It's now 2020 and I just shot some images today with the Canon 100mm f2 on the A7rii. The results were outstanding. The bokeh is wonderful and the edge to edge sharpness at f8 is perfect. I've tested this against the 100mm 2.8 IS macro and the f2 has better edge sharpness and less CA. Very impressive.
Hello there! I don't know if you can compare it or not, but would you recommend this over a Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX OS Macro? It would be my first tele prime, and I would use it on an EOS RP for street stuff, because I saw, from 100mm you are able to "blend in and spy" a little bit. I know it is an old video, but this Canon doesn't seem like all that great, feels like a little bit soft in the focused area. The also aged Sigma seems to be a bit sharper, BUT, I am worrying about the AF performance even with restricted focus :(
Linus Wärn this reviewer has at least 10 shots of that door for every camera lens he has reviewed. Especially in the case of zoom lenses where he will have shots across the focal range, different apertures and on full frame and aps-c. There's also lenses like the powerzoom lens he covered where he just had to take a tonne of shots and hope for the best focus as there was no manual focus ring.
The 100mm is best for portrait photography regardless. The 85mm forces you to get to close , lens to subject working distance is a problem for me. As well as the 135mm is to long for portait and to short for telephoto I consider this as a sales pitch lens. The 135mm in studio requires alot of room for lens to subject working distance . This 100mm is my go to portrait lens.
Bought a used one today for 80$, now i feel lucky :) yes it is better than the ef 85mm f1.8 and as sharp as the RF 85mm f2 and the ef 100mm f2.8 macro usm. focuses better and more accurate than the ef 85mm and 100mm macro and is faster at it than both. the RF 85mm has something that the ef 100mm f2 usm has not and it's 1:2 macro capabilities. i found tonight what the ef 100mm f2 usm has over the RF 85mm and it's character. the depth of the image is not the same and i think the EF 100mm f2 is f1.8 in reality. at all stops is brighter than the rf 85mm. keeping both and my new portrait lens will be the EF 100mm f2 from now on :)
I once saw a photographer saying that focal distance divided by the aperture is the background blur value of a lens. So the 85mm divided by 1.8 would have 47,7 and the 100mm divided by 2.0 would have 50 as this value, giving the 100mm less than 5% more background blur. I don't know if those numbers are accurate, but they certainly seem to work in general.
It seems to me that at f2, the 100mm f2 is sharper than the 135mm f2 in your picture tests. DxoMark, if that means anything, seems to regard the 100mm quite highly on a 6D. The compression you get from the 135mm is a different beast altogether, but I wonder if that compression is worth $500 more... thank you for your review.
How does this compare with Samyang RF/EF 85mm f/1.4 AF or Samyang 135mm f/2 MF lenses? Only mentioning these as other 'budget' portrait options for Canon EOS RP/P/R5/R6 users
Here's my review. It takes good 'Apparent pictures' once you zoom in, there are firngings and you've always missed focus. The focus hunts like crazy. Almost never gets nailed. I got mine for $100 and played around it with events. For professional events I will need to get this Canon lens because I love the results. Just hate the slow and hunting focus and the image sharpness
Nice one great videos just watched this and the review on the 85 mm as well and although I’ve been looking at the pricier 100mm 2.8L macro I’m tempted to go for this with it being half the price of the L version with great sharpness and better colour fringing than on the 85mm
I've had this gorgeous lens for about a week. I am very happy with its quality and price. Can anyone tell me if there is a big difference in terms of image quality between the Canon ef 100mm f2 usm and the Canon ef 135mm L f2 usm? Dxomark tells me that the Canon ef 100mm ef f2 has a higher score. I would like to know from your practice, what do you think? Are there big differences or not? Other than focal length. I only care about the image quality. Many thanks for this video, Chris and everyone who will answer my question here.

Hi Christopher, Your reviews are very technical and precise. Thank you for your work. I'm currently thinking about buying the Canon 28-300. What is your point of view on this lens? Do you think it is worth the price? It would be great to have your point of view. Regards. Rémy.
Hi there Chris, great review, thx! If you have some time for an opinion...say I have the Sigma Art 50mm (to save weight when needed) already and I also have Sigma 50-100mm for my aps-c...if you were choosing today, would you keep the Sigma 50-100 which is already wonderful or would you trade them in for the USM 85mm & 100mm combo instead to go along with the 50mm? Thx a bunch!
Here's my review. It takes good 'Apparent pictures' once you zoom in, there are firngings and you've always missed focus. The focus hunts like crazy. Almost never gets nailed. I have the 24-105mm L on my 60D and I love it. Although I would admit that I find 24mm quite long for general use. If I where you, I wouldn't bother getting the non L version, because it is quite an awkward range, and you're not getting the advantage of weather-sealing or better buildquality like you get with the L.
I've just bought this lens for my aps-c canon, it is a great lens, but it becomes a 160mm lens when you use it with your aps-c, so think wisely before buying it.
Hi Christopher, in you opinion wich one you choose between this lens and Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 macro? checking only about the picture quality for portrait?
As the Northrups have pointed out recently, one must remember to take into account that the f-stop number also has to be multiplied by the crop-factor when used on an APS-C body. This lens does not give you the equivalent of f2 @ 160mm on a 1.6x crop lens. It gives you the equivalent of f3.2 @ 160mm. This is because the sensor is smaller, and each pixel therefore collects that much less light compared to FF.
***** There is as much a reason to point out the equivalent difference in f-stops as there is is to point out the equivalent difference in focal length. Christopher only mentioned the focal length difference. That's why I wrote what I wrote.
So nice to meet you Snuffy :) Are you going to test new Samyang 20 1.8 lens? I love Samyang lenses indeed and I can't wait to watch your review! Especially in relation to Sigma 20 1.4 (incl. coma and these "stars" things)...[not to mention premium 14 2.4]
Your reviews are really good, thanks for making them! It would be great to see a review of the Canon EF 28mm f/2.8 IS USM, and to compare it to the Sigma 30mm F1.4 DC 'Art'
Christopher, Thank you for your videos - always very informative. I have been weighing the 100mm f/2 vs the 135mm f/2. I currently shoot on a Canon 7D crop. I need the lens mainly for low light indoor sports - particularly swimming. The 135mm seems like the best lens (and twice the cost), but I am afraid on the crop it will be too long. My other option is the Tamron 70-200mm VC 2.8 - but trying it out it seems so heavy and bulky compared to my usual primes, plus I would lose some aperture. What do you think? Thanks
+jesslash For shooting sports, most the time you want to err on the side of the longer focal length, for perspective reasons, so I'd go for the 135 :-)
Thanks for the quick response Christopher - the 135 even with a crop sensor? The internet is great, but it can also be dangerous. There are a lot of opinions out there and many think the 135 is "too long" on a crop for indoors. But it does look like a beautiful lens.
I have the 135 F/2L on a full frame camera. It's an amazing lens, however, even on a full frame camera it's a lot longer than you'd think. Even going from 100mm to 135mm, that extra 35mm makes a huge difference. On full frame it's very difficult to use in my house. Unless I just want a headshot. I can use it for animals though in the house. On a crop camera it would be way too long. If I had a crop camera I'd look into those Sigma 1.8 zoom lenses that just came out.
Here's my review on the YN100mm F2 since so many people ask.
I wanna set up a 2 FF body kit, one with a 40stm and the other with either 85mm or 100mm f2 usm. What do you guys recommend? They're about the same price used.
@@christopherfrost thanks for the reply. However, I had a steal on a pristine sigma art 135mm. The lens performs great for action & is seriously sharp, fantastic buy with unique looking shots
Thanks again for the great review! So informative :) I am seriously considering to buy this lens, however I am still a little unsure weather this is the right focal lenght for me. I would mainly be taking portraits with it, both of pets and people. Since you have tested it on an aps-c camera, how far do you have to back away from your subject with the effective 160 mm focal length? (I will be using it mostly outdoors, but still I'd like to know)
Yep, saw that one, bought that lens based on your review. AF is glitchy on video mode on an 80D. With that exception and the the dying R2D2 noise of the focus motor, it is flawless.
I love your videos, I don't even bother looking at any other people's reviews because yours is quick and easy and very systematic. I also caught your subliminal message! @ 5:56 haha nice!
Thanks. I found it. I Really like your through examination of all the lens's characteristics. The fact you do reviews of lenses on 35mm film cameras, full frame (35mm film equivalent) sensor cameras, and their apsc size brethren is also most appreciated. Also I am Sorry about the mistake of posting on multiple videos. Have a great day.
My canon 85 worked with it so probably the 100mm I'm getting will too. However, some have said that they haven't gotten it, so I don't know if I just stumbled on some settings in my camera that made it work or not.
Now that I've had the Canon 100 f2 on my Sony A7rii with the MC-11 adapter, it has worked wonderfully. The portraits really have a wonderful bokeh and professional look to them.
I had one for about two days. Had a terrible time with manual focusing and the AF wasn't always that great...now enjoying my Canon 100 F2 and it's great.
Why is an APS-C sensor "a more punishing sensor" than a full frame sensor? is that intrinsic to crop sensors generally, or something to do with the 70D compared to the 6D?
hi there how is this lens with 70D to take portrait pics.Does f-stop it multiply 2 x 1.6 on aps-c cuz i search for bokeh lens i dont know for 70-200mm cuz on my aps-c.
It's extremely difficult for me to read your question. If you need to see how this lens performs on an APS-C camera, then watch this video and you'll see
sorry am not from uk/usa big sorry. my question is that on APS-C do we change F-stop to the crop cuz i hear that people have bad bokeh on this sensor so they crop f stop and get what there camera will perform. Soo i think 50mm f1.4 would be 80mm and f stop 2,24 will act as 2,24f... is this true test pls bokeh on 70d with some good lens made for FF
ToraKo Ok. The amount of light that the lens lets in is the same. An f/1.4 lens will always let in an f/1.4 amount of light. But, on APS-C, the depth of field, or how blurry the out of focus backgrounds will be, is more than halved. You increase the depth of field by about 6O%. So, the depth of field potential of an f/1.4 lens on APS-C is about f/2.2. An f/2 lens will be about f/3, and an f/2.8 lens will be about f/4.5
thm hbk Well, f2.8 is nice for indoors during the day, and it's flexible with that zoom range. However, if you want only portraits and wedding photos, then perhaps something like the Canon 135mm f2 would be better (I'm assuming you have Canon). It's cheaper, faster, and has super quick auto-focus. The longer focal length also gives lots of blurry background. No, image stabilisation, though. I have the tamron 24-70, and I have a wedding coming up, but I'm not going to use that lens unless I want a wide-shot. You need something fast, and 2.8 is right at the edge of being too slow for indoor photos in the evening. Especially if you have a crop sensor body.
***** good point but i need something fast zoom with is and not very expensive also i need it in video work overall i need a lens that it can be for most uses but mostly in wedding and portrait maybe the tamron is the best choice right ?? do you feeling comfortable with it ?? thanks for your reply :)
thm hbk Well, for video work having image stabilisation is almost a must, unless you use tripod exclusively. If you need inexpensive zoom (I don't consider the tamron to be inexpensive, exactly), then it might be a good choice. Have you considered the tamron 70-200mm f2.8? Also great value for money. For portraits you don't need anything wider than ca. 50mm anyway (because of unattractive face distortion), so if you want a zoom lens for portraits, then 70-200 is a better area, maybe. I really like the 24-70, since you ask. It's a nice, solid lens that is fun to use. It's great as a walk-around lens. The image stabilisation easily allows you to take crisp pictures down to 1/20 of a second. It's the lens I *always* bring with me. It also sports a t-stop value which is pretty much identical to the f-stop value, which is rare.
Best lens reviews on RUclips, period.
agreed

When it comes to DSLR I only trust Chris. He’s been around for years.
Another great review Chris. I don't even own a Canon DSLR anymore (recently switched to Sony) but still enjoy watching your reviews, keep them coming!
Nice job you are doing .. I always watch you reviews before buy a new (used) lens
Great review. I really like this lens on my 7D. Super sharp, great in low light, and acts like a compact telephoto
Solid review. I just picked this lens up for DIRT cheap and after cleaning a lot of dust off of it, I am ready to go do some shooting.
The new Samyang 135mm f2 review would be great.

Hi Christopher, in you opinion wich one you choose between this lens and Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 macro? checking only about the picture quality for portrait?
Unless you want to do macro work, the 100mm f/2 is a bit nicer
thank's a lot!
I've read that yong nuo has released a 100mm f2 lens..i hope you'll make a comparison video between that and this lens.
please do a review on the yongnuo's dirt cheap version! I curious how it performs. awesome review anyways!
I'll be looking at the 85mm version of the lens as soon as I can
Christopher Frost Photography cant wait for that!
*****
There is as much a reason to point out the equivalent difference in f-stops as there is is to point out the equivalent difference in focal length. Christopher only mentioned the focal length difference. That's why I wrote what I wrote.
*****
I have nothing further to add. If there's a point in mentioning equivalent focal length, there's a point in mentioning equivalent aperture.
Another great review..
Hi Chris, your lens reviews are the best on the market. I mean it. And I love your rabbit! :)
Thanks! The rabbit's name is 'Snuffy' (I didn't name her)

Nice reviews! Can you also do a review for the Canon EF 35mm f1.4L USM? Thanks in advance!
Not really planning to - the Sigma 35mm 1.4 is just as good and half the price, so everyone's going for that these days :0)
l'm surprised many of Canon's lenses have not been updated in over 25 years.
Your reviews are really good, thanks for making them!

I'm not going to review the 28mm lens, but a review of the similar 24mm version is coming
Christopher Frost Photography Ok thanks!
Can you please do the 100-400 mark 2? and possibly the 11-24mm f4?

I want to buy for potrait, both canon 135mm or 100mm f2 for better choice ?
I would love to see a review of the 200mm 2.8L.
I would also, for the price it looks to be a good ,cheaper alternitave to the fast zooms for indoor sports or events.
A review of that lens is coming in a month or so!
Christopher Frost Photography Excellent! I have been considering it as an alternative to the 70-200 F4.
I like all your reviews I hope one day we can watch your reviews with 5Ds

I wanna set up a 2 FF body kit, one with a 40stm and the other with either 85mm or 100mm f2 usm. What do you guys recommend? They're about the same price used.
I compare those two lenses at the end of this video
Should I buy this or 85mm 1.8 regarding Sharpness and Portraits Photography?

Waiting for sigma 150-600mm review
Thanks Chris !
Great Video
Is the abberation/fringing on this lens really bad?
Hey chris, do you think this would be an ideal lens to use for sports on a 7d mkii from an autobfocus point of view?
It could well be okay
@@christopherfrost thanks for the reply. However, I had a steal on a pristine sigma art 135mm. The lens performs great for action & is seriously sharp, fantastic buy with unique looking shots
im deciding if i should get a 100mm F2 or 70-200 F4. what would be a more useful lens ?
Depends what you need. The zoom lens would be more versatile, the f/2 lens would give more out of focus backgrounds
Thanks for the response. i didnt expect you still monitor old videos :)
how will compare this to yongnou 100mm f2
How is the focus breathing when rack focusing for video?
bro do u even white balance your pics?
Thanks again for the great review! So informative :)
I am seriously considering to buy this lens, however I am still a little unsure weather this is the right focal lenght for me. I would mainly be taking portraits with it, both of pets and people. Since you have tested it on an aps-c camera, how far do you have to back away from your subject with the effective 160 mm focal length? (I will be using it mostly outdoors, but still I'd like to know)
+Anny Huang Depends what sort of picture you want. I'd want to be 1.5-2 meters away
I own both, the 100mm is much sharper wide open.
Wide open yes, it is
what about the newest yongnuo lens?
Do you plan on reviewing the yongnuo copycat of this lens?
Maybe one day - I have reviewed the 85mm f/1.8 Yongnuo lens though
Yep, saw that one, bought that lens based on your review. AF is glitchy on video mode on an 80D. With that exception and the the dying R2D2 noise of the focus motor, it is flawless.
I love your videos, I don't even bother looking at any other people's reviews because yours is quick and easy and very systematic. I also caught your subliminal message! @ 5:56 haha nice!
Good video. One question. How do you turn on the in camera corrections like chromatic aberration corection in the canon 70d?
it's in the menus under lens aberration correction
Thanks.
Did someone tried this 100mm with MC-11 on a Sony FF? Is the eye-af fast enought for portraits working?
My canon 85 worked with it so probably the 100mm I'm getting will too. However, some have said that they haven't gotten it, so I don't know if I just stumbled on some settings in my camera that made it work or not.
Now that I've had the Canon 100 f2 on my Sony A7rii with the MC-11 adapter, it has worked wonderfully. The portraits really have a wonderful bokeh and professional look to them.
Do you have a review of the Yongnuo 100mm f/2?
Nope - but I have covered the 85mm version)
Christopher Frost Photography yeap, saw that one. Do you think that for an amateur is a good choice going for the Yongnuo?
Would this also be a good macro lens for corals, fish in aquarium?
If you watch the review, you'll see that I talk about how it performs with close-up images
Christopher Frost Photography lol
This is nice!
Would like to have a yongnuo 100mm.
I had one for about two days. Had a terrible time with manual focusing and the AF wasn't always that great...now enjoying my Canon 100 F2 and it's great.
How do you compare with this and Laowa 105. Except the af ?
Take a look at my review of that Laowa lens :-)
Why is an APS-C sensor "a more punishing sensor" than a full frame sensor? is that intrinsic to crop sensors generally, or something to do with the 70D compared to the 6D?
why turn on the camera correction on lens. some camera had no that function.
Most cameras made within the past 6 years do
On a full frame...The 100mm is perfect for portraits. The 135mm is to long for portraits and too short to be considered telephoto on full frame.
Thank you !!!
hi there how is this lens with 70D to take portrait pics.Does f-stop it multiply 2 x 1.6 on aps-c cuz i search for bokeh lens i dont know for 70-200mm cuz on my aps-c.
Christopher Frost Photography Chris, I cannot even start to tell you how much you've helped me with that reply, THANK YOU!
Any reason to get the 100mm f2.8 L over this one?
rich Mck weather sealed, Stabilized way sharper, Macro capabilities
Will it work with D600
is this good for landscape photography?
Yes but most people prefer a zoom lens for landscape for the added flexibility
Hello, I have a Canon Powershot SX520 HS which has the same filter size as this (58mm) so would this lens or the 85mm fit my camera? Anyone? Thanks.
+Arnie MUFC You need to buy a digital SLR camera (like the Canon 100D) if you want to buy separate lenses
shut the fuck up
No. Unfortunately. You need a canon camera with an ef or ef-s Mount. It Will fit any eos camera
A10 M did you just say that to Chris when you answered your question? Wow dude
Why does watching this video make me think about a talking Cactus? It's the strangest thing...
sigmas 24-70 f2.8 (not art) .. would be great..
can this fit on a rebel t5i?
All Canon mount lenses made since 1987 will work on your Canon APS-C digital SLR camera, except EF-M lenses
please chris review the tamron 24 70
thm hbk That's a great lens. Yeah, it would be fun to see Chris do a review on that.
***** yeah i wounder if it is good for portrait and wedding
because it would be my new lens isa
thm hbk
Well, f2.8 is nice for indoors during the day, and it's flexible with that zoom range.
***** good point but i need something fast zoom with is and not very expensive
also i need it in video work
overall i need a lens that it can be for most uses but mostly in wedding and portrait
maybe the tamron is the best choice right ??
do you feeling comfortable with it ??
thanks for your reply :)
thm hbk Well, for video work having image stabilisation is almost a must, unless you use tripod exclusively.
It also sports a t-stop value which is pretty much identical to the f-stop value, which is rare.
yongnuo 100mm f2!
N64!
Has anyone so far commented on the „subliminal message“? 😊
Nikon. Nikon is way better than canon on the mid range dslr's
Muballigh Hossain Oranges. Oranges are way better to eat than lemons.I thought I would join you in making similarly irrelevant comments.
Haagen Dazs. Haagen Dazs is way better than Ben & Jerry's as a mid range ice cream
You guys are awesome :v

"Nikon is way better than canon on the mid range dslr's " Unless you want to make a video :P
say its sharp in the center of the aps-c image...
its not.. at all, not even a little bit.
Watch the video, and you'll see the proof
Yeah, I watched it... its not sharp. At all.
