      Honestly, in the current generations (aside from Lele) with how powerful and common the Dark, Ghost and Steel types have been getting I didn't think Psychic isn't even THAT good of a type unless you remove those.
      I genuinely think Ghost is much better type than Psychic in pretty much every way and Psychic Terrain is not saving Psychic types (exclusively Singles). Ghosts are better offensively and defensively but Ghost is stupidly broken. Who thought only having Dark resist Ghost was a good idea.
      It feels like there's soo many Psychic punishes around every corner at least in the current generations. Hell people wanted to drop Solgaleo into OU. Kingambit, Gholdengo, Roaring Moon, Meowscarada are such huge roadblocks. Triple dark is such a good strategy in OU right now. Maybe I'm just trippin though.

    I don't think Psychic is actually a particularly strong type, I just think Game Freak loves making busted Pokémon Psychic-types. Consider dual Psychic-types such as Starmie and Latios. It's not at all uncommon for them to forgo Psychic coverage entirely; unless they're willing to give up coverage or utility for Psyshock in later generations, Psychic is, most of the time, a "neutral coverage" option that doesn't actually have particularly good neutral coverage. Sure, Latios likes it in gen 6 and onwards to hit Fairy-types, but it would still rather be, like, a Dragon-Fire type or Dragon-Poison type than a Dragon-Psychic type.
    More often than not, being a Psychic-type is a defensive liability; the Pursuit weakness is crippling, and after Pursuit was removed, being weak to Sucker Punch, Knock Off, and U-Turn still sucks. For these terrible weaknesses, all you get in return is a Fighting resistance, which is obviously good but rarely makes up for its flaws. Additionally, the lack of resistances can make it a lot harder for mono-Psychic types to find good switch-in opportunities. Lots of Psychic-types feel like their Psychic typing is what keeps them in check, not what makes them broken. Imagine mono-Water Starmie, or mono-Dragon or Dragon-SomeOtherType Lati twins. Hell, imagine if Alakazam was a Water-type or a Fairy-type. Psychic-Types are not good because they are Psychic-types; they are good because they tend to have disgusting SpA and Spe stats with great coverage, boosting moves, reliable recovery, and powerful disruption tools like Trick, Encore, Thunder Wave, etc.
    Gen 8+ Ghost, on the other hand, is busted, and more or less a better Psychic-type. That nice Fighting resistance becomes a Fighting (and Normal) immunity, letting even the frailest attackers come in for free and blocking common priority moves. The U-Turn weakness becomes a resistance, further improving Ghost-types' opportunities to make progress. The "neutral coverage" that gets resisted by half the opponent's team suddenly becomes a lot better when it hits Steel-types neutrally, and becomes gamebreaking when you consider that the 2 types that resist Ghost get destroyed by Focus Blast. And despite this, the best Ghost-types still have all the offensive stats and distruption tools that Psychic-types possess, while being able to come in easily with their stellar defensive profiles and instantly threaten basically every Pokémon on the enemy team. This was previously """""balanced out""""" by Pursuit, but without Pursuit it becomes apparent that the typing is pretty stupid.

    • @AndrewRKenny
      @AndrewRKenny 2 месяца назад +19

      Big agree, Psychic-type mons get nasty abilities, movepools, and stat distributions a lot of the time that make them insane. Making a mon dual-type with Psychic (or God forbid changing them to mono-Psychic!) is usually a major disadvantage on paper and in practice.

    • @becausesakamoto5938
      @becausesakamoto5938 2 месяца назад +11

      Very true, I think about stuff like gen 5 OU psyspam which is so good not because the psychic type is overpowered (unlike Dragmag which is good because of how strong Dragon is), but rather because Latios is the best mon in the tier and Reuniclus and Alakazam both get Magic Guard to get around the huge amount of passive damage that they can just ignore. Like BKC said, the only reason they're not busted is because half the teams in OU have a built in Psychic check in PursuitTar

    • @wigglytuffenjoyer
      @wigglytuffenjoyer 2 месяца назад +9

      Very well put! Nowadays ghost feels like the best offensive type in the game, even over Fairy. Fairy has better coverage yeah, but there’s so much less in the meta that can resist a shadow ball than a moonblast. Ghost is just so spammable in a post pursuit removable era

      Ghost rapidly creeped into Psychic's realm of "bunch of things with extremely stupid stat distribution/ability/moves" with the addition of Dragapult, Spectrier/Calyrex-S, Gholdengo, Basculegion, Skeledirge, Houndstone, Flutter Mane...
      Kinda like Dragon was during gens 4 and 5.

      I agree, I think psychic as a type has gotten weaker and weaker as time goes on. Darks being immune + being weak to U-turn, knock and Sucker Punch are huge problems for the type. Ghost has the same issues with dark types but makes up for it with two incredible immunities and being the most spammable type offensively.

  • @aceguy1234
    @aceguy1234 2 месяца назад +25

    I agree with Ghost but Psychic really isn't that great of a type. It just happens to be given to great Pokemon. With Ghost and Dark being as free as they are to spam , Psychic is definitely hampered in these later generations. There are only 3 psychics ranked in the S/A tiers in SV and they're Slowking-G, Deoxys-S, and Hatterene. Deoxys-S's viability has nothing to do with its Psychic typing.
    Meanwhile, the top two mons are Ghost/Dark spammers and the most common typing among the S/A Pokemon is Dark. This video really should've been about Ghost and Dark. They feel like the most free types to spam by a mile.

It's well-understood, too, that Pokemon like Glaceon, Glalie, Vanilluxe, Beartic, Cryogonal, Regice -- mono ice-types with niche (at best) applications -- are really let down by their awful mono-Ice typing. Some of those Pokemon actually even have stat distributions that can function, especially because they're helped out by an ability. I don't know how much it is the types vs specific mons. Dragapult and Spectrier's Speed tiers are stupid. Aegislash was it's own unique thing. The biggest problem Psychics have incredible minnaxed stats and abilities for the time. Tapu Lele hits like a truck before the Psychic Terrain boost. The less said about Magic Guard Psychics the better.
    I do think ridding most of them of Trick like with the Toxic distribution nerf would help a lot. Like, Hypno and Mr. Mime aren't problematic with Trick but there's no reason Lele should 50/50 nuke or cripple your Chansey based on whether it Tricks or not.
    Gengar losing Levitate already brought it back down to earth, it can keep Trick. I agree Wisp is annoying on Ghosts but I think it's a fundamental part of how they play now and added much more depth since Gen 3. Remove Wisp from Ghosts and the only common Burn option becomes Fire, and that's problematic if you want to burn a Gyarados or Hippo etc.

    I'd say that Psychic is a bad type that is given to a lot of good mons, but the traits of the type themselves are really bad (defensively it's genuinely awful and I rarely see it discussed when it comes to the worst defensive types, because being weak to U-Turn, the Dark Toolkit and adding Ghost on top is so ludicrously bad, all for what ? Resisting itself and Fighting ? That's not that great seeing as Psychic is basically only seen offensively on Psychic types due to how dogwater the type is (there are some instance of mons using Psychic coverage, but it's like "I don't have access to a Ground move and I really want a move to deal with Poison types", it really is because there are no other options for you). You are only good against Fighting and Poison and in exchange Psychic is resisted if not nullified by like half of the enemy's team). Having a strong mon like Latios being Psychic gives a few ways to deal with them more efficiently, but for worse mons, being Psychic is a detriment at this point.
    Ghost on the other hand is just a busted type given to a bunch of really good mons

    I feel like something like steel types still resisting ghosts, gen 6 onwards would had helped a lot to make shadow ball spam more bearable. Still strong, they would get worn down and a lot of ghosts share some of the tricks strong physics have (trick, focus blast, etc), but ya know, I don't get why dark gets a new resistance in fairy to compensate for losing one, but ghost doesn't
    I think part of it is that ghost and physics also don't interact with the type chart much in general. Specially ghosts, with its resistance/immunity being only dark and normal types gen 6 onwards. With normals usually being rare in ou besided Blissey and such obviously. Dragons not only worry about super strong types like steels and fairy, but a lot of their general answers tend to have something like status or ice coverage as well
    Physics in the other hand have stuff like physock for their special walls, but also generally don't care *as much* for status, or hazards in magic guard examples. There's knock off, but even that is for utility in a lot of bulky mons still. Sorry for long ramble lol, just found this a interesting topic

  • @bohanxu6125

    I don't know man. I understand how ghost type can be strong... but in my opinion, psychic type is just bad by itself but carried by the stats and min-maxing of its offensive mons.
    Alakazam's stats would be extremely broken on an electric type. I hope someone would do some statistics like tiering/usage normalized by BST or some version of effective BST. I would imagine electric type, ground type, ghost type, flying type, dragon type... are a lot stronger than psychic type, even just offensively.
    (My guess is) You think pursue is preventing psychic type from rampaging is because 1. you focus on change instead of absolute power and 2 psychic tend to be offensive mon that are easier considered broke. Psychic type is so weak that legendaries with crazy min maxing like latios can drop to OU, together with pursue. After pursue is gone, you think latio is broken, but this is just a change that doesn't reflect whether psychic type is weak or strong. A mon with latio's level of min-maxing would be even stronger without the psychic type... like naganadel

    IDK about singles much after Gen 7, and even then I played BSS on console rather than OU until Gen 9 (BSS is bring 6 pick 3 singles, only restricteds are banned and everything is level 50), but for the longest time, I believed Ghosts were broken long before Gen 8. I mean, looking at the type chart reveals some true nonsense:
    - They have two immunities (Fake Out being one of them which is broken in VGC/Doubles),
    - They are only resisted by one type (a type that is more commonly used offensively than defensively), and only one type is immune to them (which again, is associated more with offense and isn't a great type to have in general), and
    - They cannot be trapped by abilities.
    I can attribute the reason why Ghosts weren't "broken" in the first 7 Gens to 4 things:
    1 - Ghost-type moves suck, and they suck hard. Shadow Ball is the most consistent special Ghost attack, and it sits at 80 BP with no notable added effects. The physical side I won't even look at just because of how awful it is. Moves like Poltergeist, Astral Barrage and perhaps even Tera Blast showed why this was a good thing (Dragapult did some nasty stuff besides Chien-Pao in VGC with Tera Ghost Tera Blast, IDK how popular this kind of thing is in singles).
    2 - Steel resisted Ghost until Gen 6. This made it so that Gengar and Rotom-A (in Gen 4) were held back in the STAB department considerably, imagine them with a Shadow Ball that Steel doesn't resist, I assure you Specs Gengar would be much more common like the Dragapults of modern Pokemon. Of course, nowadays this isn't the case and even STAB Shadow Ball is scary.
    3 - Besides Gengar, we didn't have that many notable Ghost-type attackers, the role which Ghosts are actually broken in. Gengar has been the only one for so damn long that I think people might have thought less of it as a Ghost-type attacker and more of it as "Gengar is Gengar" - it worked as a fast Ghost-type attacker, but since nothing else comes remotely close to filling its niche, that niche became something associated with Gengar itself, if this makes sense. Mons like Dusclops, Cofagrigus and Sableye had their moments as successful walls sure, but this didn't serve to show people why Ghost is broken. This changed in Gen 8 with the introductions of monsters like Spectrier, Dragapult and Calyrex-Shadow, and Gen 9 continued the trend with Flutter Mane.
    4 - As the video says, Pursuit was a thing. I won't expand upon this.
    But what I will expand upon is Force, because that's exactly what Psychics do in Doubles (and I heard it was a thing in singles this Gen too). If they are ever strong, it's because they abuse high stats with overpowered field effects and move synergies - Psyspam in Doubles means using a couple Psychics that learn Expanding Force alongside Indeedee-F, with the most common partners being Armarouge and Iron Crown. Armarouge is doubly nasty because it works in Trick Room with its low speed, but it can also be Weak Armor Weakness Policy bullshit - this is the quintessential closed team sheets BO1 cheese wincon.
    Psyspam is a type identity - one of the few to exist this blatantly even - which might seem like a good thing for giving types originality, but good god this is the most boring way to go about it. Your type has an identity, and that identity is click button while you can't be priority'd. Wow. Outside this, Psychic is just a middling type that you generally don't want.
    The singles aspect has been touched upon in the video. I won't talk about it again.

    This is something I've thought about a lot too, it's relevant for all of us trying to beat the best of the best after all.
    And I get you with liking what pursuit does to the game. There are crazy and interesting plays to make with it, and it'd probably be more healthy if it dealt neutral damage.
    Pursuit has a profound impact on the game, and creates viability for whole mons, not just to check psychics n ghosts but primarily sure.
    It's just that it's a bit unreliable, it's weaker when you are getting the switch out read wrong making it not completely broken against defensively stronger psychic types (rip espeon dying in one to se 40 bp) that can take at least one
    But it also creates 50/50 territory like that, on top of how it forces narrow play and gives a copium psychic/ghosts aren't broken
    And tbf some of them aren't broken, some of them are broken even with pursuit
    It in my eyes doesn't actually lead to anything healthy of skillful (except clicking the move on double switches or such when someone tries to force you out. Niche stuff)
    It's a similar problem I have with sucker punch and the raging bolt move.
    We all know about OU Kingambit that'd definitely be broken if sucker was a reliable stab but it isn't, so there's a copium way to play around it. Even if there's very little reasoning and a lot of praying to get it right.
    But sucker is more broadly an uncompetitive move, I main little cup and any sucker user high-key doesn't want to drop it because of how valuable it is in ho match ups. Either against frailer mons or set up. And that's also where the main argument I see for sucker not being broken fails, because the non broken way to use it is against choiced mons which almost no one does ever, and even then choiced mons are already restricted and can be played around.
    This makes it so that mons that would be broken and require to be checked by priority to be reliably played around, even if you are aggressive and willing to sac, stay legal despite having no proper counterplay. Defensively or dynamically/offensively
    And that just isn't fun.
    I'll take my 50/50 to win or lose but I wish it was 100% or 0%.
    Like this has a terrible impact on tiering and muddies the water in an unhelpful way

    Its not just the lack of Pursuit, Psychic and Ghost are the best attacking types not resitst by faerie, which is the dominant defensive type. look what like half the mones tera into. its like 80% stab tera or faerie.
    the best attacking type is in fact Dark which is only balanced with the faerie resist. its incredible how strong dark is and all the moves kinda suck. knock off works only once and crunch and Dark pulse have 80 BP. and are still dominant whenever there is a stronger attack it gets silly pretty fast. The big issue with Psychic is that Bug is a terrible offensive typing mainly used for stuff like Choice banded U-Turns. And it's the offensive Psychics that tend to specialize in hit and run tactics, so good luck finding the right timing to get one of those in on one.
    And when it comes to the walls like Lugia, Reuniclus and Cresselia, they're often designed to be able to switch in to big Special attacks, so stray Dark Pulse and Shadow Ball attacks as coverage moves are rarely going to scare them off.
    This leadsto EXTREME answers like massive buffs to Knock Off/Leech Life, and practical/literal immunes like Kingambit and Aegislash that just end up being too lopsided in as answers to be balanced in Doubles and Singles respectively.

    we have hit the breaking point of Psychic/Ghost balancing with Calyrex-Shadow

  • @HVST8935
    @HVST8935 2 месяца назад +1

    Calyrex-Shadow in Sword and Shield is probably up there for being hard to deal with. Pursuit was nonexistent so you could not punish it for switching. It had access to Trick which crippled Yveltal and that was the most common Shadow-Rider check. Yveltal would have to deal with Shadow Rider while holding a Choice Scarf and with rocks up on the field. Many variants did not out speed Shadow Rider with Choice Scarf either. Calyrex-Shadow could eventually break through Yveltal over the course of the game through a hit and run style and it did not need to worry about residual damage because it gained Heavy-Duty Boots from Yveltal. To make matters worse, it also had access to Baton Pass which bypasses Pursuit anyway. In AG, it could Nasty Plot and pass its boosts to Geomancy Xerneas, Kyogre or Dynamax Yveltal. While Scarlet Violet did introduce Terrestrialization, I've heard people say Calyrex-Shadow was harder to consistently handle in Galar due to it being far more unpredictable.

    I think Psychics were meant to be a weak type in the chart but the mons were all very strong. It’s why Lugia is a Psychic type because it was meant to represent its overwhelming power. It’s similar to dragon in that way.
    However as more mons got added, the less the Psychic mons were special in that regard. More and more powerful steel, dark, and especially ghost types rose up and psychics didn’t really bring anything that other mons couldn’t unless they were broken outside of their typing like the laties and the cell.

      Its kinda weird since the game started with Psychic being strong. Psychic issues in Gen 1 was something thats not "intended by the type chart" since its strictly meta oriented(in game Psychic hits most things SE. Meta Psychic is resisted by at least 30% of what your facing, sometimes 80% and Mewtwo makes Psychic sucks so bad the meta with Mewtwo averages 150 turns) and this idea lasts to gen 4 before they swap to Dragons
      It also kinda make me wonder what Dragon quest shit leads there lmao since the psychic counterpart in DQ isnt exactly.... strong

    I think Grass type was designed really well in relation to the type chart & how the type interacts with its resists & weaknesses.
    The type gets smacked by 5 types for SE damage & has 7 types that resist it offensively. The tradeoffs are very good though. Half of the type has access to sleep powder & leech seed. The type also has loads of healing moves & is one of the few types that deal SE damage to water types.
    Psychic is *really* hard to judge. Psychic usually had very physically exploitable stats & most were fast & frail attackers. Then gen 3 hit & started making more *very* bulky ones. Gen 4 had it right for both ghosts & psychics. Ghost always had the very good niche of being immune to crazy moves like Explosion. So, making moves like SR gave the type much more value because keeping hazards on the field was paramount. Most ghosts could also learn Will-O, giving them a way they could shit on pursuit users if they had the bulk & hp reserves (even though Will-o had a 25% miss chance at the time). Ghost had a valuable role outside of the type chart, & that was gatekeeping rapid spinners.
    Psychic on paper looks to be one of the best types logically, but was kept down by some annoying blindspots (the lack of fairy & reliable fighting type coverage made annoying blindspots). Ghost becoming neutral to Steel was a *really* crazy buff. Ghost type moves also have really annoying secondary effects, which make them even more low risk, high reward. Psychic having only two resists to it offensively, while giving many fighting & fairy coverage was a little overkill. Fighting coverage use met they were walled by opposing psychic types. Using ghost met that dark types could check them harder. Fairy coverage was the unneeded safety net they didnt need if pursuit got removed.
    Nowadays, Ghost & psychic have one major issue. Both types role compression. Shadow Ball is *extremely* powerful. It covers too much. Psychic is just a tad too versatile.
    I think this dynamic also helped reveal that fairy did *not* fix the type chart, but it just made the flaws more apparent.
