  • I've always wondered if you can make some cake or a muffin in a camp pot. With no oven, it could be a challenge.
But follow along as I test out a "steam-baking" method for cake on the trail.
Dry baking. Baking in camp stove / backpacker stove.

I love to steam bake on the trail! I use Wilton silicon muffin cups with feet. I make biscuits, muffins and cupcakes. Yum!

How long does it take? Do you stir as you go?

I did this for my daughter during the pandemic

Back when I lead BWCA trips I used to pack in 1 orange for every 2 people. After slicing the oranges I’d gave everyone a half and have them eat the flesh out of the rind leaving it intact. I’d then fill each half with cake mix and wrap it with foil leaving room for it to expand. The cake takes on a lot of orange flavor.

I made cake once out in the backcountry! I used all the usual (dehydrated) ingredients for a gluten free/paleo mug cake. It turned out pretty good! I didn't steam it like you did, so the bottom was more cooked than the rest of it, but it was still yummy 😋
I love all these ideas you have!

Instead of water. Try using pop. In the case of Chocolate cake. A can of Rootbeer or Pepsi. The cake will be fluffy and moist.

Thanks Chef Corso, I've got a scratch chocolate mug cake steaming in a water bath, right now. No worries about burning it, unless I let it boil dry, a few more mins, my toothpick is too short... That sounds wrong 😝
Hmmm... Monk fruit sweetener, wasn't sweet enough, after the water bath, if not for the dark chocolate balls, I couldn't have finished it. Maybe I can add some later, in a chocolate fondue sauce?

@Chef Corso I did this before but I made mayonnaise depression cake. (when eggs and milk were scarce during the Depression this what they did ) Mayonnaise is made from oil and eggs so a mayo packet add some water and cook as you did. I will try this way to and see if it turns out any different. Oh and I added dehydrated strawberries.

A muffin tin paper liner would keep your pot clean.

I haven’t had that experience but I’m sure different rocks are more prone to that

You know, I heard somewhere that most of the mixes that require milk or eggs was added to make it to where the person making it felt like they were using "real" ingredients.

Have you tried doing "mug treats" in this fashion? They're microwavable cakes. Idk if they'd work the same or not.

Can you use mayo packets as a sub for the oil and eggs?

    • @ChefCorso
      @ChefCorso  3 года назад

It can work but might give you an interesting twang flavor. I found they aren't quite needed when steam baking. But worth a try!
