    Hi Mattias, thanks for this. These used Canon ultra-sharp teles are an amazing bargain because they are MUCH more versatile than you'd think - "Oh, a single focal length, too bad!" I have the Canon 135mm F/2 which gives me incredibly croppable pictures. I know of a full-time pro who bought a 5DS and the 135 because his clients often demand unusual croppings or want to be able to crop tight into an existing photo, and the 50 mpx sensor more than does the job. The 135 gives me effectively a 300-400mm F/2 lens for shooting performers and candids at events. With today's sensors I can easily shoot at 1/500 and faster for nice-looking, razor-sharp photos with stage lighting, and they look great when cropped tightly. A 70-200/2.8? Not even tempted.

    • @Ulalayumyum

      @@Ulalayumyum Lots of wedding photographers use the 135 for just that reason. It's wonderful for events - much less conspicuous and unwieldy than the big teles.

    Nice snappy upbeat video. Great little explanation on the rational of why a 28&85mm or a 35&100mm work well together. 👍
    You have several "pairs" of lenses listed (got those bases covered). What would you list for "triples"? i.e. a set of 3 primes, 3 cheap zooms, or a combo that punch above their weight in the used market?

    I was just searching for a cheap sony body for experimenting for ir photography and noticed that the Sony NEX 5N can sometimes be found for around 50-60€ (at least in Germany). Since I know you like bang for the buck I thought I might as well mention it.
    Also you were the one that really got me into photography with your Pentax Q video and your vintage lens videos. Thank you very much for that, it really gave me something to do outside and since I'm somewhat a introvert it really helped me to not feel out of place when going out.

      Macro lenses have a tendency to be slower.

    • @MB-tp8ne
      @MB-tp8ne 4 года назад

      @@gearreallydoesntmatter &daarshg : I own both lenses, and are often under pressure to decide which one I should take with me.
      If you do not need close/macro the EF 2.0 100 has four strong advantages: 1 stop wider aperture (light, bokeh), very fast AF, small size and more crispness in images at least at f/4 (subtle difference)
      My dream lens is an f/2 100mm 1:1 macro but I am prepared to see that coming in at 1kg, maybe an RF version might be a little bit lighter. But I would presumably keep the EF 2.0 100 because of its tiny (in comparison) size!
      And it always remembers me at the photokina 1990 or 1991 when I had seen this tiny lens with my favorite focal length. I decided that it would be cool to have 25mm - 50mm - 100mm macro - 200mm - 400mm lenses.
      Now Canon has disturbed that scheme with a sensational offer of EOS RP with the RF35 macro which is a great combo and as you, Mattias, said: 35 + 100mm is a very good two focal length setup except that I have to decide which 100mm I will have with me :)

    I paid less than $170 for mine, and it is very good. I am curious how it compares to the slightly older Minolta AF 100mm F2 which for some reason is valued higher. It is better than my Minolta AF 100mm F2.8 RS for non-macro use. Yongnuo has an inexpensive clone of it.

    Mattias, how are you? i'm thinking of buying a 100mmf2, i use mostly prime lenses to work and from the focal length it looks like a great option (bangs for the bucks).. my doubt is: Can i mount a canon teleconverter on it? I work a lot with shows, theaters. I was robbed last year and given the pandemic scenario, to save some money, recently I bought a cheap 6D with 9k clicks, brand new rs, very good deal. It worked competently with the 85 USM, but like the 100, there's vignetting when you're not wide open. I wouldn't bother with zooms unless you want to crop, but I would say it works competently to very well with several "mainstream" primes. I don't know how it compares to the others, but I'd say it's a good choice.
