- Red and Black Song Les Miserables 2012 Soundtrack
This is one of my favorite scenes in the whole movie. The conflict between love and revolution.. Hope you enjoy!
Red, the blood of angry men,
Black, the dark of ages past.
Red, a world about to dawn,
Black, the night that ends at last.
Red, I feel my soul on fire,
Black, my world if she’s not there.
Red, it’s the colour of desire,
Black, it’s the colour of despair.

Arguing in song is the best kind of argument.
Shaaalien of course, is there any other way to argue? Besides swords fighting
I love my singing duets with girl about whether cream should be in carbonara or not.

Enjolras' expression when Grantaire decides to encourage Marius is my expression to everyone in my entire school.
At last! A RUclips comment I can relate to!
Lol! So true!!
Haha same
this my expression to everyone in my entire life.
yeah like are you people for real
the sad part of this song is enjolras (and the other students, but him particularly) was SO SURE that the people will rise to help them
I know what a letdown
the sad part of this song is how the movie just cut out random lines that 100% deserved to stay in when les amis are some of its best castings
M Laurence like Grantaire put that bottle down ...
I'm still upset that they cut out "Grantaire put that bottle /down/"
They should realise an extended version at least, so we can listen to it anyway!!!
Can we all just agree that Grantaire is the most underrated character in this. He literally has seconds of screen time, and still so iconic
Who was he?
Anonymous Mobster Éponine’s kid brother
@@TMK687 you confused Grantaire with Gavroche. Gavroche was her brother, Grantaire is the one drunk student in love with Enjolras.
Works for Gavroche as much as Grantaire. Just that Gavroche’s actor (so bad with names) was so much more intense than all the big actors. Little one was amazing.
Lowkey best character
This Enjolras stole the show as a vocalist, definitely the best vocalist in the main cast.
That's likely because he's played by Aaron Tveit, a hugely talented (and well-known) Broadway actor. He was such an amazing pick for the role :)
Samantha Barks???????
@@Kojo2338male cast.
Every performance of LES MIZ that I see it never fails that Enjolras is my favorite. Marius always seems so weak beside him.
When it’s Aaron Tveit you know you’re seeing and listening to the best.
Eddie Redmayne has never impressed me in anything he’s done.
Grantaire and Enjolras have the best tension in this song. The look Enjolras gives him after he encourages Marius with his romance ramble is beautiful.

Enjolras tells everyone to not let the wine go to their brains, Grantaire purposely looks at him and drinks from a bottle
That is how you assert dominance
Enjolras:NANI
Enjolras: "Don't let the wine go to your head"
Grantaire: "Get tae fuck ye soggy patriot"
Grantaire said, "why don't you come over here and make me"
Enjolras looks like he only talked to Grantaire😂😂
Like: "You've had enough. You are going to die first"
George Blagden has portrayed Grantaire perfectly. I love his sassy attitude, how he obviously only wants to mess with Enjolras when he is encouraging Marius to sing about his love life and when he is drinking just to annoy him, because he has just said to not let the wine get to their heads. I also adore the fact that he pronounced the names with a french accent, while the others did it with an english accent because they are american and english actors, because it just makes the portray of the character so much better. I doubt anyone else would have been better as Grantaire, he is just perfect.
Chloe Charlotte Don’t forget Fra Fee giving Courfeyrac an Irish accent! It makes Courf who he is.
I also love Hadley Fraser as Grantaire
George is perf, I agree 99%, but there is 1% out - George is not ugly enough to be Grantaire
Анастасия Горячева I know 😭 George is so handsome and Grantaire...is not lol
Lol its weird to see him like this after watching vikings

2:29 (with a lead-in) "who cares about your lonely soul? we strive towards a larger goal. our little lives don't count ... at ALL"

Grantaire - “I am agog, I am aghast” *is one of us actually straight?*
Oh my God this comment!
In the book, Courfeyrac seems to get around (yes, with women), Grantaire is possibly gay, (though Hugo couldn't make it too obvious considering the time period) , Marius is straight, and Enjolras is asexual/aromantic, at least that's my theory, (and he's also mostly oblivious to Grantaire's near worship of him, until the end). I Dont know about the rest.
@@virginiacreech6881 Grantaire is not gay. He admires Enjolras. Not everything is love and romance you know. Friendship exists as well. They were like brothers.
@@darkninja1693 Of course I know not everything is romance. I remind people of that frequently, when they try to ship together any and every character.
There are implications in the text that Grantaire might be gay.
But there is room for either interpretation.
virginia creech I think Enjolras is actually in love with liberty
I just love Enjolras' face from the moment Marius stars singing around minute 2:08.
He's like: Agh!, please stop singing about love, France before pants, bro.
So I really, really like the moment when Grantaire sets Marius up to sing because on one hand he does it to tease Enjolras but on the other hand he shows that he (maybe as the only one) understands what is going on in Marius. The gesture he does while singing “black“ to me means something along the lines of “See how easy it is for him to transfer the meaning of this colours to his feelings? _This_ is central for him in his life right now.“ And you see how much compassion he actually has for the amis while watching from the sidelines. At least I like to think so.
Yes yes yes. Exactly what I was thinking, I love his role in this conflict.
Perfectly portraited❤️
woah.

I love how George (Grantaire) didn't tell anyone that he was going to act like this, so all the little looks he gives to Enjolras were secret and not even Aaron knew about them! I feel it makes them seem more realistic

HAHAHAHA
HE'S IN LOVE WITH GRANTAIRE
Enjolras: “FOR PATRIA and slightly Grantaire but I won’t admit it.”
*dresses up in a French flag*
+Fairy Meets Edgelord Actually, according to the original novel, Enjolras is what we today would call asexual. There is literally a whole massive paragraph explaining this in half a dozen different ways. His only love is France, as seen when he is described as the "marble lover of Liberty," the word 'lover' being used in the same way it is in the phrase 'they were lovers.' Grantaire may be in love with Enjolras, as seen in various Greek mythology references and other inferences, but Hugo makes it clear that those feelings are one sided. In fact, Enjolras constantly shows extreme irritation with Grantaire because Grantaire is always drinking (which Enjolras despises) and never actually seems to follow through on any of his promises to aid the revolution.
Poor Enjolras trying to stay out of Marius' love life and then Grantiere just straight up provokes him at 1:00
My absolute favorite thing about this song (in both the movie and the musical) is the fact that instead of having someone like the romantic Jean Prouvaire or Marius' dear friend Courfeyrac encourage him in his romantic endeavors, the directors made a conscious choice to have Grantaire, the cynical yet sweet Grantaire, be the advocate. I think it really helps to illustrate his character as it was in the book, he's the only one who truly understands what Marius is going through, he too is pining over someone he feels is impossible for him to be with. When he's encouraging Marius he's essentially saying "Don't listen to Enjolras, believe you me he doesn't understand love. Go find that girl, tell her how you feel, believe me it's better to tell her than waste away from wanting".
And those glances he shares with Enjolras, literally he's trying to tell him "Hey, this is how I feel about you, I know you don't understand that and I know I seem like a drunken cynic to you but I do believe in something... That would be you..." I can't, it's so d*mn cute
I like how Grantire and the others were starting to sail on the CosettexMarius ship but Enjorlas thinks EnjorlasxFrance is still better
Neri Martxia I agree with enjolras
Enjolras x Eponine tops them all
@@zoeymckeown3194 He's gay for Grantaire, he's just rather oblivious
@@nightcoresubliminals2038
I always saw Enjolras as asexual and probably aromantic. He doesnt care about romance at all. Now, poor Grantaire is hopelessly in love with him, but Enjolras never realizes, or reciprocates, seeing Grantaire as a friend or a minor annoyance. Until the end of his life, when Grantaire dies with him. Then I think he finally understands, in that brief moment.
Enjolras x Grantaire wins

I can't get enough of this scene... there are so many layers to the hidden looks, glances between characters that subtly say so much. And the choreography is perfect! I love the last chorus: Enjolras' satisfied glance at 3:13 when R finally agrees with him, and Grantaire's last sassy little look on the final 'black!' that says 'only messing Enjolras, i love you really'.
coolbean08 yes yes yes yes
Enjolras is always so serious. Also, even when Grantaire really starts singing, he doesn't look like he means it at all. He looks like he's singing sarcastically just to spite Enjolras.

This scene is truly profound. When he reveals his feelings for a woman that causes doubt to rise in him surrounded by his brothers during their secret meeting. The dichotomy of man. Wanting to serve with his brothers while also longing for love. Truly a wonderful war of virtues. Great. Fucking. Scene.
R's face when Enjolras sits next to him is just straight up "Shit. No. nononono. You weren't meant to sit there. This is my bubble. My not-Enjolras bubble. I'm too gay and sober right now for you to be in the bubble"

Complain all you want about the rest of the casting in this movie, but Aaron Tviet's Enjolras is so spot on like in a lot of adaptions, Enjolras is just this angry revolutionary and he's just kinda boring. Aaron is much softer than the usual opera actors that normally play the character and he does more than just be loud and forceful, and I personally think it's a great fit. He's intense, but has a softer side. He's definitely more of the book adaption of the character. You can tell Aaron really understood the character and his complexity, and you can see that fire in his eyes that truly makes a good Enjolras. What a shame this wasn't the full scene from the musical! It would have been even more brilliant, and the dynamic between him and Grantaire is wonderful in this too. Bravo!
absolutely agree with you. we can see a 'high-class' revolution leader here, a real young student. I have researched quite a lot about different Enjolras in different theatre adaptions, but none of the is the real Enjolras. They are just strong and angry, but lack of romance and ideals in their appearances and voices (sorry if you guys are fans of them). And also Aaron Tviet's look matches the description from the book - the goddess beauty! Well Enjolras was not a normal leader or fighter, he was fabulous with lots of philosophy in his words. And only Aaron can deliver that. that's why I fell for both Enjolras and Aaron. such lovely young men.

@@kp4692 I don’t know if you’ve watched the musical, but there are some versions of the song that makes this (even more) obvious, look the version of London 2014, the way Grantaire makes _eyes_ at Enjorlas and tries to win his attention is ✨something✨. Their version of drink with me is also beautiful (and gay), it also shows how he is helplessly in love with Enjorlas who only sees him as a friend/ally 😩
@@mrtuwnbr I totally have!!! I've seen soooooooo many versions that are so strong in the Enjoltaire!!!! Goodddd they're so good! Also I heard a rumor that if you look at the movie script, Tom Hooper tried to make it look like Grantaire hates Enjolras but George Blagden saw what was going on and went against ittt! (He is our hero) and I'm tempted to believe it given what Tom Hooper did in terms of straightwashing for... well that movie is not really even Cats anymore. Some versions of DWM makes Enjorlas bee really mean with Grantaire by rejecting his bottle (and even threatening him with it 💔) or ignoring him, but I prefer to pretend that the don’t exist cause they make my heart suffer :(
I like better the ones when he’s sweet and hugs him.
I don’t belive Enjorlas hates him, he hates that he doesn’t believe in anything and is an alcoholic, but deep down he cares for him and for his friends. If he really hated he would never accepted dying by his side and would never smiled at him or held his hand.
Some actors are just perfect for them 🥺
I believe my favorites are the ones from de London version (2014) I believe they captured their personalities really well.

WROOOONNNNGGGG: newt is just Marius in disguise- Marius is the only person Eddie could truly be 😂😂
Eliana Pasternak I’m going to say you haven’t seen maze runner death cure 😂😂
Aaron Toviet is such a fantastic singer
George Blagden really gave us everything, only for his verse in Drink With Me to be cut 🥺😭
Also appreciate Enjolras' EXTREMELY pointed look at Grantaire for the line "Don't ket the wine go to your brains" Ugh everything about the pair of them gives me feels. Best bromance of all time.
And ask Grantaire's reply by tipping the bottle to his lips while kind of smirking. They chose an excellent cast for all of them in my opinion
Its not a bromance it's literally just a romance
Think you made a spelling error, there’s no b in romance.
Definite bromance 😂 some people just read WAYYYYY too much into it.
Mella Bella You haven't read the book, have you? It describes Enjolras as a gay man and every time Grantaire is mentioned his love for and devotion to Enjolras is mentioned too. A lot of time is spent focusing in the romantic and physical attraction Grantaire feels for Enjolras. Your lack of reading comprehension isn't our fault, dude.
I love how R is like we could have this Enjolras but you playin
Phan_tbh _ 'but you playin' oh my god I diedddd
+Nahren Neno so did they
Phan_tbh _ first of all how dare you
Phan_tbh _ first of all how dare you
Exactly man, right after Marius sings "I feel my soul on fire" R points at Enjolras as he sings, he ain't even low-key anymore he's way too drunk for that
EVERYONE GIVE IT UP FOR AMERICAS FAVORITE FIGHTING FRENCHMeN
ENJOLRAS
He's taking the flag by the post making French coats redder with bloODSTAINS
I JUST SPIT MILK ON MY TABLE
But you could watch Hamilton up to like the middle, watch les mis then continue watching hamilton
caro line LAFayETTe would have been there so it's like-
When this movie first came out, I watched it in bits and pieces because musicals that are all singing tend to make me fall asleep (not because they're boring but I listen to music to go to sleep so it's just a reaction). Out of all the songs, this one was always my favorite but then I found out it was Aaron Tveit that played Enjolras and had to go watch the whole thing back (without falling asleep for once) and now I can't stop watching it
i’ve been gushing about this ever since the movie was released but as a french person i really need everyone to know that george blagden (as grantaire) has the most on point pronunciation of the name “marius” in the entire movie - everytime he sings that one line, “is marius in love at last”, i get chills. and it’s been almost a decade.

Enjolras: And yet! Beware.. don't let the wine go to your brains! *glares specifically at Grantaire*
R: Bish don't tell me what to do. *drinks more from bottle*
the nitpicking of every facial expression happening in the comments might be one of my favourites things ever
Irene G George (Grantaire) has said he purposefully and carefully added those glances in
