Good to see your Dad again. You can tell that this man's got tons of experience in thinking ahead and where retention vrs. force on fabrications. Always enjoy seeing him and got a nice peak at JR's Grand-dad's old wheat/corn hauling red truck in the background from a video awhile back.
Yay!!!!! guest appearances by Daddy Ross and the elusive Jared. The family that accomplishes things together, stays together. God bless flyover country. Daddy Ross needs his own channel. "Old School Common Sense with Ross.
Please be more careful with your winching. You need to spool new cable onto the drum under load in order to prevent the upper layers from embedding themselves into the lower when under full load. Also, I was cringing the whole time you had your hand right next to the winch fairlead while spooling it in. That drum doesn’t just instantly stop, but, no matter what, all it would have took to mangle your hand is a small grab/slip and pull it into the fairlead. PLEASE be safer than that.
I think we've all had one of those moments were you stop and think "I almost died". Mine was on my motorcycle when a suddenly overtaking car missed me by only centimetres. Then when you realize it could have been all over right then and there, you really appreciate the fact you are (still) alive.
My favorite part about all this is the fact that so many people are helping to get this simple winch together it's nice to see everyone help with JR's goal.
Like a couple other guys recommend, trailer box on the tongue with a couple batteries. Then your trailer plug should have switched 12v power to one of the pins. Wire that to charge the trailer batteries. If you are really trick get a solar trickle charger so it's always ready to rock.
Snatch block not a block and tackle. Make sure you use a winch dampener when ever using a winch, place as close to the hook or d shackle that’s attached to the car that your pulling it will take majority of the force out of the rope and gear attached to it.
@@WatchJRGo and make sure you wind that winch rope under load or it will tangle and bind the rope on the first heavy pull. You don’t need that smaller bottom tie bar behind the fair lead there only for shipping.
so what is the tongue weight rating on that hitch mount 1000 lbs. according to the northern tool website. even with figuring in 3 times that number for a failure point i would have one other major concern with 350 lbs. rating on the receiver hitch part. then multiply the height from the mount to load the fulcrum point. this needs some extra safety to protect you if it launches all of the winch towards the load being pulled. this may never fail but just to be safe add two chains that hook from the trailers safety chains to hitch/winch mount chain points. just a suggestion not trying to be a keyboard engineer.
Nice to see pros using pro tools doing work. And Jared getting some camera time. That thing is a beast! After it's all said and done it's gotta be worth at least $500 for a trailer winch mount. Wholesale. Found at O'Rielly's for $1200 but guaranteed not to break, ever.
I was coming to comment that I wish JR's dad had a channel. I love old, experienced, practical engineers. I am trying to become one, but I'm only 25 years into my career. I'm officially the President of Jr's Dad fan club.
I did very similar to both my trailers. Best decision. I can use my winch on either trailer. The winch is 10 years old and still looks new from being indoors. I had to mount my solenoids and fuse block in a small tool box that I carry with the winch and it also holds all the gear. Winching cars is a game changer
Your dad's story and shop are really amazing. I checked his website out after he wore one of his work shirts in a video a while back. I would like to see a video with him telling the story of how he got to where he is today.
Put a 12volt plug outlet into your number, then you have truck bat voltage all the time.Used to put them on tractors to operate lift gates back in the day
Nice job JR but a little to much work.I would have mounted the reciever where you did except I would have added a plate to bolt to the triangular shaped aluminum tread plate on top of the frame rails. That would stop the mount from trying to pivot on the front of the deck and would not have needed all the reinforcements underneath. Still need some outside like he's doing but not nearly as much. Just my two cents worth. Really like your work and your work ethic. You need to hang out here in East Tennessee for a while with a good handling automobile. We've got a lot of awesome roads around here.
At 10:00 I loved it when your Dad quashed your bar stock idea and recommended 3/16 walled square tubing or heavier. He was so nice, gentle, calm and supportive as he left you looking like a dumb ass. What great parenting.
Must be nice - first you stop your dad from his work - then you get to pick out free metal- then you get one guy to pick the metal up then get a fabricator to weld and cut everything! Man - your dad IS smart though!! I can see where you get some of your knowledge from.
Lol that fabricator is his brother, and I did half of that off the clock. Also, it’s dads trailer so he definitely has a say in what and how stuff gets put on.
I run power to my 10k trailer winch from my truck. #2 cable from the battery through an 80Amp solenoid with a switch to turn it on. Then you can also have jumper cables to plug into the back of the truck if you need them. It works great. Then you never forget the jump box at home or run it out of power.
On my truck I ran two cables back from the battery, have a quick disconnect at the bumper and enough cable to reach the winch. As long as the truck is running have plenty of power for the winch. Also plan on making a front mount for it and run cables there as well. Doubles as a jumper point - once I make up a set of jumper cables with the quick connect on them. Plus most pulls you will not run it as long as you did to spool the line on.
I'm not sure JR should have anything to do with winches after seeing that video of him literally almost losing his head to a snapped cable. By the way if that synthetic lead snaps it will also take your hand or leg off.
A lot lol. We do a majority of our work in aerospace and petroleum but we’re pretty much all over the place doing all kinds of stuff. The shop is an ASME pressure vessel fab shop.
I don't know what that winch draws for power, but if the truck runs dual batteries, it would be plenty to run power from the front truck batteries to the hitch and install a power pole quick disconnect. Just upgrade the grounds at the front batteries to the chassis and run a 1/0 power wire back (Maybe upgrade alternator charge lead too?). Ground to the frame back there and mount the quick disconnect near the hitch.
I have the same winch. Haven't even got it installed yet. Doesn't fit in the space of an average 13k or smaller winch. Can't wait to see the power of the 17.5k. Mounting it in the fifth wheel position of my truck.
Your close to heavy duty, made my wench mount 30 years ago with 5/8” plate, and 10” H beam from bridge scrap build, but yours is a good build much better then a lot on here
why not use the cable that came with the winch? All the parts are rated for the unit and will hold up. Your bad experience might have been due to a mix of unrated parts. You didn't show it all installed on the trailer. I was waiting to see how it looked.
For power, mount an AGM battery, in a battery box, under your bed of the truck, Then wire it into the truck’s system so it trickle charges, have an extension of winch power lead permanently wired to that battery and accessible at the rear of the truck so it can be pulled out and plugged into the winch. Then, if you get to a situation where you need to do constant pulls, you can start the truck to have the alternator help keep the amps up.
Would be a good idea to weld a brace to your receiver and bolt it down to the A-frame. That will greatly reduce the twist force on the end of the trailer.
Instead of a battery box, you could run an Anderson Plug set up to your truck. But then you’d have to use the same truck to tow with. Ah shit, this is gonna backfire on me.
Change the trailer plug out for a true 7 pin. That will let you wire a 12v charging circuit back from the alternator. now mount a small battery box on the tongue plate and install a good deep cycle battery in it. Wire the winch to that. USE A ON/OFF SWITCH, and remember you will need to wire everything direct because no ground in aluminum.

It’s flush. It’s a combination of things. One we’re almost at the capacity of the machine. Two, the springs and dampers that are supposed to push the part off are worn out from years of use. Three, we probably weren’t using enough lube.

Dang that plasma cutting table is awesome. Great to have that shop available!
You are so blessed to have a machine shop on standby. But even more blessed to have a knowledgeable great dad like that. I wish mine were still here.
Your dad is cool as hell JR. Nice work on the winch mount better overbuilt than under-built any day of the week.
Cuddos to your dad and brother for the awesome help! That metal muncher didn't even sound like it was struggling
I'm jealous that you have such an amazing father. I like every episode that hes in. My dad taught me absolutely zero about anything.
I got to say you are blessed to have such great friends and family that can help you with your projects.
You and your Dad working together: Priceless!
You have officially outgrown that two car garage. Time to get a larger shop JR!
Josh, Gabe, and JR could definitely benefit from it. Add some space to rent to Hoovie.
Always a great video when your Dad shows up!
Big shout out to your dad and his crew for helping you do it right!
I'd recommend a Trailer Box with Two Batteries ran in Parallel!
And a solar trickle charger!
TK Skagen .. That's what he should have made. A box with enough room for batteries and hold down straps..
Can't wait to see you use the rig! Any video with Dad is a win! Nice.
If I remember, you need to load your winch with about 1k lbs or more in order to spool it correctly. Might think about respooling that guy
Always love watching JRs dad go. He knows his stuff.
Did I miss an update on the John Deere 420C? Would love to see that.

Looks like his dad's shop is the hook-up of the century. Very heavy tools!
What about the electrolysis between steel and the aluminum on the trailer?
All parts will be painted. What you are referring to is called galvanic corrosion though.
I love when dad makes debuts.
You can only debut once -- I think the word you want is cameo, as in makes a cameo appearance...

how did that machine make those holes in the steel plate?

Seeing how the winch sucks so much power you might want to mount a battery box with a big honking semi truck battery in there.
