Great rig. I disagree with the comments suggesting to shoot 4k landscape and crop to vertical. That's a waste of a big chunk of the sensor which you've paid a lot of $$ for 😂 For an equivalent FOV, the crop would be MASSIVE. 16:9 portrait crop from a 16:9 landscape shot is a huge waste

Someone also made a good point that green screen work people shoot vertical because you get more vertical resolution and you don’t need the sides in green screen anyways

@@KofiYeboah That does make sense, I've done it but it can make framing any kind of movement pretty challenging compared to regular framing. Talking head standing or sitting though, it's pretty easy.

I have a restaurant opening coming up that client wants all in vertical. The Falcam setup (budget option 🤣) seems about the same price as the rs 3 mini that I was thinking about buying for this and future vertical shoots. Everyone has a monitor on their rigs and I’ve been resisting (i know I know) to stay compact because most of my client work is tripod talking head. You’re convincing me the need to level up the professionalism here.

By suffering and using either the dummy battery to d tap( not shown) or sometimes I don’t use the v mount for vertical content as it’s pretty short stuff, the fxlion powers the monitor that chews through battery life

I just wondering something, I never shoot vertical, I just crop 16:9 to vertical no problems at all. With my A7IV it is plenty of quality but I am wondering if the FX30 has the same "quality" for doing the same type of cropping. When using wider angle lens vertical is a NO go bc the edges or way more distorted and the quality of most lens are no good on the edges which making shooting vertically a NO GO. I am thinking about getting a FX30 and just wanted to know if it would be the same quality and dimensions as the A7IV even though it is a crop sensor? Hope that makes sense.. Thanks!!

one of the downsides of sponsorship is there are only a few companies like smallrig that do it well which ends up making all the content on youtube be about only a few brands. just try searching for a lesser known brand like nitzie for fx3 and there is literally nothing

    • @KofiYeboah

  • @danbrockettDOP

The real question for clients is "Why?" Why shoot vertical video? Unless it's specifically for vertical signage, or green screen shooting, the negatives far outweigh the positives when shooting 9:16 versus 16:9. The footage becomes basically unusable for anything but IG or Tik Tok, framing any kind of non standing human subject matter is just bass ackwards, it's the opposite of how humans see the world, I just don't get why this seems to be a huge trend with agencies and clients lately? Talk about hamstringing your footage for other venues and outlets.
But if clients want to waste the potential for the format and pay us to do so, I 100% agree with Kofi's take, it's a gig and money and the FX3/30 are perfect for shooting this way. Shooting vertical on an FX9 or 6 though is a PITA, although it can be done.

You should reach out to Kondor Blue and pitch them on the idea of making a vertical video cage! They collab with RUclips creators for cables so they seem like they might be open to making a cage for the FX3/30 that could go from 16:9 to 9:16. You never know until you send that initial email.

i have the KB cage for the FX3 and it's already nice for vertical, the top handle w record button attaches via nato, which is also on both sides of the cage. i have a Tilta wooden side handle (that black walnut is gorgeous) that's nato as well, so i can flip em both to go vertical in no time.
i just ordered the Silence Corner Atoll too, folks should take a look at that.
(those fxlion v-mounts are great for the price but why did they make the d-tap orientation perpendicular to the battery body? makes it difficult to impossible to use w plenty of battery plates)

  • @zachofalltrades7328

i TRULY believe, that filming vertical is a waste, and you should always film horizontal and a bit wider in 4k. this gives you post freedom to pan side to side.

@@KofiYeboah very true, i just found from a couple live events where i did film vertical, it was waaaay more difficult to do some things in post, and if i film in horizontal, this gives me/the client to post this content in other places. pair that with the fact that reels are all only 1080 and you're going to have to crop by 50% if you're in 4k anyway to fit the frame or only by 10% if you film horizontally, i just haven't seen a really good reason to film vertically native.
