Fixing the leaks is THE MOST IMPORTANT! A friend of mine attempted to rebuild a trailer and sunk a lot of money into it. She thought the leaks were fixed, but we were in a drought at the time, so she just plowed forward. Then it rained...and leaks were everywhere! She ended up scraping the whole project. I don't want to be a downer, just want to forewarn to you to ensure the leaks are fixed before doing all of the cool interior design projects. I wonder if any leaks could be behind this upper cabinets over the dining area, for instance. Just make sure you ask the experts about sealing everything. Best of luck to both of you! I'll be excitedly following your progress! :)
Just started watching, and im hooked. As someone who is in the market for a used vintage trailer to renovate, and who also has very little experience this is an honest and open accounting of the trials and tribulations, and I cannot tell you enough how refreshing and entertaining it is.
In 2014, we bought a 1977 Terry travel trailer. We thought we would just needed to paint, make a few changes...... We ended up taking it down to bare metal, having to replace about 95% of the wood. I even had to replace the axle. By the time we were done, the only thing original was the aluminum skin, windows and the exhaust fan that went over the stove. We didn't have any holding tanks of any type because all of the originals were broken and couldn't be repaired. We used that camper for about 5 years, and towed it about 7500 miles. In 2022, we sold it and bought a new 5th wheel so we could have self contained plumbing. When you are finished, it will be worth it. The good news is he looks like a lot better carpenter than I am.
I know it's going to be so great when we're done! We're already talking about all the places we want to go with it and I can't wait! Thanks for the encouragement. I love hearing from people who have done this sort of thing and it turned out awesome!
@@amanda.outside make sure you check the wheel bearings and leaf spring bushing before you go anywhere. The previous man replaced the axle for a reason. Test for 2-3 days before going out on a long trip. Safety
Good job. Demo is hard and gross. Putting things back together is far more motivating cuz things start looking better. Just make sure you redo every seal on every seam and window. Trust that nothing is still good at this age of a trailer. Mine had a leak and I ended up putting my foot through the floor cuz it was only patched and not fully fixed by the previous owner. But I liv d that trailer. It was my home for six years and it served me well. I know you will enjoy yours once it’s done.
Loving this series! Thanks for putting in the extra work of editing the videos so we can follow along. I love the cedar paneling! Just don't forget to give your open shelving a lip or you'll have a yarn-fall every time you drive over a bump! lol!!
Amanda , it's a lot of work ,,,,But you are doing it with Nick ! When finished you both will have something special. If you become a million air and able to buy a huge camper it won't mean as much as this one. THANK YOU FRANK FROM MONTANA...PS. this is your history you guys will look back on this in the future...........
I do believe this is going to be such a rewarding project. That's what's keeping me motivated! Putting so much time and effort into this will give it so much more meaning for us. I'm excited for all the adventure we can have. Good to hear from you Frank!
Don’t give up, you two. This is gonna be … a project, but you are gonna LOVE putting everything back together in a way that serves your needs, suits your taste and will serve as vessel for SO MANY memories. Hoorah!!! I also love the vintage flower fabric. 😁
At least you guys didn't find a squirrel's storage space while demoing! My husband had hundreds of acorns (and other bits) drop on his head when we started taking down ceiling panels in our trailer! 😮😂 Loving the progress you guys are making, it's going to look great!
Wow! The progress you guys are making!! Next episode will be you guys revealing the finished and decorated result. Lol. You guys move quick. Seriously though, so excited to see what you guys are going to do next. I love the look and smell of cedar!
Oh my gosh, seeing that orangey flower pattern brought me straight back to the 1970s! I was in my 20s then and lived in Montana, it was some of the best years of my life with many outdoor adventures. Like someone else wrote, I'm completely invested in your daunting project and am rooting you on.
Super excited to watch your renovation! One thought, you might want to use the insulation foil tape where your foam board meets the wood. It will provide a vapor barrier to help protect against moisture/ condensation from creeping into the wall and causing mold/mildew.
This looks like a ton of work and hella hard on a relationship but I'm so invested in this now! Good job so far. I can't wait to see it when you get done!
Make sure the frame is solid. Probably need to run new plumbing and all new wiring. You can spray mold to kill it. Plug in power might still be a nice option for a fan or for cooking. You might be able to put a thin layer of foam board over the insulation for added comfort. You did. Lol. Cedar siding looks cool.
I love watching build videos. Even though you are not having fun now, you will be so proud and satisfied once it is completed. Keep it up! Unfortunately, a barebone strip-down should be expected since it is an old vehicle(?). Unfortunately, most people don't care for their things, vehicles, and general living space unless they are very meticulous, so there's a higher chance that you will find deterioration and potentially dangerous electrical hacks. If everyone took meticulous care of their things, there would probably be less waste.
Look into "Dicore butly tape" to help seal around windows and anywhere two pieces of metal come together. Also, reconsider the electrical situation. When you decide to sell your camper, (and you will want to sell it to move to the next camper project. ) Having 30 Amp shore power will be a selling point. You don't have to use it, but I don't know of a solar unit that would run a coffee pot or toaster. I am not an expert on solar, but to the best of my knowledge, all you can run are lights and charge phones on it if you can't spend a great deal of money on it.
Very excited for you both on this new adventure! Fun to see Nick's personality bubble over on this channel. May I suggest since it appears that you have the opportunity to create your own kitchen design you also look into the Omnia Oven (if the original oven had to be pitched, too). It's a fun way to cook in the camper (while also offering heat in the colder months). It'll be a bit of a diversion from your cast iron cooking but I bet you would love the challenge of creating great meals in it. I suspect you'll still be doing tent camping but it you appears to have lots of disbursed camping by you. Give yourself guilt free time to enjoy this wonderful way of seeing the country. Oh, yeah, now that you'll have some space, don't forget to carry a bug zapper.
Well old campers are like old boats. Water is not their friend. It can destroy! It will fun to watch but I think you should have saved yourselves a lot of money and headaches by getting a newer camper. Plus a bathroom is nice especially in the middle of the night. Trust me you are having fun right now but you will be looking for a bigger, better camper in the future. We are on our 3rd one and dreaming of our next.
"She said it would be easy, she said it would take no time at all" 🤣 That's how all projects start! But think of the stories you can tell friends around the camp fire Garden hose could be a form of anti-chaffing, to stop the wires from rubbing out
I knew you would end up stripping everything down 😂 I’m still excited for you guys! You have so much experience camping that you already know what you’re going to need and want in your camper 😊 time and patience, you guys got this!!
Love the cedar planks. We have cedar ceiling in our cargo trailer conversion and love it. It’s held up well for 3 years now. I think I finished it with water based poly but not certain. Enjoying the vids.
The demo so far looks great! I'm sure it's a lot of hard work but when you're finished, it'll be so rewarding!! That saw blade on the ceiling was definitely weird lol. Loving the cedar planks!!
All the people concerned about things flying off of open shelving… I have open shelving in my cargo trailer conversion. I just put hooks to either end and put a bungee across. Bungees come off when I set up camp. Nothing falls down during travel👍🏻
I know this would not be vintage but have you considered Raptor lining the outside of the trailer, they have it as a tintable version and you could do a two tone like it is now. It would definitely fill in all the little unknown holes in the aluminum that are potential water leaks. If not the whole trailer consider the roof. White would help with the heat and it is really tough stuff. good luck, I look forward to seeing the continued journey.
Lot of the hard work behind you now. Are you going to try to emulate the original set up or make it modern and more comfortable/roomy/livable inside? Some of the older airstreams have been renovated with a Scandinavian open/streamlined look. Can’t wait to see the finished project!
What has saved my camp trailer from leakage is: Liquid rubber RV sealant. It goes on like a paint and drives like rubber. I put it on my horse trailer, my camp trailer, and around the sky lights in my home. It works amazingly. Just a thought for you guys.
Wow, you’ve made quite a bit of progress. One upside about having to remove most of the original interior is now you have your blank slate to build how you want to. Really good choice with the cedar it looks great and smells amazing. It’s a lot of work but you’re both nailing it.
Oh how exciting! If you can build into the kitchen one of those small portable ovens that has multiple uses (ie oven, grill, air fryer, rotisserie. This would be super useful and compact with so many uses ❤
So excited for you and Nick. what a big project but in the long run you were going to get so much enjoyment out of it. The older I get the more I am thinking about a van. It’s just me so a van would be perfect. I have thought about a teardrop And other trailers but I think a van is what I will end up with eventually. Good luck you guys can’t wait to see your journey on this camper. Cheers.
Things to keep in mind: cabinets are what is holding the trailer together. We washed our cushions and let out in the sun to dry (cushions are expensive). Amazon makes covers we got leather (fake). The way to stop the leaks is to start on the roof (quad or lap sealant). Everything needs to be sealed. I check ours yearly at the minimum. Things shift when driving so I am always checking. Water is your enemy.

Dude these videos are SO good! The editing, the project, the vibe--10/10. So stoked. Also, you should frame a cutting of the flower fabric!

I’m invested now! Come on Part 3!
I definitely think every camper should have a yarn shelf. With a cedar lining, it couldn’t be more perfect.
Yeah, why was it a joke…?😂😂
The couch cover you loved ,Amanda, is the colors of my first wedding in 1973 😂

GREAT VIDEO AMADA AND NICK!!! EVERYTHING IS LOOKING TOTALLY AWSOME!!!! I LOVE THE PROGRESS!!!!
I’m so excited to see part 3 and the future of your camper! Very cool how much you guys have restored it. Preserving history.

Oh my gosh, that's crazy! We definitely got lucky that the frame was in good condition for the most part and no signs of squirrels! 😁
You should definitely add “shore power” provision while you’re at it, if only to make it very easy to charge your solar battery when needed.
Agreed! We have both especially for resale.
Repurposing that sawblade into a little wall-clock for the van would've been quite funny 😂
Wow! The progress you guys are making!! Next episode will be you guys revealing the finished and decorated result. Lol. You guys move quick. Seriously though, so excited to see what you guys are going to do next. I love the look and smell of cedar!
Oh no. This is going about as expected. Good luck with the restoration.

Wow. I’m so enjoying the trailer videos. I can’t wait to see the “after”. Happy trailing…🤟🏻🥾🏔
Oh ya, love, love, love, the music!!!!!
I feel like I just watched an episode of a show on HGTV. These videos are so good!
Super excited to watch your renovation! One thought, you might want to use the insulation foil tape where your foam board meets the wood. It will provide a vapor barrier to help protect against moisture/ condensation from creeping into the wall and causing mold/mildew.
The outro song 😂 You two got this!
The excitement is high! I see it in Nicks eyes and that smile.
He gets to build things and buy new tools so he's definitely loving it! 😊
Your camper is already looking great! Can’t wait to watch the next episode :)
Thank you so much!! We're slowly but surely making progress! 😊
You're making awesome progress in this video. I can't wait to see how it all turns out.
Remember that open shelves will launch everything off while you drive…yarn would be ok😂
Such a good point. I’d hate to take things off the shelves before driving and then put everything back.
Stay upbeat & positive! When u finish, u will be so happy & chuckle about the set backs. ❤
Oh. Oh yep. To the skeleton. I agee, very pretty flowers. You guys are doing great.
So interesting to watch this unfold.
It's going to be so great, you will remember these early days and laugh. Be proud!!!!
It is gonna look awesome!! Can't wait to see the end results.
Yessss on the yarn shelf 🙌

Putting all my coins on it! It will be fabulous!
Wow, you’ve made quite a bit of progress.

It’s a lot of work but you’re both nailing it.
Loving this series!
Love this new series. Great music choice. 😂
I love the cedar planks! That was such a pretty and functional addition! I am so excited for y'all!!

Yay! Demo day done, it’s not fun and you end up finding all sorts of new problems, but it’s worth doing right. ❤
Whoa, you guys moved up from tenting. Congratulations! So did I, to a teardrop.
So excited for you and Nick. what a big project but in the long run you were going to get so much enjoyment out of it. The older I get the more I am thinking about a van. Awesome work guys!
wow you guys don't muck around. Well done on the progress. I especially like the tongue and groove paneling you are installing, looks awesome.
We are so happy with how it turned out! It's exciting to finally see some progress on the rebuild. 🤗
You guys rock.

Good video. I'm cured on wanting to do my own build. LOL Demo works like a lot of work.
😂 I'm learning that there are lots of ups and downs on a project like this!
I already know this will be a great series
Wonderful job!
We have an old 1979 boler trailer which seems to be kinda the fiberglass version of what you have. I see so many similarities in the layout. I love the way the space opened up in the front there by taking out the top cupboards. Hoping that you keep some kind of stove there but even if you don’t you can still use a camp stove.
I am so excited to see how this project goes. Oh and you better make sure to get camping sometimes too this Summer
It’s looking great! Good job, guys. 👍
Good cop story 😄
One thing that I wish I had is a place under roof to work because I had to cover it up after every time working on it. I find that the most common place from leaks are corners and around windows. Running a dedicated ground wire for each lite is better than depending on the sheet metal or frame for the ground.
Don't forget to reseal the whole roof outside!
Big job but will be custom to your guys liking 👍
Cheering you guys on! Such an awesome journey… Thanks for sharing and can’t wait to see the final product! I have such great memories of camping with my dad in a trailer that looked a lot like that one! thank you as well for bringing back some great memories!
Love it! Keep it up!
What you are doing has been done many times with old trailers. The roof should be caulked and coated, thats one option and another is to glue a sheet over the whole roof. There are a number of materials you can do that with. I'm from Michigan the birthplace of camper trailers. The roof you have know has a number of leaky seams that are nearly impossible to patch.
The rusty saw blade and bracket was from a colman lantern being used , it was a heat shield home made , what ever works .....
Get a battery operated fan. You can use the same batteries from your tools.
