Roshi, this game take place after their Journey to The West. they succeded. they got the scripture and Wukong came back to his mountain to live in peace, but just to find out all his kind have been murdered. he mention his master Tripitaka, piggy, and the scripture. Correct me yt people if am wrong. i got that from their conversation on the opening.

The first boss in the tutorial fight has so many different attacks that I've watched half a dozen different RUclipsrs fight him and the boss shows at least one unique attack in each video that isn't present in the other videos. In this video, he swings around his axe horizontally, uses a dozen different floating swords, and shoots laser beams from his eyes. In other videos, he pulls out his sword as a melee weapon and dual wields weapons. Most videos I see more laser-eye shooting and the boss doesn't use the swords or the axes. In another video, he uses a flaming/golden power kick. In other videos, he has a red lightning attacks and/or sometimes golden lightning attacks. In another video, he has a special ground slam attack with his axe.
That's call being productive, this team that put this game together went to work. They really wanted to show out and prove the games don't have to be limited only by the imagination and when you use a story plot like Journey from the West you damn sure have a lot of plot to work with. Wukong is one of my favorite legends in game and in literature. It's just so great to see different takes on the story. The idea that this is after the Journey's end and these clowns annihilated his kin is diabolical. Can't wait to see how Wukong takes care of these clowns.
The first boss is Erlang Shen, nephew of Jade Emperor and general of heaven. Erlang is the only god who is equal to Wukong in terms of skills and power. So him has so many different styles of attack is actually lore accurate.
I saw your tweet on X about the reviewer talking about the games difficulty, and I totally agree, Roshi, that they were heavily downplaying it. The graphics, story characters, enemies/boss, and the overall aesthetic are very dope. Also, I agree with the assessment that this is more of a mixture between GoW and Stellar Blade, while being its own thing. I'm really, very much digging it as well.
Honestly surprised that the game is set post Wukong story. I too thought that it was a flashforward since he is fighting the army of heaven, but then they also mention that Erlang already bested Wukong in a fight, meaning they already tried to boil him, which also means that Buddha already tricked Wukong and put a mountain on him. Which explains why Wukong's crown is present here, since the monk who freed Wukong from the mountain put it on him to stop him from killing. Which makes this story post-Journey to the West, but apparently the main character will relive it ? Since it is going through against some familair faces
Wukong turned into a bird and said that the sky was too bright before flying away. In fact, it is the haze given to him by the Buddha. The Buddha once turned into a mountain with one hand, which suppressed Wukong for 500 years.
You would have enjoyed the game much more if you know the actual story of Journey To The West. The in game story is basically a made up story to posted Journey To The West but there are so many references and they even brought in my all time favorite character later on in the story.
That's what i wanted gow Valhalla dlc gave me hope more linear. Just needed big cinematic boss fights and more god of war 3. But with the new Kratos story line of his redemption that happened in ragnarok

The game is OKAY. It's no God of War, Spider-Man, Batman Arkham, or Final Fantasy 7. There's literally not immersion, no exploration, no engagement, no puzzles, no nothing. Just run and mash, lol. And the combat (and camera) is mid, and the story is wack as hell, lol. This game is leaning on visuals way more than anything and I paid for a GAME.🥴 It's literally just a big budget beat 'em up. I honestly rather play Streets of Rage 4 than this.😂
