You should have brought Marika with you as a companion during the HopeTown quests ,Ox . The unique dialog she has would have been very interesting since she is from there . For instance it would have been intriguing to see how Marika would interact with Ron Hope .
I play a character called Brighton Archer. Long hauler, empathic, supports her parents in New Atlantis, but is more at home in Akila, a Freestar collective native. Pragmatist but also hopeful.
I have traveled a long time with Marika Boros, more than any other companion. Her enthusiasm, charm, idealism and determination is endearing to me. I see her flaws, but they are forgivable, the sort that a little sister confides with conviction to the sibling they look upto.
Marika does have more dialog, a line or two at every major port. Playing immersive, I often avoid fast travel and board my ship to take off. After spending about 5 minutes in a port, upon boarding your ship with Marika as your active follower, she will have something to say, points out the merits and flaws she saw.
To understand what Marika is, you must travel the universe, post war factions reeling from the ravages of a galactic colony war, corruption and gridlocked by armistice. The horrors of xeno weapons, the skies ablaze with brutal space combat with the Crimson fleet, the screams of distress calls from Spacer ravaged colonies on the frontiers, the personification of greed in the steel fist of the ecleptic, and the blood of hoards of Va'ruun cultist that charged our guns until we took cover behind their pile of bodies while they continued to scream blasphemous curses.
Walking in the wilderness... and hearing Marika say "This looks like a good spot for a settlement." And to see the look on her face at that moment. You come to realize, Marika is... hope.
The companion Particle perk only affects your particle weapons recharge time from what I understand.
Marika Boros (Boros Marika) is Hungarian origin name. There are developers form my home country in Bethesda. Nice video Ox.

I wish more could be done with the named, hirable crewmembers. A lot of them have really interesting backstories. Maybe their own mini companion quests
Man I brought Heller to his stated hometown of New Homestead and he didn’t say a single word the whole time! That remains my greatest disappointment in StarField.
Yeah from what I've experienced, the companion ship weapon systems perks effect the weapon recharge rate in combat. I think the larger take away is that the companion perk benefits are rather ambiguous and oddly just never explained to the player.

Such wasted potential, she should have been a full fledged companion with a side quest and romance tbh, I decided to hire her and likes listening to her backstory 😅

1:59 Hey Ox! I don’t think that’s how it works. I think the companion stats are applied to our own after the fact. Their stats don’t add to our stats but they affect how our ships operate. So she gives a damage boost that would only be noticeable if someone measured the difference in the time it takes to destroy a ship using her specialty weapon with Marika on and off the ship.
Once I saw Marika in action with a shotgun I didn't really care about her other perks, she is badass in ground based combat, there's another unlikely one for combat and that's Rosie Tannehill found in Akila city, give her a Hard Target with ammo and she's a marksman, and its not even one of her skills.
Would like to see her confront Hope,with you at the end of the Freestar Ranger quest. Thanks from Panama city Beach, FL

Vasco, Sam Coe, and Omari Hassan are members you want on your ships crew. They give you a free reactor point, and a free point to engines and shield respectively.

Marika isn't alone in her idea of creating a utopian settlement. As you explore, there are countless small civilian outposts, each with a handful of people surviving by homesteading and/or trading with travelers, sometimes in completely inhospitable conditions.
as someone who went from being raised with pretty much everything i needed (not rich but i never had to worry about food) to struggling to make enough to pay the bills and put food on the table, I can see her point to a degree but society will always end up segmenting into classes its just how capitalism works, sure maybe another social structure might seem appealing but Communism and socialism, for example, have their own share of issues as well. I think she is just a dreamer and wants that ideal society that she yearns for but the best you can get is trying to minimize the poverty while never being able to get rid of it altogether.
Capitalism, socialism etc are spectra. Some things are better left to the market, other things aren't. The US style of government isn't the only option. In Europe there's a free market. But there are limits to how far companies can go to rip off consumers for pure profit motives. And most countries have support structures in place for e.g. unemployment, health care, education, child and elderly care, etc.
And despite of what some US media outlets (or US ambassadors in Denmark) make Europe out to be, it's not at all some poverty-stricken hellscape here. 😉
@HansStrijker my point I suppose is that no matter how you try poverty will always be a thing even the best of intentioned governments US or EU style will always create classes and as such poverty the severity of poverty may Flux from country to country though.
It seems her whole story is a commentary on today's society which I wasn't expecting something that deep coming from a Bethesda game.
even though marika has no quest line and even though she may be a bit naive in her desire for a utopia, she is still more interesting and more fun to be around than any of the other companions. i love having her on board my ship and always look forward to her cheery greeting whenever i return to the cockpit.
Had trouble sleeping from various causes. Good to see a member vid, even in middle of the night. Today (Sat. Nov. 4th) will be my oldest daughter, Artemis’s 14th bday, so I’d better try to get some rest for now. Hope you get some time off this weekend, Ox, & that all the pets & kiddos are well.
As for the video, at least Marika has some personality & background at first. Too bad she becomes 1 dimensional after all the info dump. Maybe it’d be a great DLC aspect to flesh these characters out. It’s one of the problems I’ve seen with certain story continuity being lacking. Examples like this & the Constant never settling with a new grav drive & the Lopez Farm & friends disappearing from the world after you help them, even though he invites you to return prove there could/should be so much depth to these experiences. Anyhow, almost 5 am so I’m off.

@@AltGrendel Thank you! She’s been out most of the day with her dad, but is just returning as I write this. She wanted a certain type of cheesecake with some kind of gelatin top & I think they had to shop around to find something close to what her bestie had shown her. They probably also went bulk shopping for just about everything bcuz we were down to the dregs or out of most things. I managed to get some rest today finally. 👍🏻

Hmmm... This is a tough one to call on. It's a realy well flushed backstory with plenty of potencial, but it is missing alot that could have made this character so much better as a companion. She may have originally had more, but it got cut out due to time, story changes, or just hit the cutting room floor. Bethesda's quest creation methods are well known to be split compartmented and then judged at a meeting after so much work is done on it already rather than just descussing them at just the concept phase. Anyone else remember Skyrim's infuriating bugs in a jar, or the gladiator arena you couldn't go in? Both things created for the game, and never completed. Yet all the connected characters, items, places, or fragments of the actual quest/story/lore still remain. Leaving players feeling unfulfilled, fustrated, and searching endlessly for something that doesn't exist anymore or never was even finished. If they actually completed those unfinished quests later as DLCs over time it wouldn't feel like lazy game developer practices coming from one of the biggest names of game companies.
But then again you may need to go through certain quests to unlock the rest of her companion quests/dialogs. Oxhorn did only say he only went city to city to area trigger dialogs, and not necessarily through any quests like the one that has you deal with the Free Star Rangers & Ron Hope. You know the main focus of her backstory. But that may have been just as fruitless too.
Its difficult to get a complete 100% lore vid on any companion without running through the entire game with them. And with 20 of them its alot harder to do so for creaters to make the same thorough quality vids like Ox's Fallout4 companion lore videos that only had like 7. Grant it all of Fallout4's companions were fully flushed out and were romancible unlike Starfield's 4 out of 20. Buuuut romancing Starfields robot companion may get very uncomfortable for some players. Ut'd be like dating New Vegas's Mr Fisto... Not exactly everyone's cup of tea...

Nice vid! Marika has gotten to be one of my all-around, favorite go-to companions. Similar, in some ways, to Andreja but-- unlike the Constellation companions-- doesn't feel the need for "We need to talk..." moments in the middle of a firefight. Interesting backstory as well. All around pleasant company.

I hired her as Constellation had been wiped out by my psycho other self and needed company. I felt sorry for her before going off to Unity as had 30k of credits which was going to be lost. I wished I could give them to her so her family could join her or at least improve their lives.
It would not surprise me if the UC maintains a larger military and navy than they expect to need for their various defensive and peacekeeping tasks, as they prepare for the next war and/or expansion.
She may be reaching for something when she says "if you want peace, why do you have such a large army", even if it is naively put. After all, too high of a degree of mobilisation can convince your neighbours that you are preparing to invade them again.

The only place in Starfield that really shows the plight of the downtrodden is Paradiso. All the other places that are supposed to be slums are similar or better than what most of us have in real life.
I wonder how Marika acts if you bring her along during the Freestar Ranger quest line.

Thank you,. For the last few weeks, I was like "Who is this Marika chick on my ship?"
Surprised oxhorn hasn't done lore videos on Dead space, Baldur's gate or Alan Wake.
The only crew skill that works is leadership. If for example, you already have 2 crew members assigned to the Frontier, you can also assign Sarah without dismissing another crew member. That works for anyone who has the leadership perk.

Its really suprising how much the paid companions have to say about other factions. I just assumed they were all just skyrim companions. They kind of are but they still have something to say.

I don’t think the perk is supposed to show up on the crew screen. It may actually work when you hit the enemy.

I found Marika super early on my playthrough, funny enough it costme only 11k to hire her, no convincing necessary, and i share her view about "free" star collective and the UC, both factions feel mischievous, and liars, like the first thing we did was on our way to constellation we had to deal with the pirate captain, where?! In a hiden lab for xenobiology weapon experiments, that went wronh, karna i guess, but even vasco told us "huh this is a uc facility in the FSC territory.... Weird" so yeah i trust neither of them, and the L. I. S. T. is not abgood option either, but atleast does feel more well free, but very "hereva blanket, a knife and a matchbox, off you go" honestly just afyet Betty Howser Marika is my fav companion, i gave her an awesome Shotgun with supresor so i never had problems with her like i did with Morgan and her "leroy Jenkins" way of dealings with bad guys xD

The world has been and is full of people like her and as much as I can respect those ideas and wish/hope it could ever happen it just won't, mainly because of human nature unfortunately. There will always be good and bad people.
There is always something to salvage from a failing civilisation. It's just a question of how easily it is implemented into the following one.
I just hope he finishes the fallout 4 story playthrough. I was waiting for that type of series for years. And right when I thought I was gonna binge watch it, startfield came out and ruined it 🤣
I would argue that New Homestead and Cydonia ARE slums, vs. having uptown and downtown. Nearly no-one in either settlement is a have.

I agree with her, i am a Freestar Ranger, named Freestar Ranger Walker" and work for a better Freestar Collective in a Union with the UC and one of the Freestar corrupt Monks is Dead, the other monk in Neon will be gone in Future...

She sounds Idealistic and nieave. Sure lots of systems have issues. But some are better than others. You pick your battles.
Not a fan of the FC. The first time landing in Akila City Sarah says something like "200 years of freedom and this is the best they can come up with." Yeah, mud streets, if you can call them streets, segregated society with the Core and the Stretch, crime and corruption rampant and overlords running entire planets. Not my cup of tea. Yes, UC is not perfect with loads of bureaucracy and they don't treat the people of the Well very well (hah). Citizens do get healthcare and what looks to be some sort of UBI. Not a fan of having to earn citizenship, ala Starship Troopers, and it isn't said whether children of citizens are born citizens but I'm thinking not. Anyway I'll take the UC.
“Sophia” in the Neon bar, didn’t have anything interesting to say even AT the places she wanted to visit :( I hate the option of constellation followers or nothing if you want reactivity in conversation
Care crew are more broken then you realize because just by having them your whole ship can become permanently bugged. Had a maxed out ship with 3k+ shields get knocked down to 685 rendering the ship unusable.
She sounds just like some older relatives of mine who follows qanon (I don't even know if this is how it's spelled 😅) and all that crazy shit.
It's a huge shame that the so called "Outpost building" is just stupid camp building from cashout 76 and it's not the awesome Settlement building thing we get in Fallout 4 too. While you Oxhorn are playing this thing of a game. I'm playing Fallout 4 with Sim Settlements 2 chapter 1,2,3 and it's awesome because it's got a better storyline for the Gunners better then vanilla too. Also with Sim settlements 2 you can build both vanilla stuff and build a few new buildings too like e.g. police stations, pet shops and Tax offices too. Also make the Commonwealth a better place with a law system and make a 'NCR' of the East coast and really make real change in the game. Not like in this so called thing of game too.

I think that her complaints of the UC having too large of a military is due to her being an unreliable narrator. It’s just like how so many complain about the US military being too active but no one talks about how we are bound by treaty with many nations to defend them from aggression, and we are the only nation bound by treaty to protect trade around the world. Bretton Woods Agreement, anyone?
Eh, nah dude, there's a difference between having a reasonable adequately sized military, and excess pure for D-stroking reasons. Many countries have militaries, no issue at all, but we don't all go stroke our crotches whenever a flag is in sight or a veteran walks by.
these companions, they're just not as great as previous ones in past Bethesda games

Your content is great. Can we just admit that Starfield is not the best put together or complete game. And could very well be considered a buggy piece of crap. I recognize that you make your money speaking about Bethesda contents but it's a shame they gave you such low quality material to work with this time
