That bit about stopping when you're telling a story about your trauma so you don't retraumatize yourself....is a piece of advice that would have saved me a lot of tears if I had heard it sooner.
I just started seeing a therapist for the first time and I've been sort of uncomfortable with her approach. Her intake forms asked for a lot of really heavy information and then during the first session, without ever talking about why I was there or what I was hoping to get out of therapy or even establishing any kind of relationship or rapport, she just started going down the list of boxes checked on my form and asking me to elaborate. So I sat and talked about a million aspects of childhood trauma for two hours with a complete stranger who seemed like she was just trying to get the facts down and wasn't even asking me about how I felt about any of it. It was bizarre and exhausting. I was there because I was experiencing extreme stress at my new job and having a hard time managing my emotions during those periods of stress. I've now had two sessions and all we've talked about is trauma and the personalities of my parents and I don't know why. I'm sure it's important to discuss but it's not helping with my work stress. If anything, it's just giving me more to be stressed about. I really appreciate the timing of hearing from Dr. Kirk not just once but twice recently about how it's a bad idea to just jump straight into things like that and I feel like it's validating my suspicions that this isn't going to be the right therapist for me.
@@ginao6810 I decided to stop seeing her. She wasn't listening to me at all and the last straw was when she said she didn't believe I could be autistic because "autistic people don't have empathy". Yiiiiikes. I've had two more therapists since then but I feel like I haven't found the right one just yet. I'm still trying, though. @@queenoblivia far out. As someone on the spectrum I promise you WE HAVE EMPATHY! And since I wasn’t diagnosed (with ADHD) until last year at 34 years old, it’s quite possible you possibly are on the spectrum too. I don’t know how old you are, but when I was a child ADHD was for unruly boys. Girls who excelled at school and couldn’t possibly have that. I’ve never been able to find a therapist I click with that I can see regularly. But I have had good experiences with NA group meetings. That has been the most effective form of therapy in my life, partly because I find people who have experienced similar things to me, but also because it’s free and available multiple times a week. It’s not the same as one on one therapy, but I have done a lot of work on myself through that. Not sure if anything like that applies to you. But maybe there’s a support group that’s relevant to you in your area that you could go to until you find a therapist you click with. You deserve support.
I love that he emphasized that an "unruly" child with bad behavior is a symptom of the real problem. It took me way too many years to realize that my parents were the problem and not me. It was constant complaints of my behavior as a teen, meanwhile my dad is the stereotype of a Middle Eastern dad wherein "if you're not first you're last" and my mom responded to my eating disorder and self-injury by calling me a "psycho" on a regular basis. Not shocking that, as an adult, I barely talk to either of them.
That sounds awful. I came to that conclusion after watching Supernanny. I remember watching it on tv in the 2000s, and then binged it for weeks in the pandemic. Every episode started with unruly children. Jo came in and sets the parents straight, changes rules that aren’t working, puts in some better strategies, and the episode finishes with children who have learnt to behave themselves. When it didn’t work, it’s because the parents gave up on the strategies too soon, or when it got tough. Their ego’s were bruised and they got defensive. Yes it’s a formulaic tv show, and I’m sure there are cases where this would work with wider diagnoses of both parents and children. But most of the time you fix the parenting and you fix the kid’s behaviour. Many parents put so much pressures on themselves, and many do the best they can. But others look at the child without looking at the child’s key stimuli - their parents!
I love love love Dr Honda educating us on re-traumatization if the story is told without self-soothing, self-aware precautions set in place. Also I’ve never seen this show before so I appreciate the recommendation!
I started to do "friends therapy" with people in my life last year. Those folks are not in my life anymore, but it was fantastic because I learned about those relationships more. I love that I had the space to suggest it and hope more people normalize it :)
This is one of my favorite episodes! Each character is disturbed in their own unique way & the show capitalizes on it with hilarious hyperbole. I was delighted to see Dr. Kirk did a reaction video to this.
I don't get it. I like how dark it is, that's great. Modern Family and Parks and Rec are better written and funnier but they aren't dark enough, and I can't relate. Fleabag is the only thing that ticks all the boxes. It is the perfect show.
When Dee was repeating tell me I’m good over and over it reminded me of a time I was shopping and a toddler was being yelled at by his mom. She kept saying “you’re bad” repeatedly and the poor child was begging her and saying, “no, mommy, I, not bad, tell me I’m good, tell me I’m good.” I’ve never wanted to rip a child away from a parent more than I did in that moment. She just refused and wouldn’t even say that whatever it was he did was bad but that he was good and she loved him. Sigh, some seriously eff up their kids. This was in public, I can only imagine what she’d say in private.
One slight note about what you said at 50:40 ; I doubt Mac's family would actually care... Unless the lawsuit was purely for money and not actually caring about him.
This is my favorite episode of the entire series because it perfectly distills the comic personality of each character by juxtaposing them with a straight man. Perfectly concentrated always sunny formula.

NO WAY IVE ALWAYS WANTED TO SEE YOU REACT TO THIS EPISODE! I’ve watched always sunny back to back so many times now and being a fan of yours now for over a year I’ve been so so curious about what Doc Honda would say about this!
I appreciated Dr Honda’s remarks on the Charlie episode. I saw a therapist once after I found a abandoned, damaged stuffed animal. For some reason I broke down sobbing, took it home and stitched it up and cleaned it while crying the whole time. I didn’t know why and I fully expected the therapist to tell me I was completely insane and she was just like… “ Ok, , what’s the problem? You fixed the piggy? You didn’t hurt yourself or anyone else.”
You should react to Never Have I Ever! At first it seems like your typical teen romance, but it actually delves a lot into the main character's anger and grief over her father's death
Oooh, I LOVE that you started reacting to classic TV shows Dr. Kirk! Perhaps if you have time, you could analyse Friends next, especially the famous " we were on a break" break up. Thought I think you would have to start with the disinegration of their relationship a couple episodes earlier to get the full picture (from s03e11 to s03e15), but all together those scenes cannot be more than 40 min of footage. Another great show to react to coul be How I Met Your Mother. Or The Office! Love your work!
The old series called "In Treatment" on HBO is pretty compelling. Gabriel Byrne plays a therapist in private practice and each episode centers on one therapy session.

Kirk, a long time ago you listed off your favorite/influential fictional female characters and among Brianne of Tarth and others I can’t remember right now, you listed Dee Reynolds and I always wondered the story behind that!
This was amazing! Also one of my favorite shows. My request: can you review the pilot of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend? It's about a woman who has panic and depression, runs into her boyfriend from when she was in high school, feels limerence ("like glitter was exploding inside me!") and abruptly follows him from NYC to a small suburb in LA County. It's a musical comedy and has many, many mental health-themed songs. I think you'll enjoy the music videos "This Session Is Going To Be Different" (sung by the therapist who wants her client to confront her issues) and A Diagnosis, which is about the protagonist desperately wanting an accurate mental health diagnosis. The show is available on Netflix and all 130-odd music videos are on RUclips. Enjoy!
Your explanation of retraumatising was extremely helpful, and has given me the understanding of why I have just ditched therapists! I hope I can find the right fit one day
I would love to see a reaction to any part of Crazy Ex Girlfriend, but especially S3E6 Josh Is Irrelevant. I am really liking the commentary on comedy!

I love how they fight over dishes and make it funny. All too often couples fight over dumb things like dishes. Me and my friends always say you can either laugh or cry about sad things and I'd rather laugh 🤣
hey doc! Just curious, I’ve had 2 great therapists so far. My first therapist relocated but I was fortunate to get transferred to an equally awesome and professional therapist. I crack jokes sometimes, Ive been told I have a colorful way of describing things. Its my way of coping I guess. Anyways, I noticed something both therapists had in common. They try really hard not to laugh when I kno for a fact they want too! Sometimes they cave and we share a good laugh together. Been wondering if this was a therapist code of conduct thing and maybe I shouldn’t crack jokes or try to get a laugh outta them? I don’t feel like I’m over the top with my humor in a way it overshadows the session. I haven’t ruled out the possibility that my jokes are just awful, either. Figured I’d start here lol
I'm not Dr. Honda, but I am a therapist. :) I practice in Canada, but we have no definitive code of conduct around laughter. Personally, I use humour with clients (but not all) and it's typically based on the relationship and the motivation behind the humour. Sometimes clients will use humour to self-soothe when they are emotionally dysregulated, in which case I'll create space for that (or use it myself, if I know them well). However, I might offer feedback if I get the sense that humour is being used as a form of avoidance instead. That's not necessarily a bad thing because it might be an indicator that we are headed into territory that is too much for them or they need more support and preparation in embracing uncomfortable feelings. Also, I know it can be scary, but you have every right to ask your therapist questions about their approach, what is/isn't appropriate, and to tell them how you feel when they don't laugh. In fact, it's a great thing to bring up with a therapist whom you trust and know will validate your request for feedback and clarification. Bringing a question like this and relevant feelings into the session might offer an explanation, a corrective experience, the possibility of having the need met, or it might mean finding a different fit. (For the record, I also think I'm hilarious and want a therapist who chuckles alongside me, but will keep me focused if I'm trying to dodge a heavy topic or emotion, as well).
I have made mine laugh while i was telling about an incident at work and the way I mimicked my boss, was so funny to her, she told me I should consider stand up comedy 🤣 and I wasn’t even trying to make this funny. But friends also told me, that the way I deliver a story is sometimes too funny. Haha but my mind is the same, I think there is nothing wrong with laughing. Also for a therapist. 😊

Enjoy!
IM SO HAPPY YOU DIDDD THISSSSSS OMG THANK YOU DR. KIRK you made my day!
Was going to say this, too! Would be great to get his take on this representation of BPD and the therapist scenes around her diagnosis and group therapy.
@@ccentenrun Did you even want the same episode?!? It stands out to me because it depicts BPD, the associated stigma, and how the label affects her support network. Can you think of an episode that you would recommend more?
I would also love to see his take on the ethical dilemma of wanting a jet ski ;)
@@VS-re1sr I've thought often I'd love him to do the whole series, ha! I think that might be unlikely, but I really like how they developed her diagnosis over the seasons. As a one-off episode, that one would be perfect--it has so much in it to comment on and learn from.
OMG? I never knew I needed this! Thank you!!
Wow I actually learned a lot from this. I loved this one
It’s one of my favorite shows too! I can’t believe this is happening. Now I need to rewatch all these episodes too especially since The Office is off Netflix.
I applaud Dr. Honda for keeping a straight face. I love IASIP. Definitely would love to see more of this.
OMG, I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU DID THIS?!?!?! How cool are you?! My husband and I are currently selling our home and all prospective buyers will have to deal with The Nightman Cometh poster on our wall! 😂 LOVE this show!
One of my favourite episodes of Sunny. Thank you for doing this episode. Absolutely amazing.
This is so fun. I discovered your podcast last week because you guested on another I follow. I then spent yesterday looking up your Love and Mercy and John Lennon eps.(bce I love Beatles and beach boys content).
Only for you to review my favourite show !! :-)
Hahaha thanks for making a reaction video on this episode
Love this show!
Ohh snap! Love this show.
Omg this is my favorite as well! 💖🌺
Oh I was so hoping you would cover this
Danny DeVito was in "One Fled Over the Cookoo's Nest" film with Jack Nicholson.
I love how they fight over dishes and make it funny. All too often couples fight over dumb things like dishes. Me and my friends always say you can either laugh or cry about sad things and I'd rather laugh 🤣
One of my favorite RUclips channels reviewing one of my favorite shows?? And it’s over an hour?? Dr. Honda, you sir have made my weekend!!!
Yesss!! Thank you Dr. Honda!!
@@spatty918 thanks! This was helpful :)
‘Idk what it says about my personality’ ... lmao .
This is also my favorite show! Been watching for over a decade.
In addition to Reno 911 and the State Kerri was in a 90s indie rock band called Cake Like as well
Omg! I'm so down for this!!
Dr. Kirk I have loved your videos for awhile now and have found them to be immensely helpful in my own therapy sessions and in communicating with my own family. That being said.... this is the most excited I have ever been for a video of yours!! I can't believe you watch IASIP!!!! This made my day! ☀️
This makes me so happy omg favorite show in the world I didn't know I needed this reaction but omg
*YAYYYY!!! This shows hilarious (90% of the time lol), I'm really glad you're reacting to it!*
I wonder how Kirk would work with a client with a cognitive impairment?
Dr. Honda is a super fan. Don't blame him, Sunny is hilarious.
Yesssssssssss I loooooooooooove this episode
Can you do the Curb your Enthusiasm therapist episodes? Both season 6 and season 9 have really funny episodes with therapists.
Ummm yes for video on this. It's such a good episode🤣
Deanna Troi’s therapy sessions in TNG would be cool
I would have never thought it’s always sunny is dr Honda’s favorite show!
56:30 my read here is the therapist determined a long time ago that dee is kinda beyond her help so she’s given up and decided to just milk dee’s money and nothing else
32:40 I feel it should be noted the Charlie has a lifelong addition to huffing.
I was so shocked to find out that you were going to react to IASIP! 😂 I love this show. Can’t wait to see how you react and love that you love the show.
Oh man, the way Dr. Honda pinpoints what people "exhibits" right away - I'm sure he can turn ot on and off but now I'm nervous if i ever met him lol!
Favorite show lol love this crossover
Yes! love this show and I'm glad to see those outside of the Philadelphia tri state area are also into this show :)
"It's very generous." I quote that at least once a month.
I’ve been watching and learning from your videos for almost a year, but this is my first time commenting. Thank you for reacting to this episode of It’s Always Sunny. I think Monk and Psych would be interesting to react to (they’re both series that have now ended).
The noise I made when I saw you made this video oh my god this is amazing
you talk about taking precautions and going through a prep period before launching into a traumatic story. i am wondering what that kind of preperation might look like?
omg one of my fav showsssss
wow I love this! haha please if possible do king of the hill someday?
