I knew Wing Commader - Mr EFP 'Sam' Wheller - who flew the P-40 with 26 Sqn at Gatwick. He originally flew the Lysander with 26 Sqn as part if the BEF before the retreat to England.
He told me many fascinating stories.
So lovely to see your video and the Airfix P-40
sounds fascinating! Thanks for sharing!
You lucky stiff. The P-40 is such a classic pursuit plane in design. One of my favorites despite better aircraft.
Mine too! I’m actually disappointed I didn’t get the Warhawk version when I had the chance
@@ModelMinutes nice kit but not for me simply because its 1/48....i have enough trouble trying to find space for 1/72 models as is so 1/48 is out.
@@jaws666 I used to feel that way but I feel that working on something a little bigger is a little easier on the hands and eyes
@@ModelMinutes i agree as long as you have the space but sadly i dont...not going to go into details but due to personal circumstances i had to move back home with the parents and they DONT want their house turned into an aircraft mueseam.
@@jaws666 I know that feeling
Hello YT algorithm, please bless this channel with many viewers in return for Matt's excellent work and skills.

I've had the P-40B version of this kit in the stash almost as long as I've been back in the hobby. It really looks like a good one, I just need to motivate and actually build the thing. It's only in my logo and everything... :D
You should get back to it soon - i enjoyed this one :D
Really cool model. Thank you for sharing.
thanks for watching!
RE washing, I've been using MRP Degreaser, just brush it on with a soft brush and let it dry. Saves loads of time and is super simple.
Great tip!
I built this kit (along time ago - eek), it went together beautifully, the cockpit was a joy to build.
yeah, i really enjoyed building this one!
For some reason in 2017 many kits where manufactured in the UK. In the latest Spruetalk episode - if I understood correctly, the Airfix folks said that the India produced kits will gradually transition to this harder plastic.
Yes, they are swapping the plastic over
I wonder if some of the definition will leak from the softer kits over time?
I cant wait for you to build this one and paint it, its my fav plane of all time, plus I am looking to get into Airfix models again after 20 years away from the hobby, so this in 1/48 scale is perfect....
awesome! This would be a good choice! The other USAAF version (link in description) has a simpler paint scheme which might be an easier choice if you're just getting back into modelling
@@ModelMinutes yeah, I plan on doing a few variants. I have been looking for this online and seems its now impossible to find now, dam, I fancied making a tomahawk aswell. I have ordered the choice you have shown the Warhawk, looking forward to making that for sure!
This guy loves Cartograph decals!
They are my fav!
Airfix have said that the choice of using Cartograph decals is the same cost as the actual styrene in the kit. They think it's worth it.
@@randytaylor1258cost of the styrene is pennies, the cost is in getting the metal tools made which can get up to 100k per tool.
I like this fighter plane Curtiss Tomahawk Mk 2 nice model kit aircraft from Airfix. Nice plane indeed. ❤️👍🤗😁😀
Indeed it is!
Great video Matt. The P-40 is my favourite aircraft. It is a great kit indeed. It appears that Airfix put a lot more effort into this one than some of their other recent releases and it shows.
This was out of stock everywhere for a long time in Australia but recently I've spotted at least one or two in just about every local brick and mortar store and plenty online so it's apparent that they may have done another release.
Yeah! Although a 2016/2017 design they did put a bit of love into the design - they currently have the USAAAF/AVG P40B in stock on the website (link in description) which is the same kit with different decals
@@ModelMinutes
Is that the one with Pearl Harbour markings? Very sweet!
- Thank God! Minimalist riveting, appropriate for a flush riveted, painted aircraft in 1:48. - And a pilot!? I suppose I'll have to check if I have some place for this, the home front British markings are unusual for a Tomahawk.
yeah, it's a good kit with some interesting schemes
Just made use of the airfix club 20% off this weekend to order the p40 and hurricane in 1:48 , I’m really enjoying the scale after building mainly 1:72 kits.
I'm tempted to get some more models at that discount - but I really shouldn't lol!
Both those kits go together well so you can spend your time detailing them. My early Hurricane came with Battle of Britain vehicles and ground crew.
While the detail differences have largely disappeared between 1:72 and 1:48 scales -- many of the recent smaller kits have been derived from the larger versions -- you don't have to go blind adding detail to the larger versions.
Model on!
Looks a lovely kit and I will have to dig it out of the stash as I also picked it up from The Works ages ago along with the Airfix B5N1 Kate which is a nice kit as well.:)
Hope you enjoy it! I've got the Club version of the Kate from 2021 to do at some point . .
I built together myself the Lego Ninjago Jay's Lightning jet EVO Ninjago it's very nice cool.
Very cool!
Good ol' strong p40
Love a P40
I'll look at this one later I build this kit it pretty good
Nice!
quick question...
what do you use to fill small gaps between the glued parts on 1/72 models?
Quick answer…
Model filler
Matt you mentioned the pilot briefly but didn't mention it's a three part figure so poseable to an extent.
Yes that is correct, the pose is slightly adjustable but although the arms are separate they kinda only go on in one position without it starting to look weird 😂
@@ModelMinutes The other option I can think of would require some scratch building. Arms raised in impact and / or a cockpit fire (maybe a tiny bit of cotton wool coloured red / orange?).
Angel hair painted gray looks better than cotton wool.
@@randytaylor1258 not heard of angel hair but that sounds workable too.
Have you ever built the air fix 1/76 panther?
not yet
Hello where are the paint codes for individual parts , i see numbers but no code to colour ?
in the instructions, when looking at the diagrams, if there is a number and letter in a circle and pointing at a part (for example A16) then that is the part number from the "A" sprue. The letter it starts with corresponds to the relevant sprue to help with easier location of the part during assembly.
If there is a number pointing to a part without a letter and circle around it, then that is a Humbrol paint colour number and indicates that the part labelled should be painted with that particular paint.
For example, in this kit, looking at step number 1, the cockpit floor (part number A12) requires that it be painted overall in Humbrol 226 (which is a matt interior green colour) with the areas where the rudder pedals go being painted in 56 Aluminium. Additionally, the step indicates that the control coloumn (A06) is glued onto the cockpit floor (A12) and is also painted in Humbrol 226 with the top being labelled as Humbrol 85 (Satin Black).
This is explained in the key to symbols on page 2 of the instructions
Edit: For reference the instructions can be found here: www.scalemates.com/products/img/4/0/7/1025407-27-instructions.pdf
You have mentioned a 3D printer version of a usable stand. Can you post the details, I have a resin and FFM printer and would be interested. Thanks Matt!
This is the one I’ve used, pretty good design www.thingiverse.com/thing:3347277
@@ModelMinutes Thanks Matt.
I would have thought that it would have been nice to do a colour scheme for Nevil Duke as he is probably the most famous of the RAF Tomahawk pilots.
perhaps they are saving that for a future release
airfix got the best p-40s ngl
They are really nice
P40 and Sharkmouth ..has to be.. That is the P40 look. Mind you i do like the Pearl Harbour P40s with the old US insignia before the went to the Star N Bar
yeah they do look good!
The Airfix 1:48 Tomohawks/P-40s were the first to properly portray the cockpit as sitting on the upper surface of the wing, giving the proper depth to the sidewalls.
The texture in the wheelwells is protective cloth that Curtiss installed -- nice to see that it appears optional, here.
Italeri released one with a huge Cartograph sheet of shark-mouth markings -- I added it to my stash for future builds.
thanks for the info!
Lovely looking kit shame the works cant get airfix anymore
They might in the future 🤞🏻
Possibly a reflection of the popularity of the kit? I thought The Works tends to get "remaindered" stock that sell at bargain prices, but I may have misunderstood.
@@MacMcCaskill that’s generally the case, excess stock sold cheaply
I have a Q for you, Im 55 yers old now, and my eyesight isnt what it used to be,
and also ,a tiny bit of hand shaking, d you think it would be easier buildid 1/48 scale , instead of 1/72, that I have done , or does it not matter?
Best regards Anders
Yes, 1/48 scale is larger and allows a little more flexibility when it comes to getting those finer details, as they are a bit bigger. I've certainly enjoyed my experience with 1/48
Hello I have a request possibly you will not see it but can you make a video on how to make videos like you make of your builds. Plz
a video on how i make videos? An interesting idea!
Nicely done kit. Can remember talking about buying one back when it was released but there were other priorities at the time. That sink mark on pilot is a big negative as the crew is an important component of the model to me. Maybe it marks me as having an attitude, but with model airplanes if the manufacture doesn't give me the guys at their stations then the manufacturer doesn't get my dollars - no crew, no sale. A big positive is kit option for having landing gear retracted.
Easy to fill a sink mark in the pilot .. bit picky.. come on .. filling and sanding is what you do when you model ..all part of the fun.. I am sure you could even replace him if it that much of an issue.
@@kittyhawk9707 You judge me from your ignorance; my health is a mess in several ways & amonf them are musculoskeletal and neurological affects on my hands, that I can still do madels at all is a bit of a thing. And sometimes I can't do models for months. Doing extra fixes takes away from doing the regular things.
@@scottfw7169 oh right .. how am i to know what medical problems you have .. I wasn't judging you at all .. i don't know you or your history ..chill out .. hardly an issue.. Well just replace the pilot then from another kit....not hard... or live with it.
yeah, from a review point I think that sink mark is the only major fault that I found with the kit, but I'd rather have a pilot with an issue than no pilot at all
@@ModelMinutes personally ..i don't like pilots in my models .. I always do wheels down anyway .. always seems strange to have a "flying" model with it's prop static... and i hate painting people ..
Are working on a build video?
a build video should come out in the future
No shit! You've finally discovered there are kits out there worth more than a tenner 🥴🥴🥴
Guess you missed some of my recent unboxings then - I recently reviewed the Hellcat which was over £100, the Hurricane which was like £50 and a few others that are more than £10
I've also bought both new train sets from Hornby TT:120 which are close to £200 mark - for a review channel I kinda have to balance what I can and can't afford with the limited revenue that YT pays
@@ModelMinutes
👍
So your taking sponsorships now Matt?
Would appear so, helps fund the channel
@@ModelMinutes makes sense. I’ve had my fare share of the more annoying sponsors.
Seems like a great kit. Too bad it's out of stock everywhere like most of the airfix kits.
I’m hoping that they will reintroduce it in the range in the next few years
Enough with thought wheelie bad puns mate.
😂
No more kits for me and o migjt not even build another 1.
how come?
@@ModelMinutes got messed about by my local model shop and it took them 6 days to tell me that 2 of the 3 kits i ordered werent in stock despite their website saying they were and they only told me after i got in contact with them first....only too happy to take my money and not even communicate with me and its left a very sour taste in my mouth.....in fact 1 of the kits isnt even in production anymore
@@jaws666 I wouldn’t take that out on the hobby as a whole, sounds like the model shop messed up, I’d take my business somewhere else if it were me
@@ModelMinutes thats the problem...here in Dublin tjere are only 2 model shops and the other 1 does not have a website and even though its a great shop and a treasire trove for vintage and oop kits which i love to day his opening hours are somewhat erratic is an understatement so you are literlarly taking a chance if you go to the shop in the hope hes actually open.....and i cant order from abroad as i dont have a credit card....but the reason for that is a story for another day,lol
@@jaws666 sorry to hear that, hopefully things might get better in the future
1/48 scale and no seat belts, yet again!
I’m sure some could be scratch built
Not hard to make them from masking tape ..
Nice , it's time for another p40 build.
you know it!
I remember when I first built this in 1/72nd scale, with the code GA●Y code.
Nice!
