2:56 Are we forgetting Super Mario World also got ported to the GameBoy Advance? That's the version I grew up with and I can agree it's the best 2D Mario game.
It was a time where the limitations of the hardware still required developers to be clever and original to stand out, but had just enough power to drive some truly unique and breathtaking experiences that nothing else replicates to this day - aside from, debatably, the remakes of those games. The NES was a bit too limited for these kinds of experiences to really shine, and the N64/PS1 are when everything embraced the third dimension and started the whole process over again. SNES was a golden age of 2D gaming.
I feel like Mario World had the best art style of any 2d Mario game, and really good when looking at 3d ones as well. It made Mario a very colorful character with more vibrant red and blue than any previous designs, and the world and enemies also looked very bright and colorful. It also had so much features and mechanics that were very fun and gave you a whole lot to do. Mario world feels like the perfect representation of the character when it comes to the 2d games

The koopas and other enemies change their appearance for Halloween, hence the Mario masks being one of the most terrifying sights for the koopas
Whenever the question of best 2d mario comes up it is inevitably a choice between this and 3. I'm perpetually on the fence, but I cannot argue with Jirard's points on SMW at all. A rare example I think of a true 10/10 game.
SMB3 is still great and has its own unique charm for sure, but it always feels like “proto-Mario World” every time I play it, even with the All-Stars version. Mario World is just the bigger, badder, better version of the groundwork laid by Mario 3.

First game I became addicted to as a kid and spawned my gamer craze. It was the first game I showed my stepson and the first game we beat together. Super Mario World is a breath of life.
I don't like choosing favorite games/shows/music/etc, but Super Mario World is so formative and nostalgic for me that it has to be my favorite game of all time. I will always love this game for the fun it gave/gives me and the world of gaming that it brought me into
Hey Jirard (hope I spelled that right) Could you please complete the Transformers Cybertron games Transformers: War for Cybertron and its sequel Transformers: Fall of Cybertron They're a joy to play and I enjoyed completing it, so I think you would too.
I never comment on videos here on RUclips, but I agree so much with everything you said in this. Thank you for doing a video of the game that made me fall in love with videogames.
I've completed SMW a couple of times myself, and most recently doing it on the SNES Classic Mini reminded me how the two most annoying parts of completing the game will always be the Forest of Illusion (specifically the only space in the game with THREE exits, its Ghost House, and how being at 95/96 kept stumping me even though the map "looked completed") and Choco Island with the stage whose screens are determined by time and coin count and an exit that loops back to itself.
I’ve seen the commercials for this game and it’s nostalgia overload. Even though I never had the game, I’ve seen others play it. Great stuff! I hope your surgery as well as your recovery goes well, Jirard. Also I’m so happy Normal Boots is back, I loved the Madness series. I’ve watched the live stream on Twitch. So much nostalgia! *crying happy tears*. ❤️♥️💜
0:17 Actually no. I got super nervous playing it due to the time limit and lack of health bar; it’s generaly the reason I stay away from platformers now.
Super Mario World is my childhood!! Everything about it just brings me back to the very first time I experienced it. I didn't have an SNES so I would play the game at my friends houses, but it wasn't until N64 was out that I actually bought myself an SNES. Like, my dad and brother were like "don't you want the newest system?" and trying to convince me that i should get the 64, but I was dead set on wanting an SNES because I wanted to play Super Mario World so bad for myself. To this day it is the only game I've ever completed, when I was a kid I had the help of my friends completing it, but it wasn't until a few years ago that I dusted off my old cart and played through it and finally got passed the Tubular level which I always had trouble on. UGHH I love this game so much.
This is the first video game I ever played, I got it on Christmas Day 1994. Every year since then (with two exceptions when I was in basic training and on a deployment, respectively) I have played SMW on Christmas. Sometimes I go through the entire game and do as much as I can, sometimes it's a speedrun, sometimes I just play for like 5 minutes before going back to spend time with my family, but the first few levels of SMW are more of a Christmas tradition in my house than turkey dinner :)
Playing that kind of game when you are 6-7-8 years old really impact your view of the video game world after that. I remember it was also one of the first adrenaline/super rewarding moment when I was playing that game and discovering something totally unexpected (Special world) or just a secret exit that was super hard to find.
So personally timely! I have been in a game slump (trying to get into something old or new). Just 3 days ago I started my 30th or so play through of this game on my Switch. Great to spend an hour in bed after work and destress. I remember getting an SNES on Christmas of release year with a good friend of mine also getting the system. We were, of course, kids but calling each other with the phones on speaker (from the phone receiver base, yes they had those then) and basically talking crap to each other as we played through Super Mario World was and is a memory I cherish.
Miyamoto said that it's his favorite Mario game. I have to agree with the master on this one. I love them all, but I will always love this one the most.
While I cannot admit to growing up on the SNES, but bloody hell does Super Mario World have its influence just almost everywhere. A classic in all the definition
Come back to this game every year or two... still have my snes ready to go, and recently beat it on the switch with a buddy... whether it's my sister, a cousin, or good friend, all of my memories with this game could power a care bear
This was the very first video game I ever played, and how fitting that it's stuck with me so consistently over the years. Every time my sister comes over we make it a point to play through the game from start to finish just kind of as a long standing tradition since we bonded over this game so much as kids.
Kinda surprised he didn't do the GBA version of the game. That one had one more completion criteria, in that if you find all the Dragon Coins in all the levels over the course of the game, you get a cute little cutscene for it.
Regarding the reward for beating the Special Worlds and the Koopa turning into weird Mario things: the color change is actually changing Dinosaur Land to autumn, and it's Halloween, which is why some of the Piranha Plants are Jack-O-Lanterns. 3d world is leaving the chat
@@That.One.Kid_ As it should…
First game I became addicted to as a kid and spawned my gamer craze. It was the first game I showed my stepson and the first game we beat together. Super Mario World is a breath of life.
Regardless of the situation. I still enjoy your videos man. Hang in there. This shall pass
I don't like choosing favorite games/shows/music/etc, but Super Mario World is so formative and nostalgic for me that it has to be my favorite game of all time. I will always love this game for the fun it gave/gives me and the world of gaming that it brought me into
Hey Jirard (hope I spelled that right)
Could you please complete the Transformers Cybertron games
Transformers: War for Cybertron
and its sequel
Transformers: Fall of Cybertron
They're a joy to play and I enjoyed completing it, so I think you would too.
I never comment on videos here on RUclips, but I agree so much with everything you said in this. Thank you for doing a video of the game that made me fall in love with videogames.
Last time I was ear- oh wait, I've never been this early before...
Nice
I've completed SMW a couple of times myself, and most recently doing it on the SNES Classic Mini reminded me how the two most annoying parts of completing the game will always be the Forest of Illusion (specifically the only space in the game with THREE exits, its Ghost House, and how being at 95/96 kept stumping me even though the map "looked completed") and Choco Island with the stage whose screens are determined by time and coin count and an exit that loops back to itself.
i click so fast in a instant!!!!
Cant wait for the Super Mario Wonder video
Such a great game. And the first Kaizo series on Beard Bros is how I discovered you.
Still play it 30 years later.
Miyamoto said that it's his favorite Mario game. I have to agree with the master on this one. I love them all, but I will always love this one the most.
Jirard hope you are recovering well sir. Always great to see your videos, appreciate all that you do bro. Stay awesome! :)
Will take a look at Normal Boots, did not know about that project.
Makes me sad
Those opening notes of the Super Mario World opening scene will never be forgotten
