I go in-depth on these popular flat-pedal mountain bike shoes, so you can decide which MTB shoe works best for you and learn which one to avoid!
Which MTB shoe are you currently rocking?
vans lol
@@darinbennett6036 my feet would die in vans
@@MEvsMTB thankfully im only 15 and have young joints of teflon
I'm using a Five Ten Trailcross. 😅
@@rjalcoriza4470 my buddy rides those. The ones that have the gaiter built in. Pretty cool for winter riding
It’s so weird how often the exact same shoe is so different. I’ve probably tried on 12 different pairs of Freerider Pros and they all fit my foot so differently. Same shoe, same size, same color, etc. Some had too much room in the toe, others not enough room, some felt horrible the moment I slid them onto my feet when others didn’t, some comfortable and others not, etc. It’s crazy at how inconsistent they are. For me at least. Reality is, just like a lot of things, there’s no shoe that’s best for everyone. Each person, if possible should try on as many shoes as they can (even if it’s the exact same shoe in the same size). Everyone’s feet are different and all shoes are different. Try’em all if possible
I have at least 6 pair of flat pedal shoes here, sounds like others have way more.
Always looking for that next fix.
That's been my experience too, and not just 5/10 but all of Adidas. That's why I mostly wear Nike . Last 20 years I've ordered size 10 online, probably over 40 pairs and they all fit the same. Adidas and 5/10 I range anywhere between 9-10.5 which is why I don't usually get em. This year I'm running Fox Union BOA flats so we'll see.
Thats crazy man, i would never even think about something like this possible...i mean for a few mm difference here and there i get it...they cant all be perfect...but such felt difference is what made me decide to look elsewhere
I have 3 pairs of Freerider pro's (two regular ones, one with D3O) and one pair of Impact pro's and they all fit the same as all my fivetens I've had since the first ones in 2005.
I bought a pair of funky mid-top Nike fashion shoes at the outlet for $50 that work fantastic. They have a soft, flat sole that are nice and stiff from a shank inside and they're very comfortable. I've done several 50 mile rides with them. They have over 500 miles on them and still look new. Only a couple very small nicks in the sole from my flats. MTB specific shoes are a ripoff and mostly have narrow toe boxes... just find a comfortable shoe that's stiff enough and has a great sole on them. Hit the outlets.
Just got the Fox Union flats in grey. They're great, you just gotta go up a size. I'm a 10 in Nike, Adidas and Five Ten so I ordered 11 and they fit perfectly. Mostly wore Five Ten Freeriders which are great, but I wanted to try something different with less of a skater aesthetic. These are light, comfortable, have great grip with my DMR Vault pedals, have good protection without too much bulk, and while I can't speak to their durability yet, they're very well made. Never tried BOA but I can see what all the hype is about, they're great and while unnecessary, they're a nice luxury to have (kinda like Fidlock chin straps). Highly recommend!
Yeah we are interested in the details bro. We are mountain bikers whatever form we come in and we are always looking for information, because many biking things just cost too much and the more we know the better we are placed at making purchase decisions, so thumbs up and keep at it!
Shoes and pedals are such a personal thing. But its good to know more about all these shoes!
Currently use some Pearl Izumi's for road riding, as they are an overall stiff sole and fit well.
5/10's freerider pro for mt bike riding and gravel bike riding. They work, no problems I can see.
I had some of the early Shimano flat pedal shoes with BOA closure, they got so floppy I use em for slippers now, 200.00 slippers.
Most tests always say the grip is 80% or even 85% as good as 5/10 stealth rubber. When comparing other shoes.
An epic review mate well done!! I have a pair of Five tens and for years thought they were the best, but different companies caught onto the secret sauce, the rubber grips they use. The shoe fits great but not so much durable as some of five tens newest contenders. Great work keep it up 🤙🏼
I was shocked you didn’t already have 1000 subscribers
I wear Solomon’s when I ride, very grippy and can help if you need to dismount to keep your footing in tight places. The soles are so deep and the tread is so tall, even my metal pedals can’t put a dent in them. They are the closest thing to having a tank on each foot as you can get.
Pearl Izumi Launch Mid Boa. Stick like glue. Roomy toe box. Boa so much better than laces. Love them
Thanks for review! Got the fox one and love them :) The video is good, but the sounds needs improvement. Get one of these little rode wireless clip on mics. YT viewers are pretty forgiving on image quality and cutting, but are very sensitive to bad sound.
Your production/video quality is top notch, the audio has a tunnel feel to it though.
Thanks bro! Yeah… I’ve been struggling with audio haha
Wear your lav mic … problem solved.
And also it isn't really mastered, at least not evenly... I found myself turning up the volume for the quieter parts, only to get my ears blasted out when he transitioned and the volume suddenly jumped way up 😅
Great review otherwise!
I know you have not blown up yet but your video quality is great keeo it up! Invest in a used dji wireless mic
I got the Fox clipless and I like them. They don't feel too narrow and are very stiff, two things I was looking for. They fit true to size. I preferred the fit over the Shimano AM9s which was the other shoe I was seriously looking at.
Glad you like them! I’m totally sold on them for a summer shoe
Thx! How did the Fox Unions work out for you? Any comments on fit/sizing? Thx!
stumbled across this review and i hadnt thought about getting bike specific shoes but now i might since I'm commuting through the seattle urban jungle 20 miles a day.
Great overview. I run a startup MTB shoe brand called Anamoly out of Austin, Texas - first launched out of Southern California on Kickstarter in 2021. This month we finally receive our first batch after a few production delays. Could I send you out a pair or two to review?
EDIT: They're wide, btw (one of the widest, if not _the widest_ on the market 😉).
You had me at 'WIDE' lol. The Galaxy, A-Line, and Beast Mode colorways are sick! Shoot an email to mevsmtb@gmail.com so we can coordinate 🤘🏻
I have just recently bought 2 pairs of the Fox Union Boa. For a long time I rode Ride Concepts. I do notice that the rubber on the union is sticky, but it doesn't seem as sticky as the RC's. I also have a little bit of a hot spot I get on the outside of my foot about an inch or so down from my pinky toe. I'm not sure if this is because I'm running aftermarket insoles or not. But it does get annoying. I've noticed it's worse on one pair as compared to the other.
Thank you for a great review of different brands! It was very helpful!
How about a mid height shoe? Some protection for the ankle bone,or whatever it's called .
I have relatively narrow feet but I don't mind a wider shoe if its virtually glued to the pedal as soon as you put any weight on it. Think of it as the flat pedal version of 'float' on clipless pedals.
I found the CB stamp shoes to run small. I went up a full size and they fit great with good toe space but keep your foot in place.
Thanks for sharing!!
Been riding on FiveTen Sleuths. Not as pricey and has a slimmer form, more like Addidas Sambas. They work just fine and the Stealth rubber is 100% KOM. Im not an aggressive DH rider so the Sleuths work great for me.
My friend was going to toss a pair of Cole Hann’s that he only wore twice, i snagged them after seeing the flat sole, quality canvas with nice leather trim, my spiked pedals after a year leave no marks stiff sole ,near perfect shoes.
Which shoes have the most top of foot protection? After smashing my foot wearing freerider pros this is crucial for me. Stiff sole, wide and toungue protection, ventilation doesn't matter, feet don't sweat
After riding emerica or DC shoes skate shoes for the last 20 yrs I bought a pair of Sombrino "sender" mtb specific at the recommendation of another local rider, they are horrible the sole isn't that bad but the shoes has no flex where it needs to, like wearing a tortoise I'd say.
I got a pair of "new" emerica omen hi top, I feel secure again 😂
Great review. Do you have any current reviews on kneepads?
I would also be intersted
The etnies suck, compared to the five tens, if you live in a wet environment and have to walk on slimy rocks and roots. Very little walking traction! The pins on flats don't grab as well on the Etnies.
I tried a pair of five ten. Not a good fit and bunched up my toes, so I got some dunlop steel toe cap motorbike shoes. Wide, stiff and ace protection. Incredibly cheap too. I'm staying with these
Five tens all day. I’ve tried most. 510 still my favorite
I tend to find the five tens too stiff in the sole and too sticky, I feel like I'm wearing a pair of planks, trying to adjust my feet is hard because they grip too well, you have to lift your foot off the pedal to adjust your foot position during riding if it has moved with normal trainners i can slide my foot. Also I get no feeling from the bike thru my feet I want to feel what the bike is doing under me so I can make small adjustments. I will not be buying another pair of five tens, I get better results with normal trainners. Everyone to there own thou, if you like them buy em.
6:21 The area you measured was not the toe box. WHEN WILL SHOE COMPANIES MAKE AN ERGONOMIC TOEBOX?! I’m tired of shoes cramping my toes together for no reason 😤
I have a pair of 5 10 before adidas bought them, amazing. I have a pair after adidas bought them, and the rubber is junk, and the shoe is so narrow my feet fall asleep. Thanks, for the video
Great video what's the best for rain Etnie's?
Liked the information you shared based on your experience. Too bad that it seems like the channel died, how everything's okay
Hey bro, you're audio is zoinking from left to right, stereo seems to be a bit messed up. Other than that, great vid 👍
I had a pair of etnies and after only 4 or 5 months the toe box started separating from the sole of the shoe. Emailed etnies and they were like yeah we only warranty our shoes for 90 days, sorry about your luck. Being super annoyed after spending 150 bucks on a pair of shoes, I put black shoe goo all over the part where it was separating. It looked absolutely awful and wore them for another couple months so everybody at the bike park could see them and be like "bro wtf is wrong with your shoes" so I could tell them exactly what happened and what etnies told me. LOL.
Then went and bought some freeride pros and have had them for over 2 years with no issues. The other issue with the etnies was the Michelin sole was terrible for grip. Maybe etnies are using a different sole now but the pair I had was horrific. I got so many shin hits cause my foot would just slip off the pedal so easily. It was so bad I started considering clipless or that there was something wrong with my riding. When I went over to five ten's, I was like oh, another shitty aspect of that shoe. lol
Bro, i cant find fox shoes anywhere here where i live to check how flexible are they. is sole more flexible than five tens? i mean when you try to bend them donwards. i like shoes a little softer so i can feel pedals more. thanks!
Are the fox as stiff as impact pro freeriders are too soft for park dh for me
Great review, comparison.
I was looking for shoes tha thad Sam breathability as Fiveten Freerider. Thos ei felt the breeze trough them. But not as durable as those shoes you mentioned. And felt surface trough the sole, so rocks, rough gravel. Maybe the Fox shoes can be an summer option for me.
I live in Norway, so the Enties shoe is only suitable for dry weather and a bit splashes. Not wet snow, deep puddle, and blasting them with water in puddles. That's where waterproof shoes with high gaiter come in. But I've not tried any proper ones yet.
I have Northwave Multicross Gtx, but the sole might be the stiffest sole on the market, even at the ball of the foot so it's like walking with wooden shoes. Also ankle, heel area is wider than Five Ten, Ride concepts, so need ankle braces to wear them, and even with wearing space brace 2 I feel a bit of heel lift off. But I stay warm and dry, as it has Goretex and proper gaiter. Apart from the ankle, heel thing the fit is the same. I had to get this type of shoe this was the only thing I could find in stock, but I will look into this type of shoe and try some, as I need to find a set tha ti's better to walk in. But the sole lacked grip, foot slid an could move it easily if I did not put the power on or stood on the pedals. But for spring, autumn and dry winter Ride concepts TNT is great. But too warm for summer.
But sole is comfy, stiff sole, but has right amount of upwards flex for walking. The sole dampens wells, comfy to walk in, of course enot running shoe like, but stiff most comfy shoes apart from running shoes I've walked in. I don't feel the rocks as much, can walk on rough gravel and rocks and not feel it as much if at all. The doebox is good too, thick and stif, whole front, but sides have more flex. But much better than fiveten, and better than first gen of Ride concepts. The 4.0 rubber grips as well a fiveten, as sticky, does not leave black marks on the floor.
Welcome from Norway! Yeah man, definitely take a look at the Fox shoes. I have more rides on them now after the video and I still love them. I wish there were more "cool" waterproof MTB shoes out there. Seems like the Multicross and Trailcross are the few that stand out.
@@MEvsMTB Leatt has released one last year, but it has a coil zipper at the gaiter with a button at the top. Coil zippers wear faster, easier to damage. So I am skeptic.
Appreciate the detailed review. 👍🏻👍🏻
I appreciate the feedback!! Coke back for more videos soon :)
@@MEvsMTB Look forward to hearing how the Fox Union flat shoes have held up 🫡
Well done bro! I like the five tens though those unions are looking good... my next pair??
The fox shoes do you have to go up half a size like five tens?
Crankbrothers fit different. I wear 1 size bigger in Crankbros compared to 5-10
Great video! Keep it up
strange , I love my stamp clipless and have wide feet. Do a bit of rock climbing though so maybe I like a shaped shoe.
I'm probably just too picky, but man Im not a fan of climbing shoes either haha
@ME vs MTB any update on the Fox Union durability?
Yeah, this is a really good review. Wish you would follow up with the fox union sole durability!
Etnies rock!!!
i wear five ten mtb shoe to ride bmx, not super grippy but it's comfy.
Send me a pair of the fox in size 9.5
You were wearing the WRONG 5TENS. The Freerider Pros are nowhere near as comfortable and after owning dozens of pair of Freerider and Freerider Pros trust me the Freeriders ARE Stickier (don't know why) and Way more comfortable. 🤪
I actually prefer my freerider pros to my freeriders. The pros definitely needed more break in though.
The pros are sick, loved mine, but the soles get shredded way too fast, I was going through 2 pairs a season. Switched to RC, not as grippy but good enough.
You're actually both wearing the wrong 5tens. Impact pro's are by far the best ones. Freeriders are horrible. The shoe is so freaking soft. Basically feels like a skate shoe. The Pro is stiffer and is thus way better when pedaling and offers atleast minumum protection. The impact pro is stiffer, offers more protection and offers more ankle support.
Any Vans will do the job.
so where is the review after 6 months?
guess the giveaway never happend?
Watching this 1 year later and you still haven't hit 1k subscribers 😂 keep grinding dude. If I saw this video now chances are the crappy RUclips algorithm is working in your favor right now
I bought my first Freeriders last year. I was so disappointed with those. They're just bad compared to Shimanos
hahahah yucks. FIVE TEN free rider is the best ~
Stil not 1000 subscribers. Maybe change that to 420 lol
500:-)
This guy trying to say that Adidas Five10 are not good? Great don’t wear them then no one cares 😂
NEED a 2 EE OR 3 EEE WIDE FLAT SHOE FOR MY MTB. STUD TYPE PEDALS, SAME as YOU HAVE ON YOUR TABLE ? I HAVE 5/10 Freerider Pro's for 3 YEARS NOW. STILL IN GREAT SHAPE. BUT SO, SO, SO, TIGHT. ANY HELP ???
Ever since Adidas bought 5Ten ,the shoes have never been the same.
