Even though the shear force on those grade 8 bolts is sufficient, I would recommend doing a minimum of 3 bolts. If one fails due to some unforseen circumstance, you want two backups.
I did about the same thing , but mounted mine so the winch was all the way off the front of the trailer. I only have an eighteen foot trailer , so I need all the room. I also used Anderson quick disconnects on my jumper cables running forward to my trucks battery. Works well , good job on your set up too.
I would use some red lock tight on the bolts and a receiver pin that locks as a deterrent for the thieves. I could cut the wires, pull the pin and be down the road in 30 seconds, otherwise a very clean install.
Sir, the camera movement made my head hurt but when you held steady, there was no more visual pain. Viewers told me that if I'm going to move the camaera around with quick movements, ensure the camera lens is NOT in the ZOOM magnification; just take it out of ZOOM mode and then move the camera around, then the negative visual affect is less significant. Sorry for the camera critique but wanted you to learn what viewers taught me. I enjoyed your entire removable winch build. Your winch set-up and fabrication looks great. I hope your trip to SC for a vehicle was successful and hope you didn't have to travel too far hauling your vehicle(s). I experienced SC highways and the roads were a bit uncomfortable. Thanks again for the great removable winch build/share. 👍🏽🤠 06/08/24
I make these set ups for my trailers. So my advice to you is you did everything correct except the winch should be inserted into the receiver not from the trailer surface side but the other side so the winch is "floating" in the air in front of your trailer surface. Sometimes every inch of trailer space is needed. Now if needed you can remove the winch while the cars are on the trailer.
I'd have moved the winch up towards the ball and leave it mounted all the time. Weld a cross member and bolt winch to it. Can add a roller to trailer to keep cable from dragging.
Thats the ticket. Winching a car up, blocking it, winching another car up, blocking it, then removing the winch, then pushing both cars up, blocking them, tying them down....thats gonna get real tedious quickly. That said, hauling two cars or a vehicle that needs to clear the winch all the time is probably a rare situation. I would still have the winch be removable regardless of mount position. Stay gold.
Thank you for recording this video. I have a trailer that I want to put a winch on and I actually jumped the gun on getting a bracket welded onto the trailer without doing some research on other parts I need to make it work for us. My trailer is similar to yours with a 2 to 2 1/2in lip on the bed of trailer. I like the receiving hitch you installed and how you cut open a space for the rollers. Plus I want a storage box for battery and straps. Nice work John. Thank you.
3/8 inch c channeling will house mount/legs if u weld at front corner vertical if u can understand then u can remove the winch assembly and keep the housing.
Only thing i wander is if you've winched the first car on their forward enough that you have to remove it then are you going to winch the second one on their? Maybe put you 2 holes halfway down the trailer so the winch can be moved to behind the first car to then load the second or mount another hitch receiver in the middle but i worry about lowered cars
I've been following you for a little while now and I figured I'd drop a comment saying...I really dig your style and your vlogs are awesome 👌 👏...also...do you want to sell the Diplomat ?
My winch works on the hitch I put on the front of my truck it also fits in the rear hitch in back and also on my trailer pull a pin and move it were it will work the best, use the quick disconnects, and when Im done I lock it up in my tool box out of the weather till its needed again.
I use a HF Dual Hitch Extender P/N 69881 to mount my HF APEX 12,000lb or a smaller HF 2500lb winch into the upper 2" receiver location. I don't have the trailer jack center as on your trailer, which would interfere with this straight line installation.
Even though the shear force on those grade 8 bolts is sufficient, I would recommend doing a minimum of 3 bolts. If one fails due to some unforseen circumstance, you want two backups.
Bro that looks badass and clean.
Thanks man!

great video. im def gonna go this same route with my winch

Great detailed
Presentation
Thank you!
honestly good job man.! id personally use more than 2 bolts though to hold my receiver on for the winch. 4 at the least and 6 to be safe.!

Just bought a 7x18 hauler this video helped me alot thank you for sharing by the way very nice 24 ft hauler!!
Thank you David!
well done-very clean welds, and smart idea going modular
Thank you!
Exactly what I needed for my winch to be mounted and removable.
Been thinking about doing exactly this. Now I'm going to. Thanks for the video.

Nice idea making it removable with one pin. From now on, its easy.
Super neat solution dude! And your welds look amazing!!
Lots of guys and gals need and appreciate ideas for our stuff, even trailer winches. Nice video and thanks.
Great idea here! Nice work.

Excellent job! Clean install
nicely done . hello from New Hampshire.
I really like this idea! When it’s time to upgrade the winch on my trailer (currently a hand crank winch) I may do something similar.
Great video!!! It inspired me to do the same, thanks for sharing!!
Very nice. Gave me some good ideas! Thank you! 😊
cool idea! can’t wait to see it put it some work!
A removable one was definitely a good idea
really nice setup!
Thank you!
Watching this video and I'm from/live in NH

Oh snap you finally winching
Great job .. I think I solved my problem..
That’s great! Thank you!
Great job 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Badass winch might have to attach one to miata some how
Good video I am going to do the same thing but for on the floor of my barn so I can pull cars or my tractor in so I can work on them
That’s a great idea!
Good Job
thanks
I don’t think I’d mount a 12k winch with 2 bolts.
A 1/2 grade 8 bolt has a sheer strength of 14,000 lbs.
I’d fillet weld around it.
I gotta remember this. @@aarondowney4648
don't forget to buy one snatch block.
Nice !!!!

Awesome
Is there any issue with the cable rubbing on the deck of the trailer when pulling up a low car?
Or.... put you some ramps on the front of the trailer to allow the front of the car to go over the winch
4:40 should have just used a bumper mounted receiver from harbor freight.
Lemme guess, daddys old tow rig?
I might have missed it but you did cut the channel out or was it already open ? Where the winch plate is mounted
My trailer was already open in front of the winch plate!
@@JohnLudwick see my isn’t open like so I may make mine open like that but thanks for the reply

Yo what size trailer did you use for the double cars?
It’s only a 24’ trailer, but the cars are small enough to fit 😂
@@JohnLudwick thanks bro. Good video btw
What size battery do you use?
And if you haul 2 cars again the winch is in the way… should have moved the winch forward.
Runva EWL12000?
another video of a dude who spends all his time NOT actually knowing wtf his plan is. HINT: Figure stuff out THEN make the video
4 grade instead of 2
