day let me know.
Thank for your time brother 🫡

    Hello,
Yes, I will agree with you 100% , that the car culture sucks. Even though i,m into doing all kinds over overhauls on the old vintage vehicles I drive, they are not intended for the Sunday afternoon parade of old classic cars, they are everday vehicles, one is a 1979 Chevy g-10 van, the other in my late father's 1984 Oldsmobile BOTH vehicles have been modified with stainless steel seamlessly welded in in places where it rotted/rusted out. Especially my brake fluid lines , fittings and tubing totally stainless steel. My 1979 van I use when I do freelance electrical work. I,ve been a licensed electrician since 1972. I,m also a rail mass transit worker. I keep my old vehicles for survival along with being intermodal with mass transit and my pedal bike. We here in America have become addicted to new car driving. Today's vehicles are no longer a money pit, they are instead a credit card debit pit. It Really stems from the car maker's practicing what I call "PREDATORY ENGINEERING " in order to keep the average person in economic slavery. It makes auto techs/mechanics arrogant and miserable people that eventually throw in the towel and leave the business. A toxic environment to work in , because of that "PREDATORY ENGINEERING "of car making that is foisted on the auto tech. If car makers had any moral compass, they would make cars out of stainless steel, and have it,s drive train components readilly accessible with stainless steel hardware for easy change outs. This "PREDATORY ENGINEERING " began in the early 1930s when General Motors formed a front company called NATIONAL City Lines. The intent was to monopolize transportation in America,& Canada to get people out of efficient electric rail transportation and convert the lines to stinking and jolting buses, that nobody wanted to ride. That would set up putting the traveling public in cars only in which it grew into addiction behaviors. Also you be surprised at the hazardous waste being constantly emitted by a car just in tire dust alone. When tires where out where does all that tire dust goes? Not only you have climate change that is taking a toll on our planet but also the hazardous waste the car expells. Why do you think when you look at some of the deformities in frogs and other wildlife coming of age.
It,s one thing to be a car enthusiasts, it's even worse to be totally dependent on a car. PLEASE " GOOGLE NATIONAL CITY LINES " to get the rest of the story. I KNOW FOR A FACT THAT CAR MAKERS WILL FIGHT BACK AT THIS POSTING ALL THE MORE BECAUSE OF THEIR
Corporate greed like big oil , big pharma, and big banks, just look, at all the predatory new vehicle commercials in the main stream media. Trillions of dollars being spent to keep the transportation narrative for car use only.

Very very fascinating perspective. You brought up some very very big points thats no one is talking about. I do agree society is very very wasteful and whats even more wastful is the parts that we make cars out of none are easily recycled.
Additionally with transportation you seen this with Robert Moses back in NY and here in Atlanta with the Marta they do not wants “poor people to access transportation. The places that are affordable to live are dangerous neighborhoods around the city or way out where a car is needed because people refuse to let the train expand further north.
The amount of people that are paying above 5,6,7, or even 8 hundred dollars in car financing payments is insane . They are trying to suck the life out of the average consumer by brainwashing people to spend spend spend.
      Crazy world

Hey, man. First time on your channel. This video encompasses at least most of how I feel about cars, as (let's say) hobby. Definitely can be love/hate, at times. There are a few things contributing to the toxicity that is increasingly bothering be: gate keeping, elitism, purism. One thing that I personally find increasingly saddening is the shift away from "hot rodding." ...and I'm not talking about just classic muscle, here. I mean, any car that you personally modified to make it better, either objectively or subjectively. Seems like so many people just write big checks, these days. Then they go around bragging to everyone about this and that. Dropping $100k on a brand new sports car doesn't impress me. If you DIYed some coilovers, or brake kit, or even some esthetic mods, whatever the case, that's more impressive to me. Shoehorning an LS into an e30 BMW in your two car garage over 2 years... that impresses me. Spending $5k on a "fixer upper" and turning it into your own little expression of personality, that impresses me.
At any rate, I like this video. I'm going to check out more of your stuff.

Really appreciate your feedback. I agree, gatekeeping, elitism, and purism are killing the communities enthusiasm for sure. I think a lot the big car channels that build these cars give a false sense of car builds they just go with whats popular . I see that when one buys a car the other 3-4 buy that same car.
affirm has help bridge the gap between people now people just drop money they dont have on cars they dont own yet for clout.
I agree with you the restoration builds are the builds that are relatable and most impressive.
I appreciate you tuning in and sharing your thoughts thank you brother. 🫡

I drive an MX5-ND RF 2.0l manual and its 0-100 is at 6,8s (my tests light upwards road is 7s) thats not spectacular in mordern days where 4-5s isnt rare at all. but compare to a dodge of my frend with 400PS how can do 5-6s with luch controll automatik when i remeber right (how dont souns as good as my miata wit legal sport exaust) and it feels boring compare to my one. the reason is when you are sitting in a smal car the speed feels so much faster. as an exemple when you drive gokart at 75km/h you shit in your pens because its so fast big cars even boring when driveing 130km/h so where is the point? mustorbation in front of the Datasheet? i can drive on the German Autobahn but its stressful when you drive over 200km/h and its dangerous too.

I have talked alot of shit on peoples car on the internet. My daily is fast in a straight line, 2019 RS3 hybrid turbo, e85, 1000cc port injectors, blah blah blah no on really cares. But I only - ONLY will say anything when someone else is being an asshole. If you're just chilling and loving your car, that's awesome I love that for you. But if someone is out here talking shit on someone else's car - I will be the first to hop in to knock them off their high horse. I feel like it's people new-er in the car community who don't realize that there are always bigger fish in the sea from every manufacture. I realize that there are cars out there that will gap tf out of me and that's totally cool but it makes no sense to talk down on anyone else's build or manufacture unprovoked just because you have a faster car. I have and still do in some cases own M cars, Audi RS, AMG, American Muscle, 90s JDM, they all have their pros and cons and things that make them special. That's just something you learn from having experience and maturity in the car community

People spend boatloads of coin on...boats, but they then only spend a few weeks on it over the year. I'd rather have a car as a money sink when I'm going to be driving it every day around legions who have no idea how to drive. My WRX will be faster than 95% who share the road with me, likely out handle them too, and it'll be a daily symbol of my individuality. Buy a new PC every year? Nah, how about saving up for more mods, tools, or another car to transform.
Cars represent a constant source of problem solving, it's something to take care of, and it's a canvas for creativity. I'll keep opinions to myself concerning other drivers' decisions regarding their mods, but I'm not likely going to respect some of the decisions I see on the road.

I'm glad more people are talking about this. I got into the car scene around 2015, and I got out around 2017. It was just so lame. Everyone was an immature man child and almost no one knew much about cars or were even interested in the engineering of them. It was just about bags and wheels and maybe a tune and turbo upgrade. There wasn't a real community of people, it was just people became "friends" with whoever had the coolest cars. I quickly realized it was just about who had the most money to throw at a car, and no matter what you did 99% of people would have something negative to say about it.

    • @TheOBDMafia
      @TheOBDMafia  4 месяца назад

Exactly i think maturing is realizing the car community is toxic too as a teen you dont mind it but as time passes its you realize how dumb it really is a mean people are making millions off us and we just go into debt because we want to impress ourselves because people are never pleased. People dont care about cars the way think they do and thats fine but everyone is an expert these days. I mean someone said that anyone can build a single over head cam as if thats supposed to be insulting. We are not inventing anything we are simply modifying and playing with what already exists. People need to be humble man

Im a car enthusiast and my 9th gen si is bone stock for now. I actually enjoy it relatively stock just due to how this new wave of “enthusiasts” act with they’re modified cars. They ruin it for everyone. Ive never been one to go to car meets or events out of fear that it could turn into one of those infamous taakeovers you see on instagram. Im just sad at what the car community has become. I look at old carmeet vids from 2003 here on RUclips and everyone was just out to have fun and not cause mischief. Car prices for a 240sx or an integra for example were normal priced and not hyped up to a ridiculous amount because of the internet. Peoples builds were unique because it wasn’t copied a dime a dozen like they are now thanks to social media. But now a days, if your car isn’t making 1000+hp, its deemed slow. High hp and fastest 0-60 times have replaced just enjoying your car and having fun. And im afraid its at a point of no return

    • @TheOBDMafia
      @TheOBDMafia  4 месяца назад +2

Thats exactly where my mind is at currently. I see some positives but honestly I think it’s way too late. The car market does not make cars for us anymore and in the US its all trucks and SUVs. In a ideal world i see enthusiast cars being old JDM cars thats are way too expensive to buy and hard to find parts for and new enthusiast cars market up to oblivion and way to expensive for someone with a decent job to afford. I think the next 10-15 years will be the last ICEs we see and the last real “enthusiast” era we see. So enjoy your SI as much as you can brother. i appreciate your words and thanks for watching.

I have a 2013 turbo V6 mustang making over 450 to the wheels and a beater New Edge GT with the same stock 260 hp at the flywheel. I’ll let you guess which one gets way more hate by car guys, especially mustang guys. It was even worse when I had a 4.0 09 V6 mustang and that thing was still around as fast as a 2024 Civic Si, yet people hated on it and see a Civic Si as a true enthusiast car with nobody telling them they shouldve got a Type R instead.
The car community has always been lowkey trash, and I do it for me and my passion rather than to get recognition, that said i definitely also used to do similar hating, especially with the Honda Civic kids. I definitely let how ignorant some of their fans were effect my outlook on the cars before realizing i was making dumb generalizations and being a shithead myself

Honestly, I think it's largely you. I mean that you have probably changed as much as the car culture over the years. I will say that online communities have done nothing good for car 'culture'. It's mostly useless dribble, advertisements, personalities, hype clowns, etc. What's sad is people apparently value the current online car culture, given the popularity of many horrible youtube channels. As other people are suggesting in the comments, just stay off internet/online car groups, or at least be very selective. That goes for car meets too. Shows like Cars and Coffee attract what I consider to be the worst type of enthusiasts. I'm not saying I dislike/don't respect them, but they have different priorities (and that's okay!). Car culture is larger than it has ever been. There is plenty of diversity, including the type of car people you miss/want. Enjoyed the listen

You mentioned horrible youtube channel….what would you consider as horrible Im open to some feedback on that for this one. My goals is to build things I m interested in while building connections with people such as yourself.
I agree with the different priorities in car enthusiasts and thats okay like you said. The best thing I guess would be to try to find liked minded people and just stick close to them because as large as car culture is there always seems to be that guy you know? Or that group!

They arent fast nor high power but unreally dont care because back roads are so good to drive on and i trust the car will manage what i oush it through!
People at my worknalways say "why dont you just sell them all and get a decent car" because a "decent" car doenst give me joy like a clapped out hot hatch from my childhood dream. Great to hear from you from the UK 💪🏾 brother thats Awesome. Yeah we don’t get those in the states unfortunately but something comparable would be a Ford ST or fiesta ST which they stopped making or a VW GTi or Golf R a real enthusiast would appreciate a car like the VxR because its practical fun and quick. I mean we are not all able to afford fast super cars so we get what fits out lively hood.
I m 26 currently and I wish i could own more than just two cars but i have a family and thats worth the sacrifice as you know. People underestimate the situation we all have. Not everyone wants a car that cost a 60,000 Quid sometimes the cheaper beat up version or car brings us nostalgic feelings and brings us the most joy. Bought my first car 5 years ago and i dont see myself selling in a million years.

I have honestly compared cars to drugs. They can be dangerous and get you into a lot of trouble. But, you’re chasing a feeling. It can be very rewarding and meaningful. But, just like drugs it can be quite the slippery slope and before you know it that house payment is now going to a GT3RS.. lol.. but also, finally getting those wheels that fit perfectly will always be extremly satisfying. Finally getting a car tuned, what a feeling that is, and also driving the car after its first tune or getting some coilovers. Yes, anything you do to a car can be extremely expensive. But, car people don’t see it that way, it’s the same as any other hobby except it’s just more expensive and has more dangers to it. Which is also why it can be so difficult in this day and age too. We are all busy people and it almost seems like our dollar just keeps losing value, With that being said who knows where the car culture will lead to.. E-bikes? smh. Clout is seaped into our hobby as well, and it seems like now everyone has insta stickers on their window and car tiktok accounts. It is all quite silly but it’s really not that horrible. I also think brand loyalty is goofy. Seriously just go out and try a different car you’d be surprised how much you enjoy it. Every car I’ve had so far has been a different brand. I actually got my first German car 3 weeks ago and I honestly couldn’t even picture myself in it before I test drove it, now.. it’s been a blast so far. But, I feel like people should just stop looking for attention, and just enjoy cars with other people, it’s not about if your faster or which brand is better. It’s all about having a laugh and enjoying it.

We should be extremely grateful for what we have thus far who know we could really he driving Ebikes 🤦🏾‍♂️. The older I get the less interested I am in street cars. Recently I’ve been contemplating on exactly why I like cars. For me, it boils down to thrill. I like feeling g forces on my body, it’s fun. Similar to a rollecoaster, in a sense. Thus I’ve taken to karting and sim racing, and would love to eventually graduate in to sports car racing like spec Miata/e36. I’ve become less obsessed with “stunting” on the street, because frankly, no one but other car enthusiasts give a flying fuck, and like you state here most of them just hate. I’ve been seeking more personal enjoyment, meaning I want something fun to drive around, something that makes me feel emotion. It’s a complicated topic, but I think folks should take a step back and decide if their car enthusiasm lies within personal enjoyment or within the approval of others.

I know exactly how you feel man, within a hobby, there's a sport involved, where there's a sport, there's competition, with competition there's ego and pride, ...and with ego and pride there's the toxicity and drama and jealously in the mix, and it all go downhill from there.
The love of this hobby has been with me since day 1 for over 3 decades and that will never change, don't let other unhappiness or petty projecting question your goals or what you truly enjoyed. At the end of the day, we all have one thing in common, the love of machines. and you got an awesome wrx man.

I used to run a large group called ARC it was fantastic until one of the heads opened the door to more people…unfortunately the group fell apart and it stopped being about taking out the chairs and relaxing with good people and cars. It’s about who’s faster how many mods you have and how I’m faster your slower. So I left…the group kept going but not in a good way. Being an 86 owner I’ve noticed other 86 owners don’t want to know you if you don’t have all the mods for it. People tend to pick on you because I’m a cruiser and not a racer. Ffs you ain’t in fast and the furious you pay rent and have a normal job like most of us…take a chill pill. So I had enough of the car scene glad I did leave and I feel better and enjoy and love building my car alone…my advice stay out of the car scene and just love you car and build it and enjoy it and let people who appreciate it come to you and enjoy the praise from the people that like your car. You are right about easy to point out clowns ! People always feel the need to validate themselves by comparing and putting others down. So they spend more and trash other more because it justifies them going broke for clout
