By popular demand: The 10 Sharpest APS-C Lenses for 2019

  • I decided to launch this lens a few weeks early in order to help people with their Christmas lists! And it's a video made by popular demand. If you want to see the video about full-frame lenses, here it is: • The 10 Sharpest Lenses...
    These are:
    1) APS-C lenses I've tested (and I mostly test on Canon and Sony gear, and some Fuji lenses (more to come!) so sorry, but no Nikon, Micro 4/3 etc.)...
    2) ...which cost under £1,000 GBP (approx. $1,300 US)
    FAQ's:
    q) Where is the Sigma 16/30/56mm f/1.4? a) Haven't tested them yet...although that is due to change soon.
    q) Where is my favorite Fuji lens? a) I refer you to my previous answer ;-)
    q) Why haven't you tested any Nikon lenses? a) I've answered this question many times - it's basically just a lack of time. I love Nikon equipment but I simply don't have time to test lenses on every camera system. I had to draw a line somewhere, so in future I'll be reviewing lenses from all different manufacturers which are available on Canon, Sony and Fuji cameras. I may be reviewing the new Nikon full-frame lenses in the future - I certainly want to - it depends on if I can get the Patreon funds together to hire a Z7 and the lenses.
    Support me on Patreon! www.patreon.com/christopherfr...
    All pictures and footage shot by me on Canon 60D, 70D, and EOS M3 cameras, and Sony a7R II, a6300 and a5100 cameras.

    Would love to see you review the Fuji 16mm F1.4 and the 56mm F1.2. I got the chance to play with the 16mm at a trade fair yesterday, and man did it impress. Super close min focus, and from what I could tell it is sharp as a tack too, with minimal distortion for a wide lens. Fuji is starting to really impress me with that 16mm and the X-T3, it is hard not to grab one of each and have a go at it.

    Definitely agree with 55-250mm IS STM lens. That's the best deal I have ever got. Previously I used 70-200 f4L lens and this one is just the same IQ with lower maximum brightness but for the size and price - just WOW! :-) I use it with great EF-S 24mm f2.8 lens and I'm very satisfying with this combo on 70D for allaround photography.

  • @JodyBruchon
    @JodyBruchon 5 лет назад +36

    FYI, a Canon EF-S user cannot go wrong buying the EF-S 24mm f/2.8 pancake lens. It's a very sharp ~35mm equivalent prime and the only gripe anyone should ever have with it is the slow focus speed. It weighs practically nothing, the quality (at f/2.8 even!) is undeniable, the focal length makes it a great all-around prime, it's pretty cheap, and it's freaking f/2.8!

    • @666Tomato666
      @666Tomato666 5 лет назад +5

      f/2.8 is dark, sorry, Canon spoiled us with the nifty-fifty
      but even in absolute terms, f/2.8 is just one stop more than the typical kit lens at the wide end

    • @derekderekderek2

    • @JodyBruchon
      @JodyBruchon 5 лет назад +11

      @@666Tomato666 No, f/2.8 is not dark. Most lenses that can reach f/2.0 or better are also not the sharpest at those apertures. Unless you're buying very expensive lenses, f/2.8 is where most fast lenses reach maximum sharpness. One stop is double the light, requiring half the ISO and noise for the same exposure, and you're hand-waving that? I own the EF 50mm f/1.8 and while it's a sharp lens, it's not some sort of magic low-light wand and its maximum sharpness is not at or near f/1.8. It's also an 80mm on APS-C which is a telephoto focal length and not practical for most casual shooting scenarios.

    • @jportrait1100
      @jportrait1100 5 лет назад +3

      Jody Bruchon he doesn’t know what he’s talking about.. 2.8 is not dark. I have the 24 pancake on my sl2 & it’s a really nice setup. I wanted something compact that I can carry around & I find my self taking way more pics bc it’s lightweight & it’s a sharp lens. I also have the 55-250 on this list & it’s a great lens

    • @666Tomato666
      @666Tomato666 5 лет назад +2

      @@derekderekderek2 and EF-S 24mm f/2.8 is not a zoom, it's a prime
      @UCZNy_u_bnCCfalW-XBFUaCw not all lenses are their sharpest at f/2.0, but there are plenty that are. Yes you need half the ISO, but the noise falls logarithmically with ISO, halving it likely won't even reduce the noise by 10%. The bigger problem is the lack of background separation, this you can't work around by manipulating other settings. And yes, 50 mm is telephoto on APS-C, but it has the price, aperture and sharpness I expect from a non-super-telephoto lens. 24mm one is almost 2 stops slower. At least it doesn't have the insane price of the EF-S 35mm.

    Would love to see you review the Viltrox EF-EOS M2 speedbooster, and you could do a great comparison between M-body and your 6D full frame with EF lenses. I have Canon M5 and always hankered after a full frame camera but EosR is just too expensive, so I got the EF-EOS M2 to try today, initial impressions are the fov is great - almost full frame equivalent, but not had much chance to test, it doesn't auto-retract focus when camera switched off which is annoying with nifty 50mm but my other EF lenses all have internal focus so not so much of an issue, people have complained of infinity focus issue and it apparently drains camera battery even when camera is off.

    The Canon 10-18 and 55-250 are really great on my M50. I didn’t know about the Sigma 50-100 though.
    I really like the range of the 55-250, but that f/1.8 sounds on the Sigma sounds amazing (and looks good!).
    I was saving up for the Canon 70-200 f/2.8, though now I’m a little torn.
    Having the reach and aperture of the 70-200 is nice, but I think I’d really get some mileage of out that Sigma.

    Now that I shoot on FF I miss few of the APS-C lenses I owned, like the Tokina 11-16 f/2.8 and the 24mm STM.
    I also was quite interested in the 18-35 and 50-100 and I had the chance to test them on a Nikon body, and boy oh boy they are impressive. I really wish Sigma develops something similar for the full frame telephoto environment, the 24-35 f/2 is impressive but not perfect, the range is quite limited and the lack of weather sealing makes me want to go towards the Tamron 24-70 G2

    I actually commented on the Full Frame 2019 sharpest lenses video, I had no idea you had made an aps-c top 10 as well, excellent work. I have the Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 and it really is an incredible lens. My only grip with it is that it doesn't go to 16mm which is really one of my preferred focal lengths but after watching your review on the Samyang 16mm F2, I went for that and have that covered very nicely so its not a big deal. Two outstanding lenses right there really. The only thing I can really add is that the Sigma 50-100mm is only available in Sigma, Canon and Nikon mounts. There is no Sony version of it that I am aware of (although mirrorless adapters will make it work on e-mount bodies). I'm not picking faults though, really enjoyed your comparison video.

      I actually tried to but the copy of the lens I borrowed was terribly de-centered, so I had to send it back. One day I will review it

    I really want the sharpest lens I can find for a cheap-ish budget for canon EOS rebel T1i 500D!
    Any recommendations for cheap-ish razor sharp lens with minimal other abberations? or am i screwed?

    I was really shocked and surprised when I didn't see the Sigma trio (16mm f1.4, 30mmf 1.4 & 56mm f1.4) on your list cause I've seen your reviews of 16mm & 56mm. But then when I went back and checked I saw the reviews were done after the making of this video and then everything was right in the universe again.
    Any chance we're going to see a review of the Sigma 40mm F1.4 Art lens soon? There are rumours on the internet that it's the sharpest lens ever made! I would love to see your opinion on it.

    Hey Chris! Have you ever thought about reviewing something like the Sony 70-200mm F4G, or even the 55-210? Could be very interesting to see how they compare to DSLR (Canon/Nikon) equivalents.

    I have an old Sony NEX-5R mirrorless camera with the kit 16-50mm lens. Picked up the Sony E50mm F1.8 OSS in the Black Friday sales last week and delighted to see it mentioned here in the Top 10. I'd like to add 1 more lens to my bag...so I have the 16-50, a brand new Prime 50mm and seeking 1 more recommendation...can anyone suggest anything?

    im very happy that samyang 16mm get into your list. i actually dont know that my lens comes out to be one of the sharpest in samyang line. Although according to dpreview, it is not that sharp. im happy though.

    I am interested in cannon 70-200 mm F/4.0 USM II for my APSC body (77D). Using it on APSC body will convert it into 112-320 mm F/6.4. Can you suggest any other lens apart from sigma 50-100mm F/1.8 that provides similar result. I intent to use mainly for photography. Thanks 😊

    Another great video and review - I was disappointed not to see any 18-50 or 18-55 "walkaround" lenses in the list such as the very capable Sigma 18-50 f/2.8 for example.

    Chris, i do video work for my daily research project. i have wide angle and potrait lenses. now im looking for standart prime/not-prime lens. Which one do you think i should take regarding image quality and low-light performance, they are : Sigma 35mm f1.4 art, Samyang 35mm t1.5, Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 or Sigma 30mm f1.4? i shoot with apsc sensor, that’s why i need 35mm as a standart lens. Sharpness in the widest open is important since i work often at night videography.

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  5 лет назад

      It depends what camera you're using. If it's a Canon digital SLR then the 35mm f/2 IS USM is the one you want. If it's a mirrorless camera then the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 is a good option

    Ah damn you! Why'd ya have to mention the Tamron? I've been saving for a while, passed on one in new shape for $160 due to a lack of funds. Now they'll be going for $300 haha. Seems like the perfect nifty fifty for me.
    At least I have one lens on this list, the Rokinon 16mm.
    Thanks as always for the Videos, Chris.

    Thoughts on video quality and sharpness from the sigma 18-35 1.8 (APS-C) anyone? Also do you think a new alternative/successor lens might come out sometime soon?
