- Shoei RF-1200 Helmet Review www.revzilla.co... The new Shoei RF-1200 is a helmet without faults. We've poured over every inch of the Shoei and have come up short every time for any nitpicks or gripes. From the ground up, the Shoei RF-1200 has been completely redesigned and we are massively impressed. Starting with the new lower profile, more aerodynamic outer shell that has been true wind-tunnel tested. The RF-1200 still meets both DOT and Snell 2010 standards and is offered in 4 shell sizes. Weight savings over the RF-1100 were about 2 ounces or about 60 grams in the new RF-1200. New venting channels and vent systems simplify and increase airflow over the RF-1100. A new faceshield and base plate come with the new 1200. The CWR-1 Faceshield will be Pinlock ready in the box and features a new reinforcing ridge at the top and bottom of the shield that prevents flex and deformation over time. These ridges also act as a "max-vision" housing for the included Pinlock Lens. The new QRE base plate offers fine-tuning for the user and is easy to release the faceshield. The internal fitting shape remains the same as the RF-1100, but a new 3D Max Dry 2 System in the interior is softer to the touch and more comfortable against the face. For the first time in a RF series helmet, emergency cheek pad removal system will come standard in the RF-1200 and the EPS liner even has built-in pockets for a communication system. The new Shoei RF-1200, I think I'm in love.
I don't know how Anthony does it but to talk for almost 14 minutes non-stop with no flubs is amazing. Good review man. We appreciate all the great reviews.
That means a lot! He has put the time into making the videos as fluid as possible and our entire video team keeps trying to improve. Ride safely. -Hi-Viz Brian
J Burbank he made mistakes in this video.
It's called editing
Yeah he is a pro ))!
I love how at 2:09 it goes from "good sh..." to "good thing".
shit
I think he was going to say "shape"
I caught that too
He was gonna say shape
@@DoomFinger511 i thought "shell"
Your reviews are flawless. One request whenever possible please use matte finish and light colors for demos it makes it much easier to see the shape in the videos. Thanks!
Thank you for the feedback. RevzillaTV is going to be incorporating more riding footage in the future. Everyone really seems to dig it. ~Ali
Randomly came across this video, bc I already have an RF - 1200. But I just love hearing Anthony talk, his reviews are superb and I just miss seeing this guy.
Got the helmet today, no regrets. Thanks for the video, very insightful.
It is a nice choice for a naked bike and the vents seal well. -Hi-Viz Brian
did u guys ever do a transition shield review
i own this helmet and was wondering how to go about cleaning the front mouth vent, was riding at night and a few bugs managed to find there way in there and i would like to clean it out. thanks!
Alex Loud like mosquitoes and love bugs, or roaches and secadas?
Ramon Orrantia mostly love bugs, although i think i have a large moth stuck in the mouth vent.
Ok now I want it more
I'm always blown away by Anthony's comprehensive reviews. Great job sir!
The only thing I didn't like of the new Shoei is that indent for the padding on the side and the long lip at the back, everything else is 100% quality.
True the spoiler is much lower profile on the RF-1200, but it was developed with true wind-tunnel testing. The RF-1100 was more a simulated wind-tunnel box. And can't beat the weight savings to boot. ~Ali
Totally agree. The Pinlock-ready Transitions Lens technology is one of the best combinations for a faceshield out there. ~Ali
Rode from the UK down to Barcelona during a heat wave and my head was the coolest part on me! Upgraded to the UV reactive pinlock and with sunglasses took the brightest of sun all day long. Also if you have fairer skin the UV pinlock really helped protect me from sunburn on long days. Top helmet!
RevZilla is seriously awesome. I don't know of any other company or website that puts so much effort into describing the products they sell. The level of detail they provide is simply unmatched. Many thanks to all the staff, both in-store and online, who never seem to get tired of doing what they do so well.
Jim Horan From all of TeamZilla, Thank You! -Hi-Viz Brian
Yes, they say the fit has been improved, but the shape has not changed. If anything, it fits a bit closer to your head as the shell is slightly smaller, but the internal size remains consistent. -CK
The new Transitions Shield will first be released for the Qwest, X-12 and the RF-1100 that take the CW-1 shield. The CWR-1 that comes on the new RF-1200 is due out around the end of the year. ~Ali
I have 56mm head diameter and bought this helmet in small size.
1.) It fits on my crown perfectly and it's extremely tight all over my head.
2.) It's very difficult to wear it plus very difficult to take it off of my head.
3.) Once i wear it, it feels perfectly fited on my head, extremely tight and snug but the space front on my mouth-nose is a little bit less than i need, my nose is near the "nose cover" and is touching it.
I tried medium with larger crown pad but is a little bit loose i thing for me.
I do not have that much experience with helmets and i dont really know if it was the best choice to get that helmet.
I tried many helmet brands and i couldn't find one that perfectly fitted for me.
That's my experience.
Thanks for doing so much helpfull reviews, Thanks for sharing experience.
I've been changed the helmet with medium with thicker interiors and i have the same fitting with the small with a little bit larger shell (medium shell), this combination it fits PERFECTLY on my shoei head!!!
I am so happy with th is helmet! it's really really nice helmet!
You never mentioned your head shape. Sounds like you don't have a intermediate oval shape which this helmet is made for.
I just ordered a Shoei Motegi from revzilla, couldn't be any happier. Super fast shipping!
I'm pretty sure the "sh..." was the start of the word shape. "They didn't want to mess with the good shape." (and I'm sticking to that!) ~Ali
The RF-1100 is still one of the best helmets out there. And Shoei just announced the new Transitions shield will be available in the CW-1 shape that fits your RF-1100. ~Ali
Yes, the RF-1200 is definitely on the sport side. However, it wouldn't hurt to use it on a touring bike. The RF-1100 is one of those helmets used in a variety of riding styles and we expect the RF-1200 to be the same. -CK
Sarge large? It’s Sargent Large to u sir
Choices, choices! If you are a diehard racing fan, and go to the track frequently, I think the X-12 or waiting for an X-13 is the right choice. However, if you only hit the track a few times a year, the RF-1200 is perfectly capable of this considering its SNELL rating. -CK
Hey guys, hard to pitch the RF-1200 as a Dual-sport helmet, but there isn't anything holding it back! I think the RF-1200 is going to be the lighter option, so that may tip the scales. The GT-Air has a few more touring features like the drop-down sun-visor that set it apart.
Curious, why are you looking at this one over a Dual Sport helmet like the Arai XD-4 or Shoei Hornet? -CK
Very informative video! Thanks! Bought an RF 1200 recently and this vid, along with the manual, is giving me a lot of insight into features, functions, and cleaning.
Alexander McClelland Great choice! What are you riding? -DrewZilla
RevZilla thanks! I chose the RF 1200 Brigand helm, icon hood jacket, and bought a 2014 matte grey and black Yamaha Stryker 1300. It's my first bike and im loving it. Still in the break in period though.
I am new rider and chose a red RF-1200. Love it so far, but hadn't had much time to play around with it...so was happy to see here that it has speaker pods!
I ended up getting this as my very first helmet. I also got the photochromatic shield. Wow is it awesome! It is always the perfect amount of tint and in the sun it gets darker then the smoke shield. You can't see my face which I love. Plus it has the pinlock insert too so no fog. It was about $170 but worth not having to ever switch out shields. I saved money by getting a plain black matte color instead of a design (which adds $100+ to the cost). The helmet is made for a bit of a tuck. I ride a cruiser so I do have to move my head down to see my gauge on my gas tank. However when I'm sitting up right I can see the road fine and when I lean a little when crusing fast I like that I can see everything well.
That's great they include the pinlock, one of the best and cheapest upgrades I ever purchased!
We have 6 graphic reviews up that show the new shell shape of the RF-1200 if you want to see more color options. Check out the new Beacon and Dominance graphics. ~Ali
Ordered myself one of these. Can't wait to try it out, I currently have an AGV k3 sv
Dan9156 I have a Large K3 and went with a large shoei. You should be fine with a Large. If it's too lose or too tight you can always buy smaller or bigger cheek pads. Just break it in first, it's amazing helmet!
The photochromatic faceshield is currently only available for the X-12, Qwest, and RF-1100 helmets. We hope to see this as an option for the RF-1200 this spring. -CK
I know that the GT-Air is super quiet so I didn't want to compare it to that. Knowing that it's as quiet or quieter than the RF-1100 was what I needed to know. Thank you!
Just got rf1200. My first hi end helmet. Ride r1200rt. Lower windshield to get enough air to vent. Quiet behind windshield. Especially when all way up. Snug safe feeling fit. Looks great with black and silver. Liked colorful blue but just to flashy for me.
As several folks have replied, it was the Mission RS. ~Ali
Unfortunately the cheek pads are not cross-compatible between the RF-1200 and the RF-1100. Good news is you can get the new CW-1 Transitions lens for your RF-1100 as an upgrade. ~Ali
Just got mine in the mail today. Shoei rf1200 valkyrie. Great fit, can't wait for it to warm up.
What kind of bike are you on? This would definitely be an upgrade from both, but the GT-Air still sits above with the added features like the Drop down Sun-Visor -CK
so much information and it doesn't look like you're reading from a script...GREAT reviews. Thanks a million for this and the many other videos.
Script? HA! Product geekout , my man. I'm just freestyling. - Anthony

I've always been impressed with your reviews. That's the reason why I buy my gear from RevZilla. You're articulate, know the products well and address common questions that riders may have, especially beginner riders. I got my first bike 3 years ago and picked up the RF-1100 b/c of your review and I'm glad I did.
If i could make one suggestion it would be that I would love to see a beginner riders' section on your site with explanations of common terminology and safety tips. And why ATGATT is so important. I cringe every time I pass another rider with no helmet.
Thanks again for your great customer service, keep up the good work.
Quieter than the RF-1100, yes. Quiet in general? Not as much as something like the Qwest or the GT-Air. Understand when buying a sport helmet, the emphasis will not be on noise level, whereas on touring helmets they pay much more attention to noise. -CK
Always first class reviews from Anthony!
Yes, that is the industry standard. Any longer and they run the risk of having the EPS liner break down, which makes it no longer protective. Over time heat and humidity changes cause this deterioration. -CK
have this helmet currently. So comfortable and quiet. You can tell they really put work on this helmet. Worth the extra cash if you're debating on this helmet or the 1100
Well said. -Hi-Viz Brian
Nothing confirmed from Shoei at this point. The X-12 is a bit more recent that the RF-1100 was, so I doubt we'll see it within the next calendar year. -CK
Great! I have the XR 1100 and I use it for track days. I am very happy with it. Seems that Shoei improved on the old model without compromising the strengths of the helmet. Anyway, I will wait for X-13 (X-Spirit 3) since I only use it on track!
I have this helmet (NXR marquez black ant in europe) for some months now. I replaced a shoei xspirit 2 kallio replica with it. it is a very good lightweight helmet. Compact and feels really snug ( i have placed thicker inserts and cheaks).
I find only one negative and this is the wind noise/buffeting and the air which comes inside EVEN WITH EVERYTHING CLOSED and side locked.
this occured from day 1 with or without rear luggage. i have tested and tried different combinations in the shiled mechanism. I went to the shoei authorized importer and he checked the base plate and made also some testing but not improved. compared to xspirit 2, even I don't drive at tuck position, with same bike and same windshield on it, imho I think that from somewhere air comes inside more than it should at least (well we are speaking for a helmet in an open road :-) )
I have experienced the same buffeting around the ears, especially once I start exceeding 100km/h (62mph), though I must say I still love the helmet to bits!
I would guess this beats the Qwest in wind noise, as the bottom opening and seal created by the cheek pads is more all-encompassing than the Qwest. ~Ali
I am looking for a new helmet what should I look for
It was good to actually see some footage on the bike wearing the helmet. You should try to do that more often.
I had such high hopes for this helmet! I am bummed about the rear spoiler looking like it was "added" to the helmet! I also am not a fan of the new side lock location! I can tell that is going to be a pain. I loved it on the side of my RF-1100. You can't accidentally engage or disengage it. Now, you'll be hitting it when fussing with the shield. Horrible design there. I'm sure it's comfy, it's a Shoei and they sure have that part figured out!
5:08 "But wait! There's more! This helmet NOW comes with TWO FLUFFY KITTENS! ABSOLUTELY FREE IN THE BOX!"
EUPHORIA3D WHAT?! I love fluffy kittens! -HVB
EUPHORIA3D Sadly I'm allergic. :'-( -DrewZilla
These really do offer a snug fit which is good because some brands a large is too loose but with the RF 1200 it fits nicely.
GT-Air for more touring, especially in hot weather. RF-1200 for every other riding scenario. ~Ali
We should see these start to arrive in early November. ~Ali
I can't wait to get this helmet. Getting my motorcycle license in 2 weeks!
Tough choice. Sounds like the Photochromatic lens is more of a need for you at this point. -CK
Yes, the RF-1200 will take any Bluetooth option with ease. -CK
I drank the kook-aid on the multiple sizing of the shells, and thought this would be smaller and lighter than your average helmet. I bought an RF-1200, and then compared it's size to my old HJC CL-12 (and an old Z1R). Both are size medium, and dimensionally they are pretty much identical (within about 1/2 inch width, length, and approx circumference.) I'll bet both of these 'lower grade' helmets are mediums based on a large shell.
I think people are assuming that these helmets are less 'bobblehead' looking, when in fact you should be taking measurements of the outside dimensions of the helmets to see if there is, in fact, any significant difference. From my measurements, there is none.
The most beautiful motorcycle helmet ever!
AGV Pista GP RR, Ruroc Atlas 2.0 : Are we Jokes to you?!?
I'm on a Triumph Bonneville. My Qwest is about 2 years old and I had an RF1100 before that (went down in it, replaced with Qwest). I've been in a constant debate on replacing it with an internal sun visor helmet but now that the photochrom lens is available with Shoei. I'm considering that an option as well. One thing is for sure , i'm sick of toting around two shields and would like the pinlock.
Shoei helms fit me, I am almost needing a new rf and this looks great
Haha 2:08
"They didn't want to mess with the good shi... thing."
I really like this helmet. Just bought the GT Air but I’m liking the looks of this one better. Going to sell my GT Air and get this 1200. Great review.
Technically, this should be better than the Pinlock insert since it won't be behind a UV blocking shield. Better tinting perhaps.
Nice! Liking the riding footage to that gives us an idea of how it would look, definitely getting this
a friend of mine bought the RF1100 and he was suffering from whistling noise at the top of the helmet. Does this newer version have the same problem?
Thank you and cheers :)
Is the whistling coming from the top of the faceshield or the top vents? Sometimes, new helmets need their faceshields adjusted to get the proper seal around the faceshield's gasket. This is done by loosening the baseplates, evenly pressing the faceshield against its gasket, and retightening the baseplates. I personally have this helmet and had to adjust my faceshield. Is your friend's riding position correct for the RF-1100's ¾ to tuck riding position? It's not a super quiet helmet but sometimes minor adjustments can do the trick. -Hi-Viz Brian
had a rf-1000 upgraded to rf-1100 and probably gonna go with the rf-1200
love shoei helmets!
I'm literally doing the exact same thing, ha! -Hi-Viz Brian
Thank god I waited and didnt get the GT Air. This has pinlock and telechromic lens while being snell approved. Great helmet. Love that they added a center vent up top.
Really like my RF-1100, looking forward to trying on an RF-1200 soon.
I think you will be impressed! -Hi-Viz Brian
I don't really know what you're talking about... but Nicely done, Guv'Na!!!
Quality review. Most likely my next helmet!
First helmet I ever got was the XR (RF) 1100 Warlord, when the model was brand spankin new and it is still awesome but need a replacement.
Please do a review of the Shoei RF-SR once y'all get some in please! I'm looking at getting a different helmet next season to replace the Icon Variant... the 1200 was on the short list, and then I saw a post about the RF-SR today! It's poised to bump the 1200 off my list!
Also, love the footage of Anthony looking like a badass on that Mission!
The best product and the reviewer!!!
Just ordered one of these to replace my Arai Vector 2, hope its a solid lid.
deciding between x14 and rf1200 is difficult, i love the aggressive looks, graphic option and customization features on the x14, but i like rf1200 for its versatility.
Unless you do track days, you don't really need the X-14. -DrewZilla
Yeah, the universal communication is a big boost for U-Clear. We also like that they include the ear bud option. Would you say Sena is the number one communicator in your opinion?
hugdeath929 I wouldn't call any Bluetooth communicator number one. The Sena is certainly a top contender. Each communicator has specific features that attract different riding styles. You can't go wrong with Sena, though. -Hi-Viz Brian
nice helmet. Im probably gonna buy it today or in the next days. Thx for the review
It would be better see it in a more light colour? The black one is too dark to see the differences
Like the review - EXCEPT for the statement... a step down is the Qwest and a step up is the X12. That's not true. These helmets serve different purposes.
I love my RF1100 but hate the fogging. I still don't understand how other manufacturers can make fog free visors on 250$ helmets (and have been for years) while Shoei still need a pinlock system....
Indeed, and with sexy graphics to boot! -CK
Looking forward to the new graphics choices
Definitely a plus, ruuman! -CK
great helmet at a great price...I am waiting for the transition shield ... any eta?
Cool,,,
A transition shield too. Very cool.
Good point
Leslie Sofarelli We're waiting too! Hopefully April for the Transitions shield for the RF-1200. -DrewZilla
RevZilla
good to know thx
only thing id miss from the rf1100 is the one piece spoiler on the back of the helmet
Glad I didnt pull the trigger on the rf1100 that was like 500 bucks definitely getting one of these now
Great company and website but it takes 5 days to ship items and about 3 weeks to arrive at your door.
Normally our average order ships from our warehouses in 1-2 days and arrives across the US in 1-3 business days depending on if it is shipping across country. Currently, given the large number of warehouses/vendors shut down during the COVID outbreak our times have increased. We apologies about that but are doing the best we can with the resources we have. If you have any other questions or concerns about your order or timeline on it, please feel free to reach out to our Gear Geeks at cs@revzilla.com or 877.792.9455. Ride safe, -Pat
From reviews below i would choose Schubert sr1??!!! Thanks for reviews below ;-) I still cant chose witch one i will buy... But im closer to the Schubert from all reviews i seen... But... :-( Hard choice... :-(
Nice review man... much appreciated. don't need a new bucket yet but I LOVE my rf1100 so I'm definitely upgrading soonish..
I think the RF-1200 has also less wind noise than the X-12 so more comfy.
I really like the X-12 i hope they won't change it :D
it is also a question of taste the design of the new RF 1200 is more looking like the RF 1000, which is very nice but won't beat the X-12 :p
I consider buying the SHOEI RF-1200 or the SHARK Race-R Pro.
Pricewise they are similar. 'Sharp' tested-wise the Shark seems to excel the side head protection test over the shoei :/
Don't know if this British helmet test is totally accurate, but another important factor for me is the vision field as i am not riding a super sport oriented bike. Which has the bigger of the two ?
CHEERS , Pete :)
+pg88corfu The SHARP tests aren't necessarily accurate for US-model Shoei helmets, because SHARP tests the UK/EU ECE-rated version of the helmet (Shoei NXR). The US-model RF-1200 is designed to pass the US DOT standard as well as the voluntary Snell standard. As for field of view, both are pretty similar, but the RF-1200 is better for 3/4 and upright riding positions. -DrewZilla
I buyed rf1200 in size s and it is hard to put it on/off thinking that my ears will tear off, but in it everthing ok feel snug. My head is 57cm. Must i go to m or stay on s?? Thanks
Tomislav Novak I am also 57cm and the Medium fits me best. I recommend going with a Medium. -Hi-Viz Brian
Brian, how come u never mention the U-Clear? Are the other two just that much better? My bike club uses the U-Clear 200 and we're all very happy with it.
hugdeath929 UClear makes a nice product. Their boomless technology is impressive. I also love the fact that they've introduced universal communication in their latest firmware upgrade. They've made a competitive run at Sena. It's a shame Cardo has not introduced universal communication. I'm sure it's only a matter of time. -Hi-Viz Brian
Just bought one.. Didn't realize design was THAT old! LOL Oh well it's a good helmet, I think I'll like it.
Still one of the class leading lids that a lot of companies are still trying to best. I think you made a great decision. Ride safe, -Pat
RevZilla thanks! Yup all my research kept pointing me back the RF-1200 for the kind of helmet I wanted, and the Tansitions face shield will be really nice. 👍
Have this helmet and i love it
Shoei nailed it with the RF-1200! -Hi-Viz Brian
I have this helmet and it’s making loud noises when the visor is up obviously lol but when I close my visor I hear this loud whistle sound that’s unbearable.
PLEASE RIDE MORE OFTEN WITH HELMETS!! It lets us really see how the helmet looks rather than just someone standing there.
Is that a Mission Motorcycle R that he is riding? That thing is so freaking cool, thinking about getting one. Keep up the great job with the reviews! :)
It sure is. -Hi-Viz Brian
Sold on the speaker pockets, i love my icon helmet collection but my scala speakers always move around
I love an expert...
Nice! Riding the Mission electric bike.
I wish the aesthetics were better, but I still plan on purchasing due to the transition shield option.
I think it looks bad ass
0Cereal0 Oh it's nice indeed. I think the GT Air & X FOURTEEN look better.
