You are right, nobody wanted to follow them. Grand Funk opened for Led Zeppelin, first comcert on the tour, half way through the set, Zeppelin's manager told GF manager to get them off stage, he wouldn't do it until he grabbed him by the throat. They shut the power off the stage, cut the performance, Led Zeppelin didn't want to be upstaged. GF also sold out Shey stadium faster than the Beatles.

One of the BEST kick a** rock trios in rock history. Met Mark on several occasions back stage. A true gentleman. He actually makes you feel comfortable and at ease. Sad that the group did him dirty years ago and coerced him out of the band. We fans have to pay the price for that. The new GFR does not sound the same without Mark. My personal opinion.

Saw them in concert a couple of years after this. I was a little high (just a little) but I'll never forget Mark Farner shirtless, tight red pants, armband..& by then his hair was down past the middle of his back. My little teenaged heart almost couldn't take it.
And oh, yeah, they were great. Amazing how much good music 3 guys could put out. That's why it's called a power trio.
Check out "I'm Your Captain". Interesting tale of a mutiny.
"Mean Mistreater" is a favorite. And "We're An American Band" was probably their biggest radio hit.💙☮💙

Mean Mistreater is also a favorite of mine. Live in Jacksonville, FL (1970) is the best imo. I don't think there's video for that performance but the audio/vocals is great. It's the same version from their Greatest Hits album so that should speak for itself. But Van, you should definitely hit We're An American Band next, also Footstompin' Music. The thing to remember about these 60's and 70's bands is they didn't have the tech we have now. No 'in ears' , no wireless mics or guitars, etc. I don't know much about the mixing and engineering side of it but I know that has come a long way since then too. And they just kill it. One final note, after you become acquainted with their catalog, you too will probably be just as confused as the rest of their fans as to how they are not in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. They should be acknowledged. They are awesome.

Farner’s mom bought him that $200 guitar, and check out that drum kit, it’s a basic, beginner kit. And ALL THAT came out of only three guys! The rest of their music isn’t as heavy as this one. I looked up that lyric you asked about and it goes: "And when my time is up you'll be my reefer". :D There's several references in there. Now I understand why I didn't hear this on on the radio when it first came out.... Plus, it's a bit long to get much radio play. American radio stations preferred to play songs that averaged three and a half minutes or less. It helped them increase the amount of time available for advertisements. BTW: The guys in GFR were from the Flint, MI community and they took their bands' name from the railroad that ran through it: Grant Trunk Railroad.

He is as kind and gentle a family man as he is talented. I do not give my admiration or comments lightly and I admire Mark greatly. Last year he sold out our local casino in under thirty minutes. Wife couldn't get out to the garage fast enough to tell me. Missed out getting tickets. Mark has ten years on me and he still kicks it on stage like that. Keep on rocking young man! 😊👍✌

Both, true statements, my Brother! Saw them 3 times in the early 70's! What a
concert/show they put on! Pure energy, pure fire, pure entertainment! Hardly sat
down during the ENTIRE SHOW! Still listen to their music! BTW, Mark, Don and I
      are the same age 😉!

I've loved this band ever since I saw them play in 1970, when I was 11. First indoor concert, first time I got kicked out of a concert for letting people in free, got back in ten minutes later by someone also letting people in free. They are all great players, I especially love the bass player, with his completely laid back attitude while laying down cool bass lines. Good post

Badasses, all of them! Carmine Appice, the drummer, can sing while playing (tough), and was admired for his mad skills, by none other than BONZO.

Awesome Reaction 👏👏 I like how you give each musician/instrument their due 👊💜 btw, Don ( drummer ) sings lead on 'We're An American Band', might want to give it a listen to see if you change your opinion regarding his vocals.
