3:15: AI is not going to cause an idiocracy, people are already very skeptical against it. The LLM AI hype might crash very soon though, causing huge problems on the market, and also huge trouble for legit AI research, such as on machine learning. It would be better if a critical crowd of technicians shout down the illicit LLM companies that are only fishing for money down, so that the hype slows down and bursting bubbles are avoided.
hope you make a video explaining how to do a minimal install of debian kde
Bit worried about /tmp in memory.. Isn't one of the primary purposes of the temp folder to store data that can't easily fit in system ram? In practice, paging to disk doesn't work very well on Linux, and kinda defeats the point
No. You are thinking of the SWAP partition, which can also be a file. The SWAP partition is an extension of the memory (RAM) and cannot be used for anything else.
The purpose of the /tmp folder is to temporarely store things that the system unpacks. For example when you use a file manager to look inside a tarball or a Zip file without extracting it. Some file managers - like the Midnight Commander in the terminal - do an actuall unpacking and save it in the /tmp folder, and then show you the content. And when you are done looking at the content and move to another folder, the unpacked content is erased.
This folder is automatically cleaned out completely on every boot, and nothing should rely on storing things there to be available on system reboot.
There is another tmp folder, /var/tmp which is Not autmatically cleaned out. Things stored there can rely on things to be there after a reboot.
Linux needs to use both free and proprietary stuff in its system to compete with windows and macs.
Hey Tom, have you reported on the new apt UI that will come with Debian 13 and all the other Debian-based distros? I might have missed it if so, it reminds me of "Nala" and will make everything easier to read.
I believe we covered it when first announced on the Linux news a few month ago.
@@SwitchedtoLinux Oh, ok!
We don’t need ai to be too intelligent then we could end up with a scenario like in terminator
but Tom! ollama is fun! just uses a lot of power to abuse an LLM 😂
Sir How do a new user can install Arch Linix (Hyprland - Nvidia/AMD GPU ) or Open Suse Tumbleweed as daily driver and do basic things like, Video editing, Web Browsing, watch OTT's & RUclips, System Backup, Important Firewalls setup and other security + privacy things.
AI,in my opinion, will keep humanity alive as long as they are the least resource demanding hands and legs for servicing it. We have yet to reach that stage but creating an entity that is smarter data wise than ourselves is NOT a good thing."Computers make excellent servants but I have no wish to serve under them" Mr Spock STOS Season 2 episode 24.
Dunno if I trust Kaspersky enough to run it on my system.
A glowing backdoor is still a glowing backdoor, doesn't matter where it came from.
Yeah, I feel the same way about Solarwinds and Crowdstrike. Both CIA startups according to In-Q-tel.
Not going to install Kaspersky on my system 😂
While it moved to the UK, chances are they still have strong ties with Russia.
I'm with you on no AI I don't like it I can't talk to inanimate objects
Kaspersky still has headquarters in Moscow, right?
I don't expect Linux to be completely immune against malware and viruses, the more people use it, the more likely someone will tailor malware for Linux (besides the usual hacking attempts), remember the Chernobyl virus? A guy decided to challenge antivirus companies and succeeded beyond expectations. And since the Linux updates are less frequent (that's how I understand it, a beginner here) than virus databases for Windows antivirus/antimalware tools, I expect there will be issues. I am rather sceptical than overly naïve that Linux is somehow immune.
GIGO
I'll tell you what I use AI for. Chatgpt. I use it.for terminal syntax and diag with kubuntu. I'm still pretty green with linux and it's been a big help. Other than that.... I'll pass.
Go Kaspersky!
(Free as in gratis, not as in libre.)
Kremlin antivirus no thank you
Nope I wouldn't run Kaspersky and I don't think you need it.
The problem running Windows or Linux on a laptop is you are likely not to have a brand new one and this is even worse. It's almost like not even having a battery because it don't last no time. Even a brand new laptop only lasted me 4 hours. This is where Android Chromebooks or the iPad wins.
I guess you could buy a full blown Windows tablet like the Surface Pro, but they are extremely expensive.
Phones and tablets have taken over the market. Unless you work in an office or go to school, there is absolutely no reason to own a laptop or home computer. Most people can do everything they need on a phone and it's very handy!
Finally IBM was right after all.
