    Another great (and timely) vid, since I’m looking at these two as well. I know they pitch the RF-SR for “upright riding”, but your comments make me want to consider the 1200 too. Thanks again!

    • @GearsGadgets
      @GearsGadgets  4 года назад +4

      Yeah I felt like the comments about upright riding steered me toward the RF-SR originally but after riding with the RF-1200 I really don't think its that much (if at all) different. The overall RF-1200 is absolutely better if you have the money to spend IMHO.

      @@GearsGadgets That's the exact question that brought me to your video. And the more I think about it, the more I don't really understand how the view would even change that much through any helmet. I mean, my eyes are always in the same spot... so provided the visor is across my eyes... what would make the view better in any design? Maybe I'm ignorant, but who knows.

    Everyone says the RF1200 (NXR) uses better materials than the RF-SR (RYD) - However, if you look at the SHARP tests (UK Government DfT) - the RF-SR scored 5 stars where as the RF1200 only got 4 stars - with more force passing through on the sides of the helmet. My opinion is that regardless of how premium the materials are, if they aren't in the right places or put together as well, then it's not worth it. Shuberth make expensive helmets using great materials and have loads of innovative features, but they only score about 3 stars in actual impact safety. I've been researching for a while and for an average oval head shape, I think the RYD is the safest, best looking and reasonably priced helmet out there.

      I appreciate the input. I really wouldn't argue anyone who has put in research on which helmet they feel best suited to protect their dome. Shoei has a great reputation and its my personal choice that I happen to trust. Ride safe and again, thanks for the input!!

    Excellent video! I usually advise new and/or inexperienced riders to buy the best helmet they can afford. And then ask the question, “How much is your head worth?” Usually I get a strange look and then, later, I see them wearing a Shoei or Aria. Both are excellent, quiet helmets! Thanks for this informative video. Ride safe my friend.

    I own both helmets and ride 2 different bikes, one upright and a sportbike in a tuck. The RF-1200 vents you may notice more airflow at speed when you tilt your head down a bit if you are riding upright. I have both helmets in white and really like the look of the RF-SR...stormtrooper look haha. Both helmets I like very much and both have their uses (for me!). Thanks for you video bud!

  • @BoZhaoengineering
    @BoZhaoengineering 4 года назад +4

    Hey, your video is the few comparisons of the two. RF1200 has tuck design and more aggressive aero dynamic design for sport bike. I just purchased SR yesterday and very pleased with detail and finish. SR is aimed at daily use and versatile for touring as well. It is the second lightest following RF1200 and the price is right. RF1200 and RF SR are called Z7 and RYD in Asian Market respectively.

    • @GearsGadgets
      @GearsGadgets  4 года назад +4

      Haha yeah the Ruroc 2.0 is certainly the talk of the town right now. I also think they have way more social media push than the established Shoei’s of the world where their reputation somewhat markets itself. I wouldn’t mind comparing the Shoei’s to a Ruroc at some point.

  • @roadglide
    @roadglide 4 года назад +5

    Shoei and Arai the best in the business, bar none. The RF-SR is slightly heavier than the RF1200. The RF 1200 is a step up in materials no question. One should expect about a 10% relax in materials due to a break in period. Helmet Fitment is most critical and most people purchase a size too large thinking it’s perfect. Use Shoei’s sizing for guidance and compare against actual fitment is best. The cheeks should feel and visually appear to be snug. A new helmet with good on/off technique should be a bit of squeeze to get in and off. There is a proper technique to correctly putting on a helmet on. Watch any Professional MotoGP racer and there is a commonality to the technique. IMHO, a top of the food chain helmet is the most important gear next to good boots, jacket and gloves. With a high percentage of uninsured motorists out there it’s telling that many people feel the extra cost of insurance is worth the gamble. Like the helmet-less riders. Go figure. That’s my spiel and I’m sticking with it. Ride safe and ride often.

    • @GearsGadgets
      @GearsGadgets  4 года назад

      I love the spiel. I have never tried an Arai but I think Shoei is amazing. I know the RF-1200 is definitely a little tighter than the RF-SR out of the box but its not too bad. I have a huge head so if it were uncomfortable I would feel it right away.

    • @killer2600
      @killer2600 3 года назад

      This is so true, about proper fitment, that shoei puts it in writing in their fitment manual. As they put it, if the helmet doesn't feel tight then it's too large. They also write the correct size helmet will often feel, to someone inexperienced in proper helmet fitment, too tight to pull onto ones head. I know from my own experience how easy it is to get the wrong size thinking it's perfect. Shoei charts show my head size falls between small and medium but trying on a brand new large feels perfect - it's comfortable, no pressure or pain points, goes on and off without difficulty, and isn't loose enough to roll up/down/side-to-side much on my head. If not for the feeling tight and breaking in aspect, I would almost think the large is my proper size even though the sizing charts place me no where near it. It only gets worse when "I have to pay for this thing" gets factored in and the helmet is an expensive purchase. Do I buy the helmet that feels most comfortable or do I follow the advice of others and buy the one that I think is tight and not very comfortable? I have to pay for it and live with it. All this explains for me why stats indicate majority (> 50%) of riders wear a helmet that is too big.

  • @saddle8bag
    @saddle8bag 4 года назад +4

    You will likely find that the venting in the RF isn't too great for most cruisers. Most of those sport lids don't flow air very well unless you're in a bit of a tuck. Might do okay on a HD though since we're always looking down to see our speedos. ;)

    • @GearsGadgets
      @GearsGadgets  4 года назад +1

      For me on my Heritage the RF-SR wasn’t bad at all, actually performed better than expected. The RF-1200 is definitely flowing a littler better. Only issue I have is the chin vent doesn’t get a ton of air because of the windscreen but it still flows okay. I’m guessing rider height and different cruisers make the experience differ quite a bit.

      I’ve heard that about the RF SR being tuned more for upright riding, too. A Revzilla video said they prefer the SR for upright riding. But it was unclear if they meant they prefer it over the 1200 for upright or if they preferred the SR for upright more than for racing. I know Shoei does not recommend the SR for racing. Whatever. I have the SR and only ride upright within the legal speeds. Seems perfect to me. Can’t imagine how there could be $85 worth of improvements made to it. But maybe if I rode >85mph for long periods of time, I’d appreciate any difference more.

    • @Ritalie
      @Ritalie 4 года назад

      I think the drop down visors inside the helmet, create an opening inside the helmet of empty space which might *might* create some additional noise. The RF-1200 has better reviews on forums (just random forum comments) that say it is quieter than the GT Air series. I bought a new Strada II and its a really nice helmet, very high quality. But it is extremely loud. Not from whistling or any bad design problems. It doesn't whistle at all at any angle. But the Strada shell seems to transmit noise through the padding, like a giant plastic speaker. Like when you're in an airplane and you can hear the air rushing over the paper thin aluminum body, despite the airplane being air tight. It seems to be a hard composite shell that is brittle and creates noise, but this is just a theory. I now think that plastic helmets are better than lightweight fiber-matrix helmets. Lightweight helmets don't seem to be good, in terms of overall noise prevention. If you don't have a windshield, the RF-1200 with the ear pads option (you need to buy ear pads that fit in it) would be a good option. Or a SR. Or make your own ear pads for the Strada II. The problem with the Strada is that I don't like the gasket design.

    I have a Shoei RF-SR. I've been riding with it for three or 4 month. I know that is is a great helmet. But, the problem I'm having is rear neck sourness. After a couple of long rides, the back of my neck is really soar and tight. Thought it may be due to coming of winter when I don't do a lot of riding. But, yesterday while riding. I noticed that the front helmet seamed to want to slide down. Sort of like the helmet is front heavy. Putting stress on the back of my neck. Don't know if this make any sense to anyone, but my neck sure feels it. Anyone else has this problem? The helmet is snug on my head. Don't think i could fit in anything smaller.

      Hey,it's me again on the Shoei. The front of my helmet wasn't sliding down as much as it just seamed to be heavy toward the front.

      Really? I don't really know what to tell you with that because I didn't experience that at all. Everyone's heads are different so its really hard to "give advice" on a helmet aside from general stuff. Sorry to hear about that.

      @dalemeche7276 4 года назад

      Well I figured out the problem. The helmet was too big. Went back to where I bought it. And they ordered one. Rode almost 500 miles with the new helmet. Didn’t have any problem what so ever. Nothing better than a proper fitting helmet.

    The RF-1200 is old as the hills. RF-SR is the newer design.

    • @GearsGadgets
      @GearsGadgets  4 года назад

      TG the RF-SR is a more budget friendly version of the RF-1200 which is a slightly more premium helmet. While the RF-SR is newer that does not mean it is better.

      @@GearsGadgets the rf-sr scored a 5 star sharp rating, rd1200 got 4.So the rf-sr in certainly better in terms of safety.

    Why are you shilling the RF1200. I own this and it's definitely a noisy helmet. So,,, all that, not much [worse] than the SR type of comments.,,, always equal or better than type of comments are truly annoying. You are compensated by that store,,, and I distinctly recognize your attempt to cover up for the deficiencies. Stop that.

    • @GearsGadgets
      @GearsGadgets  3 года назад

      Well Justin. It is quite possible that I personally LOVE the RF1200 over the RF-SR and that I personally don’t think it is a loud helmet. It is also quite possible that you and I have different heads, different ears, different motorcycles, and different opinions. I have also since switched to the RF-1400 and love it even more. I also love the conspiracy of the coverup even though I clearly disclosed in the video it was sponsored. Sorry man but your gripe and accusation of some coverup is illegitimate. I’m just one dude with one opinion, feel free to fire up your own camera and produce a video about why I am wrong. Nothing stopping you.
