I remember being active around the time when someone created a short-lived clan/group called surf revolution(s?) to protest something that SV apparently did wrong. I joined rev first, then got into SV. But idk, I didn't really care about all that clan politics stuff, i just simply loved to surf. The clout from being a part of velocity and the dopamine haze from finishing really hard maps was my jam. Shame no one really kept track of world records on a larger scale back then. I would've really loved to chase WR on surf_ny_platinum or surf_ny_advance. It really annoys me that i remember so little about that time 💀 i just remember having the time of my life. But someone i knew back then might remember more. He became really active around the time i quit. Haven't talked to him in years, but i remember he went by the name miggo or miggo13. Idk how YT decided to show me this vid 😂 for me it's kinda the same but still a different story: I came to love to surf in CSS and spent sooo much time there at the same time and age as you. I remember my brothers making fun of me. I surfed everything, was never an talent but I was utterly in love with surf-rpg at some time (maybe 2005-2007?) and remember that the community there was just amazing. This felt like really unique game and I always dreamt of a game of its own for rpg-surf. And then all of a sudden the rpg-ranked-surf community got destroyed bc of servers allowing instant rank ups and nobody was trying to play serious anymore: Bottom line? I think I never experienced the same joy in Games as this early surf time, trying to surf on advanced maps or just go in rpg maps and freeze stab noobs all day long ❤

As someone who usually surfs t1-t3 to chill, I can really appreciate the level of effort it takes to get *that* many WRs on maps that difficult. Caff is a beast.
I like the format of this video. i thought the brief little intros/explanations about the gamemode, community, and how to get started/play the game were done nicely. They flowed well and were intuitively integrated to introduce relevant concepts throughout. However, massive missed opportunity to add 12 seconds and make the length 13:37

Caff is absolutely the greatest current player in surf. I'm probably just a boomer, however, but I don't think I'll ever be able to consider anybody other than Sinsa the GOAT.

Great video. It is always so nice to watch videos on movement games / movement mods because of their storied pasts. You can only hope for videos on lesser known mods like kz or tf2 jump or even conc, but to see any sort of content for movement mods is fantastic
i used to play a lot of surf in css when i was like 12 years old in 2010, i remember playing a lot of surf rpg deathmatch on a gfl server, back when epic radio was a thing lol. i was never very good at the competitive side of it, but then again that wasn't really why i played it, i preferred laid back combat surf. it's really cool to see people are still into the gamemode and are able to even build careers and make money doing it.

I think me and many others have encountered both Caff and Levi through ESL's Surf and Chill where they are hired to make those videos for them. Which is highly requested and demanded by many
Caff left VG (initial server) because the ranking system was rigged. It rewarded people for getting a bad time and improving. If you started with a good time, you weren't rewarded that well for improving. I knocked him off #1 points on VG before the point system got reset and the name changed to Dualism. For comparison, I could barely clear tier 4s. I just had a lot of maps completed with dogshit times and improved them. Caff's rival at the time was SyStM. Those 2 set all the records for VG if they were on.
esl surf n chill and surf n flex going to bring a lot more light to the surf community I never knew about caffrey or levi before that or that surfing this high of a skill ceiling
never heard of Caff won't lie, surfed on KZG from 2017 onwards, honestly I think Levi has a lot of popularity simply because he holds SR's on a lot of the most played maps on KZG, that's the only reason I knew about him anyways.

Cool video about a community I know almost nothing about. Watching the footage I was most impressed with the maps ( i cannot really tell what makes a surfer good) . Could be an interesting video about who comes up with all these maps , there most be some kind of science how to build a map that allows for skilled players to shine.

I remember surfing back around 2006-2007, in the Australian surf scene too funnily enough. It's amazing to see where surf has come since then, it kind of blows my mind that it even exists at all still. If anyone cares or is interested, the best surfers back in that time (in Australia) were probably 2 guys who went by the names 'ptad' and 'demon'. Although back then nobody timed their runs, it was more just about being a good surfer in general. Something back then that really separated the best surfers from the rest was being able to do surf the map leet_turbo backwards, and quickly... So much has changed since then...

@@Repster I was having the idea of doing the same video that you made, but in 1.6 about some kz players, I still want to, but I am short at resources, like demos, videos, sources, interviews, history... but I still want to make these videos that I took inspiration from Wirtual. I've been wanting to make these videos for like a year or two but I never could put things together, the research, all the demos to source, the players themselves... I want, I really want to make them but they proved to be very difficult to make.
Kinda strange and off topic but this really reminds me of the TF2 jumping scene. Have long since stopped playing, but back when I did, there also was a technical 'best' player and the guy at the top of the leaderboard. As a new jumper I always thought the guy at the top was the best, and it wasn't until people explained how the 'best' player would achieve WRs with orders of magnitudes less attempts than the guy at the top of the leaderboard. This makes me itch to jump again
Thank you for documenting these achievements. I would argue that surfing is as mechanically challenging as Rocket League, and has taken hundreds of hours of my time. It was always amazing to watch WR’s with the chill music goin in the background. Hopefully surf can be restored to its former glory in CS2.
