The thing about custom WB is that it's telling the camera to base it's entire color value on a picture of something that's pure white (or 18% gray) IN THE ENVIRONMENT IN WHICH YOU'RE SHOOTING. Saving a white photo on your card will throw off your wb, as it was shot under different lighting conditions. Something you can do is carry a white coffee filter in your camera bag or pocket. Simply hold it over the lens and shoot a picture aimed at the main lighting source. Works perfectly.
@izzygp327 yes you can do auto white balance but for manual thats how you do it. They do have white caps you can buy so you just pop it on and white balance a little faster.
Off course ! if your camera lets you custom white balance set up , Bring the cards Gray or White make it close to the lens until it covers all the LCD area , in my situation there is WB button press that and Confirm the change with Custom white Balance button. Remember you have to reset it when ever you have a different light situation , For instance recording in side room , and recording out side a room. Light is very abstract . With your camera (photo or video ) you are recording lights .I feel we have to grow our understanding of light when it comes to shooting or recording so always we would be sure what we are doing . In your camera the Kelvin value usualy expressed as "K" Shows you the color temperature value of the light . Do not confuse it with atmospheric temperature, that is wave measurement . For a video cameras it ranges from 1500K to 25000K. This wide range is inside your camera in most cases in three catagory Daylight- Tungsten- Kelvin . So custom white balance mean to bring the setting not precisely but better than those three categories closer to the real lighting , that is where you image or video recording looks by far better alright here you have a further link to read and help you self . Thaking this always practice until it become your aquared nature, Enjoy ! ,www.lightsfilmschool.com/blog/filmmaking-white-balance-and-color-temperature/29
You can buy lens caps with a white front for custom white balance ot just glue something white on one. You can also alter the white balance in Menu. Go to the 2nd tool sign and scroll down to WB Shift/BKT and press SET. You can then move it around for more green blue whatever.
At 7:40 look at your camera settings. You are still on AWB setting. You have to be on the custom white balance setting to set a custom white balance. You didn't change anything at all.
hey so I just want to change some photos into black and white i have the t3i. Is there anyway I can do this after the shot has been taken like is it an option on a menu? Also I notice the CA has a setting for this but its a grainy black and white and I just want a normal one. Thanks
Thanks for your help. I'm trying to photograph my son's Eagle scout ceremony in a church flooded with orange light from stained glass windows. Overhead lights are not bright enough to overcome the intensely orange hue. Any suggestions?
Hello, now every time I take a picture after it will show me all the information about the picture, like... flash, temperature and all that... how do I make that disappear? Thanks!
I was taking pix with my Canon T3I last night at an event where it was pretty dark. So would putting the WB on which setting take out the orange coloring?
for the best results "practice" setting your custom white balance and shooting manually before your next concert. At your next concert, zoom into 1 of the musicians faces, adjust your aperture until you get the face looking like you want it to and start filming.
I have a question will this setting work for taking crisp shots of dark skin tones taken on the beach , if not how can I set my camera to take clear white pics without ruining the shot or over compensating the white balance?
Lighting is tricky for me. I get in a rush and I get confused. I took photos and the pictures turned out too warm, or blurry. I didn't understand how the different functions work to adjust.
Okay. So I was visiting this video again as just picked up a used T2i. But, I noticed that your display screen shows the time, that FLASH is ON and has the words ISO and 400 above the ISO and 400 (redundant). So, what firmware was in this camera? I currently have two T2i's one with 1.0.6 and one with the latest 1.0.9. Neither display the time and flash. Thanks Creeker
Don't you need to set the white balance to "custom" after you go into menu and select the photo you want to use as the white balance? Otherwise I think you were still in AWB.
yes the camera sees the white in the environment its in and the lighting its in and recognizes it should be white and compensates for it. Clever really.
not sure if my quest is the same as the one asked below but if I do a custom wb from my white wb cards i bought and the set it, when I go to shoot my video will it know to use the custom wb or will it revert to auto wb. I am new to canon and trying to make the clearest beauty videos for my channe. any help would be appreciated, thank you!
You never moved out of AWB setting. Your camera said to set to custom white balance setting. You never did. You are still on AWB setting. You NEVER got a custom white balance setting.
that's incorrect technique you are using, white object should be placed where you have your point of interest (object which you wanna shoot) and it is enough to have white object covering only metering spot, not the whole photo ;)

You are aware that that last photo you took was in auto white balance, and not the custol you set it to, right?
@izzygp327 yes you can do auto white balance but for manual thats how you do it. They do have white caps you can buy so you just pop it on and white balance a little faster.

Can you delete the picture after you set the white balance?
@shorty414141 yes you do I am now keeping a white photo on my sd card so I can white balance when ever I like
I liked the singer's voice in the intro. Very angelic.
Is that the only way to do manual white balance? I have to carry a sheet of paper all the time when I go with my camera?
do you recommend this camera still? are there others that might be better for the street value?
You can buy lens caps with a white front for custom white balance ot just glue something white on one.

Go to the 2nd tool sign and scroll down to WB Shift/BKT and press SET.

there a automatic flash setting in white balance settings
How did you change your GUI to that green and black theme?
Thank you for explaining this subject so well.
Thanks
whats the default whitebalance?
thanks for your help.
tacati2009 happy to help
At 7:40 look at your camera settings. You are still on AWB setting. You have to be on the custom white balance setting to set a custom white balance. You didn't change anything at all.
Can you use a White Balance lens cap to accomplish the same thing?
Thank you very much of the informative stuff. I learned a lot for this video. Well put
thanks
Can you do the same with the t1i??
Good video thanks for posting.
hey so I just want to change some photos into black and white i have the t3i. Is there anyway I can do this after the shot has been taken like is it an option on a menu? Also I notice the CA has a setting for this but its a grainy black and white and I just want a normal one. Thanks

Sofia MyNutritionist you can use the white background to set wb if you want just make sure the white is white enough.
Thanks ! :) I managed to do it while fiddling about with the camera :)
@mindofxminus happy I could help
You, can preset your shot to monochrome but you can not turn it to b&w after you have taken the shot in the camera.
I was taking pix with my Canon T3I last night at an event where it was pretty dark. So would putting the WB on which setting take out the orange coloring?
It will help with the color but not the lighting.
What is the best mode to shoot Concerts .. Should I shoot in the P mode at 800 speed?.
My pictures are way to white in the face
Rick Anderson I use Manual for concerts. You will have to do some editing in post
***** Thank you so much for the advice Sid.. I will give it a try..
It has.. Thanks again my new friend..

ronsebay I believe you are seeing Magic lantern on my camera
Calvin? Or Kelvin?
Don't you need to set the white balance to "custom" after you go into menu and select the photo you want to use as the white balance? Otherwise I think you were still in AWB.
yes with Magic Lantern
could you just over expose a close up with flash so that it gives you a white picture instead of using paper?
how can i get magic lantern?
@JiggySkateboards lol it works
yes the camera sees the white in the environment its in and the lighting its in and recognizes it should be white and compensates for it.

It should be off of the custom setting you just made. Make sure your WB is set to custom.

You never moved out of AWB setting. Your camera said to set to custom white balance setting. You never did. You are still on AWB setting. You NEVER got a custom white balance setting.
Thank you for your help my teacher keeps telling me my white balance is off.
Heidi Bragg happy to help
Video starts at 4:00
@jaycarltheone The is the best on the market for now still
you make it wrong! your setup is on AWB (automatic withe balance)
White balance starts at 6:38
when u shot a picture at 7:30, your camera was still on auto white balance...
12 minutes max
it will not be as accurate
that's incorrect technique you are using, white object should be placed where you have your point of interest (object which you wanna shoot) and it is enough to have white object covering only metering spot, not the whole photo ;)
Pretty sure this video could be done in 2 mins.
for a white image why not just purposely overexpose an image so its completely white
