Sabarmati Riverfront is a waterfront development project on the banks of the Sabarmati River in Ahmedabad. Completed at a cost of around Rs 12 billion, the project has become a major tourism hub in Ahmedabad. Atal Pedestrian Bridge, a triangular truss bridge on the Sabarmati riverfront, is themed around the famous Kite Flying Festival of Gujarat. Inaugurated in 2022, the 300-meter-long and 14-meter-wide pedestrian bridge at the center is constructed of 2,600 metric tons of steel pipes. Named after former Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the footbridge symbolizes the city's commitment to sustainable urban planning and infrastructure development.
Sabarmati Ashram, which was Gandhi's abode is located about six kilometers from the Sabarmati river front. Spread over 36 acres on the banks of the Sabarmati River, this complex has many buildings that bear witness to the history of India's freedom struggle. Gandhiji lived here for 12 years along with Kasturba Gandhi and his followers like Vinoba Bhave. It was from here that Gandhi led the Dandi March that led to the Salt Satyagraha on March 12, 1930.
Gandhi Memorial Museum, called Sangrahalaya houses a rich collection of artefacts, photographs, manuscripts and personal items that give a comprehensive insight into the extraordinary life and philosophy of Gandhiji, who said, 'My life is my message'. The exhibits at the museum chronicle Gandhiji's journey as a leader, activist and philosopher, his pivotal role in India's freedom struggle and his advocacy of social justice, non-violence and communal harmony.
A major attraction of the ashram is the Hrida Kunj which is the residence of Gandhiji. This modest building was the residence of Gandhiji and his wife Kasturba. Gandhi developed and refined his philosophy of truth and non-violence within the walls of the heart. It was here that he conducted many discussions and experiments in communal life, simplicity and self-reliance.
The Sabarmati Ashram was not only a centre of political activity but also a centre of social reform and social development. Today, the ashram stands as a living monument to Gandhi's enduring legacy, attracting visitors from all over the world who come to learn about his life and philosophy.
