  • This is a big moment in my life. I just bought a truck I built a long time ago and thought was gone forever. By pure chance during Power Tour '16 I ran into Justin Padfield of Scott's Hot Rods. He's owned this '67 Chevy that I built back in 2007 for nearly a decade. It was unfinished when I sold it to him and it still is but I'm stoked to have it back because it's the baddest truck I've ever built. There will be many episodes about the rebirth of this truck on Finnegan's Garage as I fix the broken stuff, add more power under the hood and finish what I started. This episode will show you the good, the bad and the ugly of my favorite Chevy truck.

    Tilt bed suggestion: Build an oversized version of a double-arm hood pivot mechanism between the storage recesses in the bed and the fuel tank. With the right arm ratio and stops, the bed should initially move straight up enough to allow the roll pan to clear the ground, then rotate back as the arms reach the end of their travel.

      thats actually a really good idea.

    • @cudak888
      @cudak888 7 лет назад +5

      Let me take it one step further (but also one step further to breakage too by sheer complexity): If this idea doesn't get enough initial ground clearance, put the entire rear pivot on a cam, and operate the cam off the lower pivot arm. With the right ratio, not only will the bed rise up with an inch or two of extra clearance initially, the entire pivot mechanism will drop that distance once the cam rotates back down.
      Come to think of it, the whole system would be pretty slick if operated off the compressor system that runs the airbag suspension.

      Or just go old school and do a double diamond zrack...all the basics have already been figured, and he could even use air rams in place of the hydraulics....but hey...what do I know??? right Finnegan????....lol...

      @Adam It's a fair question, and one I can't really put my finger on. Cleetus Mcfarlanes channel is the same. I've watched his story on his starting. He's genuine and honest. I like the guy, but the shows seems to cheesy I guess. His black, blown BBC camaro I don't mind.

    Tilting the box will just be for show, so take some lift axle air bags from a big rig and put them about 18" in front of the pivot point on the box. You already have the air supply. It would set you back about $150.

    If it were me I would update the air management system, go through the brakes, go through the suspension, keep the wheels, replace the tires with a sticky compound, and I would do something crazy and swap an EcoBoost 3.5 twin turbo V6 with a 6 speed manual of some sort. Why would I go for such a crazy swap (especially mixing a Ford drivetrain in a C10)? Because it would be something fast, handle like it's on rails, and most importantly, it would be something that you'll probably NEVER see again. Call me crazy, but that right there would be worth it to me alone. Well, that, and I'm turbo crazy and the EcoBoost just blows my mind as to its capability and it's longevity. I'm sure you'll go V8 turbo (*cough, cough Tom Nelson NRE engine) which is more than cool with me, but I figured that I would at least give you my opinion. Undoubtedly this is going to be something sick when it's done. Thanks Mike!

    • @sukiaki96
      @sukiaki96 7 лет назад

      Only problem I think would be dealing with the heat that it'll put out, would need to find a better way to get air into the engine. It looks like a tight squeeze for a v8 but that may just be from the video. The power you get out of the ecoboost is amazing and it actually would fit in due to there being an explorer rear end in it already.

    Hey Finn u asked4 suggestions so here goes. U’ve so much time& effort invested I c u going in a completely new direction. Here is1 that honors your labors& harnesses the full length of that8 year temporal lever.
    1. Enhance the bed exactly as u envisioned w/a nice tilt +5th wheel &hitch connection 4the rear of that beautiful hand built frame. That way she can show &tow.
    2. Remove that dated integral gearbox &install a full electric rack& pinion. This will modernize her& cleanup your engine bay.
    3. Install a scroll type electric A/C compressor & electric cabin heater2 modernize her& clean up your engine bay.
    4. Install advanced LED halo style main lighting similar to the Challenger &complete the look all the way around her.
    5. Install a roll cage, antilock braked &airbags. These items r often overlooked in resto-mods.
    6. Finally, consider finding a donor TESLA Model S to harvest the battery& running gear for installing in her engine bay &in place of that fuel tank.
    7. Failing the all electric option I would like 2c u install a novel power plant like a gas turbine or a koenigsegg cam-less engine or desmodromic valved engine, etc. This truck is so special that I think she requires some out of the box thinking even beyond 2020. Don’t 4get2 put a drier on your new air management system.
    Finn even if u reinstall another fossil fuel engine, the other suggestions will greatly simplify your engine bay& relieve u of parasitic drags associated w/more complex accessory drive systems. I’m an old NIASE Master Tech turn Administrator long ago & now retired. Personally I would love 2cu drive her daily after she is all tricked out. U don’t have 2b loud. U need not honor the past. She can b what U want her 2b &we will b watching u, dreaming thru u& your efforts. Good luck brother. I will b watching.

    I definitely have to say that this is one if not the best "Mini" truck with independent rear suspension that I have ever seen, I was truly blown away when you raised and lowered the rear suspension on how minimum the camber changed throughout the up and down movement of the suspension, I owned my own shop for a lil over 10 years building custom cars, trucks, and bikes, the best vehicle that I built is a 94 GMC Suburban that took 3rd place at the end of the Lowrider tour show that was in Las Vegas which I am proud to say pissed off a few lowrider there because, first off, she was literally the only vehicle there that wasn't on wire wheels which is normally a requirement to be considered a "lowrider" second, this was the first and only Lowrider show she had ever been in which was a feat in its own because the rules for the Lowrider show in Vegas state you had to win 3rd or better at several shows that are part of the Lowrider tour so it was asked to be at the show in Vegas by the people who run the tour, these are not the only things that pissed people off, the Suburban was the only show vehicle in the show that didn't have full chromed out suspension components, to hell, she didn't even have chromed out parts under the hood, the motor is completely stock with the exclusion of the K&N filter and intake tube, very few mini truckers out there spend a ton of money chroming thousands of parts under the hood, let alone under their vehicle or on their suspension, the Suburban is a daily driver so the frame is filthy, dirt and rocks, pebbles, etc. are in every nook cranny under the vehicle unless it's a trailer Queen and not driven to take kids to school or pick them up, now don't get me wrong, the customer who is now a very close, personal, and family friend has done just about anything you can think of to the body, she is fully shaved, door handles, tail lights, body molding, all found their respectful place in the scrap pile, the second set of doors were suicided, a 40"x 70" sliding rag along with an electric sunroof were installed into the roof, 99 Toyota Supra tail lights were frenched into the barn door, she had a full multi media system was installed in the interior along with a PlayStation 2 (top of the line at the time of course) her system was amazing with mids and separates installed in all 6 doors along with TV's installed in the back 4 doors, along with 2 flat screen TVs installed in the custom center counsel, the stereo system easily hit 256db while playing "Lamb of God" The 2 front bench seats were removed and replaced with 4 Racing seats complete with 4 point racing harnesses (just because our cub motto was " Dare 2 B Different") she wasn't sponsored by anyone so everything that was done, was covered by hard earned cash, the paint job after everything was painted in the interior, under the hood, and the exterior of the truck, complete with air brush work that consisted of skulls that appeared to be resting on rock under the black base coat with lightning bolts shooting out from under the paint job, skulls and lightning bolts painted through out the interior, finished off with the woman from Ozzy Osborne's Ultimate sin album cover airbrushed on the hood on top of the black base coat followed with a blue pearl, the skulls and rock are exposed by the base appearing to rip and peal to expose everything underneath, the Suburban sat on a full air bag suspension, uses half inch valves and D.O.T air line, 2 Fair compressors, a 5 gallon D.O.T Saddle tank normally equipped on a big rig with an emergency shrader valve hidden behind the rear frenched in license plate just in case the compressors fail so the tank can be filled to get her home, she has only had 2 air bags and one compressor replaced since the system was installed roughly 10 years ago, yes I know I'm rambling on but it was an honor having a hand in building this bad ass truck that has won at every show she has entered and is still on the road today

    I never understood people whining about lowered trucks. Saying things about how trucks are made to haul and work. I have bad news for 90% of the cars you modified. They weren't meant to go fast or race either. Most are family cars and commuters. A truck is a great platform for good "bones". Most of the time, people have to stiffen cars chassis' because of being a unibody. Trucks come with frames already. Just a thought.

  • @deimosian
    @deimosian 7 лет назад

    Tilt bed, for that low of a truck, you're going to want to have hinges between the frame and a couple arms that the bed slides on, those arms will have two air cylinders each to the frame and to the bed. So, with the truck up, you tilt the bed back, then you lift the bed up to be higher than the frame, then you set the truck down. Lets you have the bed totally vertical, tailgate/bumper on the ground right behind the end of the frame.

  • @partmonster0704
    @partmonster0704 7 лет назад

    Rib the floor of the truck bed (chrome rails) and install plexiglass panels in the same direction as the original wood. You will get a semi-functional truck bed, minus the trouble of a tilt bed, and still see the awesomeness beneath.

    I used to build dump trailers, the only way to have a dump bed without scraping in my semi expert opinion would be to beef up the roll pan and hinge the bed as far back as you can. Or possibly have four independent lift cylinders where the back two raise a few inches and the front raises as far up as you want the tilt. Hope this helps. Beautiful truck also.

    I did the exact same thing to my 2001 Ford ranger. The ride alone was unreal compared to a solid rear end. The reason I changed the whole rear end from the cab back is because I got rear-ended and the frame got bent and it was my daily driver in highschool. My mom and dad were school teachers so they couldn't help me with money so I had to build it right the first time and I was a runner for a lawyer and drove 200 to 250 miles a day. I saw it on another car years ago.
    The guy used a remote to lower the window , and then, after the window was down he would reach in and push down on the door lock which actually was connected to the door latch.
    So, buy pushing down on the lock, activated the door latch.

    Sure wish I could find the two cars I built when I was younger... 1973 Mazda RX2 with a 400ci Pontiac motor and trans out of a 1972 Pontiac Catalina...1969 9 inch Mercury Cougar rear end...most fun/danger I think I have ever been in a car. My other car was 1977 Pontiac Astre with 1972 Cadillac Eldorado 501ci with the trans-axle all mounted in the back of the Astre. Narrowed the arms/axles so the whole deal fit inside the contour of the Astre. Interior was all 1978 Monza...home made headers and the rear lid was from a 1975 Vega. A friend of mine named Tom Garcia was the real brains/talent behind these creations but together we made some really wild stuff that was mostly dangerous but lots of fun. Never laughed so hard in my whole life during the times we would build things... If you ever run out of odd ideas for cars on RoadKill I still have a bunch of as yet never built. I was hoping my son would get the bug but he never did...maybe my grand kids will.?

    Go 4 hydraulic Rams and make the truck bed lift straight up, it would be awesome to have the bed lowered down and then air down your bags, it goes from a ridiculous hight to being insanely low to the ground, the maintenance aspect of a a vertical lift bed is a mini truckers dream with the bonus of looking good, hope to hear back cheers from Australia :)

    You lucky thing! I had a Yam TZR125 motorcycle I'd love to get back - you got your youth-hood dream truck back, and your current fleet means you can build that dream without compromises like tow hitches and whatnot that you'd have had to have done if you'd done it 8 years ago! I have to admit, I don't share your enthusiasm for the truck, but I love how much you love it! Build your dream and show it to us!

  • @boomboombam7

    I'm no expert Mr. Finnegan but I think for the bed to flip up like you want it to you would have to use two shocks or whatever they're called and have the rear one raise up along with the front one; have the rear one stop and a certain point and the front one continue to travel in order for the bed to flip back. I love watching your show and I wish I had friends like you who are so creative and talented at customization.

    cantilever the tilt for the bed , angled arms attached solid to the bed at the rear (think of how a hood hinge works , brings the hood forward away from the cowl , then up ) , and let them pivot at the frame , and use traditional electro hydro lift installed backwards of how they usually are , it will push the bed back and up at the rear , and raise at the front like a dump truck ,this method does require a power up , and down hyd set up to work , I hope my description makes sense , I was once into dragging the ground , and had to overcome the ground clearance to tip the bed up ...

      2 issues
      1 he intends to put battery in one compartment. that would add a considerable length to the cables required and put your power supply at risk when raising and lowering as the cable may get pinched stretched or just wear over time
      2 if other compartment holds beverage, raising the bed will put it out of reach

    Double axis hinges with spring loads first lifts and moves the bed up and away from the cab then the second hinge has a heavy duty spring which takes the weight of the bed and tips it back n hey presto will also need a fixing to hold the the first spring loaded hinge and the whole bed in place like a few longish bolts into captive nuts under the bed then a recessed cover for them if you wanted to be extra slick

    I have the 402BBC MK4 with a Crane 260/272 flat tappet cam. I also prefer a Qjet or a spread bore Holley both with factory intake. Mind you, the BBC's inhale very well but do not exhale very well.
    For a 402 to live happily, better fasteners are needed head to heel. I have a handful of them.
    The. MK4 BBC will not use oil or leak if you let her idle for 5 minutes before usage. I don't care what the temperature is, just it works. And good luck on finding a 402.

I had to install a slow bleed regulator so it wouldnt slam down it lowered at 6 inches a second . I also installed a scissor lock incase a ram blew out .
