I feel something that goes a bit unsaid here is how many of this game's levels only work because it's 1 player. Going forward the series would be largely marketed as a multiplayer game and that required a completely different take on level design, leading to areas being much more spacious among other things. Changing the player count inherently changes the game and that sort of lead to this game being even more unique compared to it's derivatives.

    • @AC32896
      @AC32896 Год назад +35

NSMB is easily my favourite in the "New" series. It's the most experimental and takes the most risks, and the level design feels compact and everything feels like it has a purpose. By comparison the console entries especially often felt sparse and empty. I actually prefer NSMB2 over Wii and U for similar reasons, however it's no where near the pedigree of the first game. In fact, NSMB feels more like SMB5 than part of the New series, and for that I love it. It's also a huge bonus that NSMB has unique bosses, along with challenges like beating said bosses with the mini-mushroom. Why the sequels never tried something unique like this instead of Koopaling/Bowser Jr fights is beyond me.
    My personal series rating:
    NSMB
    NSMB2
    NSMBWii
    NSMBU

So one day when we went over to their house, I got to try this out and immediately fell in love with it. I even got into watching Mario flash animations and everything after that. I still wouldn't get my hands on a personal copy for another 2-3 years, but when I finally did, I played the hell out of it. Excellent presentation, great soundtrack, smooth controls, it's aged really well in my opinion. New Super Mario Bros DS was my first new 2d mario game. Having first played Super Mario Advance: Super Mario Bros 3, i was ecstatic when this came out and man 8 year old me was blown away. That trilogy of New DS, Galaxy, and New Wii got me through some rough times in our household and i will forever fondly remember those as such.

I have always loved the aesthetic of this game!
The backgrounds are so colourful and interesting. The big, spotted dome hills in world 1 or the conical mountains in world 6 just do something for me, and the vivid green of the vegetation always made me think that the mushroom kingdom was really jungle like. I also feel like this game is the only instance of feeling real high up in the athletic levels due to how large some of them were.
    This game is my childhood.

My favorite Mario to complete, the super Mario style reserve item keeps things breezy, the secrets let you skip ahead / double down depending on what you're feeling, and the smaller levels + coin holes (on the bottom screen) help make 100% completion very doable.

Despite not having played the game in well over a decade, probably even longer, I still actually remember a good portion of the game and the Luigi code (albeit not even close to complicated) has remained embedded in my brain since the day I learned it.

This was my first ever mario game; I got it with a ds when I was like 6. It’s so nostalgic for me!
One thing I really like is how the bosses are unique in a way, and aren’t just Koopalings or Boom-Booms. The World 6 mole guy was my favorite lol
This and 64 DS were my childhood, and I’m really glad that people like this game as much as I do

This was probably the first DS game I played, and the first video game that I bought with my own money. Got a lot of good memories trying to find all the secret exits in World 7. I still think that it's the best of all the NSMB games, although Luigi U does come very close in my personal opinion. Solid video and review!

New SMB was paramount in 2006 to reintroducing 2D games and especially 2D Mario games to a younger generation. It's hard to comprehend for us older gamers who lived through mountains of 2D platformers in the 80s and early 90s, but most of these kids from the mid 1990s onwards had only really played 3D games. It also really kickstarted the renaissance of 2D games, atleast in the indie sphere, which had been very dead since developers believed they would never get funding for a 2D game anymore. We might be living in a very 2D less world today without this game being as successful as it was, especially with generation Z.

I know you were talking about how the game gets hated on, but generally I only hear good stuff about New Super Mario Bros (DS). In fact I think each New SMB game is good on its own, but people wanted to see what came “next”, and 5 games later we got Mario Maker.

I remember the first time I played this game. It was June of 2006, and two of my older brothers took me to go see Cars in theaters. About an hour and a half before showtime, we stopped by GameStop to buy this game and DS Lite. We decided to sit in the theater auditorium early (it was a hot summer and we wanted air conditioning), taking turns playing the game.

  • @browngaymethodistjesuschri1361

This game literally did its job in introducing kids at the time to Mario. I feel lucky that at around 4 years old there was that trilogy of Mario games on DS (NSMB SM64DS and Mario Kart DS) that nicely showed people who are new to the world what Mario is and what to expect from it

I never see anyone talk about this game. Seeing it here brought me so much joy and nostalgia! It was one of my first games on my first ever console, my Black Nintendo DS Lite (that I sadly broke in half but I kept it so I’d never forget that beautiful thing!)
I do see negative views on the New Super Mario series but, I guess cuz I literally grew up with it and had a blast in all of them, I don’t really have problems with them.
This game was the first game I ever beat, and the first game I beat multiple times! I remember casually going through it and beating Bowser Jr in World 1 for the 20th time and the rest of the game and I knew it like the back of my hand.
Beating Bowser Jr was a big deal for me cuz I needed help beating him the first time cuz I didn’t know how to video game.
Thanks Jirard and team for making this video and hopefully bringing some positive light to the New Soup games
(the Soup was on purpose, RelaxAlax reference)

God, I forget about this game all the time, but it was such a blast as a kid. I beat it so many of times and still put two or three times as much time into the multiplayer with my brother and my step-sister. More than any other game, this really defines a huge period of my childhood. I still wouldn't put it in my top five games, or even my favorite mario game- that goes to galaxy- but it still was amazing.
