    *Very well-made, stable, comfortable **enjoyable.fishing** recommend love that everything fits in bag. Easy to paddle for single person as well, however might be too heavy to carry by one.*

    I just finished an exact replica of your box. Like you stated this is a much better design and match for serious kayak anglers. Thank you for sharing and having the creativity to design such a box.
    Everyone should build this box. Works great and lots of fun to work on. I should mention that after everything is purchased it is not cheap. If you are wanting a $20 battery box this is not your box.

      That's awesome! I'm glad it worked out for you. You're right, it's not cheap, but it will last much longer than anything else. Thanks for the comment!

    This is best from what I seen so far, thank you! I plan to build bigger one, for Group 27 sized LiFePO4 battery to be used with FastTrack inflatable, and after seeing this I am very much sure that much bigger than battery box it way to go; Pelican 1440 costs CAD $265 here, compare with battery cost CAD$ 1500... and buoyancy of 1440 is 43kg!!! (my battery is 13kg). I was thinking about $80 for MTM SPUD7 (almost tight fit) vs. $265 Pelican 1440 (spacious!!!)
    Thanks for sharing!

    Nice idea, I have the same box, and was using it for some camera gear when I go fly my paramotor. It became too small, so I don't have a use for it. Now I'm getting a camper, and may be out and about away from power for some time, so I've been looking at battery boxes and building my own with full size batteries for the camper. I figure I'll make a small one for my little Pelican box to charge all my gadgets.

    Properly maintained, these SLA batteries will last a LONG time. You often hear they are good for about three years, but mine have lasted eight years so far. I keep them on a Battery Tender Junior. When my landlord removed two, two year old SLA's from the fire panel I salvaged them and they charge right up to 13.2 volts and hold that charge. I keep a group of six of them and rotate the Battery Tender Junior clips to a new battery each morning. So each one gets 24 hours of charge every sixth day. Absent the routine charging I'm sure they would crap out in short order.

    Use Velcro on your battery & battery tender, it stabilizes both & easy to change out! Shalom!

    Nice project with a real rugged Pelican case unlike many of the other crappy cases for these projects. Why is everyone so secretive on not showing the actual batteries used in these project videos. When researching people want to see the side of the battery with its model AH rating and how it positioned in your case so we can build on our own designs...

    Hi Derek, great job! I was wondering what (brand, type, size) battery you used... I didn't see that in any of the comments. I would be using that case to power a 55lb thrust 12 volt trolling motor on a canoe. Thanks!

    • @derekdickey8965
      @derekdickey8965  7 лет назад

      You would probably have to buy a very large case to house a marine 12v deep cycle battery. The one I used was only like a 7amp 12v to power some LED lights and the fish finder. Hope this helps. Thanks.

  • @fredfable5655
    @fredfable5655 7 лет назад

    Really excellent!!
    i was thinking on that solution years ago. In a bigger box, where I can store the fishfinder also.easy removing to use and attachable on the top of the box with a big velcro patch.
    My plan was to go freely across the brakes at the beach and if tip off no suffering because everything still protected in a case.
    Good job buddy!!!
    Is water tight? have you tested? does it float?
    Fred.

    • @derekdickey8965
      @derekdickey8965  7 лет назад +1

      Thanks for the comment. Yeah, I would probably put my fish finder in the box too if I were going across waves and possibly tipping. You could probably install the mount for the fish finder directly on the top, that way you just plug and play. To the best of my knowledge it is watertight...I never testing it for floating but I've had some serious amounts of water get in the bottom of my kayak and everything was still good.

    How many inline fuses did you use? And what amp fuses?

  • @edawolf3000
    @edawolf3000 8 лет назад

    Looks good but it would have been nice if you explained how you wired it. Everything is covered and not easy to figure out for those who don't understand how this all works. Do you have a fuse?

    • @derekdickey8965
      @derekdickey8965  8 лет назад +1

      +edawolf3000 Thank you for the comment. The wiring is pretty simple as everything is directly connected to the battery. I cut off the male end of the on-board charger and connected it to the Marinco Charger Inlet. I then cut off the charger alligator clamps and soldered the wires to the battery. The MinnKota Plug and 12V dash socket and chained together have the in-line fuse on the positive line coming from the battery. The negative line of those two ports goes directly to the battery. Check out the closeup shot at 3:30. That's pretty much all there is to it other than wire management and solder. Hope this helps!

    any videos on how to chain wires from one to another ...or is it simply each plug gets it own red and its own black ...and these wires then all go back to the battery ...trouble is then id have 6 separate wires 3 red and 3 blacks all meeting at the single battery terminals ....?...so obviously this is not way I need fuse on each red wire ...sorry im a bit thick thanks rob

      It's an inline 15amp fuse. Picked it up at autozone I believe.

    • @barntt
      @barntt 8 лет назад +1

      Safety First! Be sure to include the fuse in the descriptions. It should be considered the MOST important item in the whole build. May I also make a suggestion that a catastrophic fuse at the positive post of the battery be added to prevent a fire if a short or overload were to happen! Or relocate the fuse in there to the positive post. There is enough wires in there to create havoc if a short or overload were to happen! IMHO! Nice Build! Safety First!

    • @derekdickey8965
      @derekdickey8965  7 лет назад

      I used the screws that came with the connectors for the top lid and for the inside I used marine grade epoxy. I used epoxy because I did not want to compromise the case's water integrity.

    • @derekdickey8965
      @derekdickey8965  9 лет назад

      +robert boardman Hi Robert, the wire is 12AWG and you can find it at any hardware or car parts store. At 3:34 you can see the red wire coming from the battery on the left, it then goes into the plug in the middle, then another red wire comes out of the middle plug and into the plug on the right. This is repeated wire the black wire as well. Hope this helps!

    Will this power a trolling motor, if so, how big,how long?

    • @bigswedefishing2028
      @bigswedefishing2028 7 лет назад

      Depends on the size (amp hours) of the battery and the current draw and voltage requirements of the trolling motor. You can apply the concept to any setup, but might need a bigger battery and box (and check to make sure the other components are appropriate for the current; boat fires are bad news bears).

    looks exactly what I want but how do you get the power cable from fishfinder garmin 500c into a plug type socket all I have is a v thin red wire and black wire that I connect to battery ie crimp clips and no fuse ....I want the fuse box you have etc etc ....sorry I do find this complex rob from uk

    • @derekdickey8965
      @derekdickey8965  9 лет назад

      +robert boardman No worries. The thin red and black wire coming from your fish finder will go into the male end of the MinnKota MKR-18 12V Plug & Receptacle kit. The plug has 3 prongs but you will only hook up the red and black wires to two of those prongs. You will then connect the 12AWG red (+) and black (-) wires from the battery into the female MinnKota receptacle on the lid of the box. Let me know if you still have questions. Thanks for watching.

    thanks v much what drill bit or thingy do I use to make the holes in the box ....ive got the box and don't want to ruin it ...ive measured the diameter as around 25mm so I guess that's the size but should I use a toothed round cutter ?how did you decide where to place plugs ?...is top better than sides ?thanks again rob

    • @derekdickey8965
      @derekdickey8965  9 лет назад

      +robert boardman I chose the top because it didn't affect the structural integrity or waterproof capabilities of the bottom portion. Basically, if water ever seeped into the bottom of the kayak, I have a good 4-5 inches before it would overflow and reach the top of the box. Much like the hull of a boat (or kayak), the more holes, accessories, etc mounted on the side, the greater chance for leaking. I also used hole saws of various sizes to cut the holes on the top of the box.

      I’m in sales and those are called filler words and it’s only a nervous tick. It’s okay! The easiest way to cut those out is to slow down your speech. Also watch your paraverbals too. (The way you pronounce words) The best public speakers can be super nervous but they cut out filler words and have the pitch of their voice go down at the end their sentences and this oozes confidence and gives a “matter of fact” tone instead of a “questioning” or “unsure” tone. Just trading knowledge here. I LOVE the battery box and it gave me tons of ideas for my own. Thanks so much. God bless you brother.
