Here’s a fun fact. At the time this was recorded, Mark Farner, lead vocal and guitar, and Don Brewer, drummer, we’re both 21 years old. The bassist, Mel Schacher, was only 18 years old.

pancho perfulcro Probably because lots of hair was the style back in the sixties and early seventies, and enough of it will make a person look older. Mark Farner was born on September 29, 1948, Don Brewer was born on Sept 3, 1948, and Mel Schacher was born on April 8, 1951.

This was my all time favorite band. Saw them many times at the LA Forum. Black Sabbath opened for them, and that was a two night trip.(1970) Last night performance I went in as a twenty year old, and came out twenty one year young! Great way to break a right of passage moment in ones life. I felt Mark had one of the best rock and roll voices ever. Best live show everybody grooving hard, Grand Funk was one of the loudest bands out there. Mark used to get down on his knees and just lean back and wail on his guitar at the edge of the stage. (earlier days) Girls would go up and run their hands up and down his legs! Man I envied him! I also got to meet the boys a couple times out at Los Angeles Airport. (LAX) They were the nicest guys to a young guy still buzzin from the concert the night before. Just down to earth... I love reading the comments from fans who saw and grooved to this band. Well I am 71 years young, still rockin' and I know that is why my generation are still out kickin azz and taking names. It's only a number....turn it up :)

Of course, THIS one of their songs that was NEVER played on Top 40 radio stations, so believe it or not, this is my first time hearing/seeing this song/performance. That BASS! Those screaming, raspy vocals. How could anyone sit still while hearing/seeing this performance.

I’m obsessed with this, now. My dad has always loved Grand Funk, and I like a lot of their songs, but I did not not know they got down THIS hard! Wow.

Karen Carpenter played drums while she sang and so did Phil Collins both as a solo artist and as a member of Genesis. Please hear Ticket To Ride/Carpenters and In The Air Tonight/Phil Collins. Also hear World Of Confusion/Genesis. Great music by great drummers. Btw, Grand Funk Railroad/I'm Your Captain (Closer To Home).

The drummer sings lead on the song "We're An American Band." Check it out. It was a big hit for GRR. Raw talent! I was a teen in the 70's. They were amazing. Also watch their live version of "Heartbreaker".

A basic drum set, a $200 guitar, and 3 guys barely out of high school in a TV studio with only a couple of dozen in the audience, and it blows me away every time I watch it! One of the greatest live performances ever captured on film.

Love watching you react to this great performance !! America's POWER TRIO !! In their day, they ROCKED !! When they opened a show for someone,
they always "Up-Staged" the main act, even Led Zep !! With a following of Rabid fans they soon became the Main Act !! And filled stadums across America and the Globe !! btw, When they opened for Rod Stewart and the Faces,
the crowd Boo'ed Rod Stewart off the stage !! GFR was the originaters of "Stadium Rock" they sold out Shea,
in 72-hours !! The Beatles took 3-weeks to sell-out Shea !! I saw them in '71 at Pirates World in Dania, Fl.
Promoters sold 15.000 tickets for a 10,000 venue and the people rioted and over-turned 3 Miami police cars !! If their manager (a friend) hadn't taken every penny and left them NOTHING, they would have been the biggest Band EVER !! Mark Farner is still rock'in today, after decades of legal battles to finally, get the "rights" back enough to play GFR songs again !! GFR is the best thing to ever come out of Flint, Michigin (except maybe the GM Buick). Long Live GFR and Mark Farner !!

It took the Beatles two weeks to sell out their 1965 Shea Stadium show.
Grand Funk Railroad did it in 72 hours in 1972.... and the authorities almost shut down the show midway through because the fans jumping around and the wattage put out by the sound system almost damaged the structural integrity of the stadium.

I believe they opened 1 time for Led Zeppelin and only 1 time. Seems Zeppelin’s management didn’t want them again due to them upstaging them. GFR had so much energy in concert. I’m so glad to be of an age to have seen all the great bands when they were just starting and grow over the years

    • @joedanis2889

It was worse than that. Grand Funk was kicking ass, and Led Zepplin was very intimidated. LZ's management told GF to stop playing and get off the stage. The band refused to cut their set short, so LD cut power to the stage. It's hard to continue playing when the headliner band cuts off all the power to your equipment.

Seeds of greatness, until jealousy and greed crept in. They opened for Zepplin and embarrassed them till Zepplins manager litterly pulled the 🔌 plug to end the misery. Full disclosure, I'm a Zepplin fan also, but I feel GFR would have be as big if not bigger if the BS don pulled on Mark never happened.
