I’ll always consider the Metal Sonic boss battle to be one of my favorites in video games purely for the uniqueness of it being a race/fight.

It also feels so tense and hard when you slow down from losing rings or having to go up a hill when not fast enough. And Eggman's there ready to shoot his laser beam of death from not being fast enough. And if you don't get in front of metal sonic he just closes the door on you as you have to wait for your death from the laser from Eggman. But it is fun boss fight though even though it can be tough to jump over each obstacle and have to go faster than the boss in the boss fight.

Sonic CD gets a lot of flak for its weird level design, but for me its what makes it so unique. Having to travel to the past to destroy the machines encourages exploration, something the other Sonic games don't really do a whole lot of. And that soundtrack! People swear by Sonic 2, but dare I say that I enjoy Sonic CD more just for its charm.

    • @Nielzabub
      @Nielzabub 2 года назад +1

I would really love to see the time travel mechanic return. Yes, in CD, the signs can be frustrating. And there's no reason to go to the future until you've destroyed both machines. But I think there's still a lot of potential there. I'd love a sonic game where the time travel is based on the direction you run, so you still have that cool explorer aspect of needing to find the best places in the level where you can time travel, but without that frustration of touching the wrong sign and having to restart the level. If polished and worked on, it could be a really fun mechanic for either future 3D or 2D Sonic games.

8:00 I mean that was the intent with all Sonic games even Sonic 1, they just didn't have time to do it beyond Green Hill zone, they put all their focus on that... and every level after was linear slow paced side scrolling. 2 and CD not only changed the Sonic franchise's landscape, but gaming in general. 2 yeah was more speed based, but still touted exploration, the whole idea of speed was behind your own capability, otherwise Sonic ironically was more about exploration than speed. You take a lower route it's more enemies, slower, treacherous with spikes and pit falls, take a higher route moderate speed, lots of collectibles and rewards, you want to go fast you stay for the most part on the straight and narrow, down the middle, occasionally taking an upper path maybe as some speed runners do. So even Sonic 2 had these aspects, that was the intent behind the entire franchise from day 1, what pushed Sonic to doing what other companies and especially Nintendon't, with Mario, Castlevania, Megaman, Sonic not only had speed but multiple routes to take to get to one goal, the best Mario could do this was a secret pipe that lets you skip levels and gameplay... that's not a game, that's taking the easy way out to skip large chunks of gameplay.
Then CD being made at the same time took it a step further. You not only affected the speed, you affected the game's difficulty setting. You can blow past the game gotta go fast, and everything like Sonic does... but then the game gets harder, boss fights get more difficult because you didn't take your time to save everyone, so you get the bad ending. You take your time, slow down, go to the past, explore, destroy holograms, robot making machines, and collect timestones, you get the good ending (however should be noted, if you want to do all of that, you need to save the last timestone for the last level, you collect it before all the machines and holograms are destroyed, the game bugs out and you get a bad good ending not the good ending). This is why I love CD, even more than 3&K, I love all the classic games in their own right (except 1 ullgh no thanks), but CD after I played it back in 2011, easily became one of my favorite Sonic games, nay one of my favorite games I've ever played. Really is unfortunate Origins butchered it and the other games a little bit.

You forgot to mention the holograms, also you can't get the good ending by getting the time stones (unless this bug was fixed in Origins which... I guess is props even though theres so many more bugs than before?). Not a lot of people seem to know why, but if you want a complete save file the only way of doing this is destroying all the holograms and robot creating machines, then in the final level after you've destroyed the robot machine, only then can you get the last time stone, otherwise you end up with a bad good ending if you collect all the timestones 1st.

I actually played Sonic CD for the first time on PC. It was released as a SEGA PC title on CD-ROM. I remember trying to play it on a keyboard on my old Compaq Presario that ran Windows 98.
I had Sonic CD, Sonic 3D Blast (a SEGA CD port of the Saturn version I believe), Sonic R, and the Sonic & Knuckles Collection. That last one had all the music as Midi Format and used a version of music in Carnival Night, Ice Cap, and Launch Base that would be redone and featured in Origins.
The Sonic & Knuckles Collection also had a pretty sweet Screensaver where animated versions of Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Eggman would appear to transition one picture to the next.
As for Origins, it's fine, but it really needed a lot more polish, and a much better price point.

I wouldn't worry about it Completionist, there's so many things wrong with Origins, I can't even count them all on both my hands and I end up making bare minimum 3 paragraphs when explaining to people all the miss comings there's just so many. If people want to hear my thoughts, I'll elaborate, but please be respectful.
I'll list 3 right now, the bottlenecking with the delistings, the price gouging, and at the very least maybe these two could be remedied... if they added new characters now I don't want to sound greedy or anything, but these are inferior versions and us older fans do already have multiple copies of these games, this could be remedied bare minimum by adding say Metal Sonic and Amy, or Mighty and Ray which even predate Sonic... 1? 2 and CD? I forget when their arcade game came out, and Knuckles Chaotix with Mighty was obviously after 3&K. I have 5 copies bare minimum of Sonic 1, which is my least favorite of the classic games... why play it again? Why buy it again? If it offers nothing new, because these are all just ports of the 2011 CD, 2012 Sonic 1, and 2013 Sonic 2 remakes that were on Steam and consoles before the delisting, that are currently on mobile platforms still free with ads, or for 2$ each totaling 6 since 3&K isn't there... but at the same time 3&K still isn't doing anything new, heck it's even being sold as 1 game, there's no way to play them separately as 2 games if you wanted that option, not sure why, but maybe some people do, especially since there are some minor changes like the boss fight and music (which I hear is also not returning because of the whole Michael Jackson shenanigans, I don't blame Sega for that despite blaming them for all these other things). Heck even mods did this for the existing games on Steam, there's a mod for CD called episode Metal which not only swaps the pallets, but they even gave Metal Sonic and Amy new moves so they aren't just Sonic and Tails copies.
See what I mean, that's just 1 of my 3 paragraphs with my biggest gripes, BEFORE the game released, there's just so many wrong things to this bundle that damaged these games, it's unfortunate. So don't worry Jirard, it's just us older fans feeling the backlash, I don't want to dampen it for the younger and newer fans either, I don't want to seem nitpicky, greedy, or anything... but these are big problems, especially if you can go back and say the versions that they delisted were the superior versions, or playing them on Mega Collection + or Gems +, whether you buy them for large amounts of money, or emulated the gamecube versions free on a laptop. It's disappointing for sure, especially because there shouldn't have been any way they could screw these up... yet Sega somehow did, same with Colors Ultimate, Forces, even Mania as good as it is, Sega held Taxman and Stealth back by pushing more remix stages than newer stages, which I don't mind remixing some stages, but we only got like 4 new levels? We've seen Green Hill and Chemical Plant how many times? Like if Mania 2 comes out... not likely since Taxman left after Mania, took 1/2 their team because of a disagreement with Sega (I wouldn't doubt this is why, and he had stealth hang back so they didn't screw Origins up)... but if they did I'd still want SOME remix stages because Mania is a celebration. I'd say just 1 from each game in future Mania sequels, so Mania 2 has Marbel zone, Emerald Hill or Mystic Cave from 2, Tidal Tempest from CD, Icecap from 3, and Sandopolis from Knuckles, maaaybe a Knuckles Chaotix stage (so we can also bring in Team Chaotix as playable characters). That's 6 out of 14, since Mania 1 had 14 in total, so 8 brand new levels, or maybe split the difference 6 old 6 new for 12 total... I'm running on too much at this point, my point is I agree with you Jirard and don't worry about it, and if newer fans are enjoying this, great that's perfectly fine... but also you deserved better too.

Yeah Casltevania collection 1 20$ 8 games and an artbook, Megaman collection 1 10 games 30$, Sega's own Mega Collection + back in early 2000s had 15 games for 40$ and all the bonus features, art, animations, cutscenes that Origins is offering, same with Gems collection released around the same time. Like 40$ I would expect from an Adventures 1/2/Heroes/Shadow bundle remake collection like Spyro and Crash got... and... uggh Mario but that was 60$ and... well we all know how awful that whole situation was. These games before being delisted to bottleneck the expensive Origins bundle were priced at 5$ each on Steam, and consoles (minus 3&K on consoles, it was on Steam though), that means you should only be paying 20$, maaaybe 25 since all that bonus content is ALSO behind a 5$... DLC? paywall? Not really because you can unlock them in game, so it's more like a gacha game mechanics pay to win? That's stupid, pointless. That or you could argue 8$ maybe 13, because they're all free on mobile platforms like tablets and phones, with ads or you can pay 2$ each for a total of 8, again 13 coming from that 5$ "extra" content. There was no need for that 40$ price tag. Also that art you mentioned in the museum... not sure if it's all in Mega Collection + and Gems, but a lot of them were in those bundles as I previously mentioned, even early sketches.

Sonic 3 & Knucles RAISED me, and I loved the music so much that I recorded it on cassette and listened to it on my walkman. Ice Cap Zone was my absolute favourite and the tune still gives me goosebumps. Seeing the music changes in Sonic Origins was a dealbreaker, unfortunately. I would've bought it day 1 if they didn't change the music. Heartbreaking.

Honestly it’s important to talk about rushed development, crunching, and high game prices. As gamers and consumers if we don’t like how a company does something, we should voice it. Especially when there are comparisons of better products, and when a company has a repeated history of rushing games and not learning from their past mistakes.

It's worth noting that both the Capcom Fighting Collections and the TMNT collection are, at the end of the day, a collection of rom files as opposed to fully remastered ports like in Origins. Not to mention over half of the games on the capcom side are different variations of Darkstalkers...don't get me wrong, I love Darkstalkers, but making up over half the bundle when there are other games in their backlog they could've included is excessive.

CD Still holds the fact that it is the literal ONLY instance in a mainline Sonic game where a boss fight consists of you racing someone to a finish line. It's not "run next to them and hit them until they die" it's "win the race and you win the fight" and I love that. (yes I know the Tails missions in SA1 do something similar but its frankly a challenge NOT to win those, I barely think of them as races)

The plumber analogy was great. Although, I'd like to point out that more time can't fix every game. For example, Sonic Frontiers seems to me to have some problems with certain design decisions that were made (such as having the gameplay not really integrated into the environment) that couldn't really be fixed with a delay. A lot of these issues seem to come from issues with priority, but that's really just speculation since I don't really know what's going on behind the scenes

... no offense Jirard, but how have you not played CD? lol, You could have gotten it for 5$ on X Box, Steam, Playstation and it plays the same, actually it's better than the Origins version somehow. Origins took the 2011 remake of CD, 2012 remake of 1, and 2013 remake of 2 and butchered them, but then also price gouged it at a much higher price, then they bottle necked the game so the Origins bundle is the only way to play by delisting the games on all the platforms (though sounds like mobile versions which are free, or 2$ without ads, are still available, and they're the exact same versions... so still a rip off paying 40$ for what would equate to 8 on mobile platforms (granted that is only 6 since 3&K isn't on them, but I know you got other ways to play it)). There is so much you missed out on because you missed your chance thanks to the delisting, it's a shame you never got around to playing this sooner.
Heck I swear you did have a video on this game already, at the very least before Mania came out 6 years ago. Sonic CD is one of my favorite not just Sonic games, but games in general of all time, I'd even go so far as to say I like it more than 3&K, but that's just personally, I know 3&K did a lot for the franchise, I think it's a result of me playing that too much when I was a kid, on top of being longer than Sonic 2 and CD which I never got tired of replaying, it just hasn't held up, but again that's just me I won't deny it being an amazing game.
Well anyways again super surprised you haven't covered it Jirard, but glad you finally are, just unfortunate you got on the band wagon too soon, nothing against oyu Jirard, hopefully I don't sound like I'm blaming you or anything, I'm really happy you are covering it... just like you're disappointed with Jeremy and his dick jokes, I'm just disappointed in Sega.

Jirard, it's often overlooked, but using the level select cheats for Sonic 1 and 2 also gets you access to gameplay options not openly presented.
Sonic 1 wins the lottery here, as it gets options for playing as Sonic WITH Tails, as well as changing the aesthetics of the shield and invincibility to look like Sonic 2 versions.
