Julia Holter is simply one of the greatest minds in music today. Absolute genius.
Props to the sound guys on this. It's damn not easy to mix this sonic delirium of electronic and acoustic instruments all together. Good job.
completely agree. never heard a bad or even mediocre mix from the KEXP live performance space.
@@OBear07 the mix for Wooze's recent session has basically no bass in it. Real shame.
I love how she credits her sound engineer as a band member. You miss a lot of what she's going for if the layering and sounds are muddled too much.
Kenny Gilmore is a beast
No but really, KEXP mixes are often better than the original records
Les Jeux To You - 0:33
Chaitius - 6:58
Words I Heard - 23:33
I Shall Love 2 - 31:23
She sucks at explaining her music and I love it.
I know right? Really cute!
Noou she did really gave me a glimpse of what is she experiencing during composition, you try to find something to portray and when you have it, you dont realize what you have crafted either how you get it, isnt really what you begin with at all anymore, its kinda like trying to describe a dream with its details, but you dont really see clearly what it is so you have half of it, like you know where you are but dont know how you get there, or what are you doing. She mixes a lot of emotions there. So precious
Exactly. Charming to be more introspective and not "salesman" about music. She communicates very well with just the music, that's enough.
Unbelievable how she can blend the classical and contemporary music worlds. Pure art
God she’s a fucking genius
I love how much she stumbles, but then plays and everything feels so clear and forward.
I was so astonished when after travelling to different country (almost to a different continent) to attend her live show I found out that there were barely 100 hundred person among the public. But, if anything it helped the whole atmosphere (Linz, Austria, sudden wind and the rain from nowhere, but the concert itself indoors) . She allures to middle ages, but it was something like pre-historic.
Love Cheryl Waters, she’s been my doorway into so much amazing new music. Love this amazing band, what a find.
I don't wanna watch KEXP if it's not mrs.Waters
THANK YOU SHARON!!
Tight musicians at play. Wonderful sounds of clarity in emotional releases, to say the least. Many thanks for this gift.
Words I Heard is so magical and beautiful
thank you julia for my life
Julia Holter is a straight up genius, I enjoyed this so much, thank you!
Addendum: a trippy genius😉
The climax on I Shall Love 2 is incredible live
I adore Julia!!! She's a genius..
I like how Les Jeux To You sounds experimental without disintegrating into random bullshit. It retains its beauty while it pushes the bounds of the song's structure. Never straying so far that it loses connection to the original idea.
corey fogel is just one of them amazing drummers
Stunning. Julia Holter’s performances on KEXP are amazing!
I've been watching these performances for years and this was the one I got to attend!
Wow. Holter never ceases to blow my mind... via my ears.
I love her. How the whole world doesn't know her is a travesty. It's high art.
It really is. This sort of thing isn't deemed important enough now
The whole world in you knows her
True about soooo many artists. Seems like everybody is poisoned by the stryknin of rap
*tragedy

AMAZING I never thought les jeux could be preformed tha well!!!!
Who the hell doesn't like Julia Holter?
A mi
Some of us didn’t know
Don't "like" Julia Holter, LOVE Julia Holter.
She's a genius.
First song: "ok all you 50 people in the room with a different instrument, on 3 just go bazerk....ready?.....and GO!!!!
That description sounds exactly like the first song on her album "Aviary" she's promoting here. The song is "Turn The Light On" and it is a cathartic mess of instruments all screaming to showcase extasy over each other.
It's a mess but somehow it still makes sense musically once you get used to it, it's very clearly tonal, perhaps a bit arhythmic but still very much in a major scale, which tells us it's not an accident.
Cruly anticipated, was a complete worth.
Les Jeux to You always gets me so excited!
Oh, God, Chaituis was stunning. I got goose bumps.
Words I Heard, I Shall Love 2... I just love everything she does!
I hope I'll see her live again. I attended her concert in Mexico City (2 years ago?), it was delightful.
My first thought was
There are so many days of rain
In Mexico City
A good reason to go
You know I love to run away from sun
@@hq880 it was really special to me when she sang Feel You ❤️😭❤️

Music of the spheres, wonderful!
Beautifully weird in my favorite way. These sounds truly take you on a cinematic journey so vivid, I see the characters bounce around in a completely different world in my mind. Thank you to Julia, the band, and KEXP for taking me out of my own experience for a moment.

Find and shame asap... hey like what you like imo but downticking talents like Julia Holter's is dumb asf
WHAT THE HELL IS THAT CIRCUITRY ON THE TRUMPET
enparticular probably a pickup that allows the sound to be transferred via 1/4 in. cable. I could be wrong though.
Tashi Wada at ruclips.net/video/cy6KJr-49ZY/видео.html... wow.
Interesting
x2
'I survived Matt Mondanile.'

Sth Between Kate Bush, Siouxsie, b52,(Tori Amos, Pj) and more. Love her.
Blade Runner
Oh my god thank you. I was wondering if that was a correlation I only made bc I was high when hearing it or if it was legitimately alike
Refreshing?
It's nice; a bit comparable to Aurora regarding the etherical dimension impression. But there is a lot of precedents...
When talking, she has a lot of mimics from Taylor SWIFT I assume she admires (me too) personally. (In the voice but also using often : "like" e.g.) (or tessitura : "I don't had an idea" (19:18))
She explicitly denied having any "strategy" as a method for inspiration/creation except to be nourished by culture: especially literature -- among others arts (also "visuals") -- and letting these materials 'chemically-reacting' together and surge after via synth or sounds but she underlined that texts are put/grafted after on the untangled mess! (The expression: 'Palimpsest ("layer") of memory' could sum-up her vision on that.)
However, I felt she would aim at some targets commercially -- and I agree with WATERS that music is a job that demands so much hardships, talents, skills and perseverance even if nevertheless it is still risky in addition to remains difficult to survive economically, because "many are called, but few are chosen"... So, there should not be any kind of embarrassment for artists nor radio, a fortiori non-profit ones as KEXP, in doing advertisements in exchange of free performances donated to the enjoyment of old and young listeners alike -- that I guess were cinema or video games. She mentioned "play", "word game" a couple of time (30:52) and there is a huge market for music that could be heard during hours in loop without bore or cause seasickness! I think she (successfully) is right on in that respect and also can match with an other segment: the mystics/spirituals, new-ages of the era in which we are fit well and aspire to a new genre of what was labeled as : "fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heavenly_voices" as suggested by the titled "aviary" of her album all the more so for workers in the service industry whom concern is to escape from stress generated by noisy or even nasty colleagues to stay focus and healthy in spite of forced pace that are another type of cadence and rhythm coevolving since time immemorial...
Conclusion: as she said politic and personal are meshed together and form the context for expression, there is always an intent/desire and a plan or biais in humain's actions, consciously and explicitly or not.
Although I need to hear more to be sure. Sorry for my lengthiness but I rather speak 'rarely' and deeply than everywhere superficially.
By the way, 2 etymologies given by Wiktionary are :
"From Middle English sound, sund, from Old English sund (“the power, capacity, or act of swimming; swimming; sea; ocean; water; sound; strait; channel”), from Proto-Germanic *sundą(“swimming; sound”), from Proto-Indo-European *swem- (“swimming; sea”). Cognate with Dutch sond (“sound; strait”), Danish sund (“sound; strait; channel”), Swedish sund (“sound; strait; channel”), Icelandic sund (“sound; strait; channel”). Related to swim."
"From Middle English sound, sund, isund, ȝesund, from Old English sund, ġesund (“sound, safe, whole, uninjured, healthy, prosperous”), from Proto-Germanic *gasundaz, *sundaz(“healthy”), from Proto-Indo-European *sunt-, *swent- (“vigorous, active, healthy”).
Cognate with Scots sound, soun (“healthy, sound”), Saterland Frisian suund, gesuund (“healthy”), West Frisian sûn (“healthy”), Dutch gezond (“healthy, sound”), Low German sund, gesund (“healthy”), German gesund (“healthy, sound”), Danish sund (“healthy”), Swedish sund (“sound, healthy”). Related also to Dutch gezwind (“fast, quick”), German geschwind(“fast, quick”), Old English swīþ (“strong, mighty, powerful, active, severe, violent”). See swith."
She sings like a bird, her hair's a tousled mess, and I love her.
Overly dramatic and lyrical
Great voice - shame about the racket they're making.
epic reaction
Hahahahaha
