I'd like to think the slow animations are because the one developer wants to see his animations thru and be sure they're all set before speeding it up.
I think a big part of that is the particle effects and timing from starting an attack to hitting. A trick that other games use to give that sense of impact is to speed up the overall animation, and slow it down when you hit something. That bit of 'hit lag' is what makes Smash Brothers have that satisfying weight to it. Because currently its a bit floaty, which is good for the air combat but not the best for grounded attacks. Though even just adding a knock back animation to defeated enemies before they disappear will give that extra umph to finishers.
It's cool how much they've managed to nail the KH feeling, but I do hope that they are able to stand out in their own way by the time it's released. I want to see how people can evolve the formula, rather than just imitate. My biggest hope out of this is that they play around with the ability system a bit. the numbered KH games can very quickly turn into equipping every ability you can, because you can. I hope that we get more unique abilites that would actually force us to think about what we want equipped, and even experiment with some combo modifies that feel different. I really just want this game to actually have the RPG feeling that some KH games lack.
This looks really promising, and I'm glad to hear that the in person reception has been positive. Can't wait to see how it develops further. P.S. To everyone commenting on the slow attack animations. He did say that he is only half way through Pre-production. So, there is still plenty of time to make adjustments. Let the man cook!

That Agrabah esque world just makes me wish KH2 Agrabah took place at night time to feel closer to Return of Jafar (or just the night time scenes of the movie in general) lol, would have made that revisit more worth it

The game has a lot of potential, even though I think it might need to differentiate a bit more from Kingdom Hearts to have a future. Also, what a great game name logo, it even has the title of the game in Arabic next to the moon. Very clever.

Fun fact, Nomura originally wanted platforming in Kingdom Hearts 2, he also wanted all the Organization XIII members to be bosses in the Olympus Coliseum. But due to time constraints, it never happened....until Kingdom Hearts 2 Final Mix was created. During the development, he had a second chance to use his scrapped ideas. He wanted to include the Organization XIII bosses. But instead of putting them in the Olympus Coliseum, he decided to create a whole new area to explore to access the bosses. That being, Cavern of Remembrance. Even Nomura realized the lack of platforming and puzzle solving in the original Kingdom Hearts 2. There were even a few platforming and puzzle solving in 358/2 Days, and even in Re:Coded. They weren't as good as in Kingdom Hearts 1 & 2. But the platforming and puzzle solving were there.
1:37 Oh, this guy’s favorite world is definitely Agrabah lol. It’s crazy how much this guy had to have obsessively studied KH because very bit of this feels like KH1. Everything you mentioned, but even the speed of combat animations and the enemies riding that perfect line of whimsical and threatening. Even the soft, yellow lighting reminds me of Traverse Town. I never realized until now just how much even the tiniest details of KH have stuck with me over the years… I should play it again sometime
Dunno if anyone will see this(Certainly hope the creator will), but the game is looking pretty nice! One point of issue I have is that those animations look like he's heaving a blade much heavier than the one he's holding appears to be. Would look better if the animation were faster, or maybe just snapped forward at the end rather than a linear speed.
I've tried the early build myself. I want to get around to making a video to provide feedback sometime in the future, but don't have the necessary supplies yet.

The fact that this game is very inspired by Kingdom Hearts is great especially since we all wait for KH4. I also have Prince of Persia vibes from this project
i've been following the development of this game semi-closely for a while now and man it has me excited!!! it being a solo dev project probably means it's a far distance from being finished but let me tell you, copying the game feel of Kingdom hearts is no easy feat and this guy, based on the footage alone has managed to NAIL it!
There's actually a really good Heartslike called "What if Adventure Time was a 3D Anime" made by Mike Inel. Being a fan-game, it is rather short, but plays exceptionally well, and has a very nice difficulty curve. Worth pointing out, it's got NSFW content on it, but it can be played while blocking all of it. Certainly not a reason to not give it a try.
I would absolutely love a Heartslike game where you still visit different types of locations, as he attempted with the “realms,” because I definitely am a sucker for sea and sky settings like Destiny Islands and would love to spend more time in places like it.
I really hope that now that the kids who grew up with KH and are getting into game dev will allow a "hearts-like" genre to become a more common thing cause i've always wanted more games with a similar feel
The artstyle in its current form gives me a KH meets Sonic Unleashed feel if that makes sense, specifically how the Shamar Werehog levels looked since they’re both inspired by Arabian culture. Even the Djins you fight in the demo remind me of the Gaia minions a bit

Seriously though, the combat seems about as slow as KH1 Sora which is fine, though I personally would have preferred more of a KH2 feel but that's just subjective personal preference, of course this could change as you get more combat abilities, it certainly did in KH2. This really does look great.

As someone who is not a fan of Kingdom Hearts but genuinely loves the combat & exploration, I am genuinely excited to see HeartsLike becoming a reality.
A main character with a scimitar doing parkour across the middle east also kinda reminds of Prince of Persia. Replacing the Heartless with Djinn is actually pretty genius*, because you dive into the mythological aspects of them in both Islam and pre Islamic paganism, they can be quite diverse. *Did you see what I did there? Genius, Djinni? 😜
If you think about it , a lot of today's jrpgs take inspiration from Kingdom hearts. There's tons of jrpgs that use the combat system that kingdom hearts has had since it's inception and even final fantasy now is more like kingdom hearts than final fantasy. Really makes you think how far , far ahead Kingdom hearts 1 was ( still my favourite in the series )

I find it funny that there's all these games coming out with heavy influences from other games and then they get shit on for being "rip-offs" examples being Palword or Enchanted Portals being rip-offs of pokémon and Cuphead respectively. And then here comes luminous nights being praised when it's literally kingdom hearts without disney or keys IM NOT COMPLAINING. I just find it interesting that since there actually seems to actually be heart in this and the fact that kingdom hearts is pretty specific style and there are almost no games like it, people are completely chill with it and fine it fine. I'm super excited to see how this game comes out, though I am pretty concerned on what Square Enix might do if it gets too popular. Like Bomb Rush Cyberfunk feels so different from Jet Set Radio, but this is LITERALLY kingdom hearts with a pallet swap.
I feel like the combat is a bit more kh1 vs 2. Its a bit more like slower in terms of feel and swing speed. Personally im more a fan of kh2 combat, but other than that. Its looks great.

Greek is possible, Norse not so much since there is no world with that mythology.
