I have an iMac 21.5 inch, mid 2010 running macOS Sierra version 10.12.6
I forgot my password, found this video, followed it step by step AND THEN.. IT WORKED!!!! It totally worked & works!!

It didn't work for me on an old Sierra.
I got as far as trying to enter new password but an error came up:
"There was an error connecting to the Apple ID server."
It also did not ask for a hint for the password but rather just one line asking to enter password (not NEW PASSWORD, just PASSWORD) :(

I have El Capitan. I reset the password but log in password only not the keychain
It worked here too BUT.... it says that the keychain DIDN'T change so if a program needs the old password I'd have to enter that 😞

Manuel De La Cruz I had it fixed but I lost everything I had on the computer, the computer randomly decided to encrypt everything and then lock me out. $500 later I was able to reload all my files and get back to work.
Wat if it’s my guest user requiring a password and my admin account is not showing up..on the login screen thanks how do I locate it.. it let me change my admin password nut when it reboots the guest account still is on login requiring password thanks

Not everybody knows how to do that. There's no 100% protection anywhere.

I am quite desperate right now. It started with my MacBook not accepting my password anymore, then, when I wanted to reset it via Apple ID my laptop went black and showed a folder with a questionmark. When trying to start the MacBook through cmd+r, it doesn’t show any volume, which i could use :( so whatever I try. The MacBook will not start. No volume apparently :(
