About The Game: Sonic the Hedgehog Spinball (known as Sonic Spinball in Japan) is a pinball video game developed by the Sega Technical Institute and published by Sega. It was originally released for the Mega Drive/Genesis in North America and Europe in November 1993 and in Japan the following month. It was later ported to the Game Gear and Master System in 1994 and 1995 respectively. The game has been re-released on a total of eleven different consoles since, with many of them being Genesis-related compilations. The game's plot revolves around series antagonist Doctor Robotnik's desire to enslave the population of planet Mobius via a machine powered by pinball-like mechanisms. Unlike most other Sonic games, it is set in the universe of the Saturday morning Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon.

Fun fact: This game was one of the earliest on Genesis to be programmed in C as opposed to 68K assembly. C is so strong since ya can compile the code to replicate assembly instructions of a target system, hence why DOOM can run on basically anything since it has few if any dependencies on a specific system. However odds are the way it does that is less optimal than doing it by hand. Not so obvious nowadays, REALLY noticeable on older systems

If there's one thing I can appreciate about Sonic Spinball, it's how creatively-designed most of the levels are. Not always well-designed, but at least creative.

You've inspired me to give this game another play through. I enjoyed it as a kid, but I too found it infuriatingly difficult and confusing. Maybe older me will have better luck as older you did.
Honestly I think a Sonic Spinball sequel could be received rather well, tho couldn't be marketed at a full 60 dollar price.
Sonic 3 would be MY choice for favorite Sonic game, if only for it being the literal first game I EVER played. Didn't get far because I played it at a babysitters at age 6. Don't think I would have much nostalgia for it since I didn't play it all that much, but it's a definite fixture in why I play games to this day
Well I remember that I had a sonic pinball game for the GBA which also had Sonic Advance 1. It was pretty good... I haven't played it in a while though.

This is actually my favorite sonic game... It has such an odd dark undertone.
I've had this game since I was a kid, and I'm to the point where I can get through the first three levels with zero problem. No deaths, decent percentage on the minigames too.
The final level STILL kicks my ass on a regular basis.
I was so glad I rented this as a kid.. if I’d had this been one of the precious few new games I could squeeze out of my allowance back then... it would have been a sad day.

I know that many dislike the game, but let's be honest. It is a cool idea for a videogame. Instead of controlling 1 character, you can control 3 of them and use them all to reach certain paths. The only thing that people can agree with me on it though are the bad controls. If they were to update them in a remake or re-release. People would appreciate the game more than most people do now. :P

Bro, the beard mode engage part of your intro is so sick.
I actually liked the game a lot! I was just pissed that when I was on the last level with only a handful of lives, the final boss tossed me out after hitting him a little. That final level was always my death. It was borderline unfair to toss me back into the hardest level and work my way up through a slow and grueling trial and error type of way.

I loved this game as a kid, to be honest. And because of that, no matter how bad it is, I have gigantic nostalgia for it. I remember the good ol' days when all I did was play Doom, Mortal Kombat, and the Sonic games, all while watching Ren and Stimpy. WOOOOOO

I am a huge fan of the Yamaha soundchip in the Sega Genesis, and I felt that, while a little derivative at times in the sound scape in Spinball, it still has some hella rockin tunes, especially Showdown. Which is a nightmare of a level to this day.

I'd never seen the final boss. I loved this game as a kid and actually rationalized why everything was where it was and the game strangely made sense to me. But that lava space stage got the better of me every time. Thanks for helping little me finally see Robotnic Defeated.

I remember renting this as a kid and I loved it. I rented so much and finally got it one year for Christmas. Sure, it wasn't an easy game but I beat it. I still have that same copy and I still love it today. I think it gets a lot of undeserved crap. A lot of times from morons who haven't played it. I'm not saying it's on par with the core Sonic games, but it certainly not as bad as everyone makes it out to be. It's just another game that's becoming cool to hate. However, you have legitimate points and you actually played it to completion. And though I didn't agree with every criticism, it was a great video.

Pinball games are a great example of artificial difficulty. It literally comes down to hit the ball and hope it goes where you want it to go. I still love/hate Pokemon Pinball.

The reason there were more than 7 Chaos Emeralds was that Spinball was based on the SatAM and Archie Comics Sonic the Hedgehog. You even see at least one of those characters in the bonus stages, namely Bunnie Rabbot. Until a certain point in the story, there were countless Emeralds until they were combined into seven.
Oh god I remember this game. My dad had an old sega console and I just remember it being this obscure thing, everyone else had their xboxs and play stations and I was there with my "sega" console. I didn't even know what sega was! I thought Sega was the name of the console! I remember looking through all my dads games on it, and there was one that I enjoyed, and I LOVED it. And it was this. Thanks, Sonic Spinball, you were the first video game I ever played and enjoyed.

If played right, Sonic Spinball will take 45 minutes. Sonic Boom on average lasts 6 hours.

One of my favorite Genesis games, really it's because of that soundtrack and nostalgia. I played it on the PC as a kid and still go back every so often to play it again.
But I also only get to level 3 before getting bored...
I got Sonic spinball between sonic 2 and 3 for christmas, i was happy with it.

Denis Ferro I've been playing it since last year, its quite enjoyable but the pinball physics are pretty wonky and floaty not so bad for normal mode mind you but it can cause aggravation in expert mode
