I'm a bit late to this... But i wanted to share my story. It was Spring and I was playing surf on CS Source from home at the sweet age of 17. A message pops up and the girl I had a huge crush on told me she was single and we starting speaking that afternoon. It's super vivid and clear in my brain, the skype messages popping up, the map I was playing on at the time, me constantly failing at surfing because I kept checking her messages every 15 seconds, grinning ear to ear. It's now 11 years later and she's my wife, and she sits with me sometimes when I play surf maps.
Hi Mariowned. I’m from South Africa. I thought Id share my surf story too. In late 2004, my mother was diagnosed with an incurable form of breast cancer. The doctors gave her anywhere between 6 months and a year to live. Turns out she made it to about 14 months and passed away in 2005, two days before Christmas. I’m born in 1992, so I was 13 at the time (and our “summer holiday” is over December so we start the new school year in January). That same January I also went to high school, just having finished primary school. I lost almost all of my big group of friends (going to different schools), was “initiated” (depending on your school- this is pretty brutal, mine was no exception, it’s basically mandated bullying of the juniors by the seniors), and my mom who was my absolute anchor and the greatest joy every afternoon going home, was taken from me. She would watch me play CS, being a gamer herself (although she only played MMOs) and only ever encouraged me in life. She was hands down the kindest woman I have ever met, had a PhD in Criminology and spent weekends working for the church. She was an incredible person. So 2006 was an impossibly difficult time in my life, and I often contemplated suicide. Coming home every day with no mom in my house was crushing. But one day coming home from another horrible day at school, my (now) brother in law, with his PC next to mine, told me to come play a game of surf with him. I had no idea what he was talking about, and he had just discovered it that day. When I first played, it was egypt. It was impossible. “How could anyone do this?”, I thought. I got so frustrated, but addicted at the prospect of getting it right and getting closer and closer every time. Eventually we became really good and we were having so much fun. Every single day I couldnt WAIT to get home so we could surf together. Obviously the pain of my mother passing was never entirely gone, but your surf maps and the game mode at large helped me cope in a time Id rather have died. Thank you so much, Charlie. And happy birthday.
I'm really sorry for your loss and I know how inappropriate this question is considering the context, but I always wanted to ask someone from the southern hemisphere this question: I noticed that you put "summer holiday" in exclamation marks. My question now is, do you guys down there consider "your" summer to be the actual summer or not? When you hear the word "summer", do you think of December to February or of July to September?
Hello, i'm from Argentina. As someone from the Southern Hemisphere, i think of summer as the months between late November and the first week/two weeks of March. It was always incredibly confusing to me that Christmas and the decorations around Christmas; what was considered "Christmassy" were built around snow and winter in general, since here Christmas happens in Summer. @@megapilo_ I am kinda late for this, but search for "counter strike how to make a surf map" and watch the videos by GorangeNinja. hope this helps and if so, good luck with your map! :D
I was feeling nostalgic recently and joined a random server in CS 1.6 with surf_ski_2 hosted to see if I still can make it to the secret room many years after. As soon as I joined, I heard a bunch of kids talking in the voice chat. Surf was always big in Russia, and the new generation keeps it alive to this day. Mariowned, thank you for everything you did! Surf will always take a special place in my heart, it's a huge part of my childhood.
You are an absolute legend mario, I don't even want to know how many countless hours I've spent surfing while watching tv shows, movies, talking to friends etc. Friendships were built and lost over those maps, tv shows were binged. Surfing truly is a great passion of mine. Thank you so much for that :)
Oh, thanks a lot for replying 😄 didn't expect that! I've made a few surf maps myself! If you're interested, you can check them out here: gamebanana.com/members/submissions/maps/1241752
I used to work as a net cafe attendant in our shop. CS:GO is installed on the timer PC to keep ourselves entertained while we are at our post. But due to the fact that I prioritize customers more than the game, I don't play competitive in order for me not to have a fixed focus. I casually play Surf maps which kept me occupied for shifts. I leave them be when a customer comes in to pay their usage fees on their rented PC and get back to my idle post, which is surfing. Surf maps made my shifts most of the time. I just wanted to thank Mariowned for the invention of surf maps. *And BIRTHDAY GREETINGS TO YOU MARIOWNED!*
@@Micc648 it's much more of a perk. the only thing is that..people tend to go before they pay, and you get no profit from it. in addition to that, you get to work 24 to 48 hours in some cases.
@@Mariowned Hey mariowned, i wanted to pass along my thanks for making these maps, i remember playing a ton of surf maps on tf2 and hl2dm before i got into css.
I have so much damn respect for you, the countless hours i've spent trying to complete surf maps was some of the most fun I've ever had in CS:GO. You've changed mine and many others' lives for the better, I can't express my gratitude in words alone. Thanks man.
That means a lot, destro. Helping people through gaming and animation is something I feel I am meant to do. I am working hard to start my own studio to be able to pursue that full-time.
I loved the 1.6 surfing community back in 2004/2005, played a ton of that and kz_(jumping) maps. Had no clue this 1 guy made all the classics. Thanks a lot for all the fun times I had with friends!
This comment will be lost forever, but thank you for truly being an inspiration and such a legend. ( I really do mean legend) surfing as we know it is a big part of cs and for me is the reason I started playing in the first place. I'm not the best but it is still some of the most fun times I've ever had on cs. Thanks for the 2000+ hours of fun. - Dillon
One of the only reasons some of my other friends started surfing as well, hopping into newer surf servers and meeting big youtuber like Fitz and RaccoonEggs and talking to them means a lot, yet a lot - and I mean a lot of them don’t even know the year it started. I’m like you mario, I barely am good at surfing, but it’s extremely enjoyable once you learn it. Thanks for the hours and good times.
Mariowned thank you for doing this. Thanks to surfing i found friends online when i had none in real life. It was a great step to make my social life and interactions better and now thanks to surfing i have big group of friends online and in real life. You are awesome and (I cant stress this enough) this community appreciates you so much!
@@Multiple-Sclerosis I am aware bhopping came before cs but it was just a mere "hold spacebar" while in cs there is precision involved in timing your jumps, strafes, preforming longjumps. As someone who has been surfing since day 1, I can safely say the community owes a lot to this dude. Surfing has brought so many people together, and its just so much fun. Surf_ski_2 is one of my favourite CZ maps
Thanks for creating surf, mariowned. It's been a great long ride and I've had plenty of fun with surf. Built my own clan and community that was around for about 10 years (Nightmare-Surf Clan/Community). Lately I'm mostly only following all the surf-channels, watching the newest records and newest maps created. Every once in a while I end up trying a map myself. It's amazing that even within the "surf-mod" different kind of surf methods evolved. - skillsurf (nowadays mostly "wr-surf") - tricksurf - combatsurf There's even different maps for all of those. Like I said it was a fun ride and I want to thank everyone who has been a part of it. Not only mariowned for creating it, but all the people I met along the way and all the people who improved, added and contributed to surf in varios ways, such as creating maps, working on new surf-mods or creating "wr-surf" servers, tricksurf servers and so on. Thanks. :) - adrian (raz0r) and nowadays f0rky
So nicely put, Adrian! You took the words out of my mouth. I try to make sure I'm not the only person thanked for surfing. So many people have helped progress surfing to what it is today, and I am so thankful for you and everyone else. Thanks for everything, cheers! 💜
I'd be lying if I said my eyes didn't water while watching this. My first time playing on a surf map was back in CS:S in 2004 (when the game came out and I sucked at shooting people in the game). I will never forget it. Thanks for MANY hours surfing man.
Surfing is amazing, many times growing up I'd load up CS and surf as a means of meditation i'd say. It was just something about it and listening to music that was so satisfying and not stressful. I still enjoy to the day and surf in csgo, great video and thanks a lot marioowned for this entire genre! Also happy birthday :D
*Thank you so much Mariowned* (as well as 3kliksphilip for creating this video and many other great ones), Personally I have been playing movement like game modes since 2016 and have spent thousands on them, Your surf maps are a foundation for many other map creators and people like you need more credit for your influence and care for them. CSGO has so much potential when it comes to its movement mechanics and you helped shape not only surf but mapmaking and gamemode creation as a whole. I respect you immensely

Thank you for your influence on the community sir! By your accidental discovery, you changed the game counter strike forever! It is so nice to finally hear who created surf maps as I never bothered to check and see myself. Respect and Love to you! - From a little 19yold boy.
Surfing was one of the greatest things that ever happened in CS custom maps. I have surfed with friends since the beginning of the servers opening. I loved this story. Thanks for passing it on.
Must've spent two years solid through highschool, mastering surf_lt_omnific... That map is precious, and I hope your egypt map will be a new revelation for me @Mariowned Through a stressy semi-pro CS career, shouty teammates and hurtful losses - surf was always there to keep me calm deep into the hours of the wolf... Happy birthday, and a warm cheers from Denmark. surf_lt_omnific in CSS - FTW!
Mariowned I spent thousands of hours surfing with my friends on all your maps. Surf Egypt gets me in the feels. Counter-strike has always been something special in my life and I just want to thank you for contributing to what made counter-strike so magical. You deserve the recognition for your accomplishments and the gratitude from the counter strike community. 17 years later Im still surfing. much love brother.
Surf took my life from the saddest moments, when I had little hope left, to one of the happiest I have ever been. I met so many good friends from the servers and the times I had made me the best I have ever been. Honestly from the bottom of my heart, thank you Mariowned.
TJ, this absolutely warms my heart. I am so glad surfing has helped you, and I hope things are going well for you now. I am always here for you if you need to talk 💜
Marriowned I have never clicked on a video so fast. Your gamemode that you created, you should be so proud about. I have nearly 15 hundred hours put into your gamemode and it has really helped me in some very difficult times in my life. Some times where I really wanted to give up. It's hard to pinpoint why, maybe it's therapeutic, maybe it helps me think when I really didn't want to. I am out of that place now but you were a huge shadowed impact and I can never thank you enough.
Avril, I am so happy you are in a better place, and I am so sorry you had to deal with that. This is the reason I came back to mapping instantly. I want to continue to make surf maps for people to escape their problems. I am building a toxic-free community to offer a safe haven to gamers and non-gamers as well. I am glad surf maps helped you
Came back to watch this vid after i forgot about it and it popped up in my "Recommended" feed. I remember back in i'd say 2013 when i first started playing CS, and especially when i first started to do surfing maps. My buddy from high school brought me into a Surf RPG server and i had no idea what I was doing. After countless hours and finally getting the hang of it, it stuck to me and I still play surf to this day whenever i feel down and just wanna talk to people and have a fun time. So Mariowned, if you see this [Even though its been a year since the Video's release] I honestly thank you from the bottom of my heart man. The amount of good times I've had and the people I've met through this gamemode has seriously changed my life. Crazy to see how far it's come and the following it has and even crazier for me to say that I met long lasting friends that i still talk to till this day. You're always going to be a legend in my book.
This guy basically defined my childhood Summers. I spent countless hours on surf_ski_2, ended up mastering the map to an insane degree, and though I know he didn't make that map, I have to thank him for the whole genre.

I’ve been surfing on KSF. One of the largest surfing communities with the best surfers around. I started surfing in 2012 just for fun and started doing it competitively in 2016 and got my first world record the same year (surf_amateur_v2b) and kept going till the point where i reached top 10 in the entire world and having over 29 map records. I don’t think i wouldve been the same without surfing. I have always wanted to know if mariowned knows about KSF since its a very obscure side of surf generally speaking but id love to be able to talk to him one day. Much love from KSF
That's insanely impressive! I hear about KSF all the time, and I shout you guys out when people ask about good surfers. I play KSF videos on stream because the runs are so crazy. A huge thanks to the KSF community for taking surfing to new heights, literally.

Hey Mariowned if you still read these I want you to know that I tought my friend how to surf in CSGO the other day, having to explain how it works to someone else made me realise how complex the mechanics of surfing really are. You've really created an art form! She pretty much gave up on it but I'm gonna keep practicing like I've been doing for years!

Thank you for the memories you helped create. I love you man, buon fortuna mio amico
I remember my friends showing surf_ski_2 just about at age of 8. Continued on to surf till age of 18. Have gone through some good and bad times. More of the good one's, of course. Thank you for enriching my childhood.
I don't know if mario will see this comment or not, but i just wanted to say that, as a kid, i loved surfing a lot... I would come back from school and surf for hours.. I was amazed that how did someone even get the idea to make such diverse and unique maps that i could never imagine of.. Even though, i have moved on from counter strike now, but i will never forget what joy his work and ideas gave to me.. An absolute legend.. I wish that he continues his work and continues giving people that same joy we all had back in the days.. Much love man!
Better late then never. When I was younger I needed an escape from my real life. The bullies, the parents that don't listen and the teachers( I often misinterprate a sentence which made me fall tests while I understood everything of it). Surfing helped me just to zone out, relax and get calm. I needed this back then. Thanks for this! ❤️
Hey Felix, I'm sorry you had to deal with all of that. I am very glad surfing helped you deal with everything. I hope things are going great for you now
Personally, I love surfing in TF2, because Rocket Jumping adds a whole other element to the game. Haven't played in a while, since my laptop has been on the decline and I'd need to reinstall a source game, but I remember the hours I've sunk into maps like utopia and air_arena; they're easily the reason TF2 is my most played game on Steam. After watching this I might get something set up to play Egypt2.
Back in 2011 me and my friend would rush out of school and compete with each other in some 'race to the end' surfing maps, the loser would have to pay a "coxinha" for the others, good times indeed, thank you for creating this Mariowned. Cheers from Brazil.
I've spent more hours on surf/bhop than I have actually played the game. I think that it's really fun. Playing the more iconic csgo maps, kitsune and utopia. Thank you to that guy.

No kidding. Looks like a completely different game. It's absolutely stunning!

- tricksurf
- combatsurf
