Thanks, This works.
For M1 macs the steps are shut down your laptop, hold the power button till starter options load, then select options, then forgot all passwords and then after entering apple id password, you can find the terminal in the utilities.

I've typed in resetpassword and I get a screen that reads Reset Password If you can't log into your computer because you forgot your password, you can reset it now.
Then it asks me to select a volume to recover: macintosh HD, MacOS Base system and Macintosh HD - Data. When I click on them they tell me there are no user on this volume to recover. Any ideas?
