New Totaka is out! He did the soundtrack for Nintendo's NSO Playtest that's going on right now. The whole OST is out on the internet to listen to and it's incredible. It sounds like a spiritual successor to his work on Polygon Studio and Talent Studio.

I feel like the 64DD was the most missed potential of anything Nintendo's done. Everything they made for it were among the best n64 games, and I like how pretty much everything they made for it emphasized custom content (F-Zero X's track editor, the entire Mario Artist Series and even Animal Crossing). I feel like if it hadn't failed, there may have been a lot more focus on making custom content in their future games

I literally would still buy it if they released the DD today 😅

Crazy how they gate-kept this game and it's hot music from us westerners :(
    Love this video!

I would have been addicted to the N64DD if I had it as a kid...

Thanks for the informative video about Kazumi Totaka! Always love learning more about him and his music.

Thx for enjoying ✌️There's surprisingly little that I could find about him in terms of interviews, bio stuff. I would love someday to find an interview where he lists off a bunch of musical influences!

@@bitblitz That would be very cool! I'd like to find an interview like that with him, too. He seems like such an interesting person.

Very nice! I have only rudimentary knowledge of music theory concepts, so it's always cool to see that analysis of a track's structure and what sort of response it's designed to elicit.
One bit of extra info here: what you called the "inventory menu" is actually the data management screen shared by all the Mario Artist games - it lets you save/load models and other data files to/from the disks, and also has an option where you can hotswap to save/load from any other disk in the Mario Artist series, allowing you to, say, export your model from Polygon Studio and load it up in Talent Studio to put it in your film. What I find interesting here - and what I didn't realize until I watched this - is that all 4 Mario Artist games have a different, unique background track for this menu, even though it's otherwise identical.

Thanks for that context! Utterly insane how much is packed into this whole suite considering how limited a release it received.
Kid BitBlitz would have LOVED the interconnectivity and creative vibe of it all
      .. 😭

Interesting! Some of the tracks/styles here (3:10, 4:15) got carried over to Warioware DIY on the DS, too. Probably due to that Mario Paint lineage, I guess? Also, thanks for letting us know about Totaka's musical side project!

Funny that you mention that 😅
Ryoji Yoshitomi, who composed a bunch of the WarioWare stuff (including Drifting Away) seems to have worked with Totaka during the latter's earliest Nintendo days...including on Mario Paint 🎨
I'm guessing they continued to be close as colleagues, so seeing them share melodies between series' would make sense to me.

im gonna make a leap of faith and say youre into street of rage 3's ost, you should do a video talking about that and teaching people about it so more people appreciate it and atleast TRY to understand whats going on in it lol. not quite fusion, but avant groove tech

I might get to that OST someday! At the moment I've been chipping away at a video on Wave Race 64 (also Totaka), and then perhaps I'll get back to more "chip music" analysis for a while
