  • Dr. Nemeth got asked a question today: Is gum disease contagious?
    Dr. Joseph Nemeth is a #Periodontist in Southfield Michigan and he is educated on the transmissibility of periodontal disease.
    "Yes, gum disease is contagious, mainly through saliva." Dr. Nemeth says. If someone kisses, shares utensils or shares a toothbrush with someone who has periodontitis, they can infect the other person.
    What causes #gumdisease ?
    Exchanging saliva with a person who has periodontal disease is a major risk factor for contracting gum disease. Other factors are genetics, oral hygiene, and dental plaque.
    Gum disease treatment has evolved over the years and the most recent technique to reduce gum swelling and gum disease uses a laser called LANAP to disinfect the pocket and cause reattachment and periodontal treatment.
    drnemeth.com/lanap
    Just because gum disease is contagious, doesn't mean that everyone who is exposed to the bacteria will get gum disease. Some people are resistant and others are susceptible.

    Have had ortho, at 45 years I had one spot of recession(probably from overbrushing). A friend told asked if I wanted to share a spoonful of soup, I said no, then he told me that if I didn't share a community bowl of soup it would be insulting to the culture, and so I relented. 24 hours later I FELT acute recession and I went to the dentist and prodded him to. His gums were so bad that he proceeded to have laser surgery. Mine weren't bad enough to need that at the time, but have gotten worse and have recession in several places in a matter of months. Had SRP and antibiotics, but still progressing. I believe it's from the introduction of pathogens I didn't have before.

    • @josephrnemeth
      @josephrnemeth  4 года назад

      You may have gotten oral pathogens by sharing a utensil with someone who has gum disease. Scaling and Root Planing is a great option. However, you have to do a really good job at home with your home care. Otherwise, the parasites may just come right back.

    Hey dr, I am having this issue with one of my bottom front incisors. I am breaking in my second retainer to get used to it. I have already broken into my other retainer just fine. When I start to break in the second retainer I started having problems with ONE bottom front incisor. I got my braces off about a week ago. It’s not just cold sensitivity but it hurts to touch the tooth, it hurts to put the retainer on and to take it off, it hurts to bite down, etc. It feels like if I got hit in the mouth and my tooth was almost knocked out (I used to grind my teeth as a child). It’s only that one tooth, I don’t get it. I can’t get into my dentist until September. I don’t have any cavities. It also really hurt when they popped the bracket off of that tooth but it didn’t bother me until I started breaking in the second retainer. Any suggestions?

    • @josephrnemeth
      @josephrnemeth  4 года назад +3

      Hello Paris. I would recommend that you go through your entire orthodontic treatment first. Make sure that you take good care of your teeth in braces! That is a very important part of this process. You want to make sure that you keep your teeth, gums and braces as clean as possible. I actually have a video that explains how to do that in detail.
      ruclips.net/video/tkHn3PbOTd4/видео.html
      After you are out of your braces, then I would recommend researching and taking a closer look at the laser treatment. I hope this helps you!

    How do you use a toothbrush if you have gum infection? I’m also thinking I could’ve gotten this from eating cheese? I ate some cheese that tasted like it might’ve turned last week and that was when the worst of all of this hit me could it be connected?Do I need to sterilize my toothbrush after every brushing or even use a new toothbrush every time I brush my teeth!?

    • @josephrnemeth
      @josephrnemeth  5 лет назад +3

      Yes! The waterpik is one of the best things you can cause to combat periodontitis! Those black triangles are places where bacteria and food can lodge, so make sure you clean those areas thoroughly as well.

    Hi, I have a night guard first time last late Dec 2020. I was told not to use a toothbrush to clean. Just water and rinse and put it in a container. Always use every night. ( I supposed to have it age ago. Bad..) Also I was told to rinse water on it then put it on when u go to sleep. I always put it in my room. But it turned yellow and some light brown. Later I left it in the bathroom with a container since July. I rinsed it and put it in the container. Too wet still there so. Later I noticed it turned some black. I went to the dentist and another different hygienist told me to use a toothbrush. Huh? So I went diff dentist a few weeks ago and learned I needed deep cleaning. I have appts upcoming on Nov 22 and Dec 2nd. I am so nervous. Now question how I get bacteria in my gums now? Was that night guard with black. I thought it would be like mold.. How can I remove black from the nightguard? It is not even one year old yet!!!!
    Now I need to know what is right?
    What to do? If my night guard is something wrong with color. Need alert? An I supposed to wash it or rinse it using a toothbrush without toothpaste? What is different? I brushed my teeth with toothpaste then I put my nightguard on with water to wet. Was that a bad reaction to the nightguard from toothpaste? Was it caused a color change? Or bathroom air steam / wet in containers cause nightguard wet and black or bacterial? My family each person use shower there and steam. Maybe my container with my night guard is wet at all times. When I got up. I pulled it out to rinse and out in the container. I use my water to swish my mouth... To eat my breakfast.
    Some people brush their teeth first thing in am. Then eat breakfast.
    Or eat breakfast first then brush your teeth. Which is supposed to do or either way not matter?
    I didn't want to eat food with taste toothpaste. Taste awful. Right?
    I am curious
    Sorry, bec I never have deep cleaning guns all my life before and do not know what caused it?
    I need to see Orth. To see if I need a brace bec if the TMJ push shifts my teeth apart in the front. That hurt. So new dentist times me first deep cleaning to see guns health first before Orth. Really? The previous dentist didn't tell me except little gingivitis. We focused on crowns...Time delay... Long overdue 6 months cleaning bec of crowns.
    Please explain what to do with the night guard.
    Please let me know. Thanks 🦷

    I suffered terribly for decades until I was diagnosed with H Pylori infection. A 10 day course of Clorithromycin/Penicillin and Pantoprozole not only dealt with my stomach but also successfully treated my oral problems. I am still being treated for what they believe is IBS ams I have found diet and exercise to be more effective than most of the medications I have tried. Should H Pylori detection be considered an option when testing for Periodontal disease? In my case they appear to be related. All I know is, I no longer carry around the most foul taste in my mouth and my gums no longer bleed.
