It really irritates me that most of the time when this song is on a playlist or like the Les Mis Soundtrack it skips the prisoners singing. I love the prisoner's parts and I think it's so important and It shouldn't be skipped.
I like to imagine that there is a symbolism behind Valjean carrying the french flag, like he symbolizes the poor who drag the french nation along at the command of the law and wealthy.
I don't care what people say about his casting, I think Russel Crowe did a great job as Javert. It may not be Broadway level, but he sings way better than I thought he'd be able to.
I think he pulled it off well. The acting was far on point. I very much enjoy that they kept his singing, instead of dubbing or auto tuning or even recasting. I find it hard to believe any movie of this importance would be recast or dubbed, but ya never know.
I really think his singing is reflective of the character. He is a practical man, his singing is communicative and concise, like barking orders at prisoners or shouting at a criminal to halt.
It's not so much that it's not on the same level it's that he doesn't really fit in with the other singers since his musical background is rock instead of Broadway/stage/musicals so it stands out and people think it's worse than it is
I just think its stupid that they had to record on set. If this was recorded in a studio where post and autotune would have been available, like any other musical ever made his singing would never have been an issue. But nooo

The sad thing is that even in modern society it's largely the same as in this movie. No one wants to hire an ex-con, even if it was just a minor crime, because even in the event that the business is ok with it if the public ever found out a convicted criminal was working at a local store, it would hurt business if not cause an uproar. And if an ex-con can't make money legally, what do you think they're going to do?
In most countries it's doable to resocialize after prison. The US is really bad, they never got to the resocialize-part and still try to punish during and after prisontime.
It's definitely limits a person's choices, but there is still work to be had. Some industries don't care much at all, like construction. An ex-con can also start a legitimate business without any extra restrictions or disclosure requirements. In most areas, the 'minor crimes' that you referenced can be expunged after 7 years. After that, the individual doesn't even have to disclose it to their prospective employer.
Small Moustache Man yeah but should non violent drug offenders be treated the same way as someone who is actually a threat to people like a gang member or rapist

If you think that Jean Valjean is the only innocent one amongst the prisoners and everyone else deserved their sentences, you’ve missed literally the entire point of Les Miserables
I grew up on the 10th anniversary version of Les Miserables, so I was a little iffy when I first went to see it in the theaters, but it blew me away! Hugh Jackman was so amazing at his dedication to this movie and I still choke up seeing both versions of this!!
I don’t know why people criticised Javert’s singing, personally I thought it was perfect and even if it was out of his range (as people have said) it fits his character

Dragging the whole mast section to Javert was Valjean basically giving the middle finger. "I brought you the flag to you, but you can get your 'clean' hands dirty if you want it so much." Could also be symbolic of his feelings for the government that imprisoned him so long, dragging the flag through the mud and filth is not exactly respectful. Similarly, Javert shows Valjean how little he cares/respects him a moment later. "My name is Jean Valjean." "Whatever you say, 24601." Dehumanizing, belittling, reduced to a number, not an individual.
@@Aaron-ne4kradditionally at that point the tricolour wasn’t the national flag of France and the fact that it was on the ground, drenched and literally trampled on represents the misery and loss of revolutionary spirit specifically amongst the prisoners but also in the general population of France.

Ghost Right?! But sadly that doesn't mean shit in those times. Like, after years it's still difficult to process that all of this started for a high ass priced loaf of bread Xd
Ghost I haven't read the book in a while, but if I remember right, he was only sentenced five years for the bread (which is still ridiculous, but whatever). The remaining time was because he tried to escape two or three times and actually succeeded in one of his attempts. The worst part of it is (If I remember right) that each time he tried to escape he was almost done with his sentence. He just kept making it worse for himself instead of waiting for his sentence to end.
He also attempted to escape multiple times. Stealing a whole loaf of bread was pretty freaking big back then, by the way, especially during conflicts like war.
I’m gonna say it. This is better than the broadway. It flows better, and the singing capabilities of the cast are more level, instead of having some being distractingly better than others.

When I was in the Navy I worked in an engine room for five years. A place literally called "The Aft Pit." I had "24601" stenciled on the back of all my coveralls.

My personal song to start my shift...over the Bluetooth speaker...in front of everyone. Actually is a motivator.
*fun fact:* this was filmed ten minutes away from me at the Dockyard! D: If only I knew at the time, then I could of fangirled over Russell Crowe!!
I don't care what anyone says, Russell did great
Watching this after Hong Kong's "Do You Hear The People Sing" brought me here
"Retrieve the flag."
*goes over and picks up the entire goddamn mast.
"My sister's child was a child of death, and we were starving-"
"You'll starve again, LOL!"
"L-O-O-O-L
tbh this is my favorite song out of the entire musical
Gives me the "Deliver Us" feels from The Prince of Egypt
0:25 when the teachers trying to pick someone to answer a question
1:59 is the most legendary scene of the movie
When I was in the Navy I worked in an engine room for five years. A place literally called "The Aft Pit." I had "24601" stenciled on the back of all my coveralls.
2:39 when quarantine ends

@@45Masterking this confused me because I rarely comment
This comment is SEVERELY underrated xD
this reminds me of "deliver us" from the prince of Egypt 😍😍 and a mix of "a girl worth fighting for" from mulan
stealing to eat is not a crime but a natural instinct.
Pedro Bakale and a crime
Gotta eat to live gotta steal to eat
tell you all about it when i have the tiiiiimeeeeeeee
So if I went to the grocery store to steal multiple stuff, it wouldn’t be a crime, but a natural instinct? Nah, it’s a crime, and it was a big crime back in those days; especially during times of conflict, famine, and war.
also didn't we decide that it was a crime if it goes against our moral code at the time? I'm not sure tho. haha
I used to think the music in les mis was awful because of its simplicity but I'm starting to think the simplicity is intentionally brilliant and full of meaning
omg lol 2:49 to 2:53 is so funny yet so good vocal wise i laughed and cried about how good those lines are "this warns you are danergouse man" "i stole a lofe of bread" lol good song sorry i meant GREAT SONG
I'm not a musical fan at all. But 2:24. Oh my god. One of the greatest moments in film history in my opinion. The dragging of the flag through the muddy water. The disgrace the flag carries as it soaks with mud. So much in so little.
This is great to hear live in the theatre
this is the best scene in the movie imo
I can't believe they skipped over the other prisoner's lyrics on the Les Misérables Soundtrack. That was such a good part of the song!
"Your time is up and your parole's begun! You know what that means!"
"Yes! It means I'm free."
" *no* "
